Here are a few Observations from fishing a private 3 acre spring fed pond in the Midwest stocked with minnows, bluegills and smallmouth bass: When there is an Alpha Bass (the largest) in the area, all other bass will hold off on striking WHEN the Alpha is in a feeding mood. Every fish is constantly “measuring” the weakness of the other fish. If you catch a fish and trim its tail fin, he will eventually have his whole rear fin chewed off disabling him and he will be eaten by his own species. Fish species “test” each other by swimming alongside with the dominant fish “bumping” the other. They do this all day long. Bluegill look to eat fry. Bass look to eat the Bluegill. Alphas eat the smaller bass. Break up a hotdog and toss it in the pond and you will see the whole cycle of Life happen in seconds! When you see bass following the bass you are landing, they are actually trying to determine if that “caught” bass is injured enough to eat. Over the years fishing this pond, the smallmouth bass have gone from jumping out of the water 2-3 times before being landed to just fighting with no jumping. Only the small (newer) bass may jump. You can train an Alpha bass to eat out of your hand. In the crystal clear water weeds grow high, the most effective bait, even after 20 years, is a 5” Senko Wacky Worm. Hoping you enjoyed some of what I have observed. Be well.

Excellent information. I have always noticed this about bass behavior. For example, if you cast a jig or shakey head worm to a dock. When I get a strike, usually, I might let the bass eat or take the bait for a couple seconds before setting the hook. Most of the time, the bass runs away carrying the bait from the shade and cover of the dock. Usually the bass runs towards deeper water. Why? Why would the bass leave the security and shade of a dock? I have watched my dogs in the house when you give them a dog treat. The dogs usually grab the treat and run to a remote quiet area of the house to eat and enjoy and “ not share” the treat. I think bass are the same way. The bass grab a lure and run from the school of bass to eat their capture in peace. How many times do you watch bass being chased by other bass trying to snatch a lure from their mouth. I think a bass running away from cover, where they struck a lure is a sign or signal to the angler that there are more bass in the area ready to eat.

Great point I have three bass in a 125 gallon there are no where big they are small I bought them as pets and to observe there behavior. This is absolutely true what your saying and comparing it to dogs. I've seen them go after another fish meal even to the point to bump them to spit it out so they can steal the meal it's very amazing watch and to see

Go get a degree in biology with a specialty in fisheries. Then go hunt for a job at any department of natural resources in any state and take the job when it's offered. Don't be picky. Then to get a Master's degree and start work on a Doctorate. That's when the fun starts because that's when you get paid to fish. Good luck.

Last week my son was tossing a live minnow drop shot and we could see bass around it , he caught 2 fish that day . I tossed a watermelon red flake neko senko and tube that day and landed 12 fish . I was blown away but my assumption was everyone is tossing minnow based baits for the last few months .

I can not find another bait that outpreforms a neko rigged senko. Watermelon or pumpkin with a chartreuse tail has been the hottest lately. I just use a screw too, nothing fancy. A good band and the right hook is a must.

I read the last 2 of those studies myself. It was very educational. That first study was already in my mind without hearing about it. A couple local private ponds had great fishing until people learned about them. Then the fish just quit biting artificial lures, yet minnows worked just fine. It was like there was no fish there at all until we used minnows.

42 years studying these creatures myself -what really helped me was having them in tanks in my home where I would study them behind tinted glass so they could not see or sense my presence. I was shocked what I learned -this allowed me to out fish everyone I know. I could literally train my pet bass like circus animals, most people don’t know bass have the ability to change colors like a chameleon in some ways, you just can’t understand these phenomenons unless you see it for yourself. I learned so much by spending time with these creatures in my house and in the wild. -sometimes less is so much more with these animals -they are very keyed in to the moon, tides, weather, air pressure, pH, temperature and so on…. They’re extremely predictable at times and at times extremely unpredictable. I would advise anyone who wants to learn more watch the Doug videos from the 1980s and put underwater cameras in your pond so you can watch them during spawn during this time they are extremely interesting and entertaining. Another interesting fact is how long they can go without food and just how much they can eat at one time 3/4s of their size😮 They remind me so much like an alligator or snake also they can hibernate and shut down for months .i’ve seen a lot of scientist and biologist in the waters I fish and it’s just crazy to think how much more more wisdom someone has with experience than booksmarts. This is something you learn as you get older -is that you can’t buy wisdom and sometimes a college degree makes you dumber just because you think you’re smart lol I think you what I mean. The reason I say this is I have been to college and the school hard knocks. Thanks for the video man. Keep learning and sharing this amazing amazing hobby we call fishing that’s medicine to our souls.😊

I love using procure trophy bass. I've had zero luck using a squarebill lipless crankbait top water spooks chatterbaits spoons. I've fished all these lures extensively, and I felt effectively and never caught a single fish on them. I had a ton of spoons, square bills chatterbait and lipless crankbaits. I ended up selling these lures and went back to basics. Using kvd splash jerkbait Berkeley choppo and crappie jigs. Also a 7 inch leader and a hook and bobber. A dropshot or a 7 inch leader with a hook and split shots. Also I used a 3/0 ewg super line with a 1/16 or 1/32 oz bullet weight. Also a football head jigs. This is all I use and catch tons of fish now. Early spring is tough but I'm learning to move more if no bites. Soft plastics I use grub worm finesse worms and smoky blue fluke. Also I use wakebait. This is all I use and do well. Now I need to learn where to look to locate bass early spring. I don't have a boat, and I won't use Sonar, so kinda limited.

I’m a fisheries technician, so I thought I would give you guys a little insider knowledge. There is currently an ongoing study at the underc research station in northern Wisconsin that is studying the effects of fishing pressure on bass. Preliminary results are showing that if a bass is caught, it is actually more likely to be caught again compared to the chances a fish not caught will be caught. Possibly genetic behavioral traits?
@BassFishingHQ

From what I understand there was a similar study done on vulnerability in bass. Basically you have bass that are more vulnerable than others to being caught and they found that it was a heritable trait

My favorite bass fishing lake is a semi private 350 acre lake. There is a good population of 3-4 pound bass in the lake. There are a dozen “excellent “ anglers who fish the lake. Nearly everyone practices catch and release. I find most of the bass from 2-4 pounds appear to have caught multiple times. There are hook marks on the bass lips and jaws. But most of the bigger bass over five pounds seem to have no wounds from being caught previously.

I can tell you from keeping fish, everything from fathead minnows I got at a bait shop (honestly those were my favorite!!!), tetras, to pufferfish: fish are fucking smart. Much smarter than people give them credit for. ESPECIALLY the puffers. I’ve noticed also that predator fish (like puffers and bettas and gouramis) are more intelligent on average. It makes complete sense that bass are very smart as well. Also, predator fish tend to be more territorial, so the fact that bass tend to not move much makes a lot of sense, probably to avoid fighting other bass or other fish. I feel like the one of the best ways to get better at fishing is to have a fish tank for a while, you’ll learn how they respond to other fish and what kinds of territory they like, I know it’s definitely helped me a lot.

@eugenebatiste
@eugenebatiste 3 месяца назад
These studies are stupid. They don't answer the SERIOUS question of WHY the bass are they and biting. The 1st study was blunt, bc okay they aren't biting the Lip-less and Worm as often, but are they still on the spot and why (my guess- food)? The 2nd study was the best by far bc we ALREADY know sea creatures have a keen sense of smell. Anyone who has gone fishing can smell that bait fish stink in the air. And again, if we can smell it a bass can. As far as bedding location. im sure the bass are wasing it to ensure that their have a adbundance of micro-organism to feed on, and aren't getting blown around by the elements. (So again- Food). The last study was the worst, bc WE KNOW know that a bass loses a lot of mobility to track and attack in open water as they get bigger. They predominantly become ambush predators. So sure he will stay shallow and capitalize on spawning gills and ambitious wildlife, while the other have the energy reserve to chase bait. But the motivation is always FOOD. Find the food, find the fish. Bugs, slugs, craws, and shad.
@dwayneelizondomountaindewh1465
No study can force me to fish differently :). If you guys keep changing, eventually you be doing exactly what the old timers would do. Bass fishing is easy, don't over complicate. It's your presentation, this is what you need. You need to refine 4-5 presentations for each species. You can be on the fish all day and not catch em. The Bass aren't going to move far, Muskie barely move at all. You catch one, chances are this is where the fish is every day for the last 12 years. I caught the same muskie twice in 2 days, same spot. Each spot holds some fish.
@dwayneelizondomountaindewh1465
Electronics can only make people worse fisherman now, not better. All you need is your senses to go fishing, fish finders are okay but nobody needs one. We did enough studies before, we're good. If you're not catching fish, it means the fish are onto you and they are not that hungry. You want to act like you belong out there, in nature. You can leave the computers at home man, bring the camera and the net. Also, putting a motor on your kayak just eliminated the whole silent thing you had, use the paddle and go deep into the shallow pockets, deploy the frog presentation. I use nothing on my kayak but a rod holder and a soft cooler, make sure your seat is nice and quiet, oh you're welcome. Some of these setups are too noisy to bring into the shallow pockets, by the time you get back there you scared all the fish away man. The stealth presentation is best, always. Nobody will fish these areas, it might as well be you. I don't fish deep water usually, unless its a strip mine, for salmon or walleye, something else besides bass fishing, 15 feet is considered deep abyss for bass. I am a multi species angler, not just a bass fisherman. I can catch panfish better than the pros sometimes, started when I was like 8 years old, so that's a survival skill. I can catch tiny fish, with my ultralight G loomis. So that helps you catch big bait for big bass, wild shiner are the best live bait. I am a fan of the Linder school of angling, go fish everywhere.
