Look I'm 30 years old and you have no idea how glad I am I found a RU-vid channel where someone isn't screaming in my face like I'm 17 and offering only "reacts" as content. Keep up the good work and articulate explanations.
Something I never realized as a first time subi owner, but i do now. Anything over 400whp is almost un usable on the street. The internet wants us too think 400whp is slow.
After driving a few outrageous cars, one of them being a 2018 g wagon awd with 566 hp and tq and it was an experience for sure. But it’s useless. I think that 300 hp and tq in a car like this is absolutely more than enough. If you plan on tracking the car then obviously then it makes sense, but for daily driving even my 2020 stock wrx is more than enough.
Good point, I live in Norway 🇳🇴 and own a blobeye STI.. its properly tuned, forged internals, spec-c twinscroll turbo, reversed inlet for even lower turbo lag cuz of less piping.. power? 380 hp. Its built like that to last as long as possible, but that horsepower is more than enough on the street.. I could lose my license in a few snaps of fingertips, and going full throttle.. it doesn't take long before you are already at dangerously high speeds, so yeah.. subies are lightweight and dont really need like 500-600 hp to be fun. You want usable power, not so much power that you cant use.
Ended up with a 21’ STI w/ 15k miles on it. Bone stock except the Cobb 3” titanium catback. Owned it one month now, and already spent a months salary on parts. Damn this thing is addicting! Heading for the tuner and dyno this Friday!
03:19 as someone who works with carbon fiber daily, which requires a respirator while modifying it, I completely agree with this. Carbon fiber is super overrated when it’s not used in a functional way.
2011 WRX here. You just pretty much helped me make a decision I’ve been fighting. I have Nameless turboback with their catted downpipe. Love the sound. But I started to wonder if catless was the way. With driving it so much, I’ll stay catted for a while. Starting all my fueling mods and a few other support mods now.
It’s funny how tons of people think that EVOs can run 1000 hp. Well technically they can for like 5000 miles. A Evo motor can run reliable at 450 hp where in STI can at 400 not that big a difference.
Other than certain parts of the longblock these Subaru STI's are super tough. I've seen 1000whp cars run multiple seasons on the stock 6 speed. The brakes are bomb, the axles are pretty dang strong, the diffs hold up to a ton of abuse, really is a great platform. Great video and I agree with all your 5 do not things though man, great video.
Disagree. these are incredible cars to build for high hp. High revving can throw all the boost at it. Either more bread or more knowledge for you my friend. Anything can be fast. And maybe you pay more than an evo or a supra. But that's just pride my friend. Rods pistons ported heads if u want. Fueling and a turbski.
@@pauloquintana2511 Ummm...that exactly what I said, these cars are great performance cars and with the right mods can make impressive numbers. Mine was making 551whp and 561whtq before I pulled the FP Green for a rotated 6870. I'll have it back together next week and we'll be shooting for low 700s on the stock motor (not for long, a built long block this summer will help push it over 1000whp).
@@mr.carguy3161 Yes it is cheaper to build a Honda. Making 900whp with an LS is even cheaper and easier. Sometimes it's not about the most cost effective way to make power. The Boxer 4 cylinder is unique and a really cool driving experience. That's like comparing the I4 in my Honda Fireblade to the V4 in my Ducati Streetfighter. Both make over 200hp but they are radically different in how they make that power and how they feel to operate. Again, my Honda is cheaper to modify because it has one header, one head, one set of cams, etc. while my Ducati has two of everything.
I really like my '14 STI hatch, but 100% agree on the fact that it is not the right platform for high HP, specially on stock block. I've done my research prior to starting my build, and come to quickly realize that it takes alot to squeeze power of these flat 4 and a comfortable/reliable number is between 350-380 WHP... of course with a $10k+ budget, a built block would get you that and more.
My 19 sti is stock other then the Cobb 3inch catback I want to but the Cobb sf intake from what I have read it will be fine as long as I run the ots map stage 1+93 on my accessport and I want to also put the same bpv as u is this ok?
Thanks I wanted to tripe check because I see all these videos saying as long as it's a Cobb SF intake and u have the Cobb access port it will be fine so a protune just for a Cobb intake I can't use the OTS map on my accessport?
@@adrianvasquez4164 yea but some people should just not be allowed to modify cars, not even talking about cosmetics rn, 90% of "car guys" do the WORST mods and just do shit wrong and then wonder why their car doesn't perform the way they want it to
I don't have any issues with boost creep. I have an invidia catless downpipe going to an r400 catback. But I also run a Cobb EBCS, sf intake, and an AEM 340lph fuel pump with a pro tune. Without the boost controller, yes, boost creep can become an issue. But if you do it correctly catless is fine.
just seen this .Great what U Say .ive a 2018 People in UK were i'm From Like Them STOCK . U Get your Money back .More Then MOD Have had 3 Scooby's UK 300 WRX an STI Hawkeye and now MY 4th
At the 1min mark, you talk about needing a tune for a CAI. In general I agree but you go on to say there no way around it…that’s not accurate. I have a 2017 STI with a PERRIN CAI. I’ve had the car for the entire life of the vehicle thus far and had the PERRIN CAI on since like week 2. I’ve never tuned it, it’s my daily/farm car. Runs perfect. Fun fact…PERRIN is the only company that made their intakes to Subaru spec’s and as a result you end up with an intake that doesn’t require a tune. I’ve spoken to PERRIN myself to confirm (4 times, 3 different people). Like I said, in general I agree with the “CAI needs a tune!” sentiment but in this case there is no need.
That is very interesting. I don't want to tune my STI for fear of needing the engine warranty, but this could be the ticket. (Unless the intake has the same warranty drawback)
@@nthgth I wouldn’t know as I’ve not had to take it in for anything since I bought it. Nothing engine related anyhow. I know Subaru can be rough when it comes to that sorta thing but they still gotta prove the intake caused whatever issue you might have. As stated though, I’ve literally had zero issues with my engine…runs like a champ and I do indeed drive it like I stole it lol
@@dreambigaerialimaging9125 cool. Does it feel any different? Or just a different sound? I'd think that if it doesn't need a tune, it doesn't significantly alter airflow so it shouldn't drive differently, but maybe the sound itself can be felt
@@nthgth no noticeable difference in my opinion but I’ve talked to guys that swear it feels like it has more pep. I disagree. Now when I swapped my exhaust out, I felt like it made a little difference maybe. Perrin stands behind the “no tune needed” for their CAI. I’ve checked and rechecked just to make sure. As far as I can tell, they are literally the only one. I never wanted to tune it but wanted it to sound nice and this was really the only way to go when researching the topic. Sorry for taking so long to respond, notifications are off for some reason.
I highly disagree with the lighting topic. I run the OLM Halo fog lights/ with the DRL Bezels plus LED turn signal lights, nothing too crazy. But the car looks definitely more modern. I think the stock look, specially on the front end looks outdated compared to similar cars out there. Either way, I respect your opinion, and your videos are great.
No worries! This is just my version of what I prefer on my own car. I get others have opinions and parts they like. That is the fun of modifying our cars!
What’s your opinion on the single exit exhaust on this car? My 2018 sti has the tomei ti titanium single exit with the catted downpipe, I think it looks pretty great and gives a clean sound without being too obnoxious and ricer sounding
Just recently got a 20 STi. Looking into some mods. I’m just wondering who’s the go to tune for these cars and the best for basic mods like intakes and stuff?
Hmm… I agree with having an access port and tubes ready. But.. doesn’t the stock bov leak with even 3lbs of air pressure? I’ve seen so many people take them off new blow into them manually to show a leak I see a lot of pro racers ride with some of the items you complain about I prefer a lot of suspension and chassis upgrades first then stage 2 to 3 “For me personally” I think your advice is for everyday drivers vs race weekend daily drivers
Personally love real carbon , I think doing the entire front end in carbon looks fucking bad ass. Looks like you’re about to just demolish mfs in the streets so I disagree
Just to add something. I have a conversation with a over 12 years experience Subaru mechanic. The Intake change would not affect the engine. The car have a mass flow sensor. The sensor will calculate how much flow of air and the computer ajust the consumption of gas. The only thing tuning car helps is to adjust to get better performance with what you have or add.
This. Ive run the Perrin intake with no tune for 15k miles with 0 issues. If the change of air flow were enough to cause a problem, you would throw a CEL
if you want to run cat-less just be prepared to cough up money for a pro tune. if you have a good tuner you will be fine. but I completely agree with everything else. pretty car
My coworker had 2015 STI. First his trans blew now his engine blew. Barely making 300HP. Too much money for blowbru. He did catless downpipe with tune.
I would love to know what modifications he has on the car when this happened. My guess is he went stage 2 (possibly with an intake and catless) and didn't have any supporting fueling mods to accommodate the increased power. To blow a transmission on an STI is pretty uncommon. I would assume this fella launched the car 10 times a day and/or a very inexperienced manual transmission driver. I could be wrong though. There are instances when cars have had issues completely stock. However, that goes along with any performance car.
Going CATLESS on the S209, but with all the supporting mods like you said: 1300CC, E85 full kit, TGV Delete, FMIC, and Tommy Kentner Protune. Good video, good points on not going OD on visual mods. Tasteful is key.
Love the color, Beautiful ride. I personally agree, less is more, but i do hate the black plastic on my STi so im working on putting carbon fiber in those areas.
I currently have a 2014 gli 6 speed on stage 2 with bolt ons, I’m looking to trade up for a 2015-17 wrx later this year but I want to kinda do the same build with the wrx that I have with my gli now. But based on your video they seem super finicky lol, it would be my daily driver so I need it to be reliable. Cobb has the stage 2 package but would I need anything more than that for reliability concerns? I wouldn’t want to spend more than 4K on mods after purchasing the car and definitely don’t want to blow it up lol
Modding these cars seems like such a troubled. I’ve never own on it I’m looking into them. It’s seem like every mod you do you could break it. Do example the air intake. I had a genesis and obviously my first mod was the air intake and I never had an issue. Is modifying this car really hard? Need help guys
This is a very clean and simple looking STI- well done! I have a 2020 Type R but I I wish I had looked into an STI before committing to buy so I can feel the difference between how both drives. I don’t like the ugly looking 2022 models. Where can one still find a fairly new previous Generation? Just curious to know in case I want to switch out my current ride. Thanks!
Thank you! Check the used market. Unfortunately, dealers aren’t bringing in many more new ones if any at all. There may be some new ones on the lots though, but it’s slim pickings these days.
Hey Jersey boy. I am also from New Jersey. I’m in South Jersey. Where did you go to get your tune done ? I have that same exact car in the same exact color.
apparently the auto transmission cant be tuned? its apparently to fragile and all im wanting to get an intake and exhaust on mine and i was told that by a tuner
I heard running an OTS map on accessport for AEM CAI works. I'm not looking to do this myself, but just want to hear people's thoughts on this matter. I'm waiting to put a few things on and then getting it dyno tuned in one shot. Has anyone else heard about this? Sounds sketchy
A man of refined taste, I've always said less is more. Here cause I just picked up a 2019 sti! Side note: the car only has 16,000 kms on it and second gear pulls have a couple dead zones in the powerband, feels like a dirty maf im gonna try that. But it also has me worried the dealership put the wrong gas in, feels like the car if pulling timing at higher boost. If anyone has suggestions i'd love to hear em, gonna run out this current tank of gas and put in the good stuff to see if it helps. Car is stock
Love the look of your STI. I agree with everything you said. Mine is a 2017. I’ve had a few minor adds, Invidia Gemini R400 exhaust, which admittedly is a bit loud but too late now. IAG air/oil separator, and the COBB accessport. I was considering changing out the stock turbo for the COBB 20G turbo but I have a lot of questions still. Great video. Thanks. 😊
Wether I like your car look or I don't, really doesn't matter. I will respect how you do the look of your subi.. Mine is catless 656whp 2011 wrx with some tough stickers..
Came here to find 5 things I should never do with a wrx or sti. :Changing the intake without a tune. Excellent. :Putting lights on the front of your car. Personal preference. :Fully venting bov, bad. Don't do this. :Carbon fiber. Personal preference. :Catless exhaust system. Personal preference. But good advice if you aren't getting tuned. I would have liked to hear your thoughts on why with these 5 specific things to never do. 1.Intake without a tune is bad because the ecu needs to know what the new Maf scaling is because the metered air coming into the engine is being changed. Therefore your fuel needs are also changed. 2.Swapping your blow off valve which recirculates the air that has been measured by the Maf is bad. This means that if you vent the air to hear that sweet swish sound it isn't going to mix with the fuel that the maf asked for causing the engine to run rich momentarily. You can get an aftermarket bov that has recirculation function kept in. Go fast bits offers an adjustable bov that allows you to partially vent and also recirculate. All the way to fully venting. 3.Catless downpipe can cause boost creep because you are increasing the flow of exhaust out of the turbo and allowing the turbine to spin more freely. The stock waste gate and boost controller can have a tough time managing this. But that also applies to high flow cat down pipes as well. So it comes down to personal preference. If you change the stock downpipe at all you should be upgrading the boost control solenoid and getting a tune done. 4.Too many lights on the front of your car. While completely personal preference, it can lead to issues in the charging system. Having too many things drawing a load on the charging system can lead to issues with engine performance. The more voltage drawn away from your fueling and ignition system the more likely you can run into injectors not pulsing correctly and weak spark delivery. This isn't likely with oem lighting, but if you're slapping those giant light bars on adding rally style fog lights, a sub woofer and 3 amps, you can see how this can lead to issues later on. 5. Carbon fiber. Completely personal preference. If you have the money and want to slap carbon fiber everywhere that's up to you. This isn't something you should never do. If it were me adding one more to the list. Never launch your wrx or sti without slipping the clutch. The awd system isn't likely to spin the tires and you're just going to shock the shit out of your drive train. Also roll into boost after 3k rpm. Don't just jam the throttle in low rpm as it puts a lot of load on the engine. Super clean Sti, appreciate the content. 👍
For one, this is one of the best builds on an STI I’ve seen in a while. I love the mild but super flavorful style like this. For two. Those are the absolute best wheels I’ve seen paired with the lapis blue. Swear to god. Chefs kiss.
I have a 2019 with a cat back system on and I’ve had zero issues with it. Definitely sounds more like an sti. It runs at a comfortable tone and only loud when you want it to be.
I personally use manual all the way back (loosest setting). I feel like auto implies that adjustments are being automatically made from time to time as you drive, causing wear on the parts involved with making the adjustments. (Servos and stuff)
@@Scoobyfreak86 thanks for the reply man, I'm guessing i should go to a tuner to see if it's tuned for it? Any signs i can tell it's not tuned for that bov
Did it come with an accessport? If so, most likely tuned, but you can run some data logs to send to a tuner to read. You can tell if the car is running rough or cutting if out under wot. There’s a lot of issues that can present themselves when driving. Nothing you can physically see other than the part itself.
Can’t get over how clean your subie looks. I’m interested in picking one up but not sure whether to buy now vs wait for the next gen. but if the next gen sti looks like the leaked images on the web... hard pass.
You might find this video useful. I go over if someone should wait for the new gen or not. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qrajb3QDOKg.html
Your tastes are pretty similar to mine, keep it simple and tasteful, though if i get one of these id probably stick a sports cat in since ill want it running around the 430 hp mark as well as pass emissions with one.
Hi Scooby, been watching many of your tubes and they are very helpful for STI newbie like me. 100% agreement that keeping clean and simple and enjoy the car the way it was designed to have fun. thank you for your good works
Presentation on point Chris💯👌 fully supported your opinion, same here. Keeping simple , clean and less is more.. also my personal opinion no discouragement to anyone...but the most important aspect of this vlog - no BS talk ! Following your IG also. Cheers mate. Mike🇨🇦
Heyy Broo thanks for the video ! I’m currently hunting for a Subaru i found an sti 2016 75k miles btw this will be my first Subaru always been a Honda owner lmao I know red flag Honda owner here but Noo bro I want to do things right plus I don’t want to go crazy modding the car even one is telling me to avoid any issues in general just do catback exhaust I don’t want to go for power I just want to make it sound decent and lower the car and slap some wheels and some body kits and call it a day you think with just a catback exhaust system I should be fine ?
Nothing wrong with Honda at all. Catback will be just fine as no tune is needed for that. A simple muffler delete axle-back is even simpler and will yield similar results. Just be careful buying higher mileage/used wrx or STI's. Most likely it has been modified, so do the homework and have the car looked over thoroughly prior to purchase.
What bpv do you have?? I was gonna go bov but dont wanna get a costume tune just yet too expensive for just that. Should i get an intake and a cobb accessport or what would be the best option?
Too much of a good thing is generally not a good thing. Moderation is the key. This philosophy applies to, to the God awful OEM interior plastic finishes in a Subaru. Replacing a fair bit of them with something coordinated and superior to get rid of the inferior can be a good thing to do. Carbon fiber can fit the bill if care and planning are your guide, to conceal and hide the aforementioned sea of poor OEM plastic inside. Take a look at what I have done, I personally think 🤔 it is not over done. My customized carbon is on IG. I invite you to see, what can be done I feel tastefully. And should you not agree that is perfectly okay 👌 with me.
I would suggest sitting in a previous gen wrx or STI. You’ll learn to appreciate how much nicer the materials are in the current gen. Not German quality, but wayyyy better than they used to be.
Dog my WRX had LED's all in the headlights when I got it and they've all failed since I got the car 6 months ago lmao I went back to Syvlania Halogens all around 100% no regret
