Good point about paw.... never thought about that.

I have found paw helpful for dogs that do not like their feet touched. Yes you may need to teach the dog they only get rewarded when it is asked for. It also seems to make some people less intimidated by a dog.

My sister taught my dog 'paw' when I had to leave him with her for awhile. The amount of times he has hit me in the groin, thighs and knees has been exceedingly frustrating. Eventually I decided to wear a cup until I trained him with a better behaviour. He'll sit and wait now, though when he gets impatient he'll brush up against my leg periodically; that or bark if he can get to his toy by himself.

I have never and will never own a dog, why am I so interested in this channel?

I think the idea for paw is mainly just discipline, and it's cool 😂 my dog doesn't randomly paw, if she wants food she'll stare you down until you sweat 😁 it's cute too she looks like she's doing a business deal with someone she doesn't like 😂

hello! Just wanted to let you know that I found this video extremely insightful and helpful. I don’t have a dog right now, but have been contemplating dog ownership and have been spending a lot of time researching and learning about proper obedience training. Videos like this are super helpful to gain insight into the process, what it looks like, and the huge commitment it takes to develop a relationship and a training program for a companion animal. This is really excellent content, and your passion so apparently shines through. Thanks so much for putting it out there for all of us who are eager to learn!

I use "free" for the break command for our Dobermans. Our pups are crate trained for the day and evenings. They snooze at the end of the bed after 6 months of crate training, but still use the crate for rest whilst we're awake. How the hell am I like a hundred hours into your content and have never seen you mention Leave It? It's so useful!

How do I get my dog to understand the free word, I've been constantly working with her, because she's so so smart, she so extremely hyper. But when we're working on a command and I try to release her, she just keeps doing it. I can't seem to get her to recognize she's free to have the ball, or the treat etc... she learns super fast then we just use them every day all day.

I took on my neighbour’s lab 18 months ago and obedience trained him with your methods. He learned everything quickly like he’d watched the videos. Now I run him HARD off lead and he gets 90 minutes of vigorous running and complicated retrieves. Other than treat training, which he doesn’t care about, everything you demonstrate works with Winny.

My dog does know paw (as well as high-five, and jumping high-five), however we made sure early on that she knows the only way she's going to get anything she wants is by sitting, and only sitting. So she never swats or jumps at anyone. Granted, she is a Golden Retriever and therefore it was pretty easy to teach her that, not sure I'd attempt it with a Bulldog or something 😅

The last point of teaching “paw” or shake as I’ve used it. It’s interesting. I had a dog about 10 years ago that I taught to shake. When he was in trouble for something he would lift his paw to shake on it. I wasn’t quite sure but I interpreted it at the time as “I’m sorry” It’s hard to say what he was really thinking but he was a pit/red heeler. Super smart dog. I loved him. I’m on day 3 of a shelter rescue. She’s a lab/ maybe German shepherd? Not sure. Definitely wants to please and these videos are great to gain some perspective.

I have a question i hop you can help me with. I have a 5 month old female golden retriever. After researching the breed we felt it would be the best fit for our family of me my husband my 10 year old son and 3 year old daughter. She is a very intelligent dog and very easy to train. My question is she seems to be showing signs of aggression towards my 10yr old whenever he tries to correct her. She never does to anyone else. When shes being over excited with him amd he wants her to stop he stands up and tries to body block her back. She then will snap at the air and show teeth. Im not sure the right correction for this. Right now ive been stepping in and removing her from the room but i would love some advice on this please.

Do you recommend a harness please? For a strong large dog with multiple points that I can trust not to break ?Tysm

I've never taught gimme a paw, some of my friends come over and say "gimme a paw" Wali hasn't a clue, but knows sit, stay, spit it out (give), leave it, flip (roll over) up, down, inside, seek (our personal favourite, she goes crazy trying to find what I've dropped). Just watch, Stand, hold still (for cleaning her eyes etc) bring it (to me and fetch) get yer (toy name or bone).. I have 4 acres. Thinking of building an agility course here. Wali is an Australian cattle dog. (border collie level of energy) high chase drive. We have chickens and chicks, cats and kittens (HER CATS) but she is good with them. There are wild rabbits of course and she chases them (unsuccessfully though)

Hi! I don’t know if my question even reaches you, but if does, and you can answer it, i would highly appreciate it. 😊 I have a 2 years old female akita. In training I use a lot of methods I learned from you, these help me a lot. One of our biggest challenge was fear based reactivity to other people. When we started training that, she was barking to almost every single stranger on the streets. Now we got to the point, that we can easily go to anyone, I make her sit or lie down next to me, we’re talking with the other person, and she’s calm and relaxed. First of all thank you for your contents, without them I think it was harder. The only issue we still have, if someone wants to pet or touch her, she barkes to the person. It’s clearly fear based because of her body language. Don’t get me wrong, I’m OK if strangers can’t pet or touch her, as she behaves well. If someone asks me to pet my dog, I always say no. But I really feel like it’s time to step forward. I want to teach her, that if someone pets her it’s a good thing, and the other reason is security. We didn’t have any problem in the past because of her good obidience, but you can never know, when there’s a kid running to her, and I don’t realise it. 1st question: Do you think it’s a realistic expectation to reach that level? 2nd question: If you do, what would be your strategy? Do you have any video about that? One of my biggest dreams is to work with you face to face, even though it’s impossible, as I live in Hungary. Thank you for your reply!

I've tried the methods you suggest, Will, for stopping a dog pulling on our 7 month old (probably mostly Cretan Hound mix) and it's perfect, while we're doing the back and forth and rewarding. but as soon as we start going anywhere straight, it's pulling time. I think he sees it as a game and when that's over, he doesn't need to do it any more. How do I deal with this? Also, recall is awful, even following your methods. Once he has his snout in a mouse hole, there's no getting him out other than dragging him away!

Hello Will, I enjoy your videos and used the tactics in training my 10 month old black cocker spaniel. The main stumbling block with my dog is in the car. he travels ok and on journeys longer than 5 miles he will settle on the back seat until i stop. But the start of the journey is one problem. he will willing jump in on the rear seat as I have a harness on him and seat belt attachment to the harness,,, I can get him to sit and give a treat but its after that he will fight me in play biting to clip the harness in place. I get the harness secured then set off but he will bark and dig at the seats like hes trying to dig for something. Then when i reach a place im stopping at he starts to bark and continues after i leave the car until i am out of sight,,, then on return he will commence barking and even when i get in the car until on the move and he settles. I have tried making him settle and praise him when he still and quiet and give a treat. is there anything * you* or readers on here would recommend. I would love the day when I can leave him in the car if I am just leaving the car for a few mins. thank you . kevin

What do you guys do when you put things into practice and everything goes completely wrong and you feel defeated? Someone and their dog came out of the woods into the field we were training in. Caught us completely off guard and the whole rest of the day was a challenge.

Your lessons should be compulsory for every new dog owner with an annual refresher. Not optional, not 'extra', not OTT - simply compulsory. If they were there would be no more dog bites, no more aggressive behaviours or attacks, no more abuse, & a nation full of happy well adjusted doggies. I'd say it's more crucial than passing a drivers test. Dog owners with L plates and a year's probation. I speak as someone who rescued abused dogs for decades & the only trouble I ever got was the abuse from other irresponsible dog owners whose animals were harassing us.

The law thing is a great lesson. I had a rescue who was emotionally needy would paw …. But he was a mastif mix so his mitts were too heavy and giant for it to be safe with most people.

My (now ex) partner made my dog hate her crate because he left her in it too much. I am not impressed. Thankfully, she has gotten a little better... but more importantly, she is a well behaved dogs and can be left out rather than in her crate. But, I am pissed he made her scared of it. She likes it when the door is open, but hates being put in there. My poor girl.
