Not all Chinese made knives are junk. They also produce high quality knives for high prices but most of the time they don't reach the western market. Several US brands are also produced in China, so...

There is a problem here. In the past, Chinese products could only be exported through the government's "foreign trade company", but after receiving an order, this stupid company would only cooperate with the factory with the lowest price. Therefore, exported products must be produced in the cheapest way. But in recent years this foreign trade company has been cancelled. Chinese factories can sign contracts directly with foreign customers and produce according to their requirements

They don't sell them in China probably because there isn't as big of a market there for those knives as it is in Europe and America, yet. There is also the possibility of the knife maker being registered under a different name in China. Great to see some good knives from China getting some exposure tho. It's also refreshing to see so many people giving fair opinions on something that's made in China.

Thousands of years making knives combined with the latest CNC, Robotics and every country in the world sending PHD level machinist to start companies in China. My 30+ year old Chinese kitchen butcher knife is still razor-sharp, hardly worn, original grind still barely visible, only sharpened on a Chinese made 12'' steel. If it says made in China written in English then that's the knives they sell to the West. My knives have Chinese writing on them and this is the stuff that they keep for themselves it's a big difference. 40 years ago I used to study Japanese and Chinese joinery and it would cost $5,000 us for a low-quality saw made by a master. If you wanted something very high quality it would cost you $15,000 and up. Even today you can pay $5,000 for a regular quality pair of bonsai scissors.. I have butcher knives coming in the mail from Thailand right now. The Chinese beat the American stuff a long time ago we just don't buy it here they keep it for themselves. Spend $200 on a usa-made knife and spend $200 on a chinese-made knife. The Chinese $200 knife will be much better than the American. Some companies like Kuby buy their D2 steel from Germany United States and Japan

@Josh ??? I am an amateur knife collector, 250+ from old folders to Kukri etc. About 25 years ago I bought a matching pair of a cleaver and a 9'' butcher knife full tang, brass handles inlaid with stainless steel. Like a Buck knife, instead of wood inlay, stainless steel. This is my only kitchen knife, used daily, never once been sharpened on a stone, only lightly honed with the 12'' steel I bought with the two knives same day. It's still razor-sharp and after 25 years there is almost 'zero' wear on the original grind. Difference is I bought it from a Chinese market, made for Chinese not western. Western companies buy cheap products from China to make profit. As a carpenter 40 years ago I bought 'Shark Tooth' design, pull saws. $5,000 US was bottom line for a saw made by a master. I bought the regular stuff. Where do you think modern metallurgists are going to make products these days. China. They are taking over Africa for natural resources Big Time. BTW, one Chinese company I bought a few knives from buys their steel from USA,Germany and Japan. 10,000 years of civilization and ancient techniques and every country in the world sending their top scientists to China to make products. If you want proof ask Cold Steel that makes knives in Taiwan (china). How is your Chinese computer doing

D2 is a very good steel for industrial die-cutting/tool applications, and it is good for SMALL knives that are used primarily for cutting. It is highly wear-resistant, but NOT strong laterally like a 1095 or other carbon steel. Heat treat is also a factor here. So, if you want a knife that holds an edge and will not be used for ANY lateral stress applications or high impact situations, D2 is fine. Where you have problems is when the knife gets too big and/or people start pounding on them, they WILL break.

yup. d2 for anything that isn't a folder or a small utility fixie makes no sense. it's one of the easier steels to break due to the huge carbides it forms also, 1095 is overrated as hell. its toughness is mediocre at best, and holds the age barely longer than a sheet of paper would. Lurifax I would say CPM-D2 would certainly be atleast somewhat better..the only knife I own with CPM-D2 is the Kershaw Dividend with the N690/CPM-D2 composite blade..it performs well for a fairly small EDC knife but it certainly not something I would want to attempt to use for heavy use...with that being said,CPM-D2 might be a pretty solid improvement for a fixed blade knife..but in the particular knife I own the CPM-D2 seems to be a slight improvement in edge retention,I also find it a little easier to sharpen and the edge isn’t as toothy as regular D2..you definitely got me curious though,I would love to know how much CPM-D2 improves in strength over regular D2,if it does in any significant way at all

That grain looks OK, it's not that fine but at least it's fairly homogeneous, which is better than nothing. Ideally we want to see grain that is so small it is imperceptible, it should look like grey cream on a fractured piece. The worst grain structure is large grains approaching the size of salt crystals that aren't uniform in size. That usually comes from incorrect soak times (time held at temperature during heat treat), incorrect temperature (usually too high) or incorrect quench method (too fast or too slow). In an industrial setting with vacuum ovens and tight QC this is easy enough to avoid.

Is it the steel or is it the heat treat? I would guess its the heat treat. On both knives. I think I can shed some light on the controversy around D2, but this will take some explaining. You know how sometimes someone will claim to have a super secret amazing heat treat that allows an average steel to compete with a super steel. With D2, that actually kind of exists. Or rather D2, is arguably kind of the original super steel, but it is supposed to require a really complicated heat treat in order to reach its full potential. (For an example of D2 as a "super steel" check out Benchmade's custom knife builder. Notice they still offer D2 for a few blades, that its at a very high hardness, and that there is actually an upcharge vs the default option of S30V, though I admit they are using a powder metallurgy version of D2). On the other end of the spectrum, in recent years there has been a trend towards imported budget knives using D2, which means they are probably not heat treating the steel to its full potential. There are a few reasons for this: 1, Its complicated to heat treat correctly. Moreso than some more modern super steels like S30V. And this is not likely to be done with a budget knife. Plus budget manufacturers using D2 might not even know how. If I understand right (and I might not, I'm just a nerd and not a knifemaker or metallurgist) to get the best out of D2 requires something like 3 separate cycles of tempering with cryo-quenching in between, and on top of that I believe at least some of the steps are time sensitive. So a manufacturer of budget knives either might not even know how to heat treat D2 optimally or just might not bother in order to produce the knives quickly and inexpensively. 2, D2 can still be pretty good with a less than optimal heat treat. It can also be heat treated simply, left fairly soft (like say mid 50's), and still have above average wear resistance compared to an inexpensive stainless steel because it contains so much carbon. This would kind of make sense for a good budget knife. The steel itself is probably easy to find and cheap to buy pretty much everywhere because its such an old formula and used so frequently to make dies. As long as it isn't heat treated to a high hardness, its probably not too difficult to machine. And if left relatively soft, it will still make a fairly decent knife (some corrosion resistance, not too brittle, and still with above average wear resistance) 3, Even if a budget manufacturer knows how to do the optimal heat treat, it's way more expensive to make a knife out of D2 this way. Not only do you have the added time and expense of the extra tempering and quenching cycles, but the fully heat treated steel is then going to be way more difficult to grind, mill, sharpen, and finish. Like probably going from a little more difficult than VG-10 to a little more difficult than S30V. As you guys can probably explain better than me, most of the cost of making a knife is in the labor and the wear on the tooling rather than the raw materials. So depending on whether the maker has opted for a fairly simple heat treat or the very complicated, optimal heat treat, with D2, you could actually end up with 3 different sets of properties: 1, A fairly soft, reasonably tough, surprisingly wear-resistant blade (kind of like a more wear resistant AUS-8, though obviously with less corrosion resistance) using a simple heat treat and leaving the steel soft to keep it from being too brittle. 2, A very hard, quite wear-resistant, but very brittle steel, because its been fully hardened, but not fully tempered. (I can't find an RC number for the fixed blade Manley, but they might fall into that category because they do run their folding knives in D2 pretty hard) 3, Optimally heat treated D2 that's been through its full triple temper/quench cycle which will be very hard, surprisingly tough for its level of hardness and wear resistance (optimally heat treated D2 isn't in the same league as say 3V for toughness, but it might rival say 154CM at really high hardness because when its properly tempered, D2's best toughness will come at a surprisingly high hardness, I think RC 62 or maybe even 63), and surprisingly wear resistant for a steel with basically no exotic carbides. Essentially, it will be almost like CTS XHP (after all, XHP is basically a tweaked powder metallurgy version of D2) So I'd guess when you get a completely awesome knife in D2 (like say that Autine Leuku at over $400 and 62RC though to be fair, I don't think you ever shot that one), its probably been optimally heat treated. If you get a cheaper knife (regardless of where its made), its probably going to have a simpler heat treat that doesn't let the steel reach its full potential. Would optimally heat treated D2 in that same blade shape take the shots and not shatter? Honestly, I have no idea for the Chinese knife, and I'd guess not for the Manley. But either way, I'd be surprised if a sub-$60 knife like that made of D2 had been fully tempered.

D2 is a tool steel, known for its toughness, but it requires great expertise to temper it to perfection, the blade edge will not chip if it is given a micro convex on a scandi, or given a convex grind. As we know, a bushcraft knife is not designed to be a pry bar or cold chisel, anymore than a pry bar is designed to be a bushcraft knife. Beside the abuse of this blade there was probably a lack if proper annealing to remove brittleness. Simple carbon steels like 1075, or 01, 80CRV2 , finished to 56 or 58 Rockwell would likely stand the abuse well.
@redcanoe14
@redcanoe14 2 года назад
@Josh ??? Like I said, it's all in the heat treatment and edge geometry. A metallurgist is undoubtably an expert on steel composition and structural qualities of metal, but not an expert in making knives, heat treating and annealing them for a specified purpose. Many say that if you wish to use a bushcraft knife as a pry bar or cold chisel it will fail...but that is not what a bushcraft knife was designed and forged to do. My D2 knives have no greater failure rate than my 01, A2 1075 blades. As to my preference for knife steel I will stick with 80CRV2...most Finnish working knives are made of this.

D2 just isn't the right call here. It's great as a budget folder steel but just isn't tough enough to make a really convincing fixed blade. CPM d2 would have been better but even then there are better options.

I have a folding knife from bestech a company out of china the blade is in d2 also. I almost killed myself with it and it involved a buffing wheel I was trying to clean the wheel with my knife. It flew into me bounced off hit the wall then hit the concert floor I'm fine and the only damage the knife sustained was a roll in the edge.

D2 is not really tough if you don't run it on very low hardness and then you loose lots of edge retention... for the price this is ok but otherwise I would go for a carbon steel if you are going to abuse the knife that bad... something like SK5 or S7 would be suitable and even cheaper in production, but you never get the edge retention of D2 nor the stainless abilities...
