I’m a Cambodian who used to work in Singapore for months and still visit regularly, and let me tell you that Cambodia will never be what Singapore is. We're not lucky to get the geographical jackpot (Strait of Malacca), and we don't have the decades of political stability and strong human resources that Singapore had in the 20th century (Civil War and Genocide, which set us back to the dark ages). We’re way behind in public transport and efficiency, and our infrastructures are still miles away. But this airport might boost the country’s GDP enormously if they do it right. We’re a small country trying to develop our infrastructure in any way we can, and China, Japan, South Korea, and even Singapore are our biggest infrastructure investors. We’re currently on the right path to grow rapidly despite many problems and challenges that must be addressed (which country doesn’t?). As a long-time fan, I’m so happy that B1M covered the project extensively, and my last request to the people in the comments is to please experience the country itself and not judge based on what you hear on the internet. Things are much better now in Cambodia, and we’re improving quickly. I hope my country gets at least the benefit of the doubt before you start bashing it. Thanks
Not to mention one of the main reasons Singapore was able to be what it is is their British derived legal system and Anglo integration, which made facilitating and engaging with the other financial service centers of the world at the time (Hong Kong, NYC, and London) very frictionless. Cambodia has neither those language nor those legal roots.
I'm a Singaporean who works at Cambodia from time to time. I can also share with you that Singapore doesn't have the warmth Cambodians have. That's the sacrifice we make for efficiency. It's amazing to see Cambodia changing. The citizens of today and the future deserve a better life.
It's unrealistic to compare Cambodia to Singapore. Maybe next Thailand. Cambodia faces numerous fundamental challenges that cannot be solved simply by building an airport or improving infrastructure. These issues must be addressed before Cambodia can aspire to reach a fraction of Singapore's level of development.
Or even to compare to Thailand lol! They have no metro or rail system 😂! They just copy Thailand with their new Khun Khmer which replicates Muay Thai… French built in the past and now China builts in present day lol without them they only have Angkor 😂
@@GradientHeavensdid Cambodia do something to hurt you? What made you so mad at them? Instead of talking down on other countries be optimistic for them.
@@GradientHeavens dude, go to see something about Kun Khmer in Angkor Wat's wall. Do you think Thailand, Siam or fake Muay Thai any of them was hatched before Angkor building? Don't be so primitive, animal. 😂😂😂
Don’t feel bad lad. There are greater fools in the world. Australia will be paying $300 billion plus for half a dozen submarines to fight an imaginary enemy.
most colonised nations have been struggling to this day blame the europeans. When they stopped colonising they installed worst economic models on this nation so they wont get out of debt
And here in the UK apparently we're too poor to build a few hundred miles of rail lines....😂 What a horrible mismanagement of our money by these constantly greedy self-serving politicians
@@Hession0Drasha But their network was pretty poor historically. They have been playing catch up and only recently overtaking us. We have more legacy rail infrastructure (per square mile) than pretty much any other country, because we got their first. Our system seems "bad" because it's old, whereas other countries had nothing, and only now are they building brand new stuff where nothing previously existed. It's not easy to make a direct comparison. We are probably most similar to a country like Germany, and they have similar issues with building high speed lines (although they are still better at it than us).
One problem - Cambodia doesn't have a big national airline with the fleet or capacity to connect wider regions. If they really aim to emulate Dubai or Singapore by 2050, then this is one thing they'll really have to invest into.
everything is built by china! the announced numbers about cambodia's capacity are a huge question mark :)) anyway i still hope that their people are taken care of more than big projects that fall into debt traps
Agreed. Singapore, Qatar, Hong Kong and the UAE all had well respected international airlines before they built their massive hub airports. Cambodia doesn't have one (yet). They will need to really push hard with their airline/s to compete against these giants. Also Hong Kong had a strong finance industry and the middle east had oil money. Not too sure about Singapore, but I know my Dad travelled there for work back in the 80s, so has been a serious business destination for a long time.
Having lived in PP for over a year I'm not surprised. Hoping for the best possible outcome for all friends and colleges in PP and the rest of Cambodia!
A nice airport is going to make Cambodia the next Singapore, riiiiiiiiiight... Edit: this isn't the first time this channel has resorted to ridiculous clickbait titles, it's become very common recently. One more and I'm just blocking the channel from my feed
As a Singaporean, it's amazing to see Cambodia taking a page out of Lee Kuan Yew's book. Airport is the first and foremost impression of the country. This will help Cambodia attract businesses to flow in and generate more jobs for Cambodians.
Love Cambodia it’s a beautiful country already in the architecture, ancient temples and design, the history is so sad so they deserve some success and happiness.
Title is senseless - aspiring is one thing, but Cambodia has a lot of harsh realities to face before they can compete with the likes of Thailand, never mind Singapore. Cambodia is a beautiful country with great people, and this is a step in the right direction
@@dexterford8094 I'm not sure what a sensible, better alternative would look like for Cambodia. As long as it's something that gives them a kick-start, rather than using China to prop them up long term, then great. There's a lot of exaggerated Sinophobia from Western perspectives.
@@nice1fam .... Cambodia has had a lot of bad luck in its history so I do hope they will get some real benefit from this rather than just being used by the Chinese like so many other places have been.
Kampuchea is forging its own path. Are there things it can learn from other countries? Of course, including Singapore. With this new airport Kampuchea is hoping to fuel the growth of its economy by providing a world class facility. The country needs it.
from what I searched the word Techo in their local language refers to a person with high societal rank especially in the army. If you wonder why everything is named Techo in the country, think of it as the “Turkmenbashi” but instead of Turkmenistan, it’s south east asia instead.
That airport looks absolutely amazing. Another one that follow this style of architecture will be Poland's Central Communication Hub (CPK) located around 35km west of Warsaw. Can You do a video on it?
I don't know if I missed it but what would the temperature be where the humans are? If it was -10°F that would make it 94°F, still a pretty miserable temperature. Anyways good for the environment!
Been keeping track of this building for years now. I remember the renders back 6 years ago before my daughter was born. It look similar to the one in China.
Its nice to see Cambodia making an effort to further improve its country in the economy sector but to compare it to the level of Singapore? Now that's too huge of a margin...I doubt Cambodia can ever reach the level of success Singapore is at. The effort Singapore put in is phenomenal to get where it is today, and an airport being built definitely will not change anything if its compared to Singapore
Just to add for better context: Cambodia recently opened the new Siem Reap Airport. Also hoping that there will be better city-to-airport link with this one - the motorway connecting the current Phnom Penh Airport and the city is always congested...
That's why I hopped the local bus and relaxed until I saw the river . The new Siem Reap airport is WAY too far out of town . It was built by and for Chinese purposes
Agree with comments…it’s more about how an airport can transform a nation when done well AND supporter with an airline (Singapore Air, Emirates, Etihad, etc). Luv the channel! ❤
Macau's main income comes from all the taxes that the casinos pay. During the pandemic Macau closed its borders and the casinos basically went into limp mode. Meaning the the economy practically collapsed in Macau. Though the government had such a large stack of money that they kept people in the country* happy with stimulus packages and yearly pay outs of money. This meant of course that the economy on paper collapsed even more. Though after Macau opened again to the rest of the world the economy quite quickly jumped back into high gear. Tourists are flowing back into Macau now and therefore the tax dollars to the government is also flowing back in again. Basically the economy of Macau is simply returning to where it should be and quickly. Therefore the 27% increase. It will slow down as soon as the economy more or less gets back to the 2019 level and returns to normal growth.
Singapore has been so successful thanks in part to the incredible reputation of its flag carrier Singapore Airlines. Not sure whether Cambodia can match this regardless of any fancy new airport.
even though I dont study or work in a field closely even related to construction im so interested in cool building projects, this channel is a blessing
since when singapore was poor? since the early 1900s, singapore have been the economic centre of south east asia as british colony and outpost.. i am not sure of the LKY quote, but for comparison, singapore gdp per capita in 1960 was higher than south korea and cambodia COMBINED.. you clearly have to watch P Ramlee movies to get a sense of how singapore was in 1950/60s
This is very concerning. What sort of debt are they undertaking to build this and who are they indebted to? Are visitor arrivals to the capital able to sustain this airport? Last I checked their visitor arrivals decreased. I feel like this is a terrible debt trap for the future generations of Cambodia.
@@darkboard5556 Try as hard as you might, you can’t stop me from speaking my mind. It’s one of the poorest countries in Asia. Building a multi-billion dollar money sucking airport when its economy isn’t sufficiently developed is really bad for future generations. Its arrivals are a mere fraction of its Southeast Asian neighbours. The airport isn’t going to make the economy, it’s supposed to be other way round.
Nice video. Great technical details of the design and build. Of course the "master-plan" idea might not pan out - and that seems the sticking point of most of the comments. But I would rather be hopeful of the future and resurgence of countries in the region, like Cambodia. I like the "big infrastructure" focus of this channel. Thanks!
Claiming Cambodia to be the next Singapore on the basis of an airport? How stupid can one be? Nothing against Cambodia but that country is corrupted to the core and poverty is rife. Unless those 2 issues are being fixed, no way can Cambodia be the next Singapore. Once again, no hate against Cambodia.
I am baffled why Cambodia built this airport when during this month’s holiday, the old airport is not even full of flights and people. Good luck on that
Am I the only one who would come to a tropical country's main airport, see a lot of greenery and think "insects...they have the WORST insects here"? Not quite a phobia but greenery doesn't exist without them, right!? I love the tropics but God, could I do with fewer or smaller insects...the greenery immediately reminds me😅
I live in Singapore. All this greenery are in air-conditioned, controlled environments (at least the ones in Singapore). They are well looked after and are not actually wild. I have not encountered any disturbing insects in these environments. :) You can always use insect repellent. ;)
@@Nice-Biscuit i kinda can't use that or at least it won't work on me^^ Sure, nature, make the guy who hates them actually attract insects like a streetlight. Thanks for that. Thank you, anyway, that really helps :)
@@YeeSoest In Singapore you can buy insect repellent patches to stick on clothes. It's used a lot for children. Maybe you can try that if you ever visit. :) Changi Airport and Jewel, the 2 Domes at Gardens by the Bay are safe places where manicured tropical nature can be enjoyed sans insects. Unless you go look for them. XD
Imagine if we could build something like this airport here in America for just $1.2 billion dollars. They spend more on NFL football stadiums than they did on this airport.
"Temperatures in PP frequently rise as high as 40 degrees". They really don't. Average highs are 34, average is 31, which is really - you don't need to exaggerate.
The ‘mega project solution’ is a phrase I’ve now coined. You can’t ‘build it and they will come’ until the wider economy is prosperous to a certain extent. Exactly like Egypt are doing, and how China have done across the country building ghost cities. This looks great, but it’s also landing in the same category as those other mega projects in areas that don’t yet have the infrastructure already and local economy already to support it. Dubai and Singapore managed it because of heaps of money that didn’t dry up before the tipping point. Good luck to them and all, but I can’t help but see a pattern
Nearly three quarters of the population still live on less than US$3 a day, based on World Bank's data. Poverty is largely concentrated in the rural areas though urban poverty is also on the rise. I wonder who this project will help.
Would need a schengen style agreement in ASEAN, to really meet its potential. It cannot just rely on chinese tourist travel. To break out of the middle income bracket, it'd need a robust business travel market too.
Siem Reap also has a huge new airport about 50km from the city when it already had a perfectly functioning one much closer. When I was there earlier this year there were only 3 flights in the new airport. It is just another potential Chinese military base.
Next Singapore? sure fastest growing economy but Transportation masterplan speaking still way behind what Singapore did since 1970s and 1980s Don't get too clickbaity with this
