It also goes a lot deeper than this. The Spanish team were already deeply unhappy with their coach and wanted him removed but the Spanish football federation refused. Rubiales has now offered the coach a 3 year contract even amidst his controversy. This isn’t an issue with just one guy, it’s the whole management.

for some additional context: 15 spanish players walked out on the team recently after luis rubiales' federation made their private concerns public. the players were unhappy with the coach, jorge vilda. his training sessions, his injury recovery practices, the nutritionists on his team, even the transportation provided to the players, all of it was completely inadequate. instead of addressing these concerns, the federation publicly labelled these players as traitors. 3 of the 15 were in the world cup, and huge names like mapi leon stayed home. jorge vilda was applauding rubiales enthusiastically during his unhinged speech, and rubiales promised him a 400k promotion on stage. thankfully that 15 is now 81 signatures and rising. rubiales and vilda are surely gone, and hopefully the spanish women can continue to thrive as they are destined to. a fantastic squad filled with some of the best players in the world.

Missed out on the fact that Spain's football federation put out a completely made-up statement supposedly by the player herself saying that it was consensual and a natural gesture between friends. The guy's insane and needs to go.

Insane that literally anybody is defending this guy at all, but EVERY time I see someone post about this situation there are a bunch weird dudes defending him. Especially on FB and IG.

No one would have believed him if he said "I misread the situation and I was just sooo excited about the win, I'm sorry" but it would have endet like 99% of this backlash. Which is sad because there are so many problems in the spanish football federation. But he couldn't even do that. Imagine how far removed you have to be from the average person to do this. As someone who lived in Spain for a few years, kissing people on the cheek is very common and would not seem strange to most spaniards. That being said, kissing on the lips is a totally different thing. I can't imagine being in Jenni's position and she deserves to feel safe in her work environment. Sad time for Spain sports.

I'm Australian and a huge football fan so I was at the stadium watching this. I remember at the time mentioning to my friend that it was weird that this dude was picking ppl up and overall being handsy. Then the kiss happened and I was like "who tf is this dude, that's weirdo behaviour" but we thought that suuurely she must have been okay with it since it happened in international tv and he was like literally next to the Spanish queen, right? RIGHT? Nah, he's just a creep. Also as an aside comment, not sure if ppl saw this on tv, but the Spanish coach (who is also a terrible person) got boo'd every time he was on the stadium screens to the point they stopped showing him lmao which was so deserved. Glad Lud is covering this, things will only change if people keep putting pressure on the RFEF.

I watched almost every game of the women’s world cup. Many of Spain’s players chose not to play at all this year in protest of their management, including guys like him. They’ve protesting for over a year I believe. I definitely wondered about the consequences of all these players sitting out this major tournament, and then the squad who kept playing going on to win for the first time. It sure felt like things wouldn’t change after that. Really unfortunate situation.

I watched this live with my mom who lived in Spain for a few years. When it happened I mentioned that he was acting weird with all of them. My mom dismissed it as part of the culture and I just thought, “then their culture is sexist”. My mom can’t believe it turned into such a big deal and even seems upset that she was wrong.. a lot of people aren’t going to like that they were wrong for thinking this was ok.

Whats surprising me is the mental gymnstics some people are displaying to try and excuse this behavior. Like, she even said that she didnt give consent and Rubiales was also groping and fondling other players during the celebration so its not like Rubiales had a close relationship with Hermoso, he is just a creep that exposed his true colors.

An absurd part of this is when he first 'apologised', they falsified a statement by Jenni Hermoso saying that it wasn't a problem at all and she was grateful for what he did for Spanish football. That's why she put out an official statement through her own social media. Hey Lud, just letting you know that there’s also a lot of history with the spanish federation before this. Before the world cup, over half the team had refused to play at the world cup because the Spanish manager was emotionally abusive (and possibly more). There’s been a lot of shady stuff going on for years. Eventually, all but 3 players came back, but I was at a lot of the games in Sydney and there was clear tension between the players and managers. They never interacted with each other, even when they won. So happy for the players, but so devastated for them at the same time.

I normally don't comment but the craziest thing about this situation is that immediately after the initial allegations the Spanish football body published an OFFICIAL STATEMENT TO THE PRESS where Jenni Hermoso was quoted to have said, in essence, "yeah it's all good we're tight what's a kiss between homies". That's what contributed to there being a bit of confusion in the first 24 hours, as even though this guy's clearly a weirdo I guess she said she was ok with it? It was later revealed that she (obviously) said absolutely none of that, and the writers of the statement pulled every single quote attributed to her out of their ass. They literally made up quotes from the victim in officially published statements to try to sweep this under the rug, gave shocked pikachu faces when they were revealed to have made everything up, and are now trying to sue her for lying what a circus lmao

You missed the part about their manager Jorge Vilda also being creepy and nasty, before the World Cup even started. Half of Spain's players were already refusing to play even before the Rubiales situation. The whole of women's football in Spain is so sad. 😕

I think it is telling that so many comments are that if he had said "I'm sorry I got caught up in emotions but even so I shouldn't have done it. It won't happen again." Would have completely negated the issue. While I agree that if he had done that, it probably would have gone away without any other repercussion and wouldn't have even been a footnote in history. However, that is wrong itself. If my boss were to get emotional after a big win at a corporate event, does that mean he can plant one on a woman and then later say "I got caught up in emotions"? Allowing such brazen disregard for consent and women's bodily autonomy on an international stage to go by with just a barebones apology would have been a travesty of justice. If Rubiales had apologized cleanly and clearly that his behavior was unacceptable, it won't happen again and then suspended himself (without pay) for a month (or anything that would go on his record as a disciplinary action) and donated to a women's rights fund or something, I would think that have been the ideal answer once this happened. However, instead they published fake responses from her, doubled down on it, and are now attacking the same women that he assaulted. I honestly wish that Jenni could press charges against him in Australia and have him arrested.
