Timestamps (in progress): 0:00 Intro 0:33 Meagan virtually commentating Autumn Classic 1:19 early season debacle. Meagan advice/input, normality of early season performances. 2:35 Ted Barton (commentates JGP events for those who are new to skating or don’t know in general). He has been doing commentary at Russian nationals and Test events starting last year as well. 2:50 Canadian skaters-not competing much. 3:19 mentality going into the Olympic season. Meagans input, Worlds leading up to Olympics (2015 and 2016) 5:30 Meagan/Eric winning with old Muse program at Skate Canada beating Aliona and Bruno. 6:28 Eric/Vanessa (I didn’t like them lol, programs were dreadful honestly) analyzing the programs. Had a lot of buzz going into ACI. A lot of marketing behind them. Skating skills are not equivalent with each other, lines are but not SS. No chemistry between each other. Vacant music. Not very effective. Left at where this is going, I actually have to agree with Dave. I thought they skated meh to fair (being very generous). I don’t think they are a threat to Kirsten and Marinaro really. What is the motivation coming back? Flat no innovation 14:10 ACI Pairs Event 14:20 Japanese Team winning by a large margin at ACI. Momentum 19:56 More pairs 23:28 Deanna Stellato 25:32 Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc 27:29 Jessica and Brian 52:13 Trusova 53:45 Trusova mentality?

Has Trusova grown inches taller this year? Her improvement since last season is amazing! I compared her 2020 Russian Nationals vs 2021 Test Skate. Wow. She seems more powerful on stroking, much better in upper body, and her jumps look much higher in relation to the boards. I love that she’s always pushing the limits!

Meaghan just gives the best TSL intvs, just so smart, not coming from an emotional place, just stating facts how she sees things, is technical but not so much so that it alienates a novice fan from understanding what she is saying. Many fans confusing excitement watching 5 quads with artistry and performance quality. So when Sasha failed to deliver the 5 quads, the illusion of program and artistic improvements went away. Personally I prefer she goes with 3 consistent quads but with a cohesive program. Why does she need a 4F where her edge sometimes not clear? Or she can put 3A in the free as well so she can have more times to try and perfect it for the short as well.
@Essylte
@Essylte 3 года назад
She needs to go for 4Lz, 4F and 4T with one 2A and a 3Lz combo in the last half of her program. That would probably be all she needs to win.

The issue is that her consistency is not related to the number of her quads. She can nail a 5 quad program or flop on 2 or 3 quad program it's all in her head. Honestly I think they shouldn't change the program anymore since every time they change the program it's another one to practice

@Panda-lu9jy
@Panda-lu9jy 3 года назад
Choice is OBVIOUS. The gap between Alysa and the rest of US ladies is HUUUUGGGE by far. Sure, other ladies can improve in the next few months but so does Alysa. I have never seen a skater can improve as fast as Alysa in a short period of time. She skates like a complete different skater compared to last Nationals. Alysa still doesn't stop and she is still improving. She skates faster, more fluid and better in Lombardia compared to Cranberry cup .....which is only 2 weeks apart between these 2 competitions!! If Alysa continues her lightening improving speed, she may get her triple axel and even quad fully rotated by nationals. Hope Bradie can recover her injuries and put out great performance soon. Bradie was the best senior skater in the past 4 years. Amber is very powerful and hope she can show off her triple axel soon. On the other hand, both Mariah and Karen seems like skating slower and spins slower recently. Not sure they are regressing or just being nervous. Given that the rest of US ladies perform so poor by far, perhaps some other teenagers like Lindsay Thorngren may end up go to Olympics. Too bad, Isabeau Levito is not age eligible for Olympics season. 1. Alysa Liu, 219.24 (CS Lombardia Trophy) 2. Gabriella Izzo, 182.76 (US Classic) 3. Mariah Bell, 179.42 (Cranberry Cup) 4. Sierra Venetta, 177.40 (US Classic) 5. Audrey Shin, 174.73 (Cranberry Cup) 6. Karen Chen, 173.00 (Autumn Classic) 7. Paige Rydberg, 170.51 (Cranberry Cup) 8. Starr Andrews 155.25 (Autumn Classic) If Isabeau Levito is age eligible, she should be sent to Olympics, together with Lindsay Thorngren and Alysa Liu. Sorry, senior ladies (Except Bradie)....I just don't think they are compete and good enough.
@rica2269
@rica2269 3 года назад
i think an interesting way we can look at trusova’s problem w the triple axel is music wise, now bare with me. being a figure skater myself i can say that sometimes while we practice with the music we can’t get the jump timing correctly and we just feels like we’re falling for no reason, because without the music we always land them. looking at trusova’s trixel in competition compared to the ones she does in practices and warm ups it always feels like while she’s competing she’s dragging out the takeoff edge more than she normally does. it could be a mental thing but could it be that even if she practices so many programs everyday the problem is the music and the nerves all together? now it also could be that she’s just over rotating it cause she feels like she won’t land it fully rotated but who knows to be honest, i just hope she’ll finally land it in vegas so she can get the confidence to always land it in comps

I can’t understand why people keep repeating the same thing about Trusova every season, when the girl herself claims that her main goal is jumping 5 quads in a free program. This is too difficult and requires a lot of energy and time to prepare. She said she wanted to make her short program pretty all about skating and presentation which she nailed honestly, the short program is amazing, even with unsuccessful 3axel. But it is too hard to give the same attention to both presentation and 5 quads, and its still beginning of the season, the program needs and will grow for sure. Difficult layout has to beat the presentation side, even Kamila performing bolero on recent test skates was nowhere close to her rusnats2020 performance, because she was too focused on the difficult layout they gave her, and she looked like she just wants to go home as soon as possible.

Watching a few of the skates at ACI and US Intl Classic, I gotta say that Riku and Ryuichi did great! Not sure they can threaten the Russians or Sui/Han and Peng/Jin yet (and we haven't seen them at all, so who knows what they're doing), but they can really get into top 10 or even top 6 at the Grand Prix and Olympics if they keep this up. Japan should support pairs and ice-dance more. Trusova and the 3A do not mix; she should stick with the quads. She did excellent with the 4S; this was her best one. Surprised she fell on the 4F and doubled the 4T, though. I think she should stick with her best quads 4Lz, 4F (even if she gets a e or ! on it) and 4T (4S too inconsistent), combo one of them in the last half of the program, and she'd still win the Free over everyone. Yeonjeong Park was excellent - she showed that by going clean, you can still beat out the top skaters with 3As and/or quads. PCS matters as much as the TES, judges; attempting quads should not equal high PCS at all. You Young managed to at least hang on to 2 3As in her Free. The issue with her is quite simple: during 2020, South Korea shut down their ice rinks, and the poor skaters had no real place to actually practice and maintain and improve themselves. Other countries had the COVID restrictions in place, so getting to Japan (where her other coach, Hamada, is) or America was not going to happen. No access to ice rink or coaches - no progression in skating skills or jumps or anything else. So I was not surprised that she is not doing so great this season. Her practice regimen has been set back. It's going to be an uphill battle for her to even get the Korean skating fed to take her seriously to be on the Olympic team if she's not consistent. Very surprised with Smart/Diaz' Free dance. Zorro has not been used as much in programs. I really enjoyed this Zorro program of theirs. It's too bad that only one Spanish team can go to the Olympics, though. It will be interesting to see who gets to go to Beijing 2022.

It has become a pattern, every year a new girl makes her first senior debut, stuns us with her technique, ability to do crazy elements and then next year her body changes, it takes time to restore and adjust, but by the time they do, there are others… younger, fresher, better, not shuttered by the previous meltdowns… hungry for accomplishments. That's why many advocate for upping the senior age eligibility so that coaches do not force young prepuberscent skaters to jump quads with unsustainable technique. Now skaters like Alina or Zhenya would be demotivated because even if they try their hardest to get consistent again with their 3 jumps, they would not be able to compete with quads and trixels from 15 y.o. then the cruel cycle continues.

I love it when Meagan is a guest,,,,,and your thoughts, Dave? 😂 From my viewpoint, there were very very few special moments at either of these competitions. I was happy to see Cypress snag the Gold medal,,,what a confidence boost and she skated well! Gabby Daleman was a disaster and surprisingly Schumacher was as well. I enjoyed the American dance team, the Japanese SP in pairs and the SP from Conrad Orzel , but that was about it. Eric and Vanessa had no wow factor and of course the technical failures were obvious. There was a mistake in the timing. She had just skated in Russia, and she immediately went to the competition in the United States. Without regaining strength as needed. I agree that it felt like a virtual competition between Gilles/Poirier and Hubbell/Donohue. I think H/D have the stronger RD and G/P the stronger FD, which was reflected in the scores. Both teams funnily enough were 5 points behind their SBs from Worlds. H/Ds free music was AWFUL, that "ah ah ah ah ah" was really distracting, to the point I couldn't concentrate on the dance, which shouldn't be happening when you consider that H/D frankly have the best skating skills of the entire dance field and should really be winning based on that. There were mixed reactions to G/Ps free, and I think there are still tweaks to be made to it, but I think there's lot of potential for it to grow. It has a more classic "olympic ending build" than their previous programmes but I also felt captured the best of some of their previous FDs. Plus, I'm sentimental, but I really felt it has been a Long and Winding Road for them both, especially when you consider the journey Piper has been on with losing her Mother. I'm excited to see it develop - I felt similar to Both Sides Now at the beginning of the season and was in love with it by last Worlds. In regards to the RD as a choice - honestly, V/M's Prince programme completely owned the style, and lets be honest, none of these current ice dancers are tessa virtue!! Final shout out to Green and Parsons - I was in AWE of both of their programmes! If I was Hawayek and Baker I would be feeling seriously worried...

Classy commentary Meagan - great job. Vanessa / Eric Short Program I don't know who the judges thought they were judging - but they did NOT deserve any 8s on their PCS marks. I think they barely deserved low 7s, but even that's a push. The Japanese team were in a league entirely on their own, and were seriously under-marked in that regard. Free Program As Deadpool would say "it was an epic sh*t show" Right now, they're just a pair of almost-relevant has-beens trying to steal someone else's Olympic dream. They've had their turn, now isn't their time, and there are far better, younger pairs teams in Canada who have enormous potential, who are being denied coaching, funding and support. If they had any dignity, they'd just disappear and turn up for shows. But after this performance, I'm not sure anyone would be willing to pay to view James/Radford in a show. The music for both programs was dull, the only highlight being the throw on the cymbal crescendo (choreographed in the same way for each program). Where's the innovation? It was just, meh! I'm usually a good natured person who wishes everyone well, but something inside me wants to see this pair crash and burn, and retire with their reputation in tatters. You reap what you sow. Vanessa failed so many abuse victims with her silence, and Eric showed a shade that demonstrated his true self-serving nature. Its not a nice colour. The only person who had dignity or class in this was the commentator. What have we learned? That a Country will push and reward a team, even a bad one, with support, funding, and undeserved marks if they want to push them. And here was me thinking that IJS scoring was supposed to eliminate "preferential" treatment. Something didn't work there.
@nondescriptnyc
@nondescriptnyc 3 года назад
I totally concur with your analysis and sentiment, especially on the scores Vanessa/Eric were awarded! A string of 8.5s and 8.75s in PCS for that unfortunate SP-dramatically higher than what Riku/Ryuichi earned-tells me that the judges really wanted Vanessa/Eric to win. I also do not think Vanessa’s and Eric’s styles work well together, although they both have an elongated look with long limbs. The genuine fluidity and elegance with which Eric moves, to me, only accentuate Vanessa’s somewhat stiff presence on the ice, especially with her tendency to be less than careful with her posture-with rounded shoulders.

Dave, you haven’t seen Cruella yet?! It’s from the same director as I, Tonya and just as dark. You’d like it!

Personally I would recommend Trusova to do a double axel in the short and then kill it in the free.

Sports evolve. Baseball went from batting to pitching. Basketball went from big men to threes. Unless the skater's name is Yuna Kim some of you will never be satisfied no matter what.

A sport evolving does not mean people should incorporate poor technique with the wrong edges. It also doesn't mean you should prioritize jumps with little to no choreo. Figure skating is ballet on ice but still a sport.
