When he said "large purse", he wasn't kidding. $35,000 in 1911 is almost a $1,000,000 today.

It's well worth it. The car is amazing. I see a new detail on it every time I visit the museum.

I was just studying for 2 or 3 hours about the Marmon company then looked up the date of the very first Indy 500 race, and it was exacyly 110 years ago today

Ray harroun later created his own car company called Harroun Motor Company which didnt last long and worked for lincoln motors

my great great grandfather, james wilbert updike was part of the design team that came up with the design, he was one of the engineers that suggested that instead of a riding mechanic, they add a rearview mirror to reduce the weight that seating a riding mechanic would add

Hello, I am a motor journalist from Germany and I am working on a video report about important innovations in the history of cars. One of my highlights is the first ever use of a rear view mirror by Mr Ray Harroun in the first Indy 500 race in 1911. During my research I found your video "This Car Matters: Marmon Wasp - First Indianapolis 500 Winner“. Could you tell me if it is possible to use some parts of this material for my project? Of course I will state „Hagerty Drivers Foundation“ as the source of the parts I use. The final video report will be shown on RU-vid and on n-tv (biggest German news television) as well as on some other major websites like MSN, etc. . It would be absolutely great if you could give me the permission to use this material, because it fits so perfectly. Looking forward to hear from you. Kind regards Lars

I was searching last week for a model car kit of the car, because it is so symbolic of " The Greatest Race ". I love the Indy 500 and the ground it is run on. I've been to several races and can't think of anything as mind blowing as it is. Everything about it is perfect. I hope Roger Penske understands that, and keeps it in its original format... everything.

@6:00,, Who still believes that this was the first time a rear view mirror was used on an automobile? I'm a huge fan of Donald Davidson, but having seen several different items published between 1905 and 1909, it would appear that others beat Harroun to the claim of "first use of a rear view mirror on an automobile". The first use on a race car? Possibly.

I've followed the Indianaopolis 500 since I was boy. Growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I watched some local boys do good, by the name of Unser. Had the chance to meet all of them at one point or anothet. Bobby, Al and Al Jr. all very gracious with their time and very nice gentlemen. I'd love to get tp Indiana again and see the spectical of the 500 in person or at least the museum. In the early 80's I was flying to Zionsville, Indiana with some friends to inspect an antique airplane they were interested in and got tp fly over the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; What a sight!
