I don't think it's crazy to get attached to a car like that. It's almost an antique, and in a few years restorers will be looking for barn-finds of that style. So why give up a good thing? Instead of looking at it like a cheap used beater, view it as a classic, worthy of restoration, but with almost no restoration needed.

So amazing I purchased a 2002 Chevy trailblazer with 156k miles single owner for $2000, and then this video comes up today!! Got this vehicle 2 weeks ago as a winter beater and to transport my two dogs without worrying about dirt, mud, fur (shedding) etc. Has the exact engine that Scotty is talking about here and the interior’s leather is is great condition, AC blows cold, shifts smooth, etc. I’m getting some work done on it, (breaks, spark plugs, etc.) and I’m hoping it will last another 100k miles. Thanks Scotty, you removed any doubt I had about this vehicle and now I’m convinced I got a great deal!!! Oh only thing is that it’s not the most fuel efficient, but other then that I’m ok 😎😜😉

Thanks Scottie. The reason it runs fine, looks so nice, and he has 300,000 miles is that he cares about all these things. I know what you mean in that it doesn't matter but it is more of a mindset with this individual. The other thing I tend to keep in mind, though old, a lot of repairs are often much less costly on just what the sales tax is on a new or used vehicle. As such, I tend to go a long time with what I own.
@anonymike8280

The world does not want your deliberative thinking, but you have a point. My vehicles last a very long time and I do no more than is necessary. But I do the necessary maintenance and follow the specifications of the production and the products I use. One thing I know people do not want to accept is that all-short-trips driving does represent severe duty. My vehicle used dinosaur (conventional) oil as original equipment. I use semi-synthetic in it and change it at 2800 miles. The manual says 5W-30 or 10W-30 if the temperature does not go below 0 Fahrenheit. I don't theorize about which one is better in what season. Whatever is on sale, that's what I use. Any low-end or no-name filter is good for 5000 miles. I say, don't pay for specifications you are not going to utilize. Another thing to know is that low-end Group III synthetic oil is just highly refined dinosaur oil. Semi-synthetic is just dinosaur oil with some Group III thrown in. Calculate your oil change interval accordingly if your engine requires synthetic. The cheap stuff will meet the specifications but don't leave it in for an extended period.

My wife inherited a 2004 Trailblazer (EXT) from her father. 111K miles. The "EXT" is 18 inches longer and had a third-row seat. No major issues with Engine or tranny. There have been several minor issues over the years, but it's been reliable transportation. I just popped the hood to see that it does indeed say "Vortex 4200". There are currently three minor things wrong that aren't worth fixing; (1) original CD player no longer works (2) rear defroster doesn't work (3) heater/AC fan speed knob position "5" (highest speed) simply turns the fan off. My first car had a straight six in it - a 1960 Dodge Dart station wagon, with the infamous slant six 225.

I have the same year except mine is the GMC version, envoy. She's got 160k and going strong. I replaced the shift servo on the transmission to a corvette servo and my transmission works better. However, she now holds the 1st gear much longer than before. I believe this trucks owner might have had the servo replaced too and that's what the shift delay is. it only does it 1-2 and the rest of the gears it shifts normal. You've mentioned one of these in a video a few years back and it definitely helped me make the decision to buy it. I replaced plenty of parts on mine when I got it used and I'm hoping it lasts me up to 300k+ miles too!

For durability, the 4.2 is an incredible durable and reliable engine. Just change the oil more frequently than the system recommends, along with all the other fluids and this drive train will go forevever. Only slight negative is the lackluster mpg. I'd take this engine over the V8 with cylinder deactivation issues and intake leak any day. Nearly the same hp and torque, very smooth, and easy to maintain.

I had a code like that. No visible leaks, no gas smell. I live where it had to be fixed to renew license. Did not have a smoke machine. So I started guessing. Replaced the purge valve $35 (that was not the problem), replaced the gas cap $20 (that was not the problem), The fuel filler pipe looked really rusty (like a rusty exhaust pipe) so replaced it too $100 (that was the problem). The fuel filler pipe had many pin holes in the lower half. Also had some big rust holes where mounted against the body (that you could not see until the pipe was off the car). To see the pin holes you stand in sunlight and look inside the pipe to see the light beams inside the pipe. I was glad I fixed the fuel filler pipe, it was so corroded it was dangerous and would only have gotten worse over time. Yes, I live in the rust belt. Prices shown are for the part only. Hope this helps somebody.

This is my vehicle. I’ve owned it since 2004. Only had to do small repairs to the engine- a couple of coil packs, the stupid fan clutch, vvt solenoid, and motor mounts. Used Castrol 10w-30 and Lucas oil and only changed oil when the system light came on. The front end is junk in these and I’ve replaced those components several times because I can’t stand any noises or vibrations.That’s about all. Never done anything to the tranny other than had replace the coolant lines. It’s shifted like that for years, but it’s no big deal. I actually had the ecm reprogrammed a few years ago and it shifted much better. It also had a ton of power! Felt like a V8. I had them put it back to factory after I sold my camper . I will probably have it programmed again once I solve this evap issue. I want to fix that evap so the light will go off- that way I’ll know if it has any other issues. Won’t know if something else is wrong if the light is already on. I’m also OCD, so it has to be fixed. Yes, that would make me a little crazy (waving my hands all around). I’ll let ya’ll know what the leak is when I get around to dropping the tank. This has been the best running vehicle I’ve ever owned. I just want to see how many miles ‘ol red will go before it finally dies. I sure wouldn’t buy a newer GM vehicle. We bought a 2014 Buick Encore and it’s a POS!

I have an 02 gmc envoy 4.2 liter and have 356k and it's still going strong. Yes I had to replace all the suspension parts, but what do you expect living up here in the northern Minnesota rust belt. All I own is gmc vehicles 02,03,05 and a 2012. Love em all. The rest of my neighbors own ford's, dodges, chevys and they are always broken down.

We've had 2 Trailblazers with the i6. They were both fantastic vehicles & that straight 6 is torquey. Always good to pull the 17 ft fishing boat. The worst part was on the 4x4 ones, the front differential was inside the oil pan. That's why they hold 7 quarts of oil. It was a pain if needed to replace it.

It is such a shame what they've done with vehicles today. It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't charging what they were, but when an average car costs almost $50,000, you expect more. I remember 20 years ago you could buy cheap vehicles like this, which weren't luxurious in any way, but just did what you needed a vehicle to do. That's all a lot of people want.

Good video. I had a similar issue. It turned out the 2000-2009 Chevy Silverado electric fuel pump gaskets go bad and on the pumps with metal tops can rust until they form a hole and trip the same code. Either way as you said it’s an expensive fix. My 2004 Silverado with a 5.3 is still going with 342,000 miles on the original engine and transmission.

I would love it if you could do a video on oil consumption in newer cars because of lighter oils and looser piston/cylinder tolerances used to increase gas mileage. Apparently this is an issue with even your beloved Toyota. Is there anything we can do about it? I have a 2019 Subaru Legacy consuming a quart between oil changes at 65k miles. I already changed the Pcv valve.

Yep, Chevy used to make some very solid reliable vehicles. I believe competition forced them to cut corners to compete with all of the imports. It used to be Ford , Chevy and Dodge competing with each other before car buying turned into a buffet line of imports. Then it went to trucks.
