As for my bicycle, that’s an Ibis Ripley AF there, and you can learn more about it at Jenson USA via my affiliate link here: bit.ly/IbisRipleyAF2022
If you all remember my big week-long motorcycle trip out to Idaho, and back to Washington, with the new Exie XC bike, well, this is how I got my crazy set up dialed in! I LOVE trips like these, and am excited to get another similar rig together for summer 2022!
I am using a 2x2 Cycles rack for the bicycle, which works great for most on-road applications. However, it’s not built for off road, and realistically, not many people are going to ride a “bike-on-a-bike” offroad. If you’d like to learn more about the 2x2 rack, here’s an affiliate link: bit.ly/2x2BikerackJKW
Now on to the motorcycle- that’s a 2014 Suzuki VSTROM 1000. I did look at some VSTROM 650 and Versys 650 models as well, but the combination of traction control and ABS, as well as high quality inverted forks and a good rear shock, had me sold on the ‘STROM 1000. The bike isn’t far off stock, though I did upgrade it with the following parts:
Answer ProTaper bars, CR High bend: bit.ly/ProTaperbarsJKW
Cycra ProGuard hand guards: bit.ly/CycraProGuardJKW
Rox oversize 1 ⅛” bar risers: bit.ly/RoxRisersJKW
Shinko 804/805 tires: bit.ly/Shinko804tiresJKW
Moose foam handguards: bit.ly/MooseFoamHandguards
Footpeg lowering kit from AdventureTech

Great video Jeff highlighting the pros/cons of moto/bike adventures! I’ve had a bike rack on my motos (XR650 and V-Strom) since 2008 and feel it’s the best way to explore the backcountry. I’d recommend you that you fab your own rack that uses a better bike mount (I’d recommend a roof bike tray). It makes the handling and the experience that much better on/off-road. Also, ditch the bungie cords and get yourself some Rok-Straps! Keep up the great videos!!!

Looks like a total gas! I love trails like that! I had no MTB options young, so we dirt biked. No suspension (comparatively) YZ400 off road and a DT400 for commuting and backroads adventure excursions. I always feel more at home on my Fezzari on these types of natural trails. The tight techy woods trails here are fun, (not my fav) and we don't have great terrain for anything downhill, but I had a blast on the Maah Daah Hey in North Dakota this year when we went to watch the race and play mechanic at a checkpoint. I like the sightlines. I'm 63 now, so more reaction time is good. Also not a real fan of just fitting the bars through two trees that were fine for the 26" bikes when the trail was built. A little more space to open it up is thumbs up!

I like the moto -mtb trips. I borrowed an 80s goldwing with a rack and went to a road race ages ago. Motos and mtb on the same trails can be great , more speed , better berms, better maintenance since the big bike can carry chainsaws. Im in Colorado. The forest is rapidly falling here due to beetles so i spend a lot of time with a hand saw attached to the bike. As for good off road motos , i currently have a new 690, i like the big suspension with decent road capability. I had an africa twin , which was awesome , excellent off road manners for 1000cc, i rode some hairy stuff and the honda was up to anything i could throw at it.great on the road. And the honda maintenance to ride time ratio cant be beat. Ktm is more finicky. I would definitely buy another AT, or a tenere 700. Cheers.

I have a 990 with a bike rack on. I haven't used it all that much. I hear you about riding the big distances on highway on Moto. Im not into that anymore. I also have a Van and prefer to take my Husky 450 on the back of Van with my mountain bike in side Van. I also recently bought a trailer to tow 990 behind Van. When my wife and I travel we now use the 990 to access remote trailheads for hiking since the Van isn't 4x4. Been some wild places like Jumbo Pass and Gimli Peak in BC. The ride out there on the KTM is a total blast and the scenery is mind blowing. Keep the Vids coming. Peace Out.

Right on B! There are a couple of 990s for sale locally here around $7500-$8000, it's tempting! I don't want to deal with trailering though, that takes more patience than I have available hahaha! I'l hafta Google Jumbo and Gimli!

Oh man I tried to snag a 'STROM 650 this fall as it was only $2k and was low miles. But someone else grabbed it before I got it... I sold the 1000 from this video and am currently down to only the DRZ400. The 2x2 rack is a great starting point- most folks don't hammer much off road wiht the bike-on-a-bike, and I haven't found a better turn key rack. I gave up on the hammock and had a good 2 dozen nights in my old tent this summer.

Nice adventure, yeah the vstrom is a bit much for off-road use. Good for cranking out the highway miles but not riding single track. Definitely the ktm 690 or 790, I am thinking the 500 excf myself. Much more like my mx bike, but hard to carry much gear. Always a tradeoff.
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 2 года назад
Total trade off! We have 3 hours of freeway just to get to the start of any kind of interesting riding, so I’m leaning toward 1090. A 990 might be better in the dirt and almost as good on the freeway, but there is aftermarket cruise control available for the 1090… and a 1090 will be 5 years newer than a 990.

@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 2 года назад
Hey Tomas, in general I would recommend the 2x2 set up. 100% for sure if you're doing mostly street miles. It's WAY better than a total home brew set up. The issues I had came from it being an older model that's not flat pedal compatible, and also, I don't think the 15x100mm size was helping. New ones are 15x110. I'm also guilty of going a little more full send than most do with a 600# (loaded) motorcycle.

Do you even need an adv/off road motorcycle for this sort of thing. Every motorcycle ive owned has been 100% road. I rode rougher gravel roads than shown here, including water crossings, on sportsbikes with mates (GSXRs, CBRs, R1s, Ducati 748, etc) a fair bit back in the 2000s to mid 2010s. It allowed us to take big short cuts and/or access isolated tarmac twisties. Admittedly this was without a mtb on the back, but aside from that we were often loaded up as much as you, doing week long trips.

Cool Video! Which bike are you riding? I don't recognize it. It must be an Ibis with the "DW Link" logo? My bad, just saw the Ripley AF logo!!...LOL. How do you like it compared to the Carbon version? I already see a few used for sale in my area. I been thinking of buying one as a backup.

Hey Norbert that is my Ripley AF! I wanted to get ready for the Exie and this was the closest to an XC bike that i own!

What a good experience Jeff kendall Weed. Give me the Ibis Ripley Af bike recommendations. I want to buy one. Come to my country Costa Rica whenever you want. To carry out these experiences.

Hey Erick, we had a great trip to Costa Rica back in 2018! Loved my Ripmo down there, as I enjoy the 160mm bikes quite a lot. The Ripley AF is also a great bike, I ride mine all the time! Here’s the vid from our trip: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aDzWpJGKG3I.html

What tyre pressures do you typically run on natural trails like this and what size tyre? thanks
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 2 года назад
On the Ibis or the Suzuki?! Hahaha! I'm using some WTB 2.6 tires, a Vigilante 2.6 Tough High Grip up front at ~22 psi, and a Trailboss 2.6 Tough Fast Rolling rear at 24 psi. I like these tires as they get the bottom bracket a little higher, and make the short travel bike feel as though it has a tad more.

@@JeffKendallWeed thanks, sounds like I run too high a pressure for my 2.6 rubber
@JeffKendallWeed

@@cleggycyclist Well it depends on what tires you have, your riding style, and the terrain. My tires are crazy heavy duty, like 1200+ gram, so they have a lot of support despite the low tires. Rim width also matters. So I wouldn't throw a blanket statement out there abut too high/low of a pressure.

Yeah that’s the snowy cascade mountains in late spring. Not much of the cascades is open to bikes but the littl we do have is incredible!
