When people hear about uric acid, it’s almost always in the context of it being a causal factor for gout.
But if more people knew the full extent of how it affects our metabolism, cardiovascular health, and risk for Alzheimer’s and dementia, we might pay more attention to it.
In this episode of Health Theory, Dr. David Perlmutter returns with the latest research on how uric acid is about much more than just gout.
He explains the relationship between uric acid, insulin, and fructose, why it doesn’t mean that all fruits are bad for you, and how our modern problem with uric acid is actually the result of a disconnect between evolution and environment.
If you want to dive deeper into the latest knowledge bomb from Dr. Perlmutter, you’ll definitely want to check out his new book, Drop Acid: The Surprising New Science of Uric Acid - The Key to Losing Weight, Controlling Blood Sugar and Achieving Extraordinary Health

QUOTES:
“A lot of roads lead to the Rome of inflammation, and set the stage for things like Alzheimer's and coronary artery disease. And because of that, it's the reason that a monotherapy or a one drug approach to Alzheimer's, for example, is beyond myopic. It's never going to work.” [03:02]
“Our metabolic health globally is in a terrible place. I mean, a third of American adults have hypertension, and 10% of kids aged 12 to 18 have hypertension. That's crazy. 50% of adult Americans will be obese by the year 2030. Not just overweight, but obese.” [04:16]
“Elevation of uric acid is associated with an 80% increased risk of dementia, a 55% increase risk of Alzheimer's specifically, and a 165% increased risk of vascular dementia.” [13:53]
“What would be the upside of having uric acid create insulin resistance, and therefore cause blood sugar to go up? Why? Because when you're starving, it'll help power your brain.” [16:50]
“What we're seeing now are these metabolic derangements that underlie these diseases that represent a disconnect between evolution and environment.” [22:06]
“If it has a barcode, and it's in the grocery store, it has added sweetener - 70% do. And by and large that comes from high fructose, there's the villain corn syrup that we subsidize to the tune of $500 billion a year.” [25:01]
“Uric acid levels are climbing in lockstep with fructose consumption. In the 1920s, average uric acid level in Americans was about 3.5 - it's now six.” [46:50]

High uric acid is bad. I thinks this contradicts the high protein low carb or keto diet if Uric acid is the problem. To control high Uric Acid knocks out a lot of healthy foods-herring, trout, tuna and shell fish. This is why dieting is so discouraging. So many contradictions. Even though he is stressing fructose, to my knowledge, there are a lot of healthy foods that increase uric acid. Is uric acid really bad or is it bad when generated as a result of fructose and sugar? If you don’t have gout can you have all the healthy foods even if they increase uric acid? I can eliminate red meat/eat sparingly. But the seafoods are healthy sources of omega 3 even though they increase uric acid. On keto, I won’t be consuming all the carb recommended to decrease uric acid. Most diets are against the high fructose and sugar so agreeing to this. I already know sugar is bad. Maybe just eliminating sugar in general to start and see if that helps with my inflammation. There is a lot of healthy foods that increase uric acid which leads to my confusion.

Getting to the point, because they didn't: 1) Avoid fructose, most premade foods in grocery store 2) Purines come from red meat and certain alcohols, eat/drink in moderation 3) No one size fits all because we are all different, hence knowing your Uric Acid level with a blood test will tell you how far you need to go to avoid fructose and purines (red meat) or if your body can handle it, 7 you need to change your food/drink choices.

My eyes have been well and truly opened , I almost died in 2019 was put in an induced coma. I came out of hospital worse then I went in. I had gut inflammation and seriously thought my days were numbered and why didn't I just die in that hospital. My gp wasn't interested so I kept going back and going back and had the good luck to have a diffrent gp on the day of my appointment, my normal gp was of. From that day on this young guy helped me and got me the right treatment. If I hadn't of had to fight to get the help and found this wonderful gp who listened to me and not just want to write out yet another prescription I dread to think what I'd be like now. I don't ever see my old gp . He was old school. You do find a lot of younger gps are better informed and not out to keep earning money ever time they write out a new drug on the market by big pharma. Question everthing don't just take it as truth because a doctor says to take drugs , Questions questions and more questions also do your home work. We have knowledge at our finger tips. Its not hard to find.

I’m a nurse over 20 years. And I have developed ankle pains two years ago. My primary care physician sent me to a podiatrist who couldn’t find anything wrong with my feet or ankles. Debilitating ankle pains drove me to do my own research to find out the root causes. Thanks to, the uric acid focused health topics that I have accidentally listened to. My uric acid is 6.6. And they say it’s normal if it’s less than 7. But based on my ankle pain, my physician start to prescribe me with allopurinol. And my ankle pain literally has disappeared in three days!. I believe, in this country people do not do preventative care. They only do sick care. If I would have waited for my uric acid to exceed 7.0 I would have developed serious gout and other more serious health issues. And by the way, sleep apnea is one of the major cause of high uric acid level. so you guys make sure to check if you have sleep apnea. I believe High uric acid has caused me to develop pre-diabetes. To live optimal life please Keep checking your uric acid level. Thank you Tom for doing a wonderful job bring this to public attention!

Uric acid levels have risen, yes, because of high fructose and other sweeteners, but also because of the horrific amounts of seed oils now in almost everything. I stay away from sugar for the most part because of the higher uric acid levels and the many other deleterious effects on the human body. I also real labels and if it says "sunflower oil" or "canola oil" or other vegetable oils, I won't buy it. You have to be careful at restaurants too because most of what is cooked, is cooked in vegetable oil, a leading cause of inflammation.

Well meat doesn’t rise uric acid neither pulses or high protein, recently I had bad attack of gout with elevated uric acid and I never eat red meat. What I figured out triggered mine is : Lack of sleep due to night shifts. Poor diet more sugar in diet. Lack of exercise Less water intake Intermediate fasting also triggered Basically main reason of elevated uric acid is our body is unable to get rid of waste. All we need is detoxification. I am on that path will update after one month if anyone interested. Thanks Tom and Dr. For great info.

I was allowed to eat chicken after I told them I had gout and had been on 200mg of alupurional a day for the 3 years. Well long story short. I never ate chicken for two weeks and no alupurinol tablets. About 4 months ago I completely changed my lifestyle. I reduced intake of carbohydrates, including fructose. No longer I eat sweet fruits, starchy vegetables, baked goods, and of course I consume no sugar. I eat low carb foods only. I have lost about 33 lb. I eat no meat (except for fish), I drink no alcohol and I keep both intermittent and non-intermittent fasting. Except for fresh water, I drink a lemon water, coffee and tea almost daily. And results? My uric acid level is 574 (no units stated in my medical report), which I've been told is terribly high. In addition I have occasional muscle weaknesses, affecting especially legs, neck and facial muscles.

I pretty much ferment everything now days, my milk to kefir, my fruit to add to kefir shakes and my vegtables to make a nice sour snack. People don't realize how much sugar is in onions so I ferment that also and add tumeric and pepper which are great inflammatory's helps with pain. There are so many fermented drinks you can make but I like the kombucha and I ferment out all the sugar last time too much and it made vinagar. But I also like to make Apple Cider Vinegar and this helps with sugars in system as well. This all sounds easy and wonderful, but in real life we are out on the road, we have all these wonderful holiday's and it takes determination. But what I found is when I am off track and I read about this way of life and watch these kind of video's it encourages me to get back on track so here I am watching again cause during a move to a new home stress, lack of time and hunger send me to bad places. Not to mention not getting enough sleep. So we come back and do it again and hopefully we develop such a habit of doing it right nothing else will do. Thank you guys for keeping us informed and putting this video up where I can come back again and again.

May be have a real doctor who is expert in medicine - I am so done with pseudoscience 😢I am writing a book now because all my patients get confused from internet information 😏 Here is the thing - eat pro and pre biotics, eat vegetables get annual physical and blood work, drink beer root juice shots with your cardio, drink moringa water and olive leaf tea, pasture raise completely boiled eggs (not half fried), eat seeds in portion, kiwi is great fruit use it along with berries, do not eat raw tomatoes cook them to lycopene can be release, try to cook your green instead of eating raw like Saag, eat high ANDI score raw vegetables like cucumber raddish onions - Every morning make lemonade with saffron punch of salt and honey ,drink decaf coffee for flavonoid, add organic clean dark chocolate in your diet, alcohol is neurotoxic, rotate seeds that you eat, drink kefir or small portion of cottage cheese - drink matcha tea if you can afford it, go out in sun it will increase serotonin and melatonin - in salads have high quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar - don’t run in cities where traffic gives out toxic fumes drive to a park if possible or work out at home, smell rosemary oil twice a day if possible - use organic Amla oil , moringa oil, vitamin e , black sesame oil for your hair and also you can put in water with saffron and massage your face - kiwi and papaya are great skin chemical exfoliate you can make it’s masks at home- and listen to 40hz biurnal vibrations from RU-vid - meditate 5 mts twice a day - have fun and be thankful and remember life sucks until it doesn’t and then it sucks again- remove the condition of absence of pain in order to feel fulfilled - life is not a race it’s a dance - share it with many and try do good- forgive ❤

I eat a lot of cold water fish as part of my diet - essentially, kind of Asian - lots of vegetables and fish. I don't experience any of the symptoms that he is talking about. I have great energy and never get sick. I am lean and muscular in my 60's. This guy is obviously trying to generalize in an area that has far too many variables to say anything is 'A' or 'B'. For example, I take in lots of fiber, both plant based and supplemental like psyllium husk. Does fiber mitigate certain things? Absolutely. Be careful to look at your functioning - are you lean, do you have lots of energy, do you get sick very often, do you eliminate well? These are questions that will guide you more than any one diet or philosophy.

Genetics also play a role. Habits paired with other habit too. It’s really hard yes, not to generalize, but this is just one research findings. The more broad and varied their test subjects are, they may find more things out that may or may not be consistent to whatever the current research is. Individuals can always can be a unique case, but it looks like at least from this guy’s personal investigation with what he’s been working on, at least he believes in the various correlations. This is incredible timing for me!! My family of 8 all started eating Keto and lost lots of weight and regained our health. So many health issues completely disappeared, I thought we had it all figured out. Then my husband's high blood pressure came back, his tummy came back and he developed gout. I discovered he had been eating more and more carbs, but we didn't see the connection. When the gout got bad enough, he stopped eating the carbs, and his pain subsided. His doctor has been NO help. My husband tested very high for uric acid and so finding this discussion was so helpful. We're going to share Dr. Perlmutter's book with the doctor. Thank you!!

My husband's numbers, however, were not as dramatic and with this new understanding of uric acid, it starts to make so much more sense. Unfortunately, our doctor is completely unaware of any of this.
