Hi Merlin, I do love a bit of Multi-Axis Action at 5.4 minutes in - spent many hours on a 5 Axis CNC machining center until I retired at 55 - As I just had enough of work.. Love your content, along with your cousins and one-time race mate Mat the recovery.. All of you good guys doing your own thing and making guys like me smile so thank you. being British we are used to Diesel power in our vehicles as a normal thing from the factory.- Thanks - Ian - UK.
Thanks for taken us through the machine shop and some processes they do to your Cummings head....very cool👍👍. Looking foward to the engine build. Stay safe Merlin and thanks for sharing.
Merlin Motors ! Enjoy your striving for perfection and performance , using new technologies , full appreciation of the incredible skills of our forefathers and your dislike of waste . Greetings from 🇬🇧 , the original home of your ancient name !
This is the stuff school won't teach you about. Trades are always in demand, most pay pretty well and you if it's something you enjoy the pride is unleveled
I told both my kids that . If you don't want to go to school you better learn how to do something that everyone else can't do. Learn a trade you may not get rich but you will always find work and pay your bills
WOW highly educational Merlin can't wait to see the CUMMINS boat flying again . Your knowledge is mind blowing but can't wait for Dr Frankenstein to get back is his garage creating again. Loved the Shermans memorial ❤ at FABRATS shack. They never showed it I thank you. I really enjoy your videos
Merlin mannn I feel I learn so much watching your videos! You have all access to the machine shops and all! That kid is a beast I’ll bet he can calibrate an engine by listening to it by now! I also love when you and Paul get together he’s another favorite guy of mines! Would love to buy you guys a beer next time you guys are passing thru Las Vegas! Best wishes and God Speed!💯✌🏾👊🏾👊🏾🙏🏾
They breathe souch better with the runner chopped off and the head fully ported. That intake runner restricts the head so much but any improvements to air flow really wakes up the 5.9 engine❤❤ and yeah if you do any real power I suggest upgrading all the freeze plugs and installing the coolant bypass so that cylinder 6 gets better cooling, that's usually the cylinder that goes when they let loose because the coolant can't flow around number 6 as good, so it gets hotter
Very educational to watch the work being done on your cylinder head. I have heard about things that can be done but this was much like a in person walk thru. The extent of explanation was awesome to see. Great information!
Very interesting video!! Those boys are taking a lot of pride in their work!! Not every machine shop goes the extra mile to make sure everything is machined to the exacting tolerances that they do. Results are what maters and those guys are sure to get great results!! I'll bet Landon will be tickled to death to finally get his engine back and running!!!
Wow, that's impressive work on the head. I used to build race engines a looong time ago and all the porting was done by hand, CNC would save a heap of time.
Wow, I tried my hand, at mild head porting, when I was younger. Getting each and every one of those ports identical was not a pleasant experience. This 3D CNC machining is amazing.
Wow ! I replaced the Head on my 98 Dooley. Every Cylinder had at least .2 cracks in the head. Threw the Belt 45 miles from San Angelo Tx. Repaired that mess in town the next day. Limped it to San Antonio Tx. Picked up my Sister . Went to the Grand Canyon and then back to So. Cal. Adding Coolant all the way back. External Leak ! Did the repairs locally. It's only money. Interesting process ! Much harder than Aluminum for sure ! Going to be a runner ! If I ever do a head again ? "hope not" I will use these guys !
Ohhh cmon I wanted hear your knowledge on crude oil. Granted I can look it up but a person of stature sharing thier personal intellect is so much more entertaining than just reading the facts. Thank you for sharing your trip thru the machine shop!
Thanks for the tour of the machine shop, I’ve built a lot of motors and all I had was a magnafluxing unit to test the cast iron heads before sending them to the machine shop so they could work their magic. I did work in a auto repair shop shop where we did grind our own valves and cut the seats on a simple valve job without any issues to the castings. It was interesting to see the CNC doing the porting on the head. I’ve built several Harleys and put ported heads on them from a shop in Colorado that did a very nice job on the porting.
I have only seen this type of porting done manually by Rotary Engine guys getting the largest and smoothest intake air flow into their turbo-charged Rotary Engines. It's so cool to see this automated.
Great 👍Content Even a relative most won't let you see the total amount of time that's put in, Great of Justin to allow you to hangout, even though you are Family Have a Great Day 👍and God Bless America 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Good lord! It doesn't take nearly as long to port and gasket match, like it used to! All them digital thing-a-ma-jigs, cut the time down a shit ton! I ported and gasket matched a set of SBC heads back in my 20's. I had prolly 100 hrs in them....!
This is a really cool video! You were just about to talk about the difference between Pennsylvania crude and others, and then went into time-lapse mode. I'd sure like to hear about that!
that was a great video ..love the process that the head go's threw .. so what could you do for a CJ7 1981 .. straight 6cyl .. with a t5 5 speed .. lol found a hunk of a lock washer in the shifter with the offset lever .. shifts hard between 1st and 2nd .. don't know if it's the offset lever or the shift rail bent ,, winter time will have to tear it apart ,, keep up the great videos ..
Love seeing young guys taking pride in there work. Can’t wait to see the bald eagles fly out that head. Question though? Is your wiper motor you and a vice grip?
Im a huge fan of fab ratts channel, But im loving your channel & the depth of your channel. Loved this one they most. Keep up the amazing videos. Cheers from WI.
i blew out a freeze plug on my old 1995 2500 12 valve and the highway, might ruined the motor if it wasnt for the fact it was daylight and i could see the snail trail behind me. Man i love watching your videos, bro you know your stuff thats for goddamn sure. Cheers brother.
If I ever get to visit your neck of the woods, I'd like to drive that thing once, was just bragging on the he Chevy flatbed in Paul's video. I'd like to take the wrecker for a spin too, it's too complicated to choose between the two 😆
That is cool I have never seen a head get CNC ported before but it looks it can do it so much faster then I could do it by hand and it's more accurate and don't have to worry about getting into a coolant passage or anything like that.
Nice video showing the steps taken on custom machining a block .. I’m running a stock 2012 Cummins in my RAM 3500 and currently running like a Rolex watch .. Can’t wait til you get it back in and see what it does .. I have a Lincoln 460 built in my ‘67 Cheetah jet boat .. it’s a screamer .. has NO2 on it just for kicks … that much power in a 19’er can be a lil spine tingling…
Merlin, you've raised a question in my pointed little brain... I've learned over the years that a 4-valve cylinder of similar size will flow more air than a 2-valve but I've also heard from many others before Paul dragged my attention to your channel, that they hold the 12 valve Cummins in pretty high regard. What is distinctive in this Cummins motor that isn't typical in most other 2 valve heads? Thanks for a very informative break from "real life." There's too much stuff out there that needs to get done... just not quite yet! 👍
neat bit of kit Ive done a bit of hand ginding and then polishing of the ports for my rally car polished ports in the head and the manifold would give a couple of extra horses on the dyno a little better fuel running a webber DCOE side draft
That's interesting! You have all the potential to make your channel to blow up! That's what I think: if you turn your contents less casual and more organized, if you let the people be more involved in your "personal" life and if you believe a little more in this channel you can rip the asses off a lot of other content creators. It's about your vision and effort. By the way, I like what you do. Really. Those were just tips
Back when I as doing pressure testing on components the water tank was heated to operating temp the part was allowed to soak for several hours or even overnight.
would love to have a performance head or 5 but can't quite justify the cost I'm sure! Have a built 24V with a Hamilton cam & built Ppump that should be fun.
