DO NOT ADJUST YOUR SCREEN - THIS FOOTAGE HAS NOT BEEN SPED UP! In this episode, Henry Catchpole has his face rearranged and neck muscles severely tested by the incredible McMurtry Spéirling, which is capable of cornering faster than an F1 car. Forget conventional hypercars like the Aston Martin Valkyrie or Mercedes AMG One, this little fan car is in a different league in terms of its performance. It can pull up to 3G laterally, even in tight bends, and will accelerate from 0-60mph in just 1.3 seconds.
(Did you make it this far? Support the creation of more of these amazing videos! Join Hagerty Drivers Club today and enjoy a 60-day free trial! bit.ly/Join-HDC-Henry)
We drove it at the fantastic MIRA test facility in the UK, which allowed Henry to really push the car to its extraordinary limits - even beyond them. What’s it like to spin a car with constant downforce in all directions? You’ll have to watch to find out.
The British designed and built McMurtry is tiny, measuring just 11ft long and 5ft wide. It has a carbon fibre monocoque, weighs about 1000kg, has a 60kWh battery and sends up to 1000bhp to the rear wheels alone. That sort of power going to just one set of tyres should be a recipe for wheel spin as soon as you breathe on the throttle, but not with the McMurtry. Two electric fans (it has two to provide a level of redundancy, like an aircraft) spin at up to 23,000rpm and combine with a sophisticated skirt system to provide up to 2000kg of downforce.
And just in case you think this is some sort of crazy one-off project car that will never see the real world, McMurtry’s Managing Director, Tom Yates, revealed to Hagerty that a customer version called the Spéirling Pure is currently being developed. Even more staggeringly, the Pure will actually have more performance. Yes, more. The mind boggles.
The price of the McMurtry Spéirling Pure will be £820,000 plus taxes, which sadly puts it firmly out of reach for most. But, given the technology and performance on offer, the asking price doesn’t seem outrageous when compared with other hypercars.
We hope you enjoy the episode and feel suitably wowed by the footage. If you enjoy it, please consider telling others about it - spread the word! Sharing is not only caring, it really does help us to keep making videos like this.

@@3rdcoastpapi Pretty much, it seems mindbogglingly fast and I think Henry's mind was genuinely blown, but like most EV sports cars after a while it will just feel souless (I daily an EV, it's not slow). Sports cars need an ICE and mechanical stick shift, the reason my trackday car will always be a stick shift ICE, there is an intangible connection and reward system at play there. Like as fast as this is I would still take a V12 stick shift GMA T.50 instead.

Well, I've just about recovered enough to be able to type this! Thank you for all the great comments - it's hugely appreciated that you take the time to be so considered and supportive. One point that I've seen a few of you mention is the idea of a race series, which is certainly an exciting thought - with the downforce generated in this way, you could have cars following absolutely nose to tail with no loss in performance, which would be brilliant. G-suits might be necessary for the drivers though! Anyway, thank you again and please do share the film with others if you think they might enjoy it - spreading the word really helps us. HC

@maxtorque2277
@maxtorque2277 11 месяцев назад
"brilliant"? er nope it would be rubbish because cars with ultra high DF to mass ratios make for dull racing because the tyres and drivers have to operate in such a narrow window of slip. And just like in F1, any contact that destroys the DF (kerbs, lumps, bumps and even being nudged by another car) means an enourmous hgih speed crash because suddenly you are going 3 times too fast (for the pure mech grip). The racing line becomes everything and any other geometrically longer path can now never be faster. Probably the best racing i've ever watched is the Goodwood classics where things like Mini's and Ford Galaxys run door to door, sliding from entry to exit,a ll with more power than grip and the lead changes 5 times a lap. lets not make all racing the snooze fest that is modern F1 please..........

I absolutely love the latest batch of hypercars like the AM Valkyrie, AMG One, and GMA T.50, but while we were all busy watching those cars develop, McMurtry went and created the next generation equivalent of the McLaren F1. This thing at Goodwood was a rare moment where raw speed alone was enough for it to be spectacular no matter how much or how little you knew about it, regardless (or in some ways partially _because_ ) of the lack of noise. Everyone knew they were witnessing something new and extraordinary. I'm not capable of imagining what it feels like at the helm, but kudos to Henry for trying to articulate it!

I've got to say as much as everyone minces on about noise I think it is overrated, as a 17 y/o I learnt 'he on the noisy bike gets nicked for speeding before the quiet bike rider'. Most of us who have been round long enough wear earplugs when circuit driving/racing because you really don't want to lose your hearing because of a hobby. Secondly I live near Castle Combe and know only too well how a noisy track is perceived by the general public. Once we switch over to EV racing we'll be able to use tracks 24/7 without any nimbys becoming apoplectic (well they may decide they do not like the lights...).

Several years ago, on a strange whim, I think after digging out an old Tamiya Hornet RC car while cleaning up a bunch of junk, I went and bought the latest Traxxas RC. I quickly out-demanded that car, and went with the fully loaded Rally VXL, brushless motor, got the big LiPo battery, the works. That changed my whole viewpoint on vehicle dynamics, and even electric propulsion, When I can START AS A CAR IS GOING BY AT 30+mph, and catch up before it’s a car length ahead, that’s quick. That little car could hit my recorded top speed on my side street of 54mph within 5 seconds, most of that spent trying to keep it straight. With better alignment and chassis integrity, it could easily hit 60 in less than 3 seconds. Scale that up 10 times. And that shriek of the RC was cool too. I seriously thought at first in this video they were filming an RC, as it sounds and moves JUST like this car. Amazing.

On the subject of G force. Fighter pilots go through extensive training and physical conditioning to withstand the G forces they endure, but those G forces are almost entirely in a longitudinally oriented direction. Yes, airplanes can fly sideways, but not for long and not with enough sustained Gs to approach what this car is doing. The lateral G forces of 2.8 is astounding. Asserting maybe a 190lb weight for our host, that’s 532lbs he’s feeling as his innards press so forcefully against the side of his rib cage. No wonder he was breathless. I’m kinda surprised it didn’t give him nausea. But that’s just the body. The brain deals with this in ways we have yet to fully understand, aside from studies done on the aforementioned aerospace pilots. Tread lightly.

Thanks Henry for putting us in the driving seat and taking us through the experience ( beautifully created words and video)- an almost physical experience to watch! This video is as seminal to us car geeks as Tiff taking the McLaren F1 to Goodwood to ‘give it some stick!!’

Henry, I have great respect and love of your version of motoring journalism, often watching you working performance cars hard with a cool head and composed mind, it really is the measure of the McMurtry to create the largest eyeballs I have ever seen you wearing. I saw the car do a demo run at Goodwood (Sunday) in the dry, and it ran 39 seconds. The winning Sunday shootout car, the magnificent McLaren Solus managed 45 seconds. I watch youtube stuff everyday, and every once in a while something special comes up, you and the McMurtry is such a thing. Bloody marvellous

I'd love to have a longer uncut driver point of view shots like from 4:00 to see what its like. The quick cut scenes with the drones shots are cool, but I think it doesn't convey just how fast it's going. Just my 2 cents.

This is an instant classic video! The sheer bewilderment on your face, Harry, was worth every second. What an incredible experience. Reminds me of all of those sci-fi movies that go from a vertical takeoff to hyperspeed before they reach a few hundred feet. Always wondered what those poor passengers looked like after that kind of gravitational punishment. Now we know. This is where that worn phrase, "what a thing" actually applies.

@@allensaunders449 If you read or watch things about other high power EV's the conclusion is, that they all are too much for the driver. Maybe we've reached the end and manufactureres start to make some small and fun cars again that can be used. Just as in the bikes world. More scramblers, adventure bikes and coffee racers are appearing because superbikes are just too fast for the roads. A new Elise would be wonderfull. EV with 400 miles of range and under 1000kg ;-)

In the overhead shots, this looked all the world like watching an RC car in terms of unrealistic extreme maneuverability, acceleration and appearance really. Nothing we now know prepares you for this, kind of like how videos of UFOs show them moving unrealistically in terms of extreme speed, extreme maneuverability and extreme acceleration. Henry's right, this is a sea change.

I guess car guys don't actually learn physics in school. You cannot put a small battery and flow 750 kw through motors for long, which is why this was only run on a 40 second hillclimb. It's about as high tech as lighting a rocket. A 60 kwhr battery at 1000hp or 750kw output will last 4.8 minutes. As for fan downforce...it was a stupid idea in 1970 and never won a race, it was a dangerous cheat in 1978 when Murry "invented" it for the second time. Greatest British engineering feat since the hovercraft.

@@truantray a 60 kwh battery at 750 kw output will last 4.5 minutes but you forget the regenerative braking. And a Chiron eat all his gas tank under 10 min at 250 mph. it doesn't mean the car can't sustain more 10 min in a track.

The Chaparral 2J Can-Am from 1970, one of my favorite cars of all time!!! I like when someone add something to a car that make it much more faster/better. The 2J was banned due the fan output expelled dust/debris from the ground and it was dangerous to the other competitors behind. I hope team McMurtry can control this someway.
