This 5’11" Androgynous Beauty Is Nobody’s Doormat: Shannon Clagett

We asked model Shannon Clagett to be a part of the What's Underneath Project because, at 5’11”, Shannon creates an ideal of beauty that's not about eating disorders or airbrushing, but that's about being her true androgynous self. With no-holds-barred honesty, Shannon opens up about her struggles with a lost childhood, which included physical abuse by her father, emotional neglect by her mother, life-threatening drug use, and bulimia. Now, Shannon is positive and healthy. As she confidently declares, “If something in my life doesn't make me happy, then it's not there anymore.”

"Everyone was really hurting me...and it's like, where's the person that looks after me? 'Cause I look after everybody." This. Human. Being. I admire how forthcoming she is. I am so happy that she has her voice, which too often gets silenced or lost when a person has to go through so much at a young age.

It depends on if one is talking about androgynous style or androgynous gender identity. It's unfair to assume on that alone without knowing which they mean. There's a big difference between androgynous style and androgynous gender.

I had to stop watching this because it breaks my heart to see people hurt so deep inside. It's like watching someone dying from far and you can't reach them to help. Ohh Shannon, you are beautiful, physically you are beautiful too. You are intriguing, and it is that which sets you apart is what attract others to you. There are different layers to beauty and the world can be cruel. Hurt people hurt other people. You have to try so hard to protect your innocence. The purest parts inside of you that is not affected by the ugly parts of this world. You are loved, admired and beautiful to those you show your vulnerability and honesty to.

5'11" is 1.80 m, that's not weird. I find it questionable whether it should be mentioned in the title of the video.

Zulu Armand I'm 1,67 (about 5'5") and seen as small. It depends on where you live, though. 1,80 m (about 5"11) is average in my country. You'd have a perfectly common length here. I live in the Netherlands where the tallest people of the world are. What area did you mean by 'society or at least most places'?
@Lowriad
@Lowriad 8 лет назад
+Miriam Korver she was probably the tallest girl in her school. It's not freakishly tall or anything but it's pretty tall for a woman. Bearing in mind that models are over six feet tall so it's not a negative thing, just something that makes her stand out.

I am so proud to be living in a world, where despite the hard and the ugly and awful, there are people like you making videos like this, that are teaching people. Expanding people vibrationally, and giving them the tools to help love themselves on a deeper level. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and congratulations on such a successful project.

I watched it several times, this story is amazing, everything is about how you handle your past. She handled it greatly and now having the strength for telling her story is beyond admirable. I don't know if I have the strength of telling all my insecurities to a camera, and knowing there will be hundreds of anonymous viewers listening to it is kind of terrifying. But it has helped me so much, and I imagine that's why this project exists, to listen to another voice that says indirectly that you have to find your inner one. Great project, great people involved, love it

This hurts me to be honest. I honestly relate to her struggles so much. I've hated myself for so many years and I still struggle with my body image being a woman assigned male at birth and growing up living a lie and having my parents never noticing how much they'd hurt me with the smallest things down to the bigger things. I remember daydreaming and even dreaming about being a woman and being happy and I couldn't figure it out until I met people who understood and loved me for who I was as a person and not as a fictional person I pretended to be. I probably wrote shit ton of stuff here, but it feels nice to let it out.

I feel uneasy when I hear people talk about how thankful they are that their bodies "snapped back" it makes me feel like if your body didn't snap back or your hair didn't grow back that would be something to be ashamed of. I then wonder if this is my own insecurity towards the societal norm of having a small tight body or if it's truly something that should be addressed. We should all be allowed to be thankful for ourselves and our bodies. I just truly wonder how a woman, whose body didn't go back, feels when she hears comments like these. Lovely woman, lovely discussion.

It was heartwrenching to hear her story. It kind of hit home a bit and I found myself somewhat tearful a few times. It's a real son of a bitch when people abuse children, especially their own. Certainly when it comes from someone else, children can run to their parents. But when it IS the parents, then there's nowhere else to run. That's why drugs are often the common denominator in self-destruction of young people. They hurt b/c of the experiences they have with dysfunctional adults. I could go on about this but I'll just say that I'm glad she got through all of it alive and well with a budding modeling career to boot!!

Thank you so much, Shannon! You finally spoke out what I myself am not able to do. I will not say that I can totally understand what exactly happened to you and how that must have felt because I never experienced that. But I can relate to all you said about not feeling in the right place, about craving for acknowledgement as a person and your efforts and finally get to that point where you have to clean that mess up yourself... I`m still cleaning up and it`s hard and you feel like knocking yourself out sometimes because you were living these automatisms everyday and that`s hard to break. But thank you for the inspiration you gave me, even though this has been almost two years since this went online. But words never die they say so rock on!
