I’ve been a painter for 30 years you’re absolutely right the paint just didn’t have time to cure just because you can touch paint and it’s dry doesn’t mean it’s cured always always allow time for your paint to cure

Why have you been applying your paint under adverse weather conditions? Never apply paint unless you will have a prolonged stretch of good weather. Both wet and cold weather will lengthen the dry time of all paint products and cause failures. This goes for both water based and solvent/oil based products. At this point you should wait for warm/dry weather and then prep the surfaces by sand blasting, repriming, allow to dry, and then apply finish and allow to dry well in good warm weather. An alternate prep would be to lightly scrape or wire brush. But in all cases allow all coats of paint to dry thoroughly before applying the next coat. The colder and/or wet weather should always be avoided when painting at anytime. Painting just isn’t one thing that can’t be just slipped in between short sells of poor weather conditions at anytime. At least not without adverse or potentially adverse problems in appearance and durability. Best of luck with fixing your problems.

I totally agree with those who pointed out that painting at those cold temps are generally not recommended for good adhesion and especially with the rainy weather that you have had. I also recognize that sometimes you can't always wait for warmer weather when you are trying to get things done. We should educate, not berate. Not all of us are experts. Thanks for your channel!

Paint takes 30 days to cure but is usually film stable after 7 days. However that is at a minimum 50 F and 50 % relative humidity. Anything below that temp or above that humidity will take longer.

the problem with the paint is adhesion, the rain didn't help, but the most important thing to do before painting is always to sand and then clean\de-grease the surface first. I know its not fun sanding something that large because I've sanded large 2 story homes, but it is a very important step. I hope the rest of the paint stays put.......

When you're done pressure washing, let it dry, then sand it to even it out. Use etching primer just on those surfaces to be re-done. Let that dry, then repaint those spots.
@alantorrance6153
@alantorrance6153 Год назад
The danger of not stripping the paint one way or another, is that water will be left behind some of the paint and cause corrosion, as well as long-term bubbling of the paint layers. You are really faced with having to sand and scrape off the affected areas -- quite thoroughly. Then wait for plenty of time to paint and for it to dry before there is any more rain.

I once made a total novice DIY mistake when painting a bathroom. I bought paint and painted it, it looked great until the bathroom got really humid a couple of times and the paint started blistering and sagging on the walls. That was when I learned that you don't put regular paint over oil base paint without some sort of undercoating. I guess we all live and learn.

In the paint stores they'll have a tool called a 5 in one or a 9 in one that works well as a scraper, a paint can opener, a nail remover, it has those round edges you were looking for and has a sharp cornered edge for poking or digging into crevasses. Also you want the paint to "cure", as latex paints generally dries to the touch within a few hours but takes 24 to 48 hours to cure. When doing exteriors I always wait 48 hours before doing a 2nd coat and make sure I'll have 5 days of dry weather before even starting to paint. I don't want customers calling me back 6 months later and I have to do it all again. Hope some of that helps!

Why would the condensation happen below the paint? The moisture that would condensate on a cold surface would be drawn aout of the warmer air, and that air would've been above the paint. How would that water vapour get underneath the paint?

sorry to see that issue! From what I remember it's not just the rain. If it's cold outside (especially on metal) the sun will heat it up the outside but the inside stays somewhat cold & after you paint, the entire thing gets cold again causing condensation/moisture under the paint!
@michaellove9831
@michaellove9831 Год назад
Spencer, Painting is mostly all the prep required, vs the paint application... The area that bubbled up likely had no scuffing for paint to adhere to when the rain infiltrated the damp paint. As you learned, scraping then scuffing before priming is essential. Getting a second spot treat of all distinguishing areas before two full coat of paint to ensure uniformity will help a lot. One full coat or two of primer will help with giving top coat a clean surface with no blemishes.
@matthewmiller4282
@matthewmiller4282 Год назад
I taught that primers job is to promote adhesion. I don’t really think there is a need to scrape or sand or whatever before priming. Those are things you would do if you want to omit the priming step and go straight to top coating. I’m fairly confident they nailed the mode of failure on their own. Insufficient dying time of a water based paint.

I painted my garage and its wood but I did the same mistake.. It was late in the year and was dew on the ground every morning. When I woke up the next morning the paint was dry but had water bubbles under it just like that. I left it alone till spring cause I was upset lol. Came back and scraped it just like you did and brushed primer over it then rolled a whole fresh coat and its been fine since. But I think it was something to do with the temps and the moisture in the air.. Good sunny warm weather is best to paint for sure..

I would just sand it…I started writing that in when Kenzie suggested that in the vlog. You can’t use water for everything. Sanding sometimes is the way to go. I know, it’s a pain in the keister- but, I am sure that you both could just take turns between watching the kids and sanding. 😊 You should be proud of yourselves…the viewers are! ❤ JDI!!! Take a little break and go away for a few days, you deserve it…after you finish that painful task! There is nothing wrong with rewarding yourselves! JDI! You can paint later when it’s warmer and when you have a few good weather days in the forecast ahead. Spencer- (or Spenser)- do not put so much pressure on yourself, seriously. Pick two different days…schedule them apart. The first one Dad will be the first to go out for his massage and then Kenzie and the kids will pick him up for lunch or dinner. A month later, do the same but switch roles for mom. This is a suggestion…why not try.

Wow that was a setback. A couple of suggestions. Get an extension wand for your airless sprayer of 18 to 24 inches. They are only about twenty bucks, and you can stand up without bending over on top, and can paint most or all of the sidewalls standing on the ground again without bending, and only a stepladder to reach the top of the sides. Also scrape off any stickers you can before painting, even if you have to use a heatgun on them. I painted the two containers I use for storage 10 years ago and the painting went well, but the paint did peel off with some of the original stickers. It may also be worth getting some clearcoat and putting a top coat to help with the longer term sun fading.

Try Sherwin & Williams metal latex it's an industrial coating maybe prime whole container temperature and moisture are essential to watch paint soon as air gets above 50 °F hurry so you'll have all day for paint to dry surface might flash under paint may not dry as metal is cold. Just a few things that I think can help: 1) The big box stores sell extensions for the paint sprayer that will allow you much more comfort while spraying in most conditions and they allow you to cover a bigger area without moving as often. 2) They make a spray tip for your pressure washer that spins like a high dollar Jacuzzi jet.. It is a MONTER TIME and BACK SAVER and it makes hitting every square inch FAR BETTER and because it works so well, you spend much less time power washing!!! 3) Before I massively ruined my back, I worked rebuilding power plants. One thing I got stuck doing was sand blasting huge steel ducts for boilers. (I MEAN MASSIVE)!! We used a "POT" Sand Blaster with a towable air compressor.. We rented the works and bought the sand. (Black Beauty). It will cost you a few hundred bucks, but it will save you weeks of prepwork inside and out... Quite often we reused the same sand after it had been collected on visqueen.. (plastic sheet). Prep work is the hard part and the most needed thing to be done right for every longlasting project..

Love the video as always, sorry for what happened on the container, hope you are able to get it done sooner than later, at least you are getting lots of water for the summer time. Glad to see the children having fun in yard. 🐕🐕❤❤❤.

🦋Love the color by the way. I think you need to train your daughter how to use the Camera before she gets too used to being in front of it. She’s delightful! Much love and many blessings to everyone for all your hard work putting these videos together and taking it on this journey.

The same thing happened to me in Florida. too hot and my paint peeled up on some trailer parts I spray painted, Too often we are so focused on the ambient temp and the prep we forget the temperature of the material matters.

That’s why we use oil based paints on containers. We also tent off areas that are to be painted if containers are outdoors. We did a diamond plate ramp with oil based paints and it took five days to completely cure in 58° weather.

When you have temperatures in the 30's, the very least you want is 3-4 sunny days, even if not warm days, for the primer and paint to dry AND cure...

Great job as always. I think I would have looked up when it's the wet season and dry season for your area and planned to do outside painting coming into the dry season . But it's mother nature for you

The color you chose is great. Hopefully, you have temperatures above 15C. Paint does not cure properly in cold temperatures. The one beef I have with paint is not the paint itself, but the very tiny, unreadable, print on the paint cans.

Very sorry about the paint issue. The kids are very cute. Hope everything goes better after you address the paint issue.
