I was extremely privileged to be able to dive with the current World & Italian spearfishing champion, Giacomo De Mola in Greece this winter. Known as one of the best deep divers in the world he has perfected this art over the past 25 years. It is certainly not without risk and in this video we discuss some things that could save your life.

Been "fighting" anti "no snorkel in" for ages. Finally a great champion talk about and hopefully open minds and understand why everthing in freediving can not apply to spearfishing.
@genieoner
@genieoner Год назад
Do not listen to this advice. Competitors know how to catch fish, but they know shit about anatomy or how human body behaves. Always take snorkel out. Your throat is then closed. If you have snorkel in your mouth- your throat is wide open. If you BO- you will get your lungs full of water.
@DanielMann
@DanielMann Год назад
My throat is closed by my glottis no? It’s the reason I can open my mouth underwater and not have lungs full of air. How is it any different?
@maximeblondel90
@maximeblondel90 Год назад
You don't need to have your mouth shut to isolate your airway from water. Other wise in rescue (first aid level) you would not be thought to tilt the head back to open them. Think you really need to refresh your anatomy. Can you remind us what's happen during a black out?

Thanks, DMann! I have always kept my snorkel in my mouth for the exact same reason. I love hearing more about technique and gun/gear/suit (especially feet in cold water!) Setups. I dive cold New England murk all year so my technique might differ from Mediterranean, Polynesian, Nordic divers, but we all can learn from each other. I HIGHLY advise using a moderately heavy neck weight as this has not only made my DD/descents more efficient, but since it's the highest weight during ascent it becomes the lightest weight the quickest. Was diving yesterday 03/25/23 in 5° water 3° air decent viz to apx 6m with snow clouds rolling in in the afternoon. I can't seem to get my feet system right as I constantly have to head to shore and spend 40min stomping them out every hour or so. Currently using triathlon socks, 3mm OMER, layer of Lycra sock, and a 7mm Yazbeck. Although they fit, I think my foot pockets are too small and it's restricting blood flow causing the feet to get cold. Curious to hear how you set up your feet diving in cold waters. Much love from the North Shore!
@DanielMann
@DanielMann Год назад
Hey Anon, sounds extreme! When I dived in Norway last year in similar conditions I used immersion 9mm socks. Important thing is to have them a size bigger than you think. When they are thick like that they can really restrict blood flow. Yes there was water sloshing around in them but I never once had cold feed. Wear the socks around the house for an hour and you’ll soon find out if it’s the cold or the constriction from the neoprene 👌

I'd never really thought about that reasoning for keeping the snorkel in your mouth. I guess it also serves as a reminder to make sure you watch your mates well after they have surfaced from a dive as a blackout on the surface when no one is watching is just as if not more dangerous than one at 3m.

Absolutely Fascinating Minute 10 on regarding the retention of the snorkel. There seems to be logic there. The question of laryngeal reflex automatically occurring without water intrusion as protective mechanism. It would make for a fascinating study to see if the activation of the mammalian dive reflex accentuates the laryngeal reflex. Also there could be an additional benefit to retaining the snorkel....... There is another reflex that is directly related and tied to the Mammalian dive reflex. It is call the Trigeminal Cardiogenic Reflex. It is that reflex that keeps the heart rate from going tachycardia when obstructive sleep apnea occurs. Perhaps the sustained jaw position /clenching to retain the snorkel at depth is of physiologic value to assist lower heart rate. Great Video. Thank you for sharing this very excellent topic of contemplation and research. Cheers Daniel.

Loved this vid Daniel. Well done and thanks to all involved👌 I always used to dive with snorkel in mouth as it’s more suitable for rough South African conditions. I switched about 15 years ago and i find it feels more relaxed in the mouth. Now days I use a bit of a hybrid technique and keep snorkel in mouth in rough conditions - you don’t want the snorkel waving about or washing away when hunting musselcracker! The logic behind keeping it in the mouth does seem sound for spearfisherman. Often blackout occurs on the surface if incorrect breathing is used 👍

nice video as always ! About the snorkel in the mouth, so many different POV in that regard. Stefan Mifsuf (current static apnea world record and brilliant free diver to whom -50 is classic) says the exact opposite. Basically if you blackout at the surface and stand still, the weight on your back will make you turn so your mouth faces the sky. Anyway hope none of us will experience black out ! like ever ahah!

Another technique exists with the snorkel: you remove it in the dive as per usual, on accent in the last meter you insert the snorkel in the mount (under the water) and make exhale to remove all water from the snorkel, right before the surface. The technic is not an easy but worth it.

Unfortunately i can't agree ablut the snorkel thing. Its true that in freediving the most common blackout occur in the top level of water but it can also happen while struggling with a fish at the bottom. Just this year we had a spearo who lost his life that way in israel. (We are not sure but the estimates was that he fought whith a grouper because they found his gun and shaft stuck in a hole. For me when i'm going up from an exhausting dive in the last 2/3 meters i'm turning chest side up to a position that if i'll pass out i'll be on my back.
@DanielMann
@DanielMann Год назад
I don’t think it’s very common to black out on the bottom, very rare cases. I’ve extracted a few groupers and the problem isn’t on the bottom it’s coming back up. Also most guys that black out and are saved have no idea what happened and if they were going to black out. It would be very difficult to know you’re in trouble in the last 2m and then somehow slow the ascent to turn belly up. Each to their own though. Easier not to push yourself to the limit.
