I'm late to this convo, but I wanted to add that this is a drill used in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to develop the double-leg takedown (something BJJ has in common with wrestling).

From the 1st time I saw/heard the "warnings" about getting your knee beyond your toes (some time in the late 80s)...I saw it came from health club/gym based sources. My take that this was lawyers talking to protect club owners. I told whomever would listen that your body HAS this capability, so use it....smartly. Thanks Matt for confirming what I instinctively knew.

You got that right. My 18 year old wrestler son is freakishly strong at 140 pounds compared to what I thought I was strong as a 185 pound Marine. I made the mistake of focusing on weight training for size and lost much of my strength and muscle endurance.

I noticed you pulled a mat out for this exercise. Was it due to dropping to your knees (for padding) or was it a nod to your original wrestling book? But, more to the point, I wonder if the graphics on the mat - specifically the stripes in the center - are there for guides in the exercise. It looked like your back foot was aligned between the two stripes, and that their length was your step (lunge length). Is this the case, and do you have any specifications for home use?

I wouldn’t recommend banging your knees on a hard surface to do this exercise. I don’t use the stripes to gauge anything. I simply do the exercise as it is intended to be done.

Coach just a question about knees and wrestling They say when knees go over toes constantly it causes shearing of the joint. And also by constantly hitting the knee on the ground when shooting must not be good for longevity! is there any way to avoid knee damage or does it just come with the sport Thanks coach!
