Not to take a middle ground intentionally, but having had all sorts of knives on the higher end, small batch production knives are most reliably consistent performers. You get a balance of consistency from knife to knife with careful, individual attention to detail in quality control. All of that provided that a maker knows what he is doing. Survive!, TRC, Williams Blade Design, Winkler, I think would all be in that category, and obviously there are others. And, obviously it depends on what you want and need. If you want good looks mostly or cost savings or "cool" factor, that's a different story. Only thing that matters for me personally is reliability and performance for my needs.

I’ve started making knives, I’m not forging them, but cutting the shape out of bars of steel, then I temper them with coals and quench them in oil, I couldn’t find my ideal knife so I decided to make it (It’s not done yet)

I personally would prefer a custom knife or a handmade knife a custom knives you can get it customized to fit your hand and no one else's and make it fit your needs with as a factory knife is only made to fit one thing now you can modify it overtime if you have the right tools but that still the same as customizing

I made a knife out of m390 steel, send it in to bohler for heat treatment 62 hrc with certification and it cost me for everything including heat treatment 30 dollars 😁 to buy a knife here with m390 it costs about 200 dollars

Custom knives and factory knives approach similar price points when you start looking at high end materials. Fallkniven and Bark River cost the same or a little more than my custom knives in materials like laminated K390 and Magna-Cut.

Dulo does fantastic with all of their steels

When u compare the price point of benchmade and custom knife. Benchmade cost the same but quality is way lower. However, people tends to go for their design... I’ve just bought a mini bugout which actually can afford a Fallkniven F1... i go for the orange scale 🤣

I mean while I agree with the warranty any custom knife maker worth it will make you a new knife if the one you have breaks or chips etc in a non abusive situation. I had a puukko chip while carving and the knife maker apologized and made me a new one. Sometimes bad HT happen

A test of the different old school "bushcraft"-knifes would be fine. Like the different Kephart-Versions (BK62 vs Bark River Kephart 5 for example) or the Nessmuk knifes, or how is a Old Hickory butcher knive performing nowadays. Back to roots.... ;)

we suppose that a custom knife is better because it should have better quality control, and when the maker buys certified steel he can do hardening tests until reaching an excellent result let's remember guys that the good maker is the one who does the tests with criterion. almost all of the videos on youtube that I find show me someone who cuts and breaks bricks with a knife but AFTER they never try to cut hair, paper and when the test is destructive nobody knows how to interpret the break. grain distribution, the fracture lines where they come from and where they go .... everyone says "oops, dammn. it broke .. I will never buy again .... ***** ..... like the kid in the video who breaks the Mora with a brush ... but please! had first learned to batoning ... unfortunately, and I stress unfortunately I have known makers who have sold a low quality steel instead of a more precious steel ... or (but it would already be a minor damage) incorrect heat treatments ... sure, let's go on trust. are you sure that that custom knife in Vanadis4 Xtra is Vanadis4 Xtra and not Ma5M? only those who are very experienced, have bought many knives AND HAVE REALLY USED AND SHARPENED THEM MANY TIMES (on the stone) in different types of steels can realize. the average collector, who "uses" the knives only to cut the salami and point a stick of fir wood cannot he will never see that he actually bought a 10 € Chinese knife which the "maker" has replaced the grips of the handle and slightly grinded the blade, perhaps polishing it a little better than the factory.
