Two episodes back, we explored a 1987 Mikelson 50 sailboat. Known for their luxurious teak woodwork, these Taiwanese boats have a rich history in the sailing world, and are loved by many. Only 18 were built in Taiwan for Mikelson in San Diego, and we were lucky enough to find out sitting in our back yard.
Last week, we explained a little bit about ourselves and talked about the boat in more detail.You told us to hold out, to not buy the boat, because it was too far gone and we could do better. We didn't listen and we put in an offer on the boat anyway. We offered $30k, and it was turned down.
This week, we've seen the final days of a Formosa 51, one of just over 100 that were built. After that, we share lost video from July, from one of the first times we saw the Mikelson, before the new bottom paint was put on.
We're Siren and Captain Hal. We're surfers, we're fishermen, we're yacht brokers, we're boaters, we're captains, we're divers, we're ocean people, we're Floridians, and that's what our channel is all about!

Thank you! I was TICKED OFF that we had to use the iPhone to film us talking late on a Saturday night, hours before the video is supposed to come out. It's been a busy few days and we got pushed for time, lost the light, didn't have the camera... it is what it is. It irks me, though. Thanks for watching! And yeah, personally, I don't want a two year project. That is why I like the Mikelson. I think in 6 months we could have that boat floating and sailing, and then next winter we could dig deeper and get into that rot and replace sails and rigging, etc. That stuff is bad, but it isn't urgent. Or at least not so much the boat can't be in the water or go sailing. We just have to try to keep it from getting too much worse until we an get it done.

Sad to see all the neglected and poorly maintained boats. Many will never be renovated. They will only decay even more. Should be able to find a boat before the decay begins. Of course, then the price is different... In many harbors and marinas around the world there are sailboats left by their owners. They either died, or no longer in older days can sail the seas anymore. There, they often want to get rid of the boat for nothing. But the same thing there, the decay can be great.

Our boat yard in Spain was paid to cut up and haul off to the landfill a CT51 in better shape than that Formosa. We did not allow Chinese boats into the yard without payment in advance. I’ve been retired for 20 years, when I left, Shepherd’s Marina, Gibraltar was the last resting place for many Chinese boats. Gib has gone through a lot of redevelopment since. I have been told that most of the derelicts were towed out into the Med and sunk. BTW we were paid more than 5K to dispose of the CT in 1992.

@@DIYNauticalDream I agree. A typical boat of this design and size is generally over $100k and that is with issues, you can be sure. Even at $135-150k, there will be things to do. I can’t fork that over all at once, but I can get into a project boat and get started, making money at the same time to complete the boat over time. For us, it’s just what we have to do to have the boat we want. I think a lot of people feel that way. When making the offer on this, none of the systems were tested and we had to make an offer “assuming” no systems worked. However, the bank is confident enough in getting those things going that they will push to get the boat in the water and prove those systems are working. We will likely offer more, if they do. Brutal !!! I like the way you guys play Good cop / Bad cop on looking for a boat ! I have a feeling that with the amount of work you don't want to do ( not saying you can't ) and your price that your willing and able to do that your going to need a lot of luck finding that boat for you !
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 10 месяцев назад
You’re not wrong there. When we started looking really closely a few years ago, the budget was a lot higher because my house was up for sale for more than double what it actually sold for. As we dropped the price on the house continuously for over a year, the boat budget dwindled. At this point, we would have to have a really good deal- and they do happen! But we have to be able to bite when we find it, and we probably can’t get something as ready to go as we’d planned. The way I figure, we will have to get into a boat for under $75k and then continue to make money to do the work. We are half considering temporarily going smaller, or getting another stepping stone boat. It just sucks when you feel like you’re finally there and ready for the right boat, and then something happens and you’re back to another stepping stone. I think if we did go smaller or settle for something else, we’d have to figure- no overnight charters, etc. So at that point we can’t spend a huge amount of money because we can’t monetize it the same. OR we just go look for the dream property down in the Caribbean or somewhere in Florida and start there first, then get the boat later, but at that point, we’d have to save all over again for a boat that doesn’t need a refit. To buy a property and build a house will already be a lot. We’d hoped to have the boat and then later buy property and slowly build a house as we make more money. Ehhhh I dunno. So many ways it could work out at this point. We just aren’t getting any younger. I’m 36 and Hal is pushing 39. We’re at that point.

With the power cord, it looks like either the boat is wired incorrectly or the shore power was. Since both power cables had the failed plug, they were probably wired right. You may need to settle for a somewhat low overhead - which is not unusual with tall people on reasonable sized boats. How was the person fool enough to sail with the portholes open?

I’ve never restored a boat. Seems like a real small margin with how much parts cost? So a 50k project is a win over a 100-130k sail away . I started shopping do fun and there are so many decent newer boats from 75-150 . I know it’s not a giant ketch but I wonder where the fun ends with a salvage? I dunno? It's a ticking bomb all the penetrations in the hull and propeller shaft. Have they not been replaced or repaired since the boat was built on an old boat. Then the impossible happens. When the water starts to rise in the boat it's too late to do anything.....the shut-off valves are stuck in the open position, if they are there at all or can't be accessed.... 17:48
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 10 месяцев назад
This is a concern. I have no idea how old that prop was, but they replaced it. I'm not so worried about the hull, and I don't think the yard would do anything seriously bad with the bottom paint. They're a great yard, and they build VERY nice boats here, so they know what they're doing. The bubbles aren't osmotic blisters, they're solvent based, so that's good news. Still a job to be done there, though.

Walk em the plank immediately after tossing the dinner's fish entrails? Ha! -such would go viral on the tube. Especially out here where we got the whites -great whites. The compromise for the extra cash-on-hand might be too unbalanced (insurances, cleaning up 'their' mess, the whining, barf below decks -RANK!, etc.). But then again . . . . Formosa 51 had the plug pulled -twice?! I do hope fido made it out ok. Wonder if his gifted 305's (not menthol stogies, I pray!) went down w/ the ship? How sad. I do hope he's not left high & dry. @TheSirensLog 10 месяцев назад
Hahaha, Thanks for the comment and please subscribe! We'd love to have you around. The dragons are a classic staple in a lot of these Taiwan builds. Some of them have ship or plant carvings in the solid wood doors, some have dragons... I'm actually not sure if some yard or certain years did certain things, or if the ones being built custom had certain carvings they likes to do or what. I wish I knew the specifics on that, actually. Yeah, the charter industry.... Oh man. You're right! It's one of those things you just hope you don't have to deal with, and may never, or you just cross the bridge when you get to it. I worked on yachts and we catered to guests, ya know... wiping poop out of bidets, etc. Never had to deal with puke, thank God. But there is an entire industry of small boats with owner couples running charters on their boats, so we wouldn't be doing anything unique. I've met countless couples around the Caribbean doing just that, and been on their boats, and I've seen their set-up's, which is handy information as it's much tighter and different from the yachts I've worked on. I did also work on a motor coach (one of my yacht crew agencies got me the job) in VERY close quarters and essentially did the same job on that, so running that bus will be very similar to running this boat as well. I know there will be moments, but hopefully nothing that we can't handle. Apparently Molly the chihuahua was fine and the guy is off the boat and moving on. Not sure the current status of the boat, but can't imagine it being good. That boat was a bit much for us, honestly.

It appears you're in the Panama City, Florida, area. If so, are you familiar with a CT51 named "TERRA FINE WITCH"? At the time of the last severe hurricane to hit that area, the owner Charles Ray Browder, kept her at the marina just south of the Hathaway Bridge (Highway 98) near the industrial area where Berg Pipe is located. She survived the hurricane but due to the marina damage, Charlie was anchored somewhere near there. Charlie lived on the boat as he had done for many years. Anyway, he called me (I live in Mobile, Alabama, and had helped him restore the teak coamings and such after he bought her. I also carved the name across the stern and on the two boards at the bow) a month or so after the storm and asked I come to Panama City to help make some repairs. We talked once after the new year and after that I couldn't reach him on the phone. I later learned he had drowned. I ofter wonder what happened to TERRA FINE WITCH. Charlier was the brother of TJ Sheppard, the famous country music singer. Charlie wrote many country songs that were recorded by many famous singers through the years. He also ran with Elvis Presley and had many wonderful stories to tell. Again, any idea what may have happened to his boat?

$5000 dollars for a boat that was in rough shape before it sank , such rough shape it sank , twice ,is too much . In fact they need to pay you to take away his junk . I used to know a guy that repaired boats and did a few that sunk and his advice was never ever buy a sinker . Even the stuff that works will quit soon as it corrodes away

Some of these boats would be better off being used as reefs under water! Terrible condition! A fixer-upper is one thing, but some of these are not worthy of rehabilitation! They are junk! We have had 7 boats over the last 60 years. Only one was a wooden boat. It was a classic Chris Craft 19ft. speed boat. It was more work than all the others. Beautiful but not worth the work. Things are changing. Charter business? The insurance alone is big $$$$. That boat that sunk looked like it was ready to sink! A question that I think about is what you will have when you get it done? Probably not going to be worth any where near the amount you've invested! Not to mention the time you put in. It is a business decision, so it's all the about ROI! Loose the emotions!

Sorry, we’re only looking at these Classic Taiwan builds, like Formosas, Vagabonds, Hudson Force 50’s and the like, none of which are wooden boats. We live in Florida and frequent the Caribbean so while a wooden boat would be a dream if we lived up north, that’s in no way the plan. We also have a good deal of experience, and even for us, that’s more than we care to deal with.

Go to Miami after the first of the year, the land of broken dreams. Walk the boatyards and walk the piers. By the beginning of January everyone that left from points North has made it to the jumping off point for the islands and realized the cruising life isn't for them. You should be able o find an ocean going and more importantly ocean ready cruiser. Some will come from the Great Lakes and had always been in fresh water and stored in old factories every winter. They literally see the light of day for 4 or 5 months a year.

No idea why people like those boats (Formosa ), big heavy slow and lots of work without headroom or the advantages of modern layouts . Every single one I have seen is coming apart if not meticulously maintained . There are smaller boats with more room and better made that will be cheaper to own .
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 8 месяцев назад
That’s is true but each one is a little different so some do have the headroom, while others have areas that limit that. The layouts vary. And they were build across like three different yards so all built at different standards across multiple years, and improvements were made over the years. But you’re correct. Formosas don’t have the best reputation as far as this design is concerned. That’s one reason I liked the Mikelson. It’s basically the Formosa, but built later, so it’s newer and built to a higher standard and with a great layout and the interior is still very solid which is hard to find.

@@TheSirensLog I beg to differ again. I own and have lived aboard a Formosa 51 since 1982. What you have there is a Hudson, sometimes referred to as a Hudson Force 50. They were built on the same island as one another but in different yards. They were built to a lesser standard than the Formosa 51's. Some if not all of the Hudson's had cast iron instead of lead in the keels for instance. I claim a deeper knowledge of the subject on account of seniority :) having been involved with these type of vessels and their owners for over 40 years now. I do understand the misunderstanding on this subject as there has been tons of confusion and what we now call misinformation about these vessels. Heck some people don't even think they sail well. Give'um some wind and rethink that if you value sea kindly. Cheers and fair winds

@@billpeterson7446 To my knowledge, Formosa Boatbuilding didn’t build any Hudson’s. Seniority aside, I’ve been familiar with the Taiwan builds for decades myself. In my personal experience, I’ve never seen a Hudson Force 50 with triple portlites on the transom. I also stand by my original statement that it’s a Formosa because the placket inside read Formosa Boatbuilding, as all the Formosas do. Unfortunately they were one of the lower quality builds of that style and era, and the Hudsons and later the Mikelsons were a bit better overall. Take a look at some of our other videos. I did a walkthrough on the CT 54 that may interest you- maybe you can add some info to that. Or the Mikelson 50 we featured a few times.

Well I think it all boils down too how much work, money and time you are willing to spend on a boat. One think you need to remember is everything else is replaceable except, time. Some feel like it is only time, and not that significant. But time is not replaceable things are, money is. Your time you spend on rebuilding a boat you will never get back, so I am not willing to waste my valuable time on junk. What about you ? Ponder on it a while.

Oh believe me I know. We’ve been looking for the right boat for a few years and we’re literally running out of time. That’s why the Mikelson looks so good because it really doesn’t need as much as people make it out to. It needs a lot! But we can do the important stuff sooner and work over time while enjoying the boat. As time goes on, we’re going to end up going smaller because we will need less of a project.

It is your dreams and aspirations that matter, our option really don’t. Like I said I don’t want a boat I must go thru a refit with because of time. I cannot believe the bank is,spending money on a boat. That's very unusal. Is it a local small bank? There has to be more to that Story. What are you really looking for? You don't want a project , smart choice .but every cheap boat will be a,project unless you are just plain lucky. There are,so many better boat of this era to look at that don't have the 'leaky teakyt' problems but are not as 'romantic' looking .you should broaden you horizons OR check out some older power boats , for $30-50k there are lots,of usable 42' out there that have,way more ,room than a sailboat. Or for a little more you can find america boats like a Hattaras but you have to be comfortable with Detroit diesels as most have them. some go cheap,because they are big and old,but well make. Way better than Twain built. If you go us sailboat there are,many well made boat too. Gulfstar, catalina, Endeavour. Pearson. Etc but condiTion is everything as usual Cheers warren

Ideally, we wanted the forever boat- something we could circumnavigate in, raise a family on, maybe run overnight charters on… that’s why the layout of the Mikelson works. Whichever boat we end up with, you’ll end up pouring all your time and energy and money into it so why not choose the right one first. It’s not more economical to go smaller or lesser first and fix that up and then sell. I’ve been a lover of Taiwan builds for decades and I’d be hard to talk out of that. But there were different yards in Taiwan and not all created equal. Power boat isn’t completely out of the question, but it wouldn’t be the forever boat and it wouldn’t be economical in the long run, fuel aside.

Well, what can I tell you, maybe it's a matter of getting there however you can, in the best state you can get to Guatemala, Honduras (Roatán Island) or Panama (San Blas boatyard) there are attacks against the American currency and there may be a rise in inflation Well, that's what democratic socialist regulators are like, ask Snoopy Biben. The Mikelson 50 is the best in its class, it only needs love, but it cannot be done all at once, gradually, visas and regulations will be more expensive abroad, only the cubic meter of water in the Lesser Antilles is almost 20 Dollars. Humphrey Bogart was a good navigator and he said that the only free place in the world was the sea, now I'm not sure that can be said. good luck

Hey, you're exactly right! I think the Mikelson probably was the best in its class. Things that came out of the other yards weren't always the best (beautiful though), and most started in the 70's. In the 70's, these boats weren't built to the same standard as they were in the mid 80's. By the mid 80's, most companies weren't even making these boats! Mikelson came in in the late 80's and was pretty much the last company to make them, and this boat is even a 1987, so by that time they had higher standards and had a lot figured out. That's not to say they're perfect! There were plenty of issues even then, but not nearly as bad, I don't think.
