Bama Beach Bum --Messing with the drag leaves you for the opportunity of having the line break because too tight or in the other direction just outright losing the Fish because of not enough tension, Put the drag fairly snug then leave it alone , The fish will tire out then You can land it Your action with the pole is just fine, just not messing with drag.
In cases when your using tackle that is rated higher than the weight of the fish you are catching (example 10lb line for a 2lb fish) your strategy is just fine. However, in light tackle situations when the fish weighs more than the tackle you are equipped with (example 30lb fish 17lb line) it is important to allow that fish to pull line easily in order to not take a hard run and snap your outgunned leader or straighten a smaller hook. Once the fish begins to tire then it’s important to begin to tighten the drag in order to be able to pull the fish towards you and gain line without the weight of the fish just pulling out additional drag. Taking a guess on where to set your drag and then just leaving it alone is a big mistake when using light tackle.
Bama Beach Bum , I don’t agree but that is just me and hundreds of others,I have never , I repeat never seen a person who truly knows what they are doing mess with the drag as much as You,one thing You failed to mention is the drag the salt water has on the line, if the fish is taking out line he is not going to break it , but it will take longer to land the fish and tire him out.
So let me sum your strategy up: 1. Hook fish 2. Set drag 3. Don’t mess with drag 4. Cross fingers I set it right regardless of what the heck is on my line. Got it.
Based on this ridiculous fine show I pulled the trigger on a 11' Ninja Tackle Dagger. Thanks too for the discount code. I've never fished the surf. and now I can. I have an old, but in great shape, Penn 550SS which should be good on this pole. A bit heavy but I'll leave the 50lb braid on it for now. I'll be checking your videos out regular now. Great freakin, fruckin video. Peace!!!
Should bump up your gear to Penn Slammers and the Carnage 2 Surf Rods. I gave away all my Battles and Spin Fishers, don’t get me wrong, they do the job but it’s all about fishing smarter and not harder. I wish I had the courage to use my Daiwa Exist and Shimano Stella out in the Jetty but these Slammers do the job and I wouldn’t care too much if I dropped them in the water.
Do you catch Red Drum on Fish Bites? I've been using Fish Bites lately in the Satellite Beach/Melbourne area and have only caught Croakers and Whiting. Maybe my timing is just bad...lol.
Speak fisherman, all right? He caught big fish, but apparently these fish are not tasty. Because you didn't take any home, to taste, at least in the vice video they released. As always good videos. Hug to you and your family.🐟🐟🐟🎣👏👏👏💪👍🧑
@Bama Beach Bum, So I've been out on that point a few times when we visit on vacation. Great Fishing there.... BUT, what the heck is up with the dead sharks? Every time we have gone, there are several dead young sharks on the shore. Are anglers tossing them on the shore or are they washing up there?
I’ve never seen dead sharks, but I’ve seen dead bull reds and black drum at times. I don’t believe it’s fishermen, I think there is something that affects certain species at times with the water. Or it could be some of the commercial fishing bycatch kills.
Yea that second drum might be a hybrid I caught one was gold in color I thought for sure it was a bull red until I got my hands on em . Red and black drum hybrid it’s a thing 🤷♂️
FYI I always have a rag looped around my belt to wipe off my hands. How far out were you fishing from shore? Great. Thanks. Keep the vids coming. It inspires the rest of us.
Love the opening with the camera shots and music!! I see your guide "Fred" was with you as well. OMG....that drag just running off does it for me!! Thank you for helping my addiction!! Awesome fish on the beach for catch and release.
Near 60k. Good job. 1st fish Foul hooked ,you felt it & would know so ok.. early in the video. I believe you’re working with circle hooks. You handled it just right. Getting those skills honed in better and better each day. Keep it up ...take care
Good video, but always remember to put as much drag as you can onto the fish without breaking the line....reminds me of the first Black Drum I ever cought....it was on a 7 foot ugly stick,(I believe it was a medium heavy action rod), and a Mitchell 300 spooled with 20 ib spiderwire, as soon as I hooked him,(which was in the eye) I locked the drag down, (which was about 15-20 IBS) and it took about 10 minutes to get him to the pier....but I understand where your coming from when it comes to light tackle.... I tell you what, I will make a bet with you...don't worry, its a simple bet. Me and you in a surf fishing competition, whoever catches the most of a certain species of fish wins, to make it an even match we would use the same rig, hooks, and bait....You can name anything on your part of the bet.....but if I win, you have to let me take you fishing with me when the jacks, Tarpon, and reds are running at the end of the pier, and of course teach you some of my secrets in catching some of the big boys 🐟🐟🐟...... Do we or do we not have a deal?🐟 🎣
Keep fighting the fish the way you want.... it seems to work fine! In Hawai'i where I'm from, the serious shore anglers are trying for Ulua (giant Trevally). They adjust the drag just like you to avoid having the line break... Aloha.
Finally, We get to know the details! That trailer on your Facebook page had us waiting!👀👀 If you aren't on the beach bums Facebook page, you should change that! Great video!🇺🇸
Congratulations on the PB even if it wasn't over 40. Remember it's not always about the size of the fish, but the size of the fight in the fish. Fun times!
Wow! Nice video. I live in Charleston, SC and I grew up fishing and did a lot of surf fishing on Folly Beach and Isle of Palms. But I haven't been surf fishing in years. This makes me want to get some gear together and give it a go again. That mic and go pro work really great! Great video quality. I need to rig up just like you do and catch me some Drum!
Worn Out... Let us all be worn out by catching big fish such as your black drum... Your happiness of catching big fish transfers to all fishermen... Thanks Matt!
Do you recommend large surf fishing rods even when fishing close? I live a little further north so I typically just bring my 7'6" MH with fast action and haven't had many issues. I have been wondering about the 10'+ rods.
I did mention is an earlier video that I'm new sub from way up in the southern plains of the Panhandle of TX. Really like your channel and the way you present it. Yeah I bank fish but not beach. My wife and I like Fred, your small fish chaser, and saw him in this video. He's a lurker in the background. Nice fish buddy, all of them. Maybe you should drop out one rod and bait. That in itself has you running a lot. Look forward to more vids. Fish on and stay a Bum!! Kirk n TX.
When fishing for the ponderous beasts of offshore, blue water, drag is constantly adjusted,no reason NOT to use the techniques from the beach. Great job BBB.
Thanks for all your great videos (regardless of the drag controversy) I've learned a lot from them. Next time I go I feel like I'm much better prepared. I first tried surf fishing a few years ago and I made a bunch of NOOB mistakes. It won't be for a while (my next trip) but I'll post to let you know how it goes.
What a fun day! Heading your way in first part of April, hope to see you on the beach somewhere. Been watching all your surf fishing videos, can’t wait to get down there. During the first part of April what is usually hanging around?
Been river rat most of my life , grew up fishing the Weoka Creek in coosa county most of my youth. Now I'm down on the treasure coast . What tips can you offer as far as baits , hook rigging and sinker weight. Any input you could offer would be appreciated. Roll Tide!
First fish probs wasn't foul hooked, when I saw that wack hook set I literally said he's going to lose it isn't he and boom lol. Nice catch on the second
Hey man what kind of reel do you have I know One is Penn All your's reels are Penn please tell me and also I want to said I like your videos bro and another question what kind of line is a monofilament or is braid line I'm sorry for my English is not pretty good haha I watching you from Veracruz Mexico Take care bro and have fun all the time when you're fishing 🎣
These fish look similar to the fish we catch down here in Australia called Mulloway or Jewfish. They will also mouth the bait so you have to let them run a bit before setting the hook, not the best eating in Aussie waters, but ok, good for curries and stuff like that, a big one would 40+ lbs.
we catch them every year in the deep of the bay ,,,60 to 100 lbs of dead weight... hahahaha .... reel it up to the top and buzzzzz right to the bottom he goes... hahaha after about 4 or 5 times of that he usually gives in ,,,,not a lot of fighting ,,,but the can test your string and gear for sure .... we get then so big that the local guitar guy wants the scales they are bigger then a guitar pick and as thick as a toe nail ,,,, big fish and not to bad eating too :)
