Nowadays even a slow puncture is a problem as you don't have any spare wheel. About ten years ago I noticed that I got a slow puncture on my motorcycle tyres when the tyres were close to EOL!

That a fair amount of adjustment has been done on the rear left, I would suspect the adjuster is free. I would be checking the rear arm for damage.

Those rear eccentric bolts always seize. Also see if there is any paint missing on the arms or the subframe (rustypatches) Sometimes when bent the paint will flake off in the spot.

I am absolutely anal about tyres and brakes (followed by oil)! Mercifully no major incident occurred. When I was an agency van driver in lockdown, I once refused to take a van out because it had an illegal tyre that was virtually bald. I'm the one taking the risk and facing the points. Before I drive any vehicle that doesn't belong to be, I make sure to do all the basic checks (almost like a pilot would). Had too many close calls in my youth and learnt the hard way.

Hi George, I’d not usually be on the shops side but I’d say they’re right in what they’re saying, they lined it up as good as possible and the adjustments were good bar that one, I’d say an arm has to have a bend in it or something like that, it still seems to be out considerably

They probably found the rear adjustment rusted and they could not move it it’s happened to my 530d 4 years old with 34 k miles 😮

Battered down the side. It’s had more hits than Elvis. I’ve never bought a car from Birmingham Bradford etc. loads of clocked smashed up shit boxes for sale in these areas for some reason 🤷‍♂️

It's true that if parts are really worn, it can make it hard or impossible to get the tracking done properly. I know because it happened with an e90 I had.

I think you really should just spend as little as possible on this motor just enough to keep it road worthy and legal. Alternatively , you could use it as project car to rectify all the faults you have highlighted, i am sure that would keep you busy for the rest of the year. I should imagine there could be some very interesting videos. Again you have to remember it is a diminishing return .

I had my tyres changed yesterday on my bmw x5 40d. The rears inner edges were bald down to the wire. I only noticed as i took my wheels off to paint my brakes. Apparantly x5's are the worse with run flats as the sides take the brunt off the weight and wear out faster. Theres loads off e series cars that suffer from inner tyre wear but x5's are the worst

I don't know about the UK, but in NZ, specialised wheel alignment/geo or whatever you want to call it seems nonexistent. It comes down to tyre shops doing robotic adjustment with a Hunter alignment machine. Does anyone in New Zealand (I think I just heard an echo) specialise in alignment? Like you say though, keep an eye on wear. At least then you know somethings up.

Hi George your retest in December shows that it was close to the limit and bald on o/s front and rear? Not great just leaving it in this weather, could have ended badly, and it would have been your fault for having defective tyres. Not having a go because it’s easily done but this was picked up at mot. I think you should get rid of that car, it’s a headache! lol.

Could the removal of your current garage mean good news for your BiG Project?? Very Much hope so George!! I Would personally love to see a rear subframe removal, even if only for inspection purposes. Reason being the rear subframe on my 2007 E87 120D is very rusted (treated it shortly after buying it) and I'm pretty sure the Camber / Toe arm eccentric bushings are rusted into the frame itself, as a very reputable garage up here in Manchester refused to attempt a 4 wheel alignment. Therefore this is next big job for me but I have no reference at all. Glad you're OK!!!

I made sure I sprayed a metric ton worth of penetrating oil on those bolts that go through the bushes before any alignment.

I appreciate you do not have a garage but how long will it take to jack up the rear OS and remove the wheel so you can inspect the suspension. At least you will then know if their is anything that requires your immediate attention. You never know it might be a straighforward fix

@@GeorgeAusters Yes, I did. And answered before you showed the alignemet paperwork. One of my preveous 'specialyties' was to read car issues from tire wear. So, my own BMW eats a set of rear tires on two trips from Norway to Florence (Firenze) Italy. Awerage speed, including cities, 90++ km/hour. And my car has an toe out issue on both rear wheels. This car has an Alpina undercarridge. And someone suggested that excessive toe out would give a better performance on high speed driving with sharp turns. So the adjustment could be on purpose. But it's quite expensive to replace rear tires every 10000 km. And we rearly drive faster than 180 km/hr on Autobahn, too much traffic.

It's from Birmingham, it will have been smashed into kerbs. You might get away with replacing arms but that would usually just get it a Cat N.

@@GeorgeAusters Possibly, but I've had quite a few Cat N's from Copart that had bent arms, and were obvious from the outside as the wheels were pointing in different directions! I think Cat S is supposed to be applied when the main chassis/monocoque has damage. Think of a suspension arm as a replaceable component like a wing or bonnet. They are actually designed to deform in a crash, almost like a mechanical fuse, so as to save damage to the mounting points. With your car, I'd be taking a close look at the arms, compare them to the other side is a good idea then replace as necessary. Toe still being that far out after an alignment would suggest track control arms but it really could be anything. You'd hope your alignment place would check for damage components though, especially if they can't adjust it to within factory spec.
