Hi squidmar, your friendly fan geologist/sand enthusiast here. The sands are different sizes based on the strength/speed of the water that deposited them there where you found it. Or from the length of time they have been transported from their original location as part of a rock. If they are nearby to their source they will be bigger and less broken up. It can also depend on the mechanical properties of the particles whether they are hard or soft. Sand near the beach is continually broken into smaller sized particles from repeated wave patterns compared to sands up in hills or other land based locations.

Out of interest, is removing sand from beaches not hastening erosion? It's something that I was taught that removing sand was a bad thing. Now, in this hobby context the tiny quantities probably don't matter.. Unless every single one of Emil's subscribers go to the same beach at the same time.... O.O

@@samprastherabbit i was always told this is due to people taking sand from beaches on holidays and then returning home with it as souvineres, and the poblem being that they may then bring back foreign diseases in the sand that could impact the local eco system if that same sand manages to find its way outside ect

@@bensonkattenhorn1495 it's both. Taking sand and pebble speeds up erosion, it's illegal in the UK can face a fine of £1,000. The eco contaminate is an issue too, a man in my town swept up sand from his garden and dumped it back on the sand dunes and was fined for littering for the same reason you mentioned, spreading potential contaminates from his garden.

If you're looking for in-scale sand, instead of using pigments, you can use tile grout. It's superfine, available in a variety of colours, and inexpensive.

Some awesome ideas - I'm half way through making a base for a chaos/daemon Knight but have used the sprue & built layers up with a few pieces of models that failed or left over parts but this has helped fill in a few gaps,thank you :) hope your keeping safe as well as everyone else - peace

Good list! I love using some kind of paste when doing bases (eg "Vallejo Textures: Rough White Pumice", though putty for fixing walls are much cheaper). Makes for a great foundation to slap on the other elements (rocks, sand, bark etc) or use by itself as mud.

Your ability to design and see what is not there yet is astounding. I'm like I would love to start doing this but I kind of go in it with an outline in my head and see what shows up in reality. I almost never am able to sketch something and build it to look like the sketch. Major props to you for being able to have a great vision!

Great video as usual! I love dioramas, but since I don't have much room space at home (and less with a child on the way), I stick to creating bases. I use pine bark a lot and I love vallejo water. Another thing that works a lot for floors are the texture rolling pins from Green Stuff world. they are amazing.

About sand sizes! I know this one! I used to work for an aggregate company. You know, one of those places that sells road base materials and rocks. They get their stuff to various sizes by using sieves. Even if you've never used a place like that yourself personally, I guarantee you've driven past a quarry in your life. Getting the industrial sieves is pretty pricey (about $160 USD for a set of hand sieves) but if you know anyone who works at a dirt lab and get them a bucket of dirt, they might be able to help you out. A way to do it yourself is get some different mesh cloths and simply strain it out like you're baking. A lot of guys have that kind of stuff around for basing models anyway because it makes good fences or like industrial flooring. Obviously the tighter the gaps, the finer the sand so getting some meshes with different sized weaves let's you soft for different sizes. Hope this helps!

I recently made some stalagtites for necron bases using that tissue from inside shoe boxes and gift stuff mixed with podge- I didnt want to use up all my Milliput so I tried it and it was surprisingly easy to shape and they all hardened up quite nicely with a nice rough texture. It turns into kind of a goop but I can see alot of uses for a substance that is more stiff than paste and more mushy than clay.

I like to use cat litter for rocky ground. It works well for the most part with the ca glue and of course it clumps when it is wet. I picked up some cheap dollar store bag that i will probably never go though the whole thing but it was like 4 dollars.

I'm always surprised at how much material pro painters buy from specialized stores. Maybe that's just because I'm on a budget, but I tend to get most of the materials you mentioned for free in the forest (bark, lichens, dry wood, slate, even plastic bits and polystyrene on the river banks), of in bulk at the hardware store (flooring cork, pigments, resin, cardboad from the bin). I even found a source of plastic plants at my local cemetery, these things tend to break off and bits of them litter the alleys, I was thanked for cleaning up! I get all I need to build terrain just by walking the dog.

decorative bark is usually available as course orchid bark and available from most hardware stores and nurseries

just a quick side note on the coffestirs i used ice cream sticks instead but i think you can use the coffestirs also. If you want to make the wood texture pop. Get a hold of a wire brush (the kind you use to clean grills) and go to town you your coffestirs you will get some fine grains on the stick you use.

Sand can be used for texturing and to fill in seams. So what you're telling me is that it is coarse, its rough and it gets everywhere.

Hi Squidmar, great video's and tips! I have a question; I found a very nice oak three branch that I cut in pieces. One of the pieces would be really nice to make a waterfall base for a miniature. But i'm a bit worried about using a solid block of wood in combination with paints, water and other stuff. What do you recommend? Is it usable at all and if so, how do I prepare it? The Oaken wooden block is already dry. Thx!

Stole my lizards sterile sand for the terrarium, super fine and works great for texture that need a fine surface but not clumps and rocks in it.

PSA: IKEA in the US doesn't have coconut fiber. They use the same name for clay planting medium in US stores (at least around here) so best to order online from amazon or somewhere.

Entertaining educational on the subject I felt as boring but your ideas replace just the broken cork material I've used in the past after watching many of your videos I'm going to try to paint after an accident which gave my hands a permanent tremor holding anything off more than a few seconds. I know this sounds ott but I have found that I prefer your painting style on miniatures the finish is always perfect!

What about Moss? There are so many types you can dry abd use. Larger types can be used as Tree, the usual type can be used for bushes or similar.

Many materials and textures can be replicated using only rocks. Yes, this requires some serious skill in painting when you try to create things like wood or dirt, but this is the cheapest and most universal material I know. Go out, get a bunch of small rocks from all over, and you can chip or grind them into shape, and you can use the left over dust and debris as... dust and debris, haha. Also, you do not need expensive tools for this. If you get 2 fist sized rocks, you can chip of large pieces by smashing them together. Oh and bricks, old bricks are awesome.

I keep harassing my lgs to carry terrain stuff. Other things I've used for terrain: abalone shell pieces for rocks, sticks from the yard for logs, and sliced up portions of the runners that minis come on for individual bricks.

Don't just go to gaming stores for your grass tufts and ground cover. Try hobby shops that deal with model railroads. You might find the same thing in bigger quantities so more economical. Remember a model railroad is a hugh version of your gaming base. But the starting base for model railroad is about 4 ft. X 8ft.

Keeping reptiles and crafting miniatures often overlaps for me. I use a lot of these techniques for making reptile enclosures, and have a lot of these materials on hand due to this.

In Nevada, a lot of our dirt isn't what I would call the best for terrain. It is super fine (but also dusty), but that's after sorting through the insane amount of rocks in the ground and you have to claw at it with a gardener's rake. It's free though, so no complaints.

You can use a citchen sieve to get rid of bigger clumps or rocks and separate the coarse sand from the fine stuff.

@@fridaemmamadeleine Good idea. I don't mind the rocks sometimes, they are useful. The main issue I have is our dirt is rather dusty. I wish it was more like beach sand. Free is free thought :)
