I have some health care in Thailand comments. This morning I had a kidney stone attack (not my first). I went to emergency room at a private hospital, spoke to an English speaking doctor, got pain meds, slept a couple of hours, and got some meds to take home. The out of pocket expenses, no insurance, was $52. In Bangkok I’ve made next day appointments myself for an oral surgeon and a dermatologist at a private hospital resulting in bills of about $100. I spent 3 days/2 nights in a private room in a private hospital for $550.

I just spent two weeks in Thailand from June 29 to July 14. I went to Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket and Karta. The MASSAGES are amazing, the food is cheap and so good and 90% of the hotels I stayed in were amazing. Bangkok is like NYC there’s crime. You didn’t mention the night life and the ‘ladyboys’ I encountered a brief episode of racism while I was here. Traveling single and a Black female my experience was a little different. I also find some areas of Thailand very polluted with plastic waste everywhere. I had an amazing two week stay in several locations.

I’m from Thailand and I am living in Portugal. Thailand has more to offer when it comes to entertainment, food, culture and economically. But I prefer to live in Portugal. The number one reason is the Safety the other reasons are; no traffic, no pollution, the weather is much much better, politically more stable, more peaceful and slower-paced. Of course I do love my country, but I would rather go there on vacation than living there.

I’ve lived in Thailand 7 1/2 years and agree with all the observations here. I do think, when choosing a place to live, that culture, local culture, is a big part of the decision. There is a vast difference in culture between the US/Europe and Thailand/SE Asia. If you are going to live somewhere long term it should feel like home or at least no be a daily struggle.

Hi Amon and Christina, Thank you for the awesome content and inspiration you provide! One of the challenges I’ve had a hard time finding a solution to for financial independence and moving abroad is the how to keep a US based stock market brokerage account without the brokerage closing or restricting the account if I’m no longer a US resident. I’ve read that this can be a common problem for investors who move abroad, but I’ve seen successful investors like you live abroad full time and maintain your US brokerage accounts. I’ve read a lot of financial articles about this and lots of comments on expat forums, but having a hard time figuring out how I can accomplish this. If you would consider making a video about how to overcome this challenge I would be so grateful! Thank you both for helping so many of us on our journeys!

I’ve had 2 friends move to Thailand. One passed away in a suspected murder while living in a wealthy neighborhood and the other was robbed/beaten in his first month. I would be very skeptical of what you hear about Thailand from ppl that are currently there. Thailand at face value seems amazing, but is built on a house of cards. The instability in that country is alarming but not obvious to the naked eye. Be careful.

True I was out there a couple years ago. Some Thai guys tried to beat me & my homie up. They were hating b/c we had some very attractive women in our section, but after they seen 2 guys weren’t scared of the 6 of them & was down for whatever they let it go but they were following us for a little while after we left the club but the chicks helped us lose them on the way back to the hotel. Other than that Thailand was a cool spot.

Nice video. But as someone who deals with the oppressive humidity for three months every year in Japan, I couldn't handle six months of the same in Thailand. Especially for women and minorities.

You studied at Thammasat University, one of the best universities in Thailand. You probably know the area. I recommend an area for living on Sai Mai Road, convenient travel, easy connection to City ( BTS Green Line ). The cost of living is cheaper than in the city. There is a large hospital. There is a night market called save one go. The food is diverse. And a fresh market called AC Saimai, consider it.

We are trying to answer that question at this time. Our kids are grown with their own lives. My husband retired last year and now we are thinking about spending time in South America and NYC. I enjoyed spending time outside of NY but I do miss home. The cost of living is pretty low in South America we can live on about 1500 to 2500 very lavishly. Going out to eat, buying groceries and keeping the housing expense.

Omg! I absolutely LOVE Thailand! I went there for a month for work (military) and loved it so much I had to go back and bring my mom with me 😂. It is a dream of mine to move there! How smooth/easy is it to immigrate there as an American?

I achieved FIRE and moved to Thailand from US this spring. I too debated between Portugal and Thailand and ended up choosing Thailand for many reasons. The biggest turn off about Portugal was a rising housing cost. I totally recommend Thailand for anyone in a heartbeat!

Thailand is just a vacation hot spot for me. I've been there twice ( Bangkok, Chang Mai and Chang Dao) and on the second time around I didn't enjoy much at all. The heat and humidity was way too much, combined with the horrendous traffic and pollution. Also we wanted to explore street food and some local restaurants and the hygiene was a bit concerned of mine after my husband got sick eating from one vendor on our first time around in Bangkok's Chinatown. The culture shock is something that one needs to take in consideration as well. Chang Dao was lovely though! Chiang Mai - we stayed in Downtown with a group of friends. I am sure that the quieter areas must be lovely.

Hi Amon and Christina! What a timely video. Though I currently live in South Korea, I've been thinking about making Thailand a 2nd (or maybe even a 1st) home. I went on my first scouting trip last December/January and I plan to visit again in a couple months. I love living in Asia and I'm feeling a very strong pull to Thailand. Who knows, we may meet again in Thailand some day 🙂

I hope you move to Thailand, as you're opening my eyes to all of the positives. I didn't know and would like a much deeper dive on: 1) Safety - it's hard to imagine in such a big, chaotic city, that there isn't a safety concern. How do you make sure you're safe against any harm whatsoever? 2) Neighborhoods and cost of living for $400/mo. housing. 3) Health Care and how to apply for it -- what's the premium, is there health insurance? 4) Visa -- if you're working remotely or NOT working 5) How easy is it to up and move from U.S. to Bangkok? 6) How do we meet other FIRE people and expats?

did the math, its better to rent in thailand. $100,000 in a T-Bill will yield over 5%, that is enough to pay for rent on a property that would cost you $100,000 to buy.

Travel to Funchal Madeira one time you will not regret, it’s part of portugal but subtropical weather in the capital , in the winter during day time its around 19-21 degree celcius in Funchal. On an island the size of Singapore you can actually find many different climate zones from mediterranen to subtropical to temperate and desert. Enjoying your show

The one big negative about Bangkok is the air pollution. The air quality is never great and can get pretty bad at some times of the year. This is the one thing that would make me hesitant about retiring in Bangkok

I spent a month in Thailand in 2017. Traveled to the different provinces and ‘land of smiles’ was true! Except the border agent when I first landed. 😂 The only complaint I had was the forang tax. My stepmother is Thai and I had to pay 10 - 20 Baht over the local price for attractions. We also talked to an ex-pat (USA) and the troubles he had trying to buy a house. That was in Chiang Rai. My other suggestion is to ditch the Pad Thai and try the other dishes! My go to was cashew chicken and it was different and flavorful in each province. It was truly a wonderful experience.

We visited Thailand last year in March. Everything you talked about is true and we loved the country, but...we were there at the pick of the smoky season and that was really bad...and so was in Vietnam. I haven't seen the air that bad anywhere else!

I always wonder if you compare the laws, the government systems, the day to day that you want and if that is where you want to be half the time. I personally don't want to limit myself. Maybe a year of slow travel to many places, you can test out many places.

There is the 10 year LTR visa introduced in 2022. I have the pensioner (over 50) LTR and money I bring into the country is not taxable. There are other categories of LTR. The working category has a tax cap of 17%. You have to have an income of $80,000/year to qualify for an LTR.

You should always carry a small towel to wipe the sweat. Thailand is not the place to walk around without sweating too much. Buy good morning towels. Theyre everywhere in Asia. If you want this lifestyle. Get out of BKK. I been to Thailand many times and have good Thai friends. Thai folks are friendly and very hospitable.
