Again, I love that you encourage us to keep quality and just work with it. It also cuts down on unnecessary waste. Just about everything will eventually be dated and then come back into style in some form. Like you say, embrace it!

Let’s hear it for embracing old, vintage bathrooms!! My last house had a beautiful 1930s bathroom with the 1930s tub, bath/shower knobs and tile. It was all black and white and I LOVED it! I had the house renovated but wouldn’t let them touch that bathroom. I am all for embracing vintage bathrooms!

Black ceramic.....love that for you but I'm not the one. LOL

My sister in law has a black ceramic toilet in the powder room. It’s mixed with medium brown sleek woods, stone sink and amber glass tiled mirror. Looks great.

I love decorating with black. I’m remodeling my bathroom and considering a black cast iron tub.

You just put me over the moon, Garrett! My house is circa 1925, and in 2000 I remodeled the bathrooms. I did mine in black and tobacco granites with a black pedistal sink and commode. Black granite baseboards and border on the floor. Ceiling moldings. Very masculine. I wanted to be true to the era of the house and wanted something timeless. I had no idea I was so prescient and courting the LeChic official seal of approval. Thanks! You made my day!

I'm redoing a bathroom and as I choose fixtures, tiles, and decor, I ask myself, "Would this be LeChic approved?" 😃 I'm hoping it is. Thanks for all the tips and guidance!! I also love how mosaic (especially penny) tiles are great for traction and help keep people from slipping on those wet floors.

I'm all in on a Ralph Lauren masculine bathroom. I love that look for a small powder room as well.

My rental has most of the original tile, light yellow (which I would not choose) with a black border (which I love). The one thing with black is it does show every molecule of dust so it might be hard to maintain over a large area. Still, the black trim in the bathroom is inspiring me to introduce black accents in the rest of the apartment.

ABSOLUTELY WANT A HEATED TOWEL BAR- soooooo luxurious

Also a partition wall is nice to separate a toilet area, or a door, sectioned off is great. I’m super lucky to have a separate toilet closet right now. Love it.

My mother-in-law put in light pink bathroom fixtures, pink and white mosaic floor tile, pink 6” squares for 40” of wall space. The drywall and ceilings are white. Red and white toile pleated cotton curtains on the windows. Sixty years later, these bath and dressing rooms still look stylish and fresh.

Such great advice and examples, as always. I personally love panelling and bead board in bathrooms - I didn’t realize that some people think it looks cheap as I always thought it looked classic.

The black ceramics are gorgeous if done right. Your example with the faux crocodile wallpaper, black vein marble and gold accents and metals WORKS! You (IMHO) can especially get away with it in a powder room where you don't spend a lot of time and want drama, OR, in a masculine bathroom. I LOVE a masculine, dramatic bathroom too!! Go for it Garrett! And, if you don't want a heated towel rod on your wall, think of installing one of the kitchen warming drawers instead.... warm towels all tucked away!

I once had a house with a guest powder room that was tiled halfway up with turquoise tiles with black trim. I didn’t have the money yet to redo it, so I had to live with it. I got creative and turned it into a 50’s bathroom. I hung different license plates, fuzzy dice, old 45 records and retro photos ( James Dean, etc.) and other time pieces. Everyone got a kick out of it! You sometimes have to work with what you have.

The heated towel rack that I have simply plugs into the wall. No plumbing needed. 🙂 Where's Albert and the other lovely pooch of yours? They are so adorable! ❤️

The dated garden tub can be a challenge. We are looking to buy soon and many of the houses are built in the 90' and 2000's so they have the garden tub, often stuck in the corner. I will definitely be looking for ideas. I wouldn't mind an older house with the colored tiles. I think they can actually be fun, especially with the new wallpapers.

I adore color and never want anyone to rip out those vintage colored tiles. If you find matching towels and tile an overwhelming amount of pink (since pink was the example) -- all black accessories look really sharp, and all white accessories looks very harmonious and hygienic. And it tones down the profusion of pink.

I love this video and am gonna share it with my husband. He is in flooring and bathrooms, and you should see what he did with our garden tub! It is white, and we have porcelain tile all the way up the walls that looks like white marble with gray veining. But the real treat, an irregular, abstract mosaic tile that evokes a disco ball, with white gray and silver. He fronted the tub with it and cut kurdy board in an accordion manner to make rounded half columns on either side, going up to a pedestal height so we can put candles or jars of bath salts on top. These are covered in the same mosaic. Gorgeous!

I love black bathroom ceramics, I think they look chic in--as you said--a high-contrast space. I wish colored ceramics were more common, white is so ubiquitous it's boring. I remember my great aunt had a pink bathroom when I was a kid in the 80s. The ceramics were all baby pink, it was so lovely.

Hey, Garrett! I love all of these "dated" bathroom trends as well -- especially tiled floors with borders! I lived in L.A. in the West Hollywood area for 4 1/2 years -- until 2019 -- and the old, vintage, bathrooms were considered desirable. Efforts were made to preserve the historic tiles and fixtures, and to elevate them into a more modern, designed look -- frequently, as you recommend, through a monochromatic color scheme. My husband and I lived in an old apartment that had been built in 1920, along with the original hardwood floors, bathroom tile, ornate oak staircase, and original art deco light fixtures. I think that it's a crime to totally gut the old, charming bathrooms. (PS: Your hair looks amazing in this video!)

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I can't imagine myself having a high contrast jet black toilet either!! The heated towel bar us such an amazing feature to have in the bathroom. I used to live in Germany and these were very common in bathrooms there. It's a very luxurious feature in addition to the hidden tank and wall mounted flush thingy.

As a goth black ceramics becoming trendy again makes my heart sing! My plan for my first and hopefully last house has always been a black and white bathroom. 🖤

I enjoy the manner in which you integrate concepts for "timelessness"! We've lived in our home since we had it built 48 years ago. I have a sense of timeless class in what I love all the years I have been shopping and integrating. Yes, we live in a common subdivision, but our home and gardens are considered the one with the most timeless beauty and class. The three bathrooms in our home have a masculine black and gold vertical lines wallpaper of which has been here since we built our home and We have not tired of it. In the masculine bedroom with the sinks separate from the toilet and shower room, still love it!!! My bathroom (beautiful classic gold foil with painted peach roses, carpeted and accented with aqua tub curtain (which covers a shower rod which I hang my seasonal clothing and dress each morning for convenience), aqua towels and aqua bath rug as accents to a 1950's black lacquer 36" high scene of a white abalone peacock with an aqua abalone shell tail and white abalone flowers in the frame which complement the wallpaper. This is a favorite small luxurious and enjoyable room of which I have never tired of. So, that puts me at age 75 going on 76. I was 27 when I designed and built the home and have decorated with the things I absolutely love!!! I utilized small trend items from time-to-time to integrate some of the new with the various antiques and contemporary items. You really do have a great, practical vision of encouraging others to love what they have and integrate a trend where applicable, thank you!!!!!

I lived in an older home with a pink and black bathroom…I just went with it and did all black accessories…towels, bath mat, etc. I loved it.

We’ve had heated towel racks for a long time, and it’s besides my mattress the thing I miss most when I travel. I too love panelling of any kind. Shiplap too for it’s simplicity. Just because it’s been featured on a certain TV show so much doesn’t mean it’s automatically in everybody’s home. We recently house hunted, and I didn’t see it even once. Lots of board & batten though. I grew up in Europe, where you find a lot of floor to ceiling tile in bathrooms. I find that so boring, which is why I always adored English bathrooms.

Wow, those "masculine" bathrooms are really appealling! Like watching The English Patient or something. I want to bring in a phonograph player and a crystal decanter, sling a silk robe over a chair, and lounge in the tub, sipping brandy and listening to records. Not just for men! ❤️

It’s a designers challenge to make the tiniest powder room or bathroom a WOW FACTOR. it welcomes guests and it should be stunning. But achieving that is not easy. I have a builders powder room I haven’t renovated yet so I thank you for your suggestions. You are awesome

In our last house there were four bathrooms, each in a hideous (to me) color way; maroon/pink, bright blue/black. Black/yellow/red, and brown and ochre. I left them alone and worked around the colors, preferring to spendmy money on the kitchen re-do. In our next, “forever” house I did four bathrooms; all w hite, subway tilein the showers. And by the way I am constantly amazed at the posh bathroom makeovers in America that never feature bidets.

In very specific spaces black ceramics can work. I just don’t know how to make sure a black toilet is clean??

I love this video. You were reading my mind. I am currently freshening my 1974 vintage yellow/gold bathroom. It has a yellow/gold tile floor , tub, tile border and towel bar. I have another bathroom that is 1974 two tone beige tile. The tile is in good condition. I was thinking of saving it until I have the money to replace it. I may try the monochromatic. I love the black and white mosaic floor. Same for subway tiles. I think I mentioned this the first time I watched this video, but heated towel holders are readily available. Not necessarily as fancy as the ones you are showing but they are out there, including free standing ones.

The blue tile bathroom is off the chart genius. Love the darker blue on the ceiling, and that forgotten wallpaper. Great plan to keep the vintage going.

LOVE the mosaic floors, totally reminds me of growing up in London UK any visits to stately homes always featured the black and white mosaic floor. That can never go out of style it is so classy!

In our home, we have an adorable tiny peach tile bathroom from 1946 and I'm just so happy with it. And now I've learned that you like it too! I also like how you embrace a luxurious esthetic without apologizing, and without insisting that everything needs to be expensive. One more thing I like about you is that you encourage people to look into ideas and see if they are right for them and their space -- you aren't prescribing what everyone *should* do. This was a really fun one for me, Garrett! I have always been obsessed with crown molding everywhere myself. In a bathroom is no exception. I love going into restaurants, hotels, any business I’ve seen with unique bathrooms. Clean & unique. Being the smallest room in the house, it’s fun to play around with that little space to make it more interesting.

I have one of those bathtubs you were talking about. I was dreading about how to get rid of it to install a stand alone soaking tub instead. That’s a lot of work. After watching your video, I’m keeping it and going style it beautifully instead. Thanks.

I also wanted to say how much I am moved by your devotion to Albert. He is such a precious little soul.

Couldn't agree more with you! I am currently designing my powder room with a black ceramic sink and toilet and I love them! I chose both to balance out my black funky wallpaper (with crown molding) above cloudy white wainscot panels! To me, a glossy black sink and/or toilet add elements of moody sophistication to a bathroom that I hope more people consider! Also, I love that you mentioned just because paneling is cheaper than tile, that doesn't mean it looks "cheap!" It's cost-effective and fabulous, especially when paired with a beautiful wallpaper.

I love black bathroom fixtures! In my mind they are so elegant looking! But if you have a furnace or an air conditioner not only do you have to clean Your black fixtures but you have to “dust them” as well. Like dark wood flooring they show every ounce of dust. But that being said, I would be more than happy to bring my little swiffer duster into the bathroom every time I visited if I could have fabulous black fixtures! Unfortunately they will also show wear sooner than white fixtures but so gorgeous!

We had guest powder room with black toilet & black sink growing up - I loved it! It looked so elegant and polished. I know people say white has a clean look - but black when it's well done can look very clean and fresh. I also hope the idea of separating the sink into a dressing area and leaving the toilet & shower in a closed off room catches on. I love that idea. It's so frustrating in the morning trying to do your hair, make-up or put in contact lenses in a mirror after a shower. Loving your video topics!

Love my heated towel rail. In South Australia we get hot summers and cold winters, so it’s a must for the cooler weather. (We are in Autumn now) Mine swivels out from the wall and is on a timer so it can be programmed for anything from 1-24 hours a day. By the way Garrett, you look especially happy in this video. Always smiling and positive, but just a bit extra today.😃🇦🇺

Black ceramics...I never thought about...until now. 🤔 I cannot abide carpeting in bathrooms.

Love all these ideas with the possible exception of the glass screen round the loo - not sure whether it's the look or my general hatred of cleaning glass. I find glass the slightest mark makes glass look grubby, especially on large glass surfaces. The less I have to clean, the better 😂)! Not really come across black ceramics before but the examples you showed look great with the more traditional detailing and the contrasting gold tones. And those mosaic floors looked lush. Panelling is less common in UK bathrooms, but I think it always looks good and you can style it to look stylish and sophisticated or cosy and cottagey. If you're worried about it deteriorating in the damp, there are moisture-resistant MDF and engineered wood versions specifically for bathrooms that you can install and paint to get the same look but with a bit more moisture resistance.

Superb video, and your moss green plaid ... love-love! My dated bathroom style pick is the glass block shower enclosure. Inherited this and found the squares of wavy glass perfectly echoed the handmade mosaic detail of the shower tile, so I kept it. Dickens to keep clean but no need for a shower curtain or liner.

Just found you, and yes, interesting segments so I have subscribed. As to bathroom no-nos for me, I can't do the black sink & toilet. Hard to clean and see if it's clean - have the same beef with black countertops in kitchens. Weenie glass "panel" on step in showers - these rarely work well - unless the shower itself is very deep - and the amount of water splashing everywhere is audacious. Also on my list on no-nos are the black & white hex floors - love the look, but if you have ever tried to clean the grout you will curse the day. Totally agree on masculine bathrooms, I love the look of different stones, woods and tiles, reminds me of Japan if it is done properly. Vintage bathrooms I do tend to love as long as they are 1920s-50s.

Hi Garrett, Great video! About black toilets: our rental house, while building own new one, had a black toilet in the powder room. My first thought: somebody could be bleeding to death and not know it! About monochromatic bathrooms and panelling: my powder room is forest green. The “panelling” is subway tiles in the Victorian manner, with matching tile baseboards and chair rail. The wall above is wallpapered with a William Morris print (mostly green) and the undermount sink is forest green faceted glass installed in green onyx. Green, green, green. Crown moulding everywhere! All Le Chic approved!

Oh Garrett! Love that green plaid shirt! I think black porcelain fixtures look great, especially in a powder room, where you can add some bold wallpaper to accentuate how sophisticated they are. I also really like them with the polished brass or gold tone fixtures and faucets!
