I am always on the quest to learn new things in my outdoor pursuits. I have become quite obsessive with fly fishing the past year and this week I purchased a new rod for Tenkara style fly fishing.
I unbox the Tenkara Rod Co Sierra rod in this video and talk about how it makes sense for me for backpacking.

They make a 4 pc rod that breaks down for back packing , but if your just into this as a zen experience and challenging yourself to see what you can catch with a minimalist rod set up , I totally understand, I live in west central Florida and am a saltwater fly fisherman that ties my own flies, and I have an expandable 12’ft carbon fiber rod that I could use and the thought of catching small tarpon or sea trout now crosses my mind , it’s the challenge thing I guess , all I can say is good luck and “ tight lines ! “ 👍🏼

Enjoyed seeing you get acquainted with your new rod for the first time. For the past ten years I've been using two Orvis Frequent Flyers rods (4wt &5wt) for backpacking and even with the additional gear, they work well...short rod tubes that can fit inside a UL backpack. However, I'm about to purchase my first Tenkara rod (the Rhodo) and give it a try out on the small steams of the Smokies and the back country creeks/streams in Colorado. Your vid convinced me to give the Tenkara method a try.

When I was a kid and the mayflies came out, I'd head down to the edge of the lake with a cane pole rigged with nothing but a line and hook. Then, I would place a mayfly on the hook and cast it out. I caught more fish this way than any other method.

Congratulations on the new tenkara rod. I think you would appreciate how a better fly rod would fish. Your reddington rod is most likely a fast action rod. If you upgrade to an Orvis or Sage slow action rod your line lay down is much softer and won’t spook the fish as easy. The tenkara rod co makes an even smaller rod that would fit in a backpack perfectly. I think it’s call the mini Teton. Looking forward to your rod review video. Tight lines. 🎣

One option for a lightweight rod case is to build one out of fluorescent bulb protectors. You can pick them up at Home Depot. It’s a really lightweight plastic tub that goes around a fluorescent bulb to contain any shattered glass. It makes a great lightweight case. And really cheap. Anyways thought you might find that helpful. Good luck and tight lines!!! Nothing beats backcountry fly fishing!!!!!

Great video. You will have a blast in Utah with that rod Devin! I've always packed my flyrod on my backcountry trips - until my Uinta Highline Trail hike last year which made me decide to switch to the Tenkara. I'll still take my regular flyrod for shorter, fishing focused trips. But if there's a destination goal and doing bigger miles is required, I think the Tenkara is a better choice.

Talks about tenkara. Shows clip of traditional fly rod catching fish. 😂
@Motorep146
@Motorep146 4 года назад
The thing I don't like about Tenkara is that you have no line control over the fish. With a traditional fly rod you can strip line in and play the fish safely. All the Tenkara videos I see the anglers are bouncing the fish off rocks as they try to land them. Kind of goes against humane catch and release if your fish ends up with a headache haha! I'll stick to my traditional 2wt where I can high-stick (like Tenkara) or actually make a long cast if needed (Tenkara is limited on lakes).
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure 4 года назад
Motorep146 all that makes sense and something I’ve noticed myself. Definitely will be mindful of that while out. Wetting hands before handling the fish and doing my best to not let them bounce around in the net is important too.
@kantill
@kantill 4 года назад
You can play the fish, I think too many people are more concerned about getting the fish in the net quickly instead of playing the fish.
@Motorep146
@Motorep146 4 года назад
@@kantill Yeah, there's some truth in that statement for sure. In most videos the guys are just yanking the fish to them as quickly as possible. Again, I can see this as a viable option. The handling of the fish can be addressed by the angler but sometimes you need that extra casting distance to reach the fish and Tenkara is limited in that regard. I break it down like this on my trips: stream and rivers with small lakes I'll take my 2wt. Bigger lakes with streams and rivers my 5wt. If it's mainly deeper and larger lakes I'll take my UL spinning outfit.
@Motorep146
@Motorep146 4 года назад
@@BackcountryExposure I'm definitely looking forward to the new content that will come as you integrate this setup into your trips.
@kantill
@kantill 4 года назад
@@Motorep146 I use all types of fishing gear. I have tenkara, fly rods, spinning and a couple bait casters somewhere. Each has there place and use for sure. Only defense I can give the RU-vid tenkara people is in Japan that is how they do it. It's set the hook and yank the fish right of the water. But like I said you can play a fish and I have landed some pretty nice rainbows with mine. That being said I have been looking at a either a two wt or three wt just for the fun of it. That and a spey rod setup would be awesome to use on the kenai.
