So are we forgetting this also effects counter spells? Negate is 1 blue. All those craptastic 1UU counter spells now turn into a reg counterspell with additional benefits but same cost. Also spells cost 1 more to counter for opponents. Thats the hidden ability lol Edit: im dumb and said 1BB like a dummy dumb dumb

Pretty sure marshals Anthem doesn't work, as it's an etb trigger that's targeting and not the spell itself. If my understanding is accurate hinata only discounts instant, sorcery, and aura spells with targets

@@ML7WL spells only have targets on the stack, and triggers making targets are not the same as spells making them. The reason this card can discount targeting spells is because you put a spell on the stack declaring targets, then pay the cost for the spell. Putting a creature with an etb on the stack doesn't prompt its controller to declare targets, only after the creature enters the battlefield does the ability go on the stack. Unless there's a translation error, this card won't discount permanents with enters the battlefield triggers that target.

I’m excited for this one. There’s a fair number of ways you can build a deck around this. Also it can be pretty powerful as you’ve mentioned. You could play return the ranks with small creatures, tap down strategy with icy blast/gridlock, or big creatures with open to wonder and indomitable creativity.

The big weakness with most of the cards you mentioned is that they become incredibly costly if you can't keep Hinata on the field. I feel Hinata is one of those commanders that needs to stay on the field to keep your deck going, and your opponents will be trying really hard to make sure that doesn't happen.

Good thing Hinata costs only 4 CMC and gives you access to blue. Being able to cast her early and burn/counter threats at a discount means you might not have to recast her too often.

Yep. Because of the large number of X spell-boardwipes this commander will never let its opponents have a board, an countering the boardwipes is now more expensive.

@@Jaxx006 No it won't. Marshal's Anthem doesn't have any targets when you cast it, so you won't get a discount on it. It only triggers and forces you to choose targets when it hits the battlefield, at which point the spell has long since resolved. Hinata does not work at all with Marshal's Anthem. Full stop.

Almsot wish it didn’t have the tax effect. That’s really what’s gonna get you targeted. Casting huge stuff is one thing. Not letting others cast huge stuff brings the salt

Exactly. That cost reduction makes it a fun commander to build around. That cost tax makes it annoying to play against and you get hated out of the game. The same exact thing that turned Leovold from a potential favourite of mine into a commander horror story. I fear this turns out the same.

@@eliamagri7413 Eh, close enough. Either of those decks competently built and piloted ain't letting the opponent play the game. Only difference is that with Leovold, you wont have a hand and with Hinata, you wont have any permanents.

@@qwormuli77 my pod is proxy friendly and they let me brew this up. Turn 4 I put everyone's nonland permanents back in their hands, basically putting everyone back to t1. Untapped all my permanents, then Soulfired into a combo win next turn but touching everyone with Aurelia's before doing anything else. With the way they've been banning "unfun" commanders, Hinata is not long for this world.

I plan on running Orvar and Feather in the 99 for all of the targeting synergy! Also...correct me if I'm wrong but I think all taxing effects will fire off first and then cost reduction. So we can run stuff like Thalia and still have cards like Eerie Interlude cost 1 white. Side note, trinisphere applies after cost increase and decrease are applied.

@@AricinGrey can you please explain the synergy/ies with Zada and Hinata? Say a 1R cantrip spell, or an X spell? Maybe something I don't see? Do Zada's copies help reduce the cost of the initial spell targeting Zada if Hinata is out?

@@enriquesoul5370 I don't think so, but Zada will still let you copy the spell effect if it targets Zada. Figured if Orvar and Feather are in the deck, the goal is to target your own creatures, Zada is great for that.

The commander isn't really what's broken, it is an enabler, it is what breaks things and to be honest with you, its a design i will gladly welcome, i feel it is very unique in what it does and nowhere as annoying as Arbiter, since its not even a "universal tax effect" but only a especific tax

Seems like this would make a pretty toxic artifact storm deck, utilising stuff like Frantic Salvage, Paradoxical Outcome, Reality Spasm, Dance of the Manse, etc to pop off in one turn, while stuff such as the new 'March of' cards, Heliod's Intervention, Winter's Chill, Volcanic Eruption etc make the boardstate very easy to control.

I feel like this will be used and abused in couterspell heavy decks TBH, making mana leak type counterspell that much more effective (by making them cheaper to you and making spells more expensive to opponents).

I am so excited for this one. Definitely making this. Imagine Casting a Rolling Thunder or an Aurelia’s Fury targeting as many things as possible, and then copying it to throw that massive free X straight to someones face (I assume this works as copying an X spell keeps the value of X and most copy spells allow you to choose new targets? Correct me if I’m wrong)

The number and division of targets can't change but what it actually targets can. So if you're doing 1 damage to 10 things and you copy, you'll have to select 10 targets with 1 damage. Same if you're doing 5 damage split between any number of targets, that division of damage will still be the same but with new targets.

This was my promo card at Prerelease night. I managed to build the deck around her (using all 7 of my rares). Best of all, I actually *drew* Hinata. Needless to say, those games were in the bag XD. Can’t wait to build her a 100 card deck. For anyone else doing that, consider including Battlefield Thaumaturge. He has a very similar ability.

That's why you play a lot of 2 mana counter spells that turn into 1 mana counter spells because you have to protect this commander in order to stay in the game.

I don't know how many people pointed this out yet, but Marshal's Anthem doesn't actually work at all with Hinata since it doesn't target when the spell is on the stack. It resolves and enters the battlefield, at which point you already need to have payed the mana costs. Then the ability goes on the stack which does the targeting.

This card is a trap, it's too powerful, just like similar commanders like Tergrid players will be keeping an eye out for it so they can remove it instantly. I don't think building it is wise unless your playgroup is already borderline cedh.

Okay so stop saying “BROKEN or BUSTED” to just get views….it’s not Skullclamp, or Moxen. Firstly, It’s GOOD, there’s a difference. Secondly, if you build around it with booty cards (like every other commander) it gets really amazing. But to cast a 4/4 for 4 of 3 separate colors isn’t happening without a God Draw and T3 maybe T2 then it sits for 3 other players to bounce, kill or target you…..

ummmmmm.... non-legendary duplicates- or wait- the new replacement for mirror gallery is in the same set.... copies- so much reduction on so many spells that cost so much more for multiple targets... so much taxing your opponent to target ANYTHING! I'm surprised that Crackle with Power wasn't mentioned. It goes from XXX{R}{R} to XX{R}{R} for deal five times X damage to up to X targets. 4 mana deal 5 to 1, 6 mana deal 10 to 2, 8 mana deal 15 to 3, 10 mana deal 20 to 4... it already has disgusting scaling with discount decks. Discounting it *per target* makes it absolutely gross.

Anyone who knows magic well enough will not care if you put Grand arbiter in a Hinata deck, assuming they don't mind playing against it. They already know it's broken. They know what they are getting themselves into. This is only a new player problem, but we have rule 0 for a reason, so please use it guys!!!

How do you know how many targets Crush Contraband will have, if you have to pay before you select your targets, since selecting targets is part of resolving the card? Am I wrong in some way?? Does Wizards just has no idea what they're printing anymore?

Played a tabletop commander game with friends and one of them brought this bad boy to the table and it wrecked us... this card is ridiculous and even more so when you can just sublime epiphany for 2 blue... kinda stupid. Dude had a board state of 2 esper sentinels, GAAIV, Hinata, and other supporting pieces. It wasn't fun anymore and another player could even figure out if GAAIV or Hinata was the right thing to destroy when they had the chance. This card has a weird rampy tone to it that makes it hard to interact with.

Dance of the Manse is better than just "return everything". It allows you to return everything AS 4/4 CREATURES, as casting it with x=6 is pretty easy that way.

Would something that says "each" get a reduction or no? Because if so Deafening Clarion becomes a 2 drop for 1 red and 1 white that could board wipe depending on the creatures in play or give all your creatures lifelink. If not then i guess i know one card i wont be using

Are we sure Hinata works for Miltikicker? Marshall's Anthem at least does not have targets on casting, targets are when it enters the battlefield. I think you would have to pay full cost on that...

She is not that broken. Not many players plays target spells targetting more than 2 targets. And that cheapening... I mean. It is kinda fine. But eh. Every commander has something. At the end of the day. She is fun commander to play and not really that bad to play against.

Doesn't work on Wrath effects, activated abilities, or creatures without comes into play effects that target a creature. Yeah, Hinata has a lot of good synergies, but I think it has plenty of weaknesses. Not to mention the mirror match is a complete wash.

It's so fun to have Hinata, Kykar and Feather, the Redeemed on board and Use Aether Gale and Target a spirit token, then sac it to pay for another spell, then bounce the Aether Gale back to hand.

Am I crazy? Marshal’s Anthem is an ETB trigger. You don’t choose targets as you cast it so it doesn’t work.

It is important to note that comet storm already targets something. This is the spell i see most people fuck up. You get the additional 1 for the mana cost reduction and then each multikicker is free. Meaning if you want to deal 5 damage to each, then comet storm cost 4RR then each multikicker is free.

Marshal's Anthem doesn't work. The targeting happens after the enchantment is on the battlefield as an "ETB" effect. It's not part of the spell. Targets don't get declared as an enchantment gets cast.

This effect is surprisingly powerful, however this effect comes with an inherent downside in commander, the opponent with the most removal will feel how powerful it is and make sure you have a hard time keeping it, in my experience you don't not want to be on the bad side of the opponent who packs the most removal, you want to seem innocent enough until you can take them out.

Marshals Anthem trigger is an entered the battlefield trigger, so you target the creatures then, not during the casting, so I don't believe Hinatas ability applies.

Battlefield thurmaturge is cooler. People will kill Hinata a lot. Battlefield thurmaturge almost never gets removed

Im pretty sure mana reduction lowers the casting cost on cast so its not both big and small while on the stack.

This seems good, but it doesnt come off broken. Kilian does more cost reduction and no tax. Though it is limited to two colors. Also for me I'm not mad at arbiter, well until the other taxes comes come into play lol.

I don’t know. It seems stupidly broken. It’s a one sided tax for your opponents while also discounting the majority of relevant spells in the game. Counterspells, spot removal, reanimation, auras you name it. Most interaction is affected by this card while enabling some insane combos for yourself. This easily has cedh potential.

@@commodore7838 I say this deck go to cedh, but my mind says at best this is 7 or 8. With my decks I'm mainly using equipments and creatures. So this strat is not too concerning for me. My aura decks would be annoyed, but I play cost reductions with those anyways, so I would be just set back to normal and not late.
