I've legit never been so nervous to post a video. I haven't done anything non-Pokemon.... ever. So thank you all for watching, I'd appreciate any feedback you have.
Glad you're trying new stuff. I love your blue/red challenges and have watched since 2020, but eventually you'll run out of content. Good to try something new to keep it fresh.
I don't think you need to be nervous! I think you'll find a lot of crossover between people who love both pokemon and yugioh, as well as a healthy number of people who are just delighted you're posting content either way.
I don't know if you realized this, but July 4th is the anniversary of Kazuki Takahashi's passing (creator of Yu-Gi-Oh!). His body was found after jumping into a rip tide to save two swimmers. The two swimmers did survive, and his heroic act was later reported in a military magazine, because the swimmers happened to be an Americqn soldier and her daughter. May Takahashi rest in peace. A true hero.
This game was SUPER popular in Japan. It sold 1.6 million copies and was one of the top-50 best-selling games in Japan ever (circa 2000). It outsold iconic games like Dragon Quest 1, Ocarina of Time, Super Smash Bros, Resident Evil 1, Tekken 3, Secret of Mana, Metroid, and Kirby's Dreamland (just to name a few). It also was the platform for the first ever Yugioh tournament - that's right, the video game was played competitively before the card game even existed!
Simon Muran is a weird case. He's Grandpa Muto's egyptian ancestor who only appeared near the final arcs of Yugioh, but he's been in several videogames before he showed up in the manga or anime.
Oh hey, a Yugioh video from JRose, neat. It's amazing that there is a Yugioh game even more primitive than Forbidden Memories and the Dark Duel Stories we got, but here it is. There's something just charming about these ancient GameBoy entries that, while I know it lacks in the technical department, just makes it enjoyable to watch.
To answer your question, Simon doesn't really show up in the anime. He usually only appears in older video games. People speculate though he's suppose to be what Solomon Muto's Egyptian equivalent suppose to be though.
Simon actually does appear in the Shadow RPG Arc of the anime and manga. While his name is changed to Shimon/Siamun Muran, his anime counterpart doesn't cover his face and neither of them is generally depicted with blue skin, he does wear the face cover from his video game appearances in his manga debut.
Yeah, and the fact that he has Grandpa’s voice, plays the role of wise old mentor to Yami, and most of all can summon EXODIA, strengthens the connections between him and Solomon Muto
@@Kralex121 i mean his name isn't really changed iirc ? i'm pretty sure it's just spelt differently because it's being translated by different localisation teams, but in the source material it should be the same name in all instances
An important correction to an otherwise great video; the manga and anime did not get their rules from this game. They were written before this game released. This game did its best to mimic how the game was initially played in Duelist Kingdom. However, the rules of this game did become the first draft of the actual rules the physical game eventually adopted. Thanks for rhe video!
It's a bit more complicated than that - this game was announced in May 1998, near the start of the Duelist Kingdom arc. The game was released in December of that same year, right after Yugi duels Kaiba for the right to enter the castle, before the Semi-Finals start. So in terms of "rules of the game" that Konami had to work with, it was only the first 2/3rds of Duelist Kingdom! Then, the OCG would start in February 1999 - while Yugi was dueling Mai. Duelist Kingdom hadn't even finished yet! But these rules are still similar to Duelist Kingdom and the Duel Monsters game. It wasn't until May that the Expert Rules were released, which added Tribute summoning and removed the 1 spell/trap per turn restriction. Shortly afterwards, in July, Duel Monsters II was released. At this time, the Duelist Kingdom arc finally ended, and after the short Dungeon Dice Monsters arc, Battle City began. This is when the manga introduced its rule changes, catching the game up to how the actual card game was being played. The anime didn't start until April 2000, btw. (well, there was an earlier adaption in 1998, the fabled "Season 0", but that stopped short of adapting Duelist Kingdom) This coincided with a rules update for the OCG that introduced continuous spells and traps, special summoning, hand size limits, etc. By this point in the manga, Battle City was in the middle of its preliminary rounds - Joey had defeated Weevil, Yugi dueling Strings, shortly before Yugi's tag duel with Kaiba. All of this is to say: while the manga had begun Duelist Kingdom, and the Duel Monsters Gameboy game was based on those rules, it didn't have a ton of material to pull from because the arc was being written alongside development of the game. And then Konami continued to develop their own rules for the card game, before those rules were implemented in the manga. And obviously, the anime came after both. So I think it's fairly accurate to say that this game DID "invent" the Yugioh card game!
@@LazurBeemz Thank you for all the additional info. I mostly just had the dates to work on since Duelist Kingdom began publication a full year before the game was released. But given how popular it was after only a few appearances before that in the manga, it makes sense they would be building a media franchise alongside its full introduction as the main plot element of the story.
@@LazurBeemz That's very interesting. May i ask from wich sources you have all these dates, exspecially the ones about the introductions of the different game mechanics.
@@CyberBlastoise This was covered in the video. English DDS is the third game. Japanese DDS is the second game. The Japanese name for English DDS is "Tri-Holy God Advent".
@@FlaggedStar There is even a forth part released after our DDS that didn't mad it to the west either, since both, the old rules and the Game Boy Color, were not very popular any more.
YOOOO this is rad! I've been on something of a classic Yu-Gi-Oh kick lately, and I actually never knew about this game! Definitely looking forward to more classic YGO game retrospectives, too!
Season Zero, as a fan of the series, is a great show to watch in it of itself not just to watch the similarities and differences with the modern show, but also to show some really DARK and gritty scenarios we would’ve never seen before in the United States
Season Zero also essentially covers everything from the Manga that the better known Anime doesn't cover, so in a kinda weird sense, the second series is a pseudo sequel... (I wouldn't really call it one, because it changes things from the Manga almost specifically to not acknowledge everything that comes before the point where it starts...)
I was so excited to see this in my recommended. Yugioh video game content is the only thing I like as much as Pokemon content, and you're the perfect RU-vidr for this genre. There's a cozy, methodical kind of feeling to retro Pokemon and retro Yugioh games and it's the perfect blend of engaging and relaxing. Your videos really nail that!
Really happy to see you delving into other games, gives me confidence in doing the same myself since I've been wanting to play a lot of other games as of recently. Keep up the Yugioh stuff as well if you could, despite the current game being in a pretty rough state I still love booting up Master Duel or playing Edison format with friends, it's just a good time.
Love these early yugioh games. I was addicted to Dark Duel Stories when I was a kid 😅 I like how none of the games had any similarities to the TCG. Forbidden Memories and Duelists of the Roses were great games in their own right. Stairway to the Destined Duel was the first that felt like the card game but it's still its own beast.
16:11 did somebody say Raigeki? All jokes aside, loved this video and hyped to see your eventual playthrough of YuGiOh Forbidden Memories. Hope you draw a Raigeki for the win for your next entry in this series. ~Jon
This couldn't have been posted at a more coincidental time as I just completed this game for the first time recently! I obtained copies of the Japanese "Duel Monsters" games on GBC a while back but never got around to completing them. Just randomly got the urge to this summer and then I saw you posted this amazing video. Too coincidental and I love it lol. I'm currently playing Duel Monsters 2 now and working my way to 4. Thank you so much for this video, I enjoyed it✌️
I would love more of this (: I've watched all your pokemon stuff but I in reality only a yugioh player in the last 20 years haha- so this is perfect. The old days of yugioh were... the best. Really captured something- Thank you for doing this
i am happy for people discovering these old games. these are the stuff that made fans like me appasionate to yugioh. konamy now has literally gone compleaty away from what made us love the game.
Yooo. Long-time viewer here. My internet was out for a couple days (cable got cut and couldn't get a technician out on account of the holiday), but I open up RU-vid today to see a JRose video... on YuGiOh?? Imagine my surprise and *elation*. My man, I and I'm sure everyone else is here for this. Much love
Love Yu-Gi-Oh! as well! I would love to see more of it, especially Sacred Cards / Reshef of Destruction, and of course the classic Eternal Duelist Soul ❤

Sacred Cards would be an A+ game if it had link battles.
I don't know if I've ever clicked on one of your videos so fast, and I'd love to see more of the same sort of thing on your main channel, if you decide to do it. Pokemon may be what brought you to the dance, but it's a nice change of pace seeing you explore something different.
Playing through all the YGO games is a super fun concept and I did something similar (in a scaled back way, only the games with the official ruleset starting from Eternal Duelist Soul) when I got back into the TCG a few years ago! Yu-Gi-Oh! is such an interesting franchise that has so much to appreciate both then and now, so I really hope this takes off!
Simon Muran was a recurring character in early Yugioh video games before the ancient Egypt lore was fully fleshed out. He was then tuned into ancient Egyptian counterpart for Yugi's grandpa when the manga reached the Millenium World arc.
Yu-Gi-Oh originally having nothing to do with the card game and the card game being something they made up along the way is my favorite piece of trivia I have
Idk if you're aware, but while the anime for "season 0" is a separate continuity made by a different studio, the manga is one continuous narrative. Duelist Kingdom does follow immediately after the final shadow game of the first arc in the original manga. It's only the anime where season 0 is unrelated, retconned, and only very selective parts retold. I only bring this up because it blew my mind when I first learned it. I always thought DM was just a total reboot of the series.
I'm not a huge yu gi oh fan, i had a bunch of cards when i was a kid, one of my classmates, who basically took advantage of my naivete and ended up with all my cards. I gave up on card games after that. That being said, JRose posts a video. I'll check it out. This is refreshing
I love the video! I’m a big yugioh fan and the origins of the series is so fascinating to me!! Rather than a manga made to sell a card game it was card game designers trying ti figure out how to make rules based on a manga!
Haven’t even watched it yet, but having watched your videos for years, I know this is about to be great. Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon were (and still are) my two favorite media franchises growing up. I still collect and play both with varying levels of consistency and interest. Whether you’re playing the card game, the old video games, or just talking about the original series, I am HERE for it!!
I wasn't quite sure on the timeline of events presented in the video, but seems like you were spot on: December 1997 - Duelist kingdom begins in the manga August 1998 - The card game based on the Toei anime releases (this one has rules wildly different from everything else, and didn't really influence anything) December 1998 - This game comes out on the game boy, the first actual game based on anything like the manga/anime rules February 1999 - Yugioh OCG released in Japan, introduces tribute summoning etc October 1999 - Battle City begins in the manga, rules are changed to match the OCG In other words, this game does indeed come before both the
as fan of your pokemon content. I feel there was some love in this video that i really like. for feedback, overall I thought the video was great but the game seems really simple so its hard to say what could be better. I really like to see that second game next but without a traslation it may be hard. I personally vote make more videos like this if its what you want to do. I enjoy it and if you enjoy, its a double win.
You don't know how confused I was to click on the video and immediately hear your voice. I didn't even realize it was a Jrose video, haha!!! Love the variety!
Simon muran is ancient egyptian solomon muto (yugi's grandpa). Kazuki takahashi had the idea for the character but he didn't decide to make him solomon's past life until he started working on the memory world arc.
I've been subscribed to this channel forever and this is the first time I've seen a new video for it! Congratulations on the release. Love seeing the channel branch out even if it's stuff I'm not too familiar with 😁
Absolutely love the new content, keep it up man. I’m betting if you reviewed the yugioh games and their progression over the years you might just break the internet.
Great video! Just reminded me of one of my favorite games growing up - Yu-Gi-Oh the duelist of roses! Hope you can get to a video of that game someday!
Love this. Would also love to see you cover digimon, medabots, or anything else you want. Also, no clue what the origin for Simon is, but I know he also appears in other Yugioh games, such as Duelist of the roses
This is a great branch out! Any more JRose is good JRose. Would love if you could highlight Forbidden Memories is you've played that one. It has some absolutely wild mechanics.
