In an alternate universe we named Washington state “Columbia” and as a result, the people in that universe refer to Washington D.C as “District of Columbia” so it’s still just as confusing.

It’s actually so dumb cause that makes way more sense now, folks used to just call it the District of Columbia more than Washington and they didn’t want it to be confused, but as far as the state goes the one thing everyone knew about it and where everyone lived on it was the Columbia River. It makes so much more sense. And given we never got Franklin or Lincoln it stands out.

as a native arabic speaker, you can understand about 50% of country's dialect (we are not talking about the official arabic language we learn in school. that one is the exact same in all the countries and we all understand it. but no one uses is in their day to day life). you can understand a bit more than that if the person you are speaking to is from the country directly bordering you, or if you had been under the control of a similar colonial power, since we have a lot of words derived from eureopean languages and there is the issue with words derived from native languages,like berber and amazighi in north africa for instance. this one in particular puts you in the funny situation where people from the same country might sometimes not understand each other. for instance in Tunisia, i'm from the north west, and i had a situation in uni with a classmate from the south and another group from the east / north east, and we found out people from those 2 areas couldn't understand a lot of words used in more rural areas or regions in the interior, since us in the interior regions had more berber / amazighi influence

5:50 let me explain this part of the video, The Arabic-speaking world is divided into two parts: the western part, known as the Maghreb, consists of Berbers/Amazighs who have adopted Arabic as their language. In this region, everyone can understand each other. The eastern part is also mostly mutually intelligible within itself, but cannot understand the Maghreb, except for the Levant. However, the Maghreb can understand the eastern part, primarily due to the fact that the eastern part, especially Egypt, is the center of production for movies and TV shows in the Arabic world, much like Hollywood.
@creeperboy6453
@creeperboy6453 Год назад
A better explanation is the fact that arabic is a macro-language that's only regarded as one by cultural reasons, its dialects are pretty much different from each other. The case of bosnian, serbian, croatian and montenegrin is by political disputes and the fact that croatian is written in the latin alphabet whereas the rest of these languages are written in the cyrillic alphabet, something that plays a more important role than what you might expect in the division of these dialects, as it's the same barrer that divides urdu and hindi or that once divided mozarabic and spanish. Montenegrin is probably the least individual language of these as it's just the western serbian dialect without changes at all, they just claim to speak a different language by no reason.
@salemabiad9475
@salemabiad9475 Год назад
@@creeperboy6453 I know all of that, but thank you for your explanation. Some languages are not that different from each other, like Swedish and Norwegian. You could even consider them to be two dialects of the same language. However, some dialects are so different that you could even consider them to be two different languages, like the Moroccan dialect and the Egyptian dialect.

Can barely understand the older generation of rural Palestinians, the dialects mixed up later after the invasion, since I grew up in the city, I sound almost the same as Palestinians who live in Jordan with some differences in certain words. The difference in origin and colonists affected our dialects a bit. Syria and Lebanon by the french, Jordan and Palestine by the English. As time went by, Hindi (written in devnagari script) accumulated more and more words from Sanskrit/Vedic while Urdu, written in Arabic, accumulated more and more from Arabic. Side note: In Pakistani soap opera, they use a constructed variant of Udru with many more Persian words when depicting historical events, while in Indian soap opera, they use a constructed version of Hindi with many more Sanskrit words. Grounded truth is Hindi and Urdu are essentially the same language constructed by and for the people, just written in different scripts

@@homomilleumbrae As mentioned in first sentence, it's a a diluted statement/gist that I wrote. And I never claimed that Hindi or Urdu is derived from Persian. As I see it, Persian was the language of the royal court while Hindi and Urdu evolved to bridge between what's spoken in the streets and what's spoken at royal chambers. Also, the idea of one language being a child of another is not the right way of seeing things, or so I think. So stating Prakrit came from Sanskrit makes it look like Prakrit is some form of inferior form of Sanskrit, which it wasn't/isn't. When speaking about languages, we cannot overlook nuances like regional and cultural influences given most languages that are in use in India have a continuum with one "standard" form.
@homomilleumbrae
@homomilleumbrae Год назад
@@Sandeepan I get what you are trying to say My point was that even though there was a huge influence of Persian on vernacular languages , they were still very much descendents of prakrit . Say for example English . English is classified as a Germanic language . Germanic languages descend from proto Germanic . But after william conquered England , English started absorbing French influences , French being A romance languages . The influence was so huge that in today's date . almost half of English vocabulary has origins in French . But despite that , English is still a Germanic language , its because it still has a very Germanic syntax And grammer Similarly, Hindi , despite the Persian influence , is still a member of the prakrit lineage . I Hope we are clear now

@@homomilleumbrae I'm agreeing with facts of your statement, such as "X language have significant number of words in its vocabulary from Y language" But I disagree with any statement like "X language came from Y" Both Persian and Vedic can trace it's root to proto Indio Iranian, and Sanskrit is just a locked down/standardized form of Vedic (hence Sankrit), while the uregulated form of Vedic evolved and branched into many north Indian languages... We both know these facts. To me, "Bengali came from Eastern Magadhi" and "Bengali belongs to Eastern Magadhi" are two completely different standpoint, and the former is kinda infuriating. I basically reject both of these statements: "Hindi came from Prakrit" and "Hindi came from Persian" "Hindi/Urdu constructed/evolved to bridge between language of the people and language of the royal court" feels like something that captures small nuances and stays respectful to the regional adaptations and variants (although I do not like to use the word variant in any context) ... I hope this makes my stand clear. I consider language to be the key identity and I've seen fractures along linguistic lines. That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid here.

As a native speaker of arabic, thr hardest thing about different dialects is the loan words that are a result of different colonial powers, and different native non-arab tribes that merged with the arabs. (for example if you understand french (colonial) and amazigh (native) as well as modern standard arabic you can easily learn the maghrebi dialect within a few days of exposure.

Drew, while may have trouble understanding different Arabic accents, the differences between Arabic dialects is greater. In addition, the language meme you commented on was referring to Arabic dialects, more than it was referring to the different Arabic accents.
