Things I'd Rather Not Have Experienced in the USA as a French Woman... 🇫🇷🇺🇸 

There is a saying in the US. “Be kind to others because you never know what someone is going through” The older I have gotten the more I understand this saying. ❤

As an American who loves his country, it does not offend me to see a French woman talk about our problems. It is respectful.

I have traveled a lot, but after I was 35. One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't see the world when I was young, before I was married and a mom. You are doing it right!

As an American, it just really warms my heart and soul to hear that many people have been so kind to you! I was raised with the mindset that if you see someone who needs help you should help them, to put others before yourself, and to smile because you don't know who needs one and who might be having a bad day. I don't know if it's right or wrong, it just feels like the right thing to do. I always worry about rude Americans giving us a bad name, but I'm so glad you had a great experience in that regard. 🙂

What I like about us, as Americans is that although we sometimes mistreat each other, we always welcome guest to our country with open arms. We even welcome guest to our state with open arms. I am always blown away at how genuinely nice and sweet the people of other states are when I visit. I'm from the west coast, (CA, Ore, WA) but I have family in the south and the people there are the warmest that we have. Shout out to So Carolina, and Tennessee. ♥ You guys are the best. ♥

I remember years ago, a neighbor knew of a friend of a friend who was down and out and homeless. Those who knew the person were sad because he was smart and a nice person growing up. The neighbor, who was quite well off, befriended the homeless man got him into an apartment and paid his rent forward a few months and also got him job with someone he knew. He could do the job well and the employer liked him. However, the guy stopped showing up for work after a few months and then abandoned the apartment and went back out on the street. The neighbor tracked him down and the guy said that the working life and bills was 'not for him'. He thanked him for trying to 'help' him, but he was OK and happy where he was. It's just one person, but every homeless person has a story behind them.

I watch your US travel videos and always appreciate the reverence you have for our Country. Thank you for always being honest but fair with your evaluations.

I have lived on both coast of the USA. San Diegians are very welcoming. Homeless from all over the US and various countries like to come to San Diego as the weather is nice year round and San Diegians are kind to the homeless often handing out blankets, hats and food. True the situation is getting out of control. There are no longer enough shelters available now. Hope this helps you to understand San Diego s homeless situation.

We cannot wrap our arms around everyone that is homeless. Some have terrible drug addiction, mental illness. When my young son experienced it in Paris he cried so hard for one lady in particular. He has a kind heart. But you can help a little but you can't save everyone. He's 24 now and understands what I said 16 years ago. Life is hard and it's a battle everyday. You're very kind. People will attempt to argue that homelessness is this reason or that. It's many things. It's very complicated. It's not one single issue. And in many cases it's part of a 30+ years of neglect, harmful policies. A huge issue is in many parts of the country they have not built enough houseing for the rate of growth for 20 to 30 years so there's a housing shortage. Many places people are homeless cause they can't afford the housing due to high prices and lack of supply. I was nearly homeless while working. People will blame mental health and that is an issue for some. But one thing is as a country we stopped funding mental health public hospitals, we stopped funding homeless shelters in the 80s. So now they are on the street. From the 40s through the 70s there was a social safety net for the unemployed that kept them with enough to be housed and transition to the next job. Those were drastically minimized especially in the Reagan era of the 80s. There's no welfare except in super rare exceptions now. So truth is we don't protect people like our society used to. You ask where the money goes to, it goes to the special interests that fund a given political campaign. Individual people are rich. The government is rich. Most people are not remotely rich. You ask about future. We ask EVERYDAY. And i'm pretty sure. We won't be well. Sad to say. Especially when you see attacks on freedoms, the rise of hate speech and hate groups in the states, and a movement towards embracing authoritarianism. I'm not optimistic honestly.

I’m in the US. Years ago I met a young French woman on a bus. She was traveling the US alone. I invited her to stay with my family. She ended up living with us for a month. Lost contact with her but we tried to make her stay enjoyable. We had also taken in some young men from Germany. I guess we were meant to be tour guides. Enjoy your trip to Canada. Americans feels that Canadians are notoriously nice compared to themselves.

Hey Marie! The fear of losing freedom and related basic human rights should be on the minds of everyone... Freedom is never cheap and not easy to obtain. It should never be selfish, never used to strip away or lessen another's freedom. Never used to control others. It is complex because it must be outward facing. And it should be adored and revered by all. It needs to be protected from those who feel their beliefs are more important than someone else's, for those are the people that try to take it away from others. As is sometimes true elsewhere in the world, some in the US are blind to the importance of others' freedoms. Those with power believe it to be a possession, or some use it to gain power or control. And some focus so intently on their own precious freedom, that they don't see themselves stepping on the freedoms of their neighbors. Some end up taking freedom for granted and wield it like a weapon to dictate how others should live. Yet, the mass majority know we fight together with other free nations, to protect and offer freedom for all those who seek it - those beyond ourselves. For without the balance created by freedom FOR all - there truly is no freedom AT all. Even in these crazy times - don't worry, freedom will prevail. Thank you for sharing your fear with everyone. Snobs in this country sometimes adopt french culture in order to look down on others. You helped me see beyond stereotypes and put a human face on France. When I was young, in school they taught us the Golden Rule: "treat others as you would like to be treated". My mother also instilled that to me, and I've always gone through life with the Golden Rule in mind!

Traveling when you're young enough to fully enjoy it is something i envy you for. I wanted to, but couldn't afford to until I got older. I only had about 10 years of traveling before my health made travel too difficult. So take every opportunity while you can.

Marie, I've stood on five continents and been to 38 different nations. You're completely right when you say that when you go to new places it opens your eyes to perspectives you'd otherwise not have. I have concluded, in my time adventuring, that there are good and bad people everywhere. There's no place I've found that's completely good, and no place that's entirely bad. The same can be said of the people. There are great people out there and there are some really awful ones too. We all have that inner voice that tells us when something's not right and most of us don't pay any attention to it. I think it's wise to listen to it. Some people don't and their lives are destroyed as a result. You made valid points and it's always good to say what you think because that's how the exchange of ideas happens. Keep up the great work, and keep smiling!

Marie, it is touching to hear your views and opinions on the United States. You have a very unique view on the American experience. Most of us, americans, do not see the issues of this country the same way you would/will. Believe me, we are not perfect and you're calling us out on it. Good! We deserve that. I understand what you are saying about homeless folks. I worked with an organization that helped the homeless community. I found that many (a very large portion) of homeless people make a decision that even though they have many sources of help they for some reason don't take advantage of it. There are shelters, work programs, food assistance Free health clinics and more. I agree that it's a problem, but you can't force a person to accept help. Another sad factor is that mental illness is also part of the homeless community and that adds a problem when it comes to get cooperation with that person. Hopefully we all will find a solution that is a world problem. You're doing a great job.

Yeah, a random act of kindness can bring changes. I am a bit surprised that you were showed so much kindness and I am very happy to hear it.

Like you said it is a big place with lots of different people. So sorry you had a negative experience in Arizona. The USA is not a perfect place including some people. As far as being trusting others too much that is just your nature and a big part of who you are as a person. You keep your mind open and want to explore the world. It is a good quality to have even if some people try to take advantage of you. I would say it is 1 reason your channel is popular. As far as the future nobody knows for sure so do your best to keep your chin up. Keep on traveling and posting your videos as you make the world a better place!!!

The fact that so many of us can't or don't see it is terrible. Instead of worrying what might happen, focus on the wisdom your travels have given you. Bonjour Marie.....this is an excellent video, very fair and reasoned. There are many good things about America, but we do have issues. I'm very impressed at what a thoughtful, sensitive person you are. First of all, the drum roll between topics was very funny. On a more somber note, the issue of homelessness is very sad. There are programs and efforts made to help homeless people, but sometimes there are things at play that make it difficult to help them, such as mental illness and addiction issues. You have a good heart to worry about the homeless. I think there is nothing wrong with your reason for wanting to travel so much. Fear can be a great motivator. Not wanting to miss out on opportunities in life can keep you engaged and moving forward. Your "joie de vivre" is very evident. Keep that spirit with you always.

Yes, things seem bigger here than in smaller countries, and that goes for the good things as well as the problems we have. The homeless problems here are sad, and unfortunately that problem is treated differently, and sometimes more visibly in certain areas than in others. I love that you try to look on the positive side of things as much as possible, and that you are a trusting person 😊. (I have become more wary (or untrusting) as I have gotten older, the more I see.) I completely understand your being afraid of the future for you, and you are definitely not alone!!! It is easy to see that can lead to your wanting to travel even more to be sure you see as much as possible, in case our freedoms become infringed upon 😥😲. And I see that happening here right now - I am also concerned with the frightening loss of certain freedoms in our country! Life is never certain. I have had multiple cancers and gone to the edge a few times. Before cancers I did survival camping to test myself. I worked as a bouncer in the past. These different experiences have taught me to live life as you can and as fully as you can. Things will happen. Some plans may not happen. Never let stop you. Live life.

My gosh Marie, _so many_ things to comment on about your really open dialogue in this one. But this is important I think -- it's fine to be trusting and everything, because 99% of the population is worth trusting in an OPEN public place, but we still need to keep our eyes open and observe our surroundings with caution. Just noticing anything a little bit off with someone as you travel (it's always in the eyes!) will help a lot with feeling safe. Love this video a lot.

I feel the same way, perhaps not to the extent, but it's there. I had always dreamed of travel but it hadn't been something I could afford. Marie, you need a hug! I’d like to tell you that your fears are common to young people who just need the sureness that maturity brings and that there is nothing to worry about, but you live in a vulnerable area where a war is happening. Even as an old guy, I have never experienced that. As for the price of gas here (USA), the structure of French/European society and USA society are different and how they pay for social services. Won’t get into which is batter, but they are very different. The homelessness you saw on the West Coast has several causes. People do get priced out of affording rent. The fentanyl crises and other addictions cause it. Believe it or not, many CHOOSE to live on the streets, even when there are options to not do so. (Or combinations of all three). It’s more apparent on the West Coast due to the weather and available social programs, IE, some travel there for these things. Please come out to here the sky’s are open in the middle of the country during the next “pandemic.” We did what we wanted and the government couldn’t really stop us from enjoying the outdoors, like those in the cities. We enjoy you, Marie!

In general, you have the right perspective on how to live every day and experience as much as possible while you can. Time has a way of passing by too fast. Don't overthink everything though. Life has a way of working itself out somehow.

I'll never understand the focus so many foreigners have on the restroom doors. I've never thought about it and I really don't believe other Americans do.

If you make another trip to the USA make the southeast states a destination. you have experienced the Northeast (Where I am originally from) and the West coast. You're educating yourself about the world. By the way, when you go to Canada, you should try to see the CN Tower in Toronto, one of the tallest structures in the world. The view from their observation area is spectacular.

Try not to worry about the things you cannot change. I have a son your age Marie and he gets scared for the future and I understand that totally but I tell him to only worry about himself and what he can do and not to over worry about the rest. That's all we can do. My mother never lost a night's sleep and I asked her once how she does it, because I would lose sleep worrying about things. She told me she asks herself if at this moment she can do anything about it and if not put it away until tomorrow. I have to tell you that this works. I ask myself can I fix this right now at this moment and if I can't I roll over and go to sleep. Hope this helps you too.❤

Hey Marie , how's it going 😃 ✨ There's much to ponder over 🥁 roll!!! America continues to be an amazing country with so much wealth & potential , freedom is a chance to be better if you strive & believe in yourself dreams really can come true. You do pick up on things with fresh eyes coming from europe on how it differs for better or worse. You do tend to think of big cities as being less friendly & rude with people driven more by there own needs but you do have to keep a open mind & remain positive , sometimes you'll pleasantly surprised giving a smile & in return. That's why people prefer town & country where it can feel safer , the few drawbacks are that everyone can get to know your business & be a bit small minded. Did you find it that more friendly & easy going in the south , they say it feels like a different country where good manners & traditions matter more , where waitress's call you honey , elevator rides filled with small talk , if someone's options differ it's met with' bless your heart ' rather than intolerance , there's more of a culture of honour down south where one's reputation is highly valued , if your insulted & fail to respond in slightly you could be taken advantage of but in defending your honour people think twice before behaving badly around you again , you expect a certain amount of respect from strangers there. As for the gas prices ⛽ how do people put up with it over there , Washington state the worst at $4 . 98 a gallon with California a close second , it also affects farmers with food prices going up. Maybe a hybrid would save you on fuel if you can buy one for under 35, 000 , at least you don't have to plug them in so you won't get cut off in a emergency & they do have regenerative braking, there's a new Mustang powertrain out in 2024. I do like the idea of having a electric motor bike to roam around town , not sure about touring you'll probably need a spare battery for that , a lot of biker's do like to hear there engines roar. What you were saying about homelessness , it must have seemed shocking you probably didn't experience the worst of it thankfully , it's become such a big issue in California with tent city's in parks & dirty needles everywhere , there's no easy fix when it comes to mental illness & addiction as well as those without any fault of their own , it could happen to anyone of us if where not careful & responsible, I guess that why you save for a rainy day. I wish more people would stop making excuses for voting in bad policys , it is a nation wide problem but I'll take the sunshine state of Florida nowdays over California when it comes to the quality of life & your freedom. Anyway on a finishing note try to let go of your worries & fears marie you don't need to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders , life's always been risky & dangerous , imagine what it was like for our grandparents with rations while fighting a war we've got it easy, whatever the future holds just do your best to plan ahead & make the best of right now like you said, you can have all the adventures your heart desires it might become more challenging while traveling , find the courage within yourself to grow don't let anything stand in the way of your dreams , you'll come to realize your more powerful then you know. your always have me . I am American. I watch you from Wyoming. I think you should try to see yellow stone Park. Glacier park in Montana. Devils tower on Wyoming. Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. How big. Wide open and free it truly is. Just an old cowboys hope for you little one.

Marie, I'm very happy that people treated you well here. In general I feel that Americans are happy because of freedom. We are free to do or think and that translates into a satisfactory life. In the same way, I'm going to give you my own personal observations. I have visited Europe several times I've been more than once in UK, Portugal, Spain, France and Italy. Of all places, in France I felt that the people resent visitors and specifically Americans. Any other country you ask for directions in bad Italian or Portuguese and people help. Not so in France. They resent that you don't speak perfect French and are not willing to help. I have always felt this way, not only in Paris but in rural towns. I visited Lourdes and villages in the area traveling by land from Spain (San Sebastian) and also beautiful western towns where the fast train goes under water to London. I hope you will continue your travels as I enjoy your travel logs.

Well, I think your attitude about the fear is best. The fear factor is beyond any doubt, scary. But you can let the fear motivate you... or let the fear paralyze you. Don't let fear keep you from pushing forward with your chosen path.

My daughter in law is from Guer, France and I think it has taken her a long while to adjust to the USA. Yes, it is a different style and vibe here.

I would love to see you connect up with some Cajuns in the Bayou of Louisiana, and experience a community meal with Cajun Music with them. In the 1980s there were like 1.25 Million people in Louisiana that did not speak English. Its a whole other World. I would also love you hang with some Bowstonians and experience Boston! California has a high homeless population because people can survive most of the year outdoors, a lot of their homeless is transient from other states. Plus the government is more open to the homeless.

How could six people at the time of typing this, dislike a video about a person speaking on their personal experience in another country? Such a marvelous soul, simply speaking about their experiences to the U.S. And six people go, "Nope, dislike". Amazing. I would add six likes to this video to make up for it if I could. But to the main reason I was commenting, glad to see you enjoyed your trip and got to experience life in another country. So few get to and it's a shame. Like all countries, America is beautiful, but has it's faults. Homelessness is a major issue that is constantly overlooked unless it's for a political push. Sadly, a lot of the homeless are veterans or people who are addicted to various drugs. Hopefully we can manage to tackle that in the near future, more nearer than far.

Hello, I just discovered your channel a couple of hours ago. You said something that really touched me. You said with everything going on between Covid and Warren Ukraine and maybe even our freedoms get taken away you want to travel as much as possible I feel exactly the same, and I have begun to travel as well. My dream is to spend the rest of my life each summer, exploring Europe, especially Italy France in Germany. We are blessed to be able to travel so freely today and I am glad I found you.

While I have been watching you discover my beloved USA, one thing I hoped you would learn, by your own experience, that as good as we think we are, we aren't perfect. There is no utopia, especially here. I am pleased and proud that you had many very good experiences, because there are many good things to experience, but I am also glad you saw some of the underbelly, the ugly things. Marie, you are a great ambassador for your country, and I am glad that my fellow citizens gave you many fond memories of our country. Great video.

Thanks for your compliments and honesty. I think you finally realized that the USA is not a "Country" but a melting pot of peoples from all over the world that have mostly found a common ground for the last 200 years. In my living in other countrys I relate to your experiences. European and Asian Countries are homogenous cultures that can be intolerant of foreigners. I have experienced racism and anti-American atitudes in places that at first welcomed me to their homes (Japan, Korea, Germany, Ireland UK, etc.) but after a few days wished that I would go home. I tried to learn the local language but have discovered that they do not like Americans "butchering" their perfect dialects. I love your videos and hope you return someday. Like most nations the USA is experiencing political unrest. In closing: "Do not be Sad that it ended, but be Glad that it Happened".

I'm grateful for having the opportunity to have lived in Belgium for 3 yrs. I can speak maybe B1- B2 level French (I would put this lady about C1, almost C-2 level English) which was helpful in Belgium and France. I spent very little time in Paris, mainly because I don't like big cities. But I went to a lot of places in eastern France, close to the Belgian border. I did go to Normandie and Bretagne and had great experiences with everybody in all my travels. Except once... I was in a restaurant, speaking English with my wife, and the people at the next table thought I didn't understand French, and they thought I was from England... (maybe they couldn't tell the difference in accents) and they were saying things about why don't English people stop coming to France because of brexit... and I laughed and whispered to them.... "pas anglais madame. On est Américains." They were embarrassed to be sure.

I travelled to many countries when I was young. It was the best experience of my life because it expanded my view of the world. I understand your fears and worries. I can tell you as a 50 year old that things are not as bad as they seem. Politicians and the media always make it seem worse than it is. Worry is just a waste of time and energy.

California has spent billions of dollars on homelessness and it has been an utter failure. Thousands of people sleeping on sidewalks with or without a tent is crazy. Children walking to school shouldn’t have to pass some people abusing drugs, and society simply shouldn’t tolerate people relieving themselves in the street as dogs do. I have no problem at all with my tax dollars supporting homeless shelters, but I think the homeless should be required to use them, and they should be kept safe by police in them if necessary. Il y aura toujours des problèmes dans ce monde Marie, mais n’aies pas peur. Si tu es prudente et observatrice quand tu voyages à l’étranger, je crois que tu resteras sain et sauf. Hier, c’était le Musée du Louvre et les Champs-Elysées. Aujourd’hui, Versailles. Demain, Montmartre et la Basilique du Sacre Cœur. Lundi, CDG et le retour à New Jersey, USA. Bon courage Marie. I've been to France several times and really like it a lot. Paris is definitely a must see because I am a history nut but the parts of France I really love are places like Aux en Provence, Marseilles blew my mind, the Alps region, etc. Much like in the United States it's the non-urban places where you meet the real people while people in major cities have some ridiculous attitude that your very existence is an annoyance and a hardship on their lives. I grew up in the Idaho Rocky Mountain region and it was an amazing place and way to grow up. I go to LA, SF, NY for example and I can't figure out why people are so rude and generally unhappy about everything.

A number of the states in the middle of the country that I'm acquainted with have new airports because of that, they have made substantial changes in the doors and the restrooms that I think you would appreciate. I know, for example, the doors to the restroom stalls in the Salt Lake City International Airport will be more to your liking . As are those to the new Kansas City International airport.

Thank you for actually seeing the real America and people...everyone just normally go to the big city where people can be rude or fake. But you actually went to the midwest and other places that dont get much love from foreigners. So if they do come here they normally only have bad things to say but let's be honest the ones that bash us probably never even been here. You're one of my favorite youtubers cause you're honest and humble thanks again.

I visited the south of France, and the people there treated me with the same kindness we have in the U.S.
