Chrollo is a tragic case of a man who lost himself. Even his nen ability reflects that. He doesn't have a specific ability cause he does not have an identity. The mask of vengeance that he wore for so long morphed into his soul and became one with him.

Right after Gon asks him how he can kill people who have nothing to do with him, Chrollo thinks "Could that be the key to understanding myself?" It's my favorite moment from the series. Beautiful voice acting in the 2011 anime as well. He's such a fascinating character.

It’s pretty simple; Chrollo became the very thing he hated. Somewhere in his quest to avenge Sarasa’s death, he ended up turning into the same type of people that murdered her.. probably even worse. I think that’s why that panel of his reaction to Gon’s question is so important, because it’s probably the first time in a LOOOONG time that someone made him see how much of a hypocrite he’s become.

Chrollo is what kurapika would have been without gon and killua. Pakunoda's sacrifice become Clear after togashi releases Chrollo's back story. remember her last memory in which Killua and Gon explain why they do not want to escape. they clearly stated "because we do not want kurapika to kill anyone" and that statement had pakuna thinking.. "Am I a bad friend to Chrollo?" you see... gon and killua is a complete opposite of what they are back when Chrollo was devastated by the death of sarasa. only shiela doesn't want their plan of revenge. while all of them support Chrollo's plan to avenge sarasa. along the way it's not just about revenge, they want to destroy the world, the system, the society itself. that explains why nobunaga once said (while hunting the heily family) "We are just like them back then we just wanted to destroy the world". and the realization of such is thanks to Pakunoda ability to transfer her memory to them. they realize what pakunoda realize. they are a bad friend to Chollo for pushing him to be vengeful person. this is why Phinks has that face back then when they meet gon and killua on the greed island arc. and thank them both for what they did.

Liam isn't always right in his analysis, but this man is single handedly keeping HxH alive on RU-vid. I'm a diehard fan of HxH too. If I had a channel I'd be doing the same thing. But this man is dedicated, and I love it!

My theory is that in those three years Chrollo may have went through another traumatic experience similar to what gon did which is probably how he gained access to specialization later in life. My reason for thinking this is because gon asks Chrollo “how can you kill people that have nothing to do with you ?” Yet later in the series he threatens to kill komugi who was in a similar position

That last lane of though was brilliant: “Hisoka wanted to make Chrollo feel something when kill again”. Now he is obsessed with Hisoka because he is targeting his connection with human emotions, with his childhood, with the companions of his journey. Excellent, love it. Thanks for your content!

Imagine Chrollo , Hisoka , Pariston and Tserriednich all in one room I might die from excitement the day that chapter drops

I find it impressive how heavy-hearted was Chrollo. He basically became The FBI's #1 Most Wanted, just because he wanted to avenge his best friend. There is no amount of guilt that could forgive becoming a monster on the same level as those who killed his younger self. I hope that Kurta Kurapika doesn't go down the same road, being a monster in his own right.

I wonder if the Troupe's motivation for the Kurta massacre is similar to Kurapika's motivation for being involved in the underworld. As you said, the people that would be interested in what happened to Sarasa may have overlap with the people that would be interested in Kurta eyes. It could be that they used the eyes to find the people responsible for Sarasa.

12:39 I think to anyone else Chrollo might have said something different but I think the “innocence” in Gon’s eyes (that same purity and raw youthfulness that caught Killua’s Bisky’s and even Zepile’s eye) made him realize Gon wasn’t just judgemental but *actually curious* as well. He’s used to scorn from hypocrites, he’s used to other killers assuming they “know” him (like assassin A), fear and probably even concern from his friends who despite their closeness, might misunderstand his intentions or feelings *because* they have a little information but never bothered to ask. Gon asked. He asked because he wanted to know. He asked with the innocence of ‘Cindy Lou Who’, as one who couldn’t understand why someone would do such a thing, knows it, yet asks all the same BECAUSE they WANT to understand. It happens so fast. Gons slightly judgemental yet curiously questioning eyes. Chrollos knee jerk reaction face. Gons reaction to that like “did I say something? I should be on guard He seems triggered for some reason”. Chrollo recognizing he TOO made assumptions. “What compelled him to say that? He wasn’t TRYING to get a rise out of me to appear ‘tough’ or as a front for how scared he SHOULD be… he’s either a complete idiot (which we know he isn’t), less crafty than he thought (if he had a plan he just gave up his tell that he’s not scared) or is curious *despite* being caught in a spiders web? I think it might ACTUALLY be the latter… how rare.” Then the scene plays out as it did. He raises the point about him being uppity for a hostage BUT he then treats him like a child that had just asked their parent “Dad, what does ‘Fuck’ mean?”. Honestly, without over emphasizing it, so it doesn’t stand out in their mind; in the hopes that they won’t learn about it until they’re much MUCH older… All THAT in expressed in just 5 panels… togashi sensei is a genius!

It’s a cool rabbit whole to go down to imagine Pakunoda’s nen developing to be memory reading because of her desire to find out what Chrollo read in that note. I imagine a moment where she touches him and is shocked by finding out what burden Chrollo has borne for so long.

Two things: First the biggest misunderstanding of the HxH comunity. Hisoka's not a clown is a magician. Chrollo is the best example of "If you look at the abyss the abyss long enough the abyss stares back".

It’s interesting how, in the Yorknew arc, it seemed as though the Phantom Troupe had been around for ages, with their rules for recruiting new members and seeming detachment from each other, plus the mention of “founding members” as though the roster had shifted substantially, but in reality, they’d only been active for two or three decades at most, Uvogin’s death was the first time a founding member had left the troupe, and the only changes in memberships were in the apparently later added positions of Shizuku, Bonolenov, Kortopi, and Hisoka.

Before those chapters we got early this year I thought Chrollo was a really good character but now with the backstory and horrific flashback he's great for sure plus RIP poor Sarasa not to mention Tserri was involved I'm sure somehow

ok, weird thought here (and it probably will sound dumb as hell): what if the Troupe massacred the Kurta clan and sold their eyes SPECIFICALLY to find the most devious and f-ed up individuals that would BUY said eyes? I just got this epiphany that, while doing the massacre thing was literally an overkill, it was also the easiest and safest way to spot the most corrupt and heinous people that would, otherwise, cover their tracks because i doubt anyone would bring up their "collection" while talking to random people and would only brag about it with other "enthusiasts". Because look at who was targeted by the troupe: people that BOUGHT those eyes. In the end the Troupe became the embodiment of the phrase "going duck hunting with a bazooka"

The Phantom Troupe was an an amateur 'troupe' performing only for their people while Hisoka was a professional circus troupe, a one-member troupe. It make sense that Hisoka will be the end the career of the Phantom Troupe and by the end Chrollo will also become just a one-member troupe and Hisoka will probably get his fill as Chrollo's story seems to be ending (also since Kurapika already moved on from killing the troupe members and is now more focused on recovering his clan's remains).

wait what if the reason the Kurta clan were so brutally murdered was because the criminals who killed Sarasa were from that clan?

I think Tserriednich definitely had a hand in Sarada's murder. The fact that we've been seeing so much of him and learning about how horrible he is, and then right after that we start seeing a lot more of the phantom troupe and finally see part of their backstory seems like a pretty good setup for him to be their guy to me. Especially with how powerful Tserriednich is becoming. I feel like for the Troupe to finally get revenge this late in the story it would have to be someone powerful enough to take on a good portion of the troupe. And it seems like all this mafia business could lead them to the upper floors, where they will learn about the state of the remaining princes and possibly be warned of Tserriednichs heinous personality. Maybe that will be a sign to look into him for any info on Sarada's killer, confirming it, and the entire troupe tries to kill him.

I disagree, Chrollo can be summeries "Traumatize child looking for excuses to kill". He is this whatever you like it or not. Because if he truly was just looking for the killers of his dear friend, by this point, he could have found then and be done with the Phantom Troupe, but he doesn't, he doesn't uses his position as the top to find the killers Sarasa and be done. So by this point, why does the Phantom Troupe exist? Because they like to kill and just want to keep killing, they could still be a family if they were done and just focus on being the guardians of Meteor City, but they don't. Because they are just killers now, whatever innocence, whatever the reason, it has been truly forgotten in a emotional core, they are just killers and thieves.

In an alterative universe, I could see Chrollo becoming the world's greatest nin hunter detective. Solving crimes, hunting murderers, and having support via the phantom troupe with their various abilities. But he chose to become a crinimal and now he is so dissociated from reality that he is a lost cause. Although I could see Gon as being the one to help him realize what he became and even find a way to absolve all the killings he's committed, at least the innocent ones.

The only thing that I can think of is that perhaps after the revenge on Sarasa's killer, he sort of adopted a larger version of that plan to amass so much power, wealth and criminal infamy so he could eventually take down all criminal empires. But it was a large sort of ephemeral goal with no real logical "end point" where it was done and action should be taken. Thus maybe he could always justify every step along the way getting more jenny, more power and influence, committing one more atrocity, because it was never quite a perfect amount or exactly the right time to exact the plan that in his mind justifies all these terrible deeds, so he just kept going and going, eventually becoming a truly lost person. He now probably rarely thinks about it, only perhaps loosely abstractly if he needs to self justify, but probably knowing deep down that its too late and he will never actually do it.

chorllo has always been my favorite character not just of hunter x hunter but out of all the animes i watched he was just so compiling from the jump.

I want to remind you the belief of Chrollo that was said on Heaven's Arena that humans are like puppets anc they can't control themselves, no free will. Chrollo believes in fate, a predetermined path: there is no free will so he can't feel empathy.

As other commenters have mentioned, I'm also very interested in how Kurapika might end up going down the same road and how it all becomes a cycle over and over.

Kurapika is similar, however, he shall show Chrollo that he was wrong all along, and there are better ways to go with your revenge. Right before killing him as the last Phantom Troupe member, prompting immense anger from Hisoka.

Something I’d like explained is the Troupe’s numbering system. When it was founded, there were nine members, Chrollo as the head and the others as the legs. You know, like how a real spider has eight legs, not 12? If Chrollo is 0, the other founding members should be 1-8, but Uvogin was number 11, either Shalnark or Pakunoda were number 9, and non-founding members have the numbers 4 and 8. How did that happen?

Could it be that they attacked the kurta clan as a sort of bait to draw out body collectors... the more rage the kurta clan see the more red it becomes which is coveted by the body collectors... in luring these body collector they could potential lure out the killers of sarasa

My take is that his vengeance is no longer limited to the people who hurt his friends. He blamed the world for what happened, and is taking vengeance upon the world.

I think comparing someone like Gyro, a person who's misanthropy and malice was so strong that he overcame his biological programming after being reincarnated as an Ant, to Chrollo would be an interesting video idea. They're both individuals who are natural born leaders with charisma and drive, but who lost their innocence during their most formative years and became monsters because of it.

During the fight with the Zoldycks, Chrollo didn't have the intention to kill them but to steal their abilities so I believe if he wanted to the fight could've gone very differently

Well actually, Wing told Gon, Killua and Zushi that you need your own kind of hatsu, because if you copy others' ability, you will never reach your own potential. And I link that statement as a jab to Chrolo. While an extremely skilled nen-user and fighter, I think he naratively needs to find his own personality and with that his own hatsu.

Perhaps the men that killed his childhood friend were Kurta which lead to the massacre and the torture

I'm a bit of an anime snob. I'm a fan of obscure dark shows, not so much of mainstream shonen. But HxH is the exception. The world building, story, and most importantly the character development is so compelling. Can't wait for the return of the series!

Call this a fan theory if you like but I belive the killers of Chrollo's childhood friend is still alive, and the person who would of done it is our very own favorite princes who likes making... art. Reason behind this is same reason I feel gyro is going be making a apperance soon, is the author of HxH has never dropped info on us about a subject about certain characters that hasn't been important later on in the story. I just feel the whole deal with her death just being glossed over after he formed the spiders is just confirming her never did find the killers cause I think if he killed them he would done worse to them why else would he have made a snuff film safe haven he was wanting to top all them in one go of it so none dared doing this sort of thing ever again

You should do a series like the one you did with gon that is solely focused on developing character nen abilities if they were in different nen categories.

ThEORY. The crazy prince that hates women somehow had something to do with the sarasa murder recording. Kurapika wants the scarlet eyes, which he has the remainder of. Kurapika also wants to kill the spiders. The spiders want to kill Kurapika. The spiders want to kill the prince over the murder tape. To really spice it up, throw in hisoka who wants and has been killing the spiders, has worked with kurapika in the past, and would want to fight the prince due to his strength. If this happens, it makes both the spiders and kurapika understand each other by there tragedies being a vice-versa situation on each other. Side theory the girl that left the spiders at that young age is a calamity which could work with the kurapika is from the dark continent theory.

What if Sarassa's murderers where Kurta clan members.??? Crazy ik but it would be the most relatively redemptive explanation for the massacre.
