Let's take a look at the Trouble Codes that the big BMW set during the DANGEROUS test drive when it STALLED going up the mountain.
What exactly should we test with the oscilloscope to pinpoint the INTERMITTENT problem on the next test drive?
Detailed research pays off, and we find an abnormal signal before even pulling the car out of the garage...

@PHD - That relay didn't look OEM. The vehicle doesn't seem to have any aftermarket gagetry, so why the aftermarket relay, complete with not-OEM wire-routing? If they change that relay, isn't that relay going bad a symptom, and not the cause? So what "feeds" that relay - signal and power? "But wait, it's a BMW" (here comes Ivan with a grin on his face with giant pin to pop my hypothesis)...These 🤬 cliffhangers!!!

Ivan: I own the BMW 760i. Its the (V 12) 6 Liter (N73) Engine. There are (10) pages alone just for the Engine Wiring Diagrams. There are (5) Engine Computers, & (3) Fuel Pumps. It also has the (IVM) Integrated Voltage Module. The Module sends power to all the Major Engine Components, and has the Starter Relay integrated in the (IVM) The car is made in Germany and is not sold at the Dealerships. The BMW dealers don't know how to diagnose the car because most of them have never seen the car before. As a Engineer, I actually have to teach the dealer how to diagnose the BMW 760i.

there is a common problem at BMW engines: one ignition coil at each bank got an additional ground cable, many mechanics forget to screw it on again at plug change or coil change or it is lose or got bad ground connection/corrosion That causes bad computers or bad relays Next bad thing are the connectors of this E70 ignition coils - you have secure this connectors exactly or they go in and out as they want to

Very curious on this. A terminal 15 error code in a BMW usually involves a input/power/ground telling the ecu to time out / stop power to a component. My guess is something electronic fails when hot. Only 1 minute in but ready for chapter 2 on this holiday special.

I was coming off of vacation a few weeks ago, and I stopped by a lab where one of my technicians was building an electronics package for an aircraft pod. He was slumped over the platform with both hands on his head having a moment of despair. I asked what's wrong. He said a particular box has a USB-C connection for power, and he was trying to feed it 5V but it wasn't coming on. He determined the 5V needed to be negotiated between the power supply and device. But all he had was a wall wart and no way to get 120VAC on the pod. I told him I would be right back. I went out to my truck to rip out one my 100W CoolGear USB-C PD power supplies that takes 9-28VDC in. Aircraft power is usually 28V. I've got a couple of them installed in my truck to power laptops and other high-draw electronics. A couple of days later he comes in with a Frankenstein power harness with resistors soldered to some of the pins. Turns out the USB-C PD spec allows you to add resistors of certain values to force the connection into a certain PD profile. He needed 1.5A @ 5V. He took both the Frankenstein harness and my little box to the ground integration test, but I haven't heard back about what the more permanent solution is. It would be fun to learn that a gadget from my F150 is powering a device on this pod that will be going into war. The airworthiness people would have a fit, though. But, like Red Green used to say, it's only temporary unless it works.

The car presented two VINs in the previous video if I remember right, so to me I'd start to suspect that someone had hacked in the wrong style engine computer into this car and actually got it running with a lot of workarounds. That's actually a bit amazing considering all the anti-theft measures today.
@Stoney3K
@Stoney3K 11 месяцев назад
The two VINs in the computer together with the fact that the CAS was messed with makes me suspect one thing: I'd double-check the title papers on that car. Might have been stolen, recovered by the police, and then sold at auction.

Could a module downstream that had been replaced with a junkyard module, registered to a different ECM, possibly return a VIN during the scan?
@lcocca
@lcocca 11 месяцев назад
The CAS is a normal problem on that era bmw, if you have terminal 15 problems it's the CAS about to die, the only solution is replace it
@tomvleeuwen
@tomvleeuwen 11 месяцев назад
The second VIN is actually in the FRM (lights module), not the engine ECU (the VIN is in there but not all info required to identify the car). Although the engine ECU is usually replaced together with the CAS and keys to avoid programming. I highly suspect that in this case the FRM was replaced or reprogrammed at one point since the FRM is one of the worst modules in terms of failure rate and the CAS VIN is the primary anyways.
@ehsnils
@ehsnils 11 месяцев назад
@@tomvleeuwen Makes sense to me, but still - is the VIN from the FRM or the engine ECU the "real" VIN. Just the VIN visible through the windscreen isn't enough, it could have been transferred and only the frame stamped VIN is the correct one. It's at least worth to investigate to make sure that there aren't any foul stuff going on, even though it probably is the FRM that's replaced and improperly reprogrammed (or maybe it's a 1-shot for the VIN.)

Another great holiday mystery, Ivan! Meanwhile, somewhere in Munich, BMW engineers and managers are laughing in their beer. Looks like the effort to cut the independent mechanics out is in full force. If you are struggling, imagine what the "not so brilliant" mechanics are up against. It also looks like another case of "somebody's been here before" and swapped incorrect parts and it is also possible that BMW has multiple versions of this vehicle with a variety of electronics options. But wait! This is a BMW! So you're going to find the 4-pin relay has the other configuration with terminals 30 and 86 transposed. Hmmm. So my conclusion is the relay isn't faulty (it's the wrong type), but the car has a strange 100mA battery drain if the big red wire is a t30. And why is the voltage low and collapsing under load? Because the ignition coils are effectively being powered from the relay driver in the CAS!!!
@tomvleeuwen
@tomvleeuwen 11 месяцев назад
If it is the wrong relay, with the wrong pinout, it might switch the control signal to the load and use the supply only to control the relay. This would also explain the parasitic draw and the DTC in the CAS.

But a lot of BMW and Mercedies from this era usually have an awkward power management system that can and will delay the charging system from activating for around 5 seconds or so after startup. The terminal 15_3 fault should not be related to the power management fault unless the relay would be closed when the car should be asleep. The power management closed circuit violation just means that the intelligent battery sensor on the negative terminal of the battery detects too much current draw during the resting phase of the car. Couldn't really see the power saving relay itself very well in the video but according to BMW ETK it should be a green relay, not a black one with a clip. A few of the older (non compatible) part numbers for this relay are black and have a metal clip attached to them. Wouldn't be surprised if they put some kind of wrong relay in.

That's pretty cool that BMW has a special code for a parasitic draw :)

biggest thing i noticed other than the relay issue was the mismatched VINs. a module has been replaced in the car and coded incorrectly as only the last 7 digits of the VIN were updated… i’d put my bets on a CAS & Key replacement at some point in its life

Something that strikes me as odd though is that a possibly bad mechanical connection on the load side of the relay shouldn't cause any dip on the control side of the relay (I would think). In each of the tests the control side continues to dip the same as the output so that makes me think there is something bigger going on than just the relay, even though the relay is suspicious and may or may not be a problem. My mind immediately goes to the CAS control as being the problem, but I have never seen a relay respond in a ramp fashion like that so it has to be a more common issue like a power or ground maybe? 🤷‍♂We shall see!

I'm only 5 minutes into this and I'm thinking about that other beamer with module replacement. previous tech didn't hook up ground cable and cooked the module. I think it was a dealership

My advice buy a OEM relais It might be a special one with a Diode or so.

Good point. But Diodes rectify AC voltage to DC voltage.

The N62 and N63 engines are not the most reliable. The plastic parts disintegrate as well as the connectors. I made that mistake with the F10 550..

Ivan, I died when I saw you going into part 3! Not really. :-) My guess is some of the CAN Buss system shielding is missing, or installed and should not be. (Maybe someone installed a section of CAN buss wiring that should not have been used in this particular CAN system.) Or, some of the CAN wiring is not a twisted pair. This would allow those stray pulses to be picked up by other wiring, rather than being "cancelled" in the twisted pair shielding. Or the twisted pair shielding is grounded on both ends, when only one end should be grounded - Or not grounded at all - ground loop? :-) Those pulses look like coil pulses to me. My hypothesis is that those weird pulses are being fed back to the car's basic battery power supply, and distributed to all of the modules in the CAN system. These pulses are super big and maybe, "the car's battery system" can't filter them out. Bad battery? Or some of the car's modules are not "tied together," as relates to a ground for them. I'm going with a grounding problem. :-) I love this diag Ivan. :-) Thanks. Come on part 3! Final thought: Why not leave a scope probe laying on top of the engine, with a small wire attached to the probe tip, to see if you can pick up any "stray" coil pulses? Just a thought.

I am half way through this video. A few vids back he worked on a car where the wiring was wrong because it was a frankensteined car. I believe he said this came from an auction. Thats where the problematic vehicles and frankensteins end up. Just a thought.
