Welcome back to another 3EB guitar cover. This week I covered what I would consider to be one of the hardest songs in Third Eye Blind’s catalog, “The Red Summer Sun” from their second studio album “Blue” (1999).
Written by both Stephan Jenkins and original lead guitarist Kevin Cadogan, this song is notable for being one of the heaviest songs on Blue as well as their whole discography. Cadogan goes crazy with his use of effects which include Wah, heavy distortion, Flanger, and much more.

Song has a post-hardcore vibe...wish they did more progressive stuff like this its unbelievable. (I'd guess this is a Cadogan song...) The last 2 minutes are beautiful on a different level...

Yeah I liked the direction they went on “Blue” even though it was such a tough album to make. Cadogan came up with some brilliant ideas for that record but ultimately his ownership was gone and his personal problems with the band (mostly SJ) escalated. I still respect his decision to leave even though I can only imagine what would have happened next.

Nice playing. I always loved the intro and outro of RSS. I often wished they wedged Anything in between instead of the Zeppelin-esque middle. I saw them in 2000 in NYC open their show with the RSS intro and then into Graduate. Epic show, beginning of the Fredianelli era.

Thanks! It’s a tough song to play but I had fun with it. I know a’lot of people are hard on Fredianelli but I love what he brought to 3eb. He’s just as good as Kevin and helped write some incredible tunes along the way.

@@BDKelso2000 I saw them twice with Fredianelli, and I agree, wrote some incredible guitar parts on Out of the Vein and Ursa Major. I totally dug his more “alt-metal” live approach on the legacy hits too. The way he did 1000 Julys and Wounded and Graduate totally rocked. Another great one that fell out with SJ.

Thanks! Yeah Cadogan being a student of Satriani brought a lot of greatness to early 3EB. Lots of sustainer action and cool solos we got from Kevin those years.

It’s an MJ Mirage specifically a GT Custom Model. Kevin Cadogan, original lead guitarist of 3eb used to play them a lot. The one I’m playing was his and the Red Hollow body Mirage I own was also his. I have a cream one also that I got a while back.

@@CarlosSoto-xe2we Yeah they are fantastic instruments but I must warn you they are very tough to find these days. Their owner Mark Johnson retired a couple of years ago and now the only way to find his instruments is through resale which doesn’t happen too often. There are 2 Mirages currently on reverb which are both custom standard models. I don’t think I’ve ever met a soul who has heard of them, so it’s very hard to find people that are interested I suppose. Thank you, you as well!
