Fellow Prius driver, and fellow Toyota pickup-RV fan! A couple years ago, my friend bought an '86 Toyota Sunrader, the smaller fiberglass version of the one featured here. No leaks, runs and drives great, BUT... ...Toyota underspecced and overloaded the dually axle from the factory, to the point that the manual implores you to drain all the water tanks before driving it. Don't carry unnecessary weight in the back. And check all the tire pressures every single day. That combined with all the clearly-original wiring horrors, really shook my confidence in Toyota's quality. It needed a lot of love. We slapped some solar on the roof to give that poor alternator a break, and that's actually hilarious -- it's drivable with the alternator completely disconnected, as long as the sun is shining, the panels make enough power for the fuel pump, brake lights, etc.

@myself248 "That combined with all the clearly-original wiring horrors, really shook my confidence in Toyota's quality" You have to realize though that Toyota had nothing to do with the conversion into a mini motorhome. The company that did the conversion probably recieved the chassis with cab and drivetrain but no pickup bed so that they could save a little money and not have a bunch of Yota bed's that they would have to either sell or scrap. All of the wiring nightmares and underrated charge systems were the fault of the RV manufacturer.👍🖖

The Toyota one ton pickups were a total heap of junk. For starters you need three spare tires, one for the front axle and two matching for the rear duel axle. As the rear axle takes a different rim. And it only gets worse from there, as the automatic transmission is not up to that much weight. I almost lost my Vanagon Westy to being behind one that rapidly rolled backwards after blowing said automatic transmission...

You need to check over the Type II van before leaving for your next trip. Next engine rebuild, you want to add hydraulic lifters, Oil Pump with filter, Weber carb kit, and internally regulated alternator. You also want to add the following gauges voltmeter, oil pressure and temperature gauge... And engine rebuilds will last about 80k miles on modern gasoline, but will go another 40k miles on just new heads....

I did the old "fold the brake line over and hit it with a hammer" trick on a snowmobile trip one time in the middle of a blizzard. Made it another 400 miles because the shop that we stopped at wanted to charge us $1200 to fix one brake line, so we just ran it as is.

Many are called Dolphins. I see a couple of them around here all the time. I got a very early first year japanese made T100 that is basic as possible. Everything is manual. It has about 800k miles and going strong. One crazy thing about it is one can drop a sbc in it and only have to get a bell housing adapter. Like the trans and clutch Toyota out behind a 3.0 single overhead cam low powered V6 will hold up better than the trans and clutch GM has put behind 5.7L V8's for years.

I always wondered how other states do it. Since about 2001, Arizona has had it where you can temporarly get a paper tag to print out thats good for 3 days that is only for getting a vehicle you purchase from sale to home. and then register and everything has been online too. They finally just added about 5 years ago able to xfer title and register new cars online. that was the ONLY thing i ever went to the MVD for was to register a new car i just purchased and get the title xfered to me. Now its all online :)

I beg to differ. Those RVs were recalled for inadequate hubs. If you buy one and the rear hubs are flush instead of protruding like an F250, for example, you're asking for trouble. There is a vid on YT about this very issue. A buddy of mine toured his all acoustic band in one of these. They ended up on fire on the side of the road. I've ridden in one of these. They feel like they'll flip over every time you make a turn. Clearly too much machine on too little frame. Not a fan.

These have a 'cult' following, and you'd better become one of them if you plan to keep this. There's a number of issues with these to watch for and you really need to know what the experienced owners know. The brake line isn't a hard fix but you'll have to make them yourself which requires a few specialty tools and careful work. In fact on anything this old you're smart to just redo them all as they tend to rust from the inside out and can look perfect right before they pop. Do the rubber hoses too, as well as a full rebuild of the brakes themselves and all the hardware. The rear ends were never designed for the load and those in particular are a problem so unless you find and swap in something better you need to maintain them meticulously and often, being sure to not ever overload them any further. Slow going with the small engine but these have as good a fuel mileage as you can get from an RV which can make a big difference if you really want to travel. You'll get out of it what you put in it and they don't appear on the market much in good shape, so if you like it then grit your teeth and rebuild it from stem to stern instead of fixing what breaks as you go. If you don't want to do that then get something else which will have a more addressable set of problems and sell this to someone looking exactly for this. And know that any RV is going to eat your time and money continuously without offering a good return on the cost except for the joy using it. How much joy you get will depend entirely on how well you maintain it; get lax and it'll cost you a lot more. Owning an RV is like having another wife who has expensive tastes; unless it gets all it wants it won't be happy and neither will you till you part ways with it. Like owning a boat, the happiest days of your life are when you get it and when you get rid of it; in between it's going to keep eating at your wallet constantly.
