Jack joins Caterham CEO Bob Laishley for a first look at the company's new concept, codenamed Project V. With a remarkably low weight figure true to Caterham's DNA, coupled with ample power and range, could this be our first glimpse at the finest electric driver's car to date, and the cure to sterile, overweight performance EVs?

I haven't been for a few years but I have been an amateur car designer for the past few decades. This design is probably THE best design I have ever seen since I put my pencil down. (although the tail lights need to be reworked, two lights either end with the inner been round the outer semi round on the inside and following the outer panel contour on the outside, the rear panel needs slight alterations, embossed framing creaes/line). I hope this mıodel get's realized, please tell Mr. Bob Laishley, thank you. : )

This is where EVs should be going, light and simple. If there is a 'green' claim to EVs then simplicity is essential. The Caterham looks amazing, they deserve a winner here.
@AZzalor6632
@AZzalor6632 9 месяцев назад
Totally agree and imo that's the biggest issue with EVs right now. You see all those big bulky SUVs like the iX and for them to get a decent range, they have to have a huge battery that makes them insanely heavy. Cars like that go fully against the sustainability and "green" factor that EVs should have and at that point are no better than an ICE car. EVs should be lighter, smaller and simple to preserve resources and not need those huge batteries. Good aerodynamic is also important, so SUVs shouldn't even be built as they have shit aero.

Lotus says the ev emira replacement coming in 2025 or 26 will be within 100# of the emira weight. Porsche says the cayman/boxter ground up ev due in mid 2025 will be within 100kg or less of the current ice 718s. The Xiaomi sc01 ev is a 2dr 430hp awd ground up sports coupe coming later this year in china. Starting at 41k with a 2,900# curb weight and 300 miles of range albeit on the stupid cltc range test. But still mid 200s wltp or epa. Light quick and cheap. 😎 And this is just a lotus/tesla gen1 roadster do over 17 years later with less range less power and still slow charging albeit a bit cheaper. 😀 I want caterham to build it in mass, but with at least 330hp(call tesla up and ask to buy a few thousand plaid cf motors or lucid? I'm sure they exist but they're engineers. The catch is that the managers, execs (and stock holders!), and accountants have the biggest say. Engineers want stuff to work well and pay for itself. The latter group want things to produce more, more, and more profit for more, more, and more time... so they add stuff for that end under the guise of "features" and being for the customer.
@shakeelali20

@@Kimoto504 You're 100% right. Unfortunately the bean counters are often the ones who win out when it comes to building anything fun. When you hear a bloke like Bob referencing Colin Chapman, and talking about his passion project, it makes me happy to know that the future isn't all bland fwd SUV ev's with 10sec 0-100 times. They've put their (admittedly limited) budget to spectacular use getting an EV under 1200kg let alone a low slung, 3 seat sports car. That's less weight than a modern Toyota 86 or MX5 in some specs and it's going to have bucket loads more power and torque.

@@DescartesRenegade Tesla is a good example. They have developed a more power dense battery, this is true. But there is still a lot of uncertainty weight in their cars. They perceive that people want high horsepower cars with all wheel drive and vast amounts of luxury. And to a lot of people, this is true. But for a driving enthusiast, there is no point in having massive acceleration if the car is too heavy to stop quickly, or is sluggish to respond in corners. Lose the extra motor. Cut out most of the creature comforts. Now you reduce weight. Now you can use a smaller battery for similar performance. Now you can use smaller, lighter wheels and tires. Now you don't need so much power. Now you can use an even lighter battery. Etc. It is the quest for the most power, for a family car to complete in a drag race with super cars, that is the biggest mistake. But it is what got electrics noticed by the public. It is just so unnecessary.

Another REALLY big advantage of using gear that is already available is that it will make it MUCH cheaper to homologate. And although Caterham is a tiny company, no company can survive only on a very small market. They need to be able to export. Currently they have 2 or maybe 3 models which they can sell in the EU.This would be a fine addition.
@kooooons

I really like the idea and it's weird nobody did it already but IMHO they should have gone for for an even smaller battery. For a sunday sprint, I feel 100 mi of range would still be enough. So as a suggestion: have the 55 kWh battery be an upgrade option and go for a smaller base battery. PS: for reference i'd like to add that my daily driver since 5 years has around 180 mi of range. This has 250. There have been times when i thought: "that battery I don't use did cost me a lot of money". Won't be long until caterham owners think: "that battery I don't use really weighs a lot"

I did a track day in a Caterham about 18 years ago. Before and since, it's been dream car of mine. But, with climate change, and the move to EVs, I'd put the idea of owning one on the shelf. Over the past year, after watching many EV conversion videos, I was pondering the possibility of converting a Seven to electric. Wow. Caterham is doing it themselves, and I couldn't be more excited! The coupe is absolutely beautiful and the EV 7 has (less than) a ton of promise!

The car looks great. Something a bit different in the EV world. Thumbs up from me :) Well IMO they should have ditched the rear seat. No one is going to sit there anyway. And have the batterys right behind the driver for the best balance / weight distribution.

Ahh, but what if you get rid of the passenger front seat, put the driver in the middle, then have two passengers in the back bench? Saves the weight of the passenger seat, makes the rear seats viable in the fact that either side has more leg room and makes it more fun for the driver and more convenient because you can get in and out from either side.

Interesting. You’re saying that out of the 100+ EV’s that have debuted these past 15 years, you didn’t find anything you didn’t consider awful looking? Regarding this car, it’s not an instant masterpiece of beauty in my opinion, but not awful in any way from my perspective either. May I ask, are there any current or upcoming EV’s other than this one that you liked appearance-wise? Lotus? Porsche? Tesla? DeLorean? I understand that not all designs appeal to everyone, but surely they can’t *all* be that hard on the eyes.

That Caterham looks stunning, I want one, especially as it hasn't gone berserk with the power output and battery size. What's great is that when solid state batteries are affordable this is coming at EV performance from the right angle for me (lighter weight and driver enjoyment) and should only get better. At least in the UK you can't really enjoy 1000bhp Plaids, as impressive as they are.

The transparency is very confidence inspiring. I think most people who want to take a sports car out for a blast will happily stick a bag in the passenger footwell or otherwise there looks like a very reasonable amount of space behind the seats anyway.
