Window covers are a great addition to a van conversion!
I use mine as a way to reflect the sun out in the summer, so to keep the van cool, but also to reduce a bit of the condensation on the windows when we’re staying in the van at night.
So here are 5 things to consider with thermal window covers…
They won’t magically heat up the van! Whilst they might help insulate the single-glazed windows of your vehicle, don’t expect them to magically warm up the van or car on a cold day. They might help to reduce heat loss a little bit but for actual warmth, you’ll need to install a heater!
When you’ve got them up in your windows, they may identify your van as being slept-in. Not a problem if you’re in a campsite, but if you’re on the road, or perhaps somewhere you shouldn’t be, then a black outer material might be the option for you. They won’t be reflective and will blend better behind tinted windows and at night!
How will you attach them? I’ve used suction cups, which work well and give a bit of an air gap between the cover and the window. But I’ve recently tried a tight fit with loops and that’s worked well too, though it’s better for small windows. You could also try magnets onto the metal of the van or velcro if the van is carpeted.
They won’t stop condensation from forming. But they will help to reduce it, and that’s about as much as you can ask for when sleeping in a van without using a heater. If it’s too hot out for a heater, then consider airflow by cracking the windows or installing a ceiling fan or vent.
Thermal window covers are expensive. If you’re interested in saving some money then check out my channel where I’ve got a simple tutorial on how to make them. It’s a great way to use up leftover foil bubble wrap insulation from your van build and doing them yourself means you can easily customise to match the look of your van conversion!

DISCLAIMER: In this video, I am in no way stating that this is the proper way to undertake the conversion of a van, however after research and experience using the van, I believe this to be the way that is best suited to my van and the way I intend to use it.

For those using reflective (foil) window covers: Know that even if you were to cover the reflective material in (say) a mat black cloth type material, you still will have the benefit of the reflective material but with the added stealth factor where the window covers don't stand out like a reflective sore thumb...

This is the inspiration I needed. I’m doing this with my NV200 van.

Airflow is the only option (other than not breathing) if you want to reduce condensation. I had some window deflectors for for my old VW T25 as two adults and two (sometimes damp) dogs used to leave the windows swimming in the morning. With my current demountable camper the double glazed plastic windows and roof vents mean that condensation is not a problem even if I get my way and the heating isn't used at night.

What if it's a black thermal cover?. Do they really block out the wind?
