Every tourist-worthy city boasts its synonymous landmark; London sports Tower Bridge, Paris has the Eiffel Tower, and New York dazzles with the Statue of Liberty. In the same fashion, Barcelona has its awe-inspiring Sagrada Familia.
The basilica is an icon of the nation, a symbol of the Catholic church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it’s still… unfinished?
That’s right - today, more than 135 years after the cornerstone of Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia was laid, it continues to be surrounded by cranes; it continues to cost the government millions of dollars, AND it’s existence is entirely illegal.
Despite its chaotic history and its unfinished facade, the beautiful basilica remains a marvelous example of Gothic architecture, drawing in tens of thousands of tourists every day.
So why did it take so long to build? What makes it illegal? And what’s the Barcelona government doing about it? Stay tuned to find out.

I was born in Barcelona so this city is super important to me. I love La Sagrada Família for what it is. I'm not even a Catholic Christian but I love it for how impressive of a human structure it is. I've been inside 10 years ago in a school trip. It was magical, I can't even begin to describe how awesome its structure looked from the inside. Please go visit it. It's amazing.

It doesn't cost the government "bilions of dollars" because its construction is funded exclusively by private donations, following Antoni Gaudí's wishes. This is also one of the main reasons why it's taking so long to build.
@jordif7310
@jordif7310 2 года назад
It actually rises milions of dollars for the city in the form of tourism and many other indirect net profitable consecuences.
@Bruh..669
@Bruh..669 Год назад
Only the construction itself is off contributions, who do you think pays the workers? Wages, materials, land, etc there are lots of variables that cost money and nothing is free. The government still has to pay for many things that for the people is just impossible to fund solely on contribution
@jarlgromenauer2317
@jarlgromenauer2317 Год назад
@@Bruh..669 Donations are one of two sources where the money for construction comes. The other one is the prize of entry for tourists. The average number of visitors is around 3.1 million who pay 30 euros for entering the church. Thats around 90 million euros a year raised. Thats how wages, materials and all your etcs are paid and one of the main reasons the construction has accelerated in recent decades. Not only the goverment hasnt paid a dime for the building, it recently recieved 36 millions in taxes because the legal status of the construction was finally resolved and the amount to pay for the permits agreed on.

I went to the Sagrada Familia when I visited Barcelona last winter. It is so beautiful. The interior, design, and stained glass windows are amazing. You are also able to go up through the disciple towers in the front to almost the top of the building. The view from up there is beautiful, you can see almost all of Barcelona.

As someone who's born and raised in Barcelona. Barcelonians tend to forget that we have such a marble of a monument in our city. We often don't even pay attention to it even if we live close by, that's how common la Sagrada Familia is for us. In fact most Barcelonians have only seen once or twice the inside of La Sagrada Familia. The long queues and the expensive ticket fees are the biggest deterrents.

Indeed. It is far more than that. When finished it will be... One of the greatest religious structures on earth. One of the greatest tourist attractions in the world. One of the greatest buildings on earth. and One of the finest works of art ever created by mankind. If I was going to make a list of the 7 wonders of the modern world it would absolutely be on it. The time, effort and intricacy of the building is mind-blowing. They planned a massive party for its completion but work has again stopped due to the pandemic. I'll 100% go and see it again hopefully for the opening celebration.

The information in this video is inaccurate. The temple is NOT built with public money but through donations and the sale of tickets to visit it, this is how Gaudí wanted it, and it's one of the reasons why its construction has taken so long as well as the fact that It was partially destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and in post-war times its construction was stopped due to lack of funds.

What do you mean "cost the government millions of dollars every year"? I'm gonna leave behind the redundancy of saying dollars instead of euros. But apart from that, and as you already stated, it is a building initially funded by private donations. And nowadays, the number of yearly visitors and their entrance fees is so vast that the entire construction cost was completely paid more than a decade ago. More than that, it gets the government a lot of revenue in direct taxes; and it generates way more indirect money by being the main symbol of one of the most touristic cities in Europe. Do you imagine Paris without the Eiffel Tower? Or Rome without the Colosseum? Or Istambul without the Haggia Sophia? It's similar with Barcelona and the Sagrada Familia.
