FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

Have been following your progress for many years. You have now entered a whole new realm. I thought you did great in a non-specific aerobatic designed aircraft. This is where sports psychology come to the forefront of flying. Being able to go out for every flight with a pre-planned set of tasks and not wasting time flying around in a recreational sport la-de-lah mode of mine thinking should enable you to make measurable progress. What some non-aviation watchers might be surprised at is that your 'coach' is not in the aircraft with you but on the ground. Coaches have the experience and knowledge to know that you are off by 5 degrees, or too slow, too quick etc., it is as though they are in the aircraft with you, seeing every little control input. For non-aerobatic pilots it's like voodoo! For anyone doing competition aerobatic pilots it makes you a safer general aviation pilot. When you go back to a C172 or whatever GA aircraft you find that you 'feel' more about how the aircraft is flying and you are so much more 'ahead' of the aircraft you have significant extra mental capacity for other things that your safety margin increase exponentially. Even if a GA pilot does not want to go hardcore aerobatics the gains that are made through 'upset' training have a significant impact on your overall flying career that I would commend any pilot to take some form of aerobatic training. Hope you continue your aerobatic journey and progress to an all-out aerobatic monoplane (or biplane, perhaps!)

That's so cool that you took Luke for an aerobatic ride! I'm starting to get into young eagles with the EAA to share aviation with the next generation as any time I've taken a friend's child it has been super rewarding. It was also great to stop by and talk with you at Air Venture 2023. I love your videos and like I said in person you were part of the big inspiration that got me into training and flying. Keep on doing you, I think you're an inspiration for the right attitudes of self improvement with your introspective style. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.

Man, that looks like so much fun. I liked being able to see your panel during that sequence. I know I'm a 4G pilot and it looks like you stayed under that plenty. Can't wait to see it again when you have it perfected-ish.

Would it be possible/practical to disable some of those alerts/warnings when you've flipped "the fun switch"? Not so much to keep them from distracting you, but to avoid "normalizing" ignoring alerts/warnings. Just thinking out loud. Great video, as always!
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 9 месяцев назад
Agreed that this is a good idea - I'll ask Garmin. The risk of normalizing is probably low because I am in SJUCH a different head space when flying aerobatics as opposed to normal operations though.

CHOP!!!! Don’t know if you remember me, but my name is Doug. I fly the Extra 300L and we met at OSH the past 2 years consecutively. Yo, I am glad to see you getting more into acro and diving into competitive acro!!! I will be heading out to Norway to fly acro and do youth outreach for a little while, but when I return, I hope to fly a few contest with you sometime. Take care, fly safe, and congratulations brother!!! 💪🏾

Steve, that is awesome. Love that episode. I'm totally excited for you. I recently did a series of akro lessons here in Florida. Need to find a plane to go practice in. If the FAA goes ahead with their proposed rule changes then a Pitts S2A is a possibility.

Watching this I'm wondering if I'll ever get into acro the way I originally intended. "Intense" is definitely the operative word. Love Aaron's mask... great vibe! When I heard "this Garmin's toast!" I laughed out loud. Sounded like your hammerhead count was slow; that's why you didn't reach four. I can't wait to talk OSH with you when we get a chance... maybe even in a few hours. Planning to fly in to Sarnia this morning for the COPA 7 show; hope to see you there!

Hey. You need to look on the wing for vertical downs as well. Looking down won’t assure veritical line ;) Also pull CB for that stall Warner, it’ll be less distracting, good luck.

To roll left with your left arm, turn your hand over on the stick (thumb pointed down). You use different muscles that way. As for control forces, can you fly slower with all that power you've got?
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 9 месяцев назад
I don't want to change hand positions mid figure, and no, I can't fly the sequence slower; I need the energy for the vertical lines - it is what it is in terms of the energy management.

I worry about those keys turning during those maneuvers. At times they are moving around pretty good. That would make for an exciting exit to a roll.
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, that'd be a bad day to loose the keys while inverted. Good news is they are in there really good and what you see flopping around is a super light fuel pump dongle and embroidered keychain.
