1JZE 2JZE 1MZ this was a time for great reliable engines. Regular oil change cam belt water pump and followers on schedule, OBD1 no VVTI.I cant think of an equivalent car that wouldn't have stuffed you with a massive bill by now, which would cost more than any gas mileage savings.

He bought it with 850k miles on it and took several years to reach the 1mil mark. However with a new trans, lots of adding oil for the last 100k miles and a ton of errors it still made it to 1mil and that’s damn impressive

Funny how both valve cover gaskets release oil simultaneously within 5,000 miles of a timing belt change? With that amount of oil they were bad for a longCoste. A new tie rod and alignment needed because torn boot. Bad lower ball joint on the front with 1/2" of play! Funny when a Lexus comes in for repairs there is no mention of costs.

If it starts acting funny and stalling, it's usually the ECU. Glove box has to come off and it's way under the dashboard, so R.I.P .to your back. The Lexus SC300/SC400 has the ECU on the passenger side footwell and very easy to get to.

My first car in 2014 was a 1990 ls400. One owner dealer maintained. Absolutely perfect for the age. The whole interior was redone. The paint was in great condition. Only pain is the rack and pinion on them. The original owner had it replaced 2x at the dealership and it went bad on me as well

They honestly will run forever if you take care of them those 90s ls 400s were the best cars in their segment still till this day I will take one over a bmw Audi or benz you don’t lease a Lexus u buy one because u can almost be certain u will have 100k miles of worry free driving

Small cars like the Corolla and the larger LS400 Lexus are excellent. Larger cars like the Buick Park Ave with the 3800 V6 go forever with little maintenance. The other ones that go forever is the Ford Panther Platform which includes the Crown Vic, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car. That 4.6L SOHC will stomp out 350k with basic maintenance all day long. Many Police Precincts are still using some Crown Vics because parts are cheap and they run til the cows come home. We will never see cars last like this anymore because they are transitioning to electric vehicles so manufacturers are not putting the care in that they once did.

Honda would be as good if their transmissions we're strong since they also have a great engine. Shit a Hyundai even hit a million with the same powertrain so goes to show they also have improved. I'd say another one is Japan made Mazdas. It's incredible how much improvement a few brands have made before it was only Toyota basically or honda

Debatable. I mean yes Lexus are amazing products from Toyota there is no arguing that. But reliability stats show Honda and Toyota base engines are less failure rated than Lexus or Acura. Actually only Toyota Honda and Lexus are even in the top 10 not even Acura so goes to show the luxury brand counterpart of a reliable brand isn't as reliable as the father/mother brand. Of course tho Lexus are super reliable tho just going with stats the top 4 engines for reliability engine wise are Honda, Toyota, Mercedes Benz and volvo

Sure.. a few of these old toyotas were gems, but a majority of the vehicles today are more reliable, have a better interior with more options, and cheaper to own than anything before in the late 90s or early 2000s.

My Lexus 1997 ES300 was one of the best cars I ever had (my first car, really) and it got totaled at the fault of a young driver in a T-bone collision. It drove better than most economy cars made today, the build quality was fantastic.

Like it already wasn’t slow to begin with, ever since Covid started it got super slow my mother constantly complaining about how she’s bot getting her bills on time (invoices) and she doesn’t do online bill pay or sees the online statements. She’s old school and prefers it that way for safety of her debit card and uses checks. But lately her Insurance/WiFi bill from the insurance company and cable company either don’t show or they do but weeks late past the due date and she’s pissed because she doesn’t want to randomly send out a check that might not be the right amount or without the envelope they send to use ( most places don’t anymore) but when it first started happening she was a mess because she didn’t know where to send the shit and calling the companies even the reps didn’t know shit they all want u to set up account online and pay that way and she won’t do it . Sad state we live in nowadays and honestly I think that the post office slowed down it service months ago and waited for the right time and policy change ( gotta do it for legal purposes) to “announce” a “set time” that mail would start “slowing down” when in reality it’s been slowed down from every carrier I’ve even heard people over nighting things and it taking 2-3 days to recovery. Now it’s been many moons since I’ve shipped anything but I remember when I did daily with eBay and such and I could overnight something normally OR overnight it with confirmed delivery by 9 am or noon ( noon was cheaper) and it was guaranteed BUT it was almost double the price then the standard overnight. I wonder if they don’t offer that “guaranteed “ by a certain time anymore because if they did these people that are depending on these overnight packages that need to be there would be selecting that option and not just the regular over night postage (I’m talking usps) don’t know if fedex ups Dhl or similar if they offer that type of service to begin with

I love those cars, the SC300/400, like many Lexus/Toyota products from that era, had timeless designs. The 2JZ engines, which were in the SC300 models, are still a marvel of engineering to this day for how overbuilt they were and the 1UZ in the SC400 models still feels vastly underappreciated for how great of an engine it was. I love Toyota.

@@neonreign2988 Loved that 2JZ-GE(no turbos) in my SC. With the 5 speed like mine had it was just as fast as the SC400 until you got past 70-80mph. Sounded great with the factory exhaust(put the windows down to hear it), but main thing was the smoothness, didn't know it was running at idle, same sort of smoothness as you revved it out to its 6000rpm redline.

In a city like nyc I don’t see it getting better then 14 mpg. I had a 17 and now 21 ES350 and I don’t get better 15-16 mpg.

Many people, especially in the US it seems, think they can buy those vehicles for cheap and then drive them to the ground without paying for scheduled maintenance. That's the reason most of these cars are gone. And then when the suspension is worn out for example people dont want to pay for a new setup in such an old car that is not worth much on the market, and the car goes to the junk yard instead. Until a point where the cars left start appreciating in value again and its suddenly worth putting a new suspension in.

I hate this "it is japanse therfore it is reliable" mindset. I had a Nissan Altima it ate through 2 CVTs and ended up costing me more money then I spent on it. I had a Subaru WRX and the ringlands blew and the head gaskets blew to. Meanwhile my Corvette has yet to break despite me driving it hard with over 150 thousand miles and my buick park avenue has over 200 thousand miles.

Here, in Long Beach, CA we seem to have the opposite problem on the supply chain. There are dozens of container ships anchored in the Port of Long Beach, with a 4 week delay for off loading their containers. There simply are not enough truck drivers to haul the containers off the docks.

2006 Avalon still drives like the first day I will be buried with that car LOL

My Mom had a 95 Avalon (same engine, though without VVT) and sold it at 330k. That engine still ran like new and was silky smooth. It only ever needed regular maintenance items and a VSV for the EGR system. Everything else on that engine was original. Treat it well and it'll happily take you to 500k. The car will rust away before a properly maintained 1MZ-FE gives out. I can only hope the 2GR-FE in my current Camry treats me that well.

Yeah Toyota is the best the huge advantage it has over Honda even tho Honda has arguably one of the best engines is the fact Toyota engines and transmissions basically last as long as each other. If it's not a manual for Honda you not going to see the transmission last like a Toyotas tranny does

I got a '97 T100 with 397k v6 5vz-fe engine.. it starts and runs like its still only has 100k miles. Bough that truck for $700 when the owner got tired of owning it..lol

@@eddiethetruhead $381 the price also varies on the condition of the board i.e. corrosion. It fixed the problem I was having with the car going to idle when mashing the gas. And yes I replaced the TPS with a Denso first no avail.

There's a high mileage model s that tesla use, mostly for testing. Has over 300k on it, needed two new batteries but motor and everything else is fine. Age is the bigger question though, many many cars can easily do 300k miles without missing a beat, but fall apart after 10 years.

People ask our EVs reliable. Yes and no. Yes it won't break as much as a regular car even a Toyota. Bit the problem is that it has a fixed life span. Lithium batteries degrade slightly every time they are recharged. You see this with phones and computers eventually the batteries will degrade and just not work. While with an Ice engine you can theoretically keep it running forever. I went to Greenfield village and they still have running model Ts.

@@highmm2696 The battery pack is the main cost in a Tesla at around $15,000 each. So the tesla was fine for 300k, just needed about $30,000 in batteries. Like saying my car has lasted 300k miles, only needed 2x new replacement engines in that time.

Not bad. From Jersey and NY too. I got a Prius and Tucson. For some reason on the Prius I never noticed the dam thing didn't even have a serpentine belt 😒 just had that checked cause I had it for 3-4 months and it didn't even overheat until now. I'm talking about the dam thing ran without a serpentine belt that whole time without blowing a head or something! Solidified that Toyotas are bulletproof and this is a 07. Not sure if it having a timing chain helped it go longer without the belt but I know for a fact it needs that for the car accessories. It's crazy cause I did check the front end a few times and seen a belt was missing but thought I was going crazy then a mechanic confirmed it for me.

And thats special somehow? I spent less on a 2003 Mondeo that I owned for the last 10 years. My dads skoda superb barelly costs anything to mantain too. Driving that avensis in this day and age... Basically suicide. Last gen avensis is quite awful (unstable, noisy, minimum safety requirements, harsh, inefficient,...), I cant imagine that rust cage of yours must feel by now.

Shifts smooth still with 120k miles on it, but that tranny issue looming is something I can’t live with anymore. For a FWD car it’s a pretty nice ride though, I’ll miss that Bose stereo system for sure. Had to go RWD with that sweet 1UZ instead. Now I’m Lex for life.

That's a good car you bought. The engine and transmission are bullet proof. I also bought a 2015 GS350 F-Sport, Atomic Silver with 10,300 miles in March 2021. It's my weekend car and I really enjoy driving it. Especially since my daily car is a 2010 Acura TSX with a 6 speed manual. I gotta say also the TSX with a 6 speed manual are also bullet proof. It has 130k on it and the check engine light has never come on.

Last year I got a 2012 Lexus RX350 with 48k. I feel like it will last forever... I do love the GS350 that was my first choice but I got a really good deal on the RX I could not pass up.

Maybe I should give Lexus a second chance I didn't have good luck with mine. Admittedly I did drive it hard and race it. But to be fair I do that to my Corvette and Mustang and tbeh hold up fine. Lexus people tend to be older so they don't push their cars as much. If I can find a cheap enough RCF I might get it.

I have an 2000 avalon with 280,000 miles. if you ever need repairs make sure to allways use OEM parts including brake pads and rotors.

That's because it was out of necessity and their space constraints that it works for them. However since the US is so vast, it was our mistake in thinking that this model would be a good idea. They modeled it for purposes of greed, not much else.

Use to run into these four Toyota mechanics over lunch at the local bbq. This was maybe two years ago. They were saying the quality was going down. I inquired about buying used. They recommended any models pre 2007. At that time I was inquiring about Toyota trucks.

Which newer Toyo's aren't as good that Toyota hasn't already fixed? Sure there was an oil consumption issue but it got solved...Toyota just builds bullet proof everything.. I bet the engineers say "okay guys lets make sure this thing runs till 300k until it needs some major engine repair"

Speaking of crypto trading, it's the best business in the world right now. Because I know a couple of friends who make a whole lot of money trading the financial market. NEVER LOSS?... I sincerely doubt when I see such things like 100% WIN strategy, Crypto trading is very technical, involves carefulness and great IQ... I wonder doing that with no losses or I will say only a professional trader/broker can do that.

Get him a Scion TC first generation if you can... Mine went over 200000 miles no problem. Oil changes, brakes and wheel bearings, and tires all it ever needed. Original clutch too.... Sat for over a year and sold it to some schmuck who crashed within a couple weeks

Toyota used to have a share of Tesla, but sold up and walked away. I suspect it was because Musk wasn't listening to Toyota about how to do quality, or production efficiency...

@@jmark7390 Well I suppose my point is that he had access to all of Toyota's expertise, and reportedly spurned it. It's an act of supreme confidence to assume that one can do it better than Toyota can, when they have consistently been the biggest and best car company in the world for decades. The launch of the 3 series showed that Musk could not in fact get anywhere near Toyota's effectiveness. Or Ford's. Or even Proton's. He has basically condemned the company to eventual failure because it's clear he's not got the mindset required to make money in a cut throat market. Nor has he the mindset to be able to successfully wipe out the market completely, even if he thinks that's what he's going to do. Toyota are moving towards EVs, at a sensible pace. Note that EVs are viable (barely) only in electricity-rich Western countries and there's another 5 billion customers who can't use them at present. Globally there's a huge amount of money to make from the ICE yet.

As a mechanic I agree . Do you only buy one shoe at the store if the left foot is wearing that shoe quicker? Buy both sides Same as shock absorbers. Get a pair.
