Mirror mat is starting to branch out and take the shots he normally wouldn't have taken a few months ago. Can't wait to see who witty he gets in the near future.
“His words ring through your head as you lose consciousness.” Call me dumb here, but I think his words do ring through your head as you lose consciousness.

I unironically need this explained to me 😅 Why did Ash lose it laughing when Mirror Matt said that? What is the other meaning of "slaying" that I'm clearly not young enough to understand?
@@RasmusVJS i don’t think they meant only queer identified people can use it. i think she means it just originated in the LGBTQIA+ community. which it did

@@THEWortox i dunno, it seems like it actually might be there purposefully. the dev made an update to the game last month, I played it. the frame right after most deaths does this, not just this one, and it still happens even in the new update. there were a lot of fixes in the update, i think the dev either added them from the beginning on purpose, or they were a bug that the dev decided was now a feature. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hey, MatPat, if you see this, the blue thorn vine can be gotten safely with the shears. I hope you do because level 8 has some pretty heavy lore implications
Matpat says he doesn’t like Hadestown: I held my breath Matpat not knowing that Why We Build the Wall was written in 2010 and not a political statement (but obviously could be interpreted like that): oh he just has to see it through a different lens (and maybe a different theater)
It sucks when a work unintentionally gets politicized. I remember not wanting to watch "The Rising of Shield Hero" when it first came out because of how the West heavily associated it the MeToo movement.
I'm surprised he didn't notice that that seemed to be a pile of Lilys at the bottom. In the bottom right there's even one that's slightly still recognizable by the colors of her sprite.
And also one of the corpses had maggots and One death ending said she landed on her head killing her as she waited for the *maggots* to eat her dead body
Another game that yall might want to try is Who's Lila? You control a guy's face because he has to manually control each muscle instead of just reacting normally. It has multiple endings and a bunch of theory potential

No right completely ^^ Honestly I felt like the narrator has done that before and we've seen it matpat probably would've said "pfft alright~" (it just feels like something matpat reacted to lightly but I can't remember ^^) Also was it just me, but like I get Ash's explanations like I'm not sure if the rest are just teasing the way Ash like explains or if they completely don't follow
My four year old son says he sees ghosts. "Ghosts hid the toy" or "There are ghosts in the corner" and then he points somewhere with a finger. I’m not even making this up right now
When I was a kid I was afraid of ghosts (a Ghostbuster, I was not) and once I showed my mom the ghost I supposedly saw in fear. She lunged, grabbed the ghost and ate it in one bite. She says I was never afraid of ghosts after that.
Yep. He either didn't see who moved it or forgot he did and has heard about ghosts from somewhere or someone, they pick up on stuff like that. It's nothing to worry about unless he seems scared, just don't encourage it lol
@@thefinalfrontear he played me once actually and now I'm convinced that he just tries to creep me out conciously. There was a moment when I played sort of a ghost hunter. Flashed some light in the general "ghost direction" said some aggressive words and then told my son that I drove the ghost away. To which my son laughed and said in the sweetest voice possible "Daddy you are dummy, ghosts aren't real". And then layed down into bed and straight up turned off instantly. He was three years old at the moment
I saw Hadestown at the Kennedy Center in dc and it was certainly set up differently than how matt saw it the ending was dead center and solely lighted so it drew major attention to the climax. Mara issacs (original producer) also spoke after the show and talked about how the story certainly changed overtime so i can see how things definitely could have gotten lost.
I find it quite fun that the thing to signify Lily’s death in the well are flowers as her name is the name of a flower. Don’t know if that was intended but I personally think it’s a nice detail. I’d also like to note the hair you can cut is the same color as Lily’s maybe that’s where lily is regenerated (or built or whatever)
In reference to Mat's comment about building the wall in Hadestown (mind you I've never *seen* the show, only listened to the Broadway album repeatedly) my take is that he isn't really building the wall for a specific purpose, more because having the workers build it is a mindless, never-ending task to keep them from remembering who they are or thinking about their circumstances. And I also respectfully disagree about it not being a metaphor. It has always felt to me like a metaphor both for Hades closing off his heart so that Persephone stops breaking it (even as he desperately tries to hold onto her he still isn't opening his heart and letting himself get hurt so deeply by it), and a metaphor for the 'beautiful cage' he builds around Persephone to keep her with him. The whole industrial-kingdom thing was built to impress her, and he isn't shy about the fact that he uses beautiful things to chain her to his side. Anyway, that's just my two cents. Do with that what you will ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Matpat: “Would you stay in the guest room and protect me?” Mirror mat: “Sure” Matpat: “Awe you would?” Mirror mat: “It’s in my job description!” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was waiting to hear Mat's reasons why he didn't enjoy Hadestown, and of course he instantly starts off with a misunderstanding about this being Why We Build The Wall
That deep booming in the well sounds like a giant heartbeat. And when Lily fell into the lake and smashed her face, it almost looked like a doll's head-- the eyes, mouth, and nose were all gone, and there was a mask-like appearance on her. This is so interesting!!!
Hey MatPat. I heard the traveling show of HadesTown doesn’t have the center stage the same as the one on Broadway. The one on Broadway has an elevator in the center ring so when he turns in the end all the lights turn on and there’s a more dramatic moment and she’s fully center stage at the end. The stage is used very well in the actual Broadway performance so I hope there’s a way you can see it because it was so amazing seeing it in person.
This is correct! I saw the Broadway performance and the tour (Philly). Eurydice is dead center during that scene on Broadway, with a spot on her. They say their lines as the center ring verrrrry slowly drops beneath Eurydice, then once her lines are done/the piano starts, the ring PLUMMETS and she’s gone.
Question: does that mean there should have been an adaptation made for the stage they were on? (If it's not clear, I am not a theater person so I'm just trying to make sense of this discussion)
@@ArtyMcKenzie No problem, great question! Spoilers ahead: when I saw it in Philly, the adaptation was that instead of the center ring being a lift (the way it is on Broadway), there was basically a panel in the back wall that opened up a bit like a mouth. During the scene where Eurydice is taken back to the underworld, she steps through the “mouth,” which then closes around her. It looks cool, but it definitely loses a lot of the physical drama that Broadway has. Although the “mouth” is center stage, it’s a loooot further back than where the center ring is on Broadway, so rather than Orpheus (who is standing up a flight of stairs) looking back and DOWN at Eurydice (below him, center stage on Broadway), Orpheus on tour looks back and OVER to the “mouth,” which is farther from the audience. The mouth also has the effect of closing over her legs and FACE first, so the audience doesn’t get to see any of her facial expressions as she’s taken to the underworld. This is obviously unlike the Broadway performance, where Eurydice plunges feet-first to the underworld and her head is the last thing visible. So, to answer your question: yes, adaptations were made to accommodate not having a lift center-stage, but the accommodation meant losing out on some of the physical impact of such a dramatic scene.

It could be that, but I wouldn't really say that lily calling the voice a "she" is a reason for that. Sure, the voice being female makes it more likely to be her, but it could not be her as well.

This is one of my favorites GTLives to date bc of the amount of talking. I've said it before, this feels like a podcast. I wasn't expecting it, but I love it
When it comes to “Hairspray,” for why they made the “Edna” role like that. If you watch the documentary “I Am Divine,” John Waters explains that he made the role of “Edna” for his best friend Divine. As a way to lift up his spirits from not being able to break into mainstream acting among other so many other reasons. So for the 2007 remake, to preserve the intention of the role they kept it as a man in drag. Could they have picked someone better than Travolta? Most definitely but it was still an entertaining watch. My favorite musical is Fiddler on the Roof 🎻
Oh, that's so interesting. I remember watching the movie when I was little and asking my mom why they cast John Travolta to play the mother. My mom speculated that it might have been too hard to find someone who could move so much but also weighed so much (the costume they give John Travolta is an obviously bigger build than Tracy's actress, and if they are older they might already not have as much energy to dance so much during filming) and I just accepted that as reason enough. But knowing that it was in fact in honor of a friend makes it much sweeter.
That’s so interesting, thank you for sharing! I always wondered about that but I never thought to Google it since I haven’t seen it in so long. I’d love to see a modern remake with Edna played by a modern drag queen, or a queer man at least, it would be a lot more authentic and enjoyable than Travolta I think.
I was wondering whether the bit about talking about Hadestown for a really long time was an intentional GG reference. 😆 I thought that was pretty cool, too!😄
3:00 I understand that fear as an uncle. When I was babysitting for my eldest niece, they had a baby monitor with the night vision. Never saw anything creepy, but I had seen 3 of the paranormal activity movies by that point so I was PARANOID that something would show up when I looked over at it...
Hey Matt just letting you know there's a reason that lily falls for a different amount of time depending on the amount of rope you have. And there's this trick where if you throw a rock or some sort of object in a hole every second that it's falling is a meter and you stop counting when you hear that it's hit the ground
Okay, you probably heard of some of us talking about this but you should check out the game called your Turn To Die! It a Japanese horror visual novel type game with puzzels, great characters, and lots of lore! It may take a while kinda like Danganronpa but it is a really good game! It is a death game based around the main characters trying to survive by voting for who lives, and who dies... It is really good!
Yesssss i need to see a yttd playthrough- Long games shouldnt be a reason for them not to play anymore cause he got through fnaf security breach and cooking companions Yttd isnt as long as danganronpa either so hopefully 🙏
@@LunaWitcher yes, I think it does a good job of showing Kanna and Sara’s trauma. My biggest gripe with danganronpa is that the characters just seem to move on quickly after each death. The yttd characters feel much more realistic
@@kero6298 SPOILERS DOWN BELOW!!! Ya, I see that a lot too in the games, when people die in Danganronpa everyone moves on like it never happened but in YTTD everyone is shocked and saddened and the closet's ones to them are affected the most. Aka (In order) Nao with Mishima's death, Sara's with Joe's, Reko/Alice with Alice's/Reko's death, Kanna/Sou with Sou/Kanna's death, and Gin with Q-Taro's death.
Theory: This game is not a Time Loop and each Lily is a continuation of a previous run. Each run starts with Papa bringing a new Lily to the house. Lily then sits on the sofa to knit and upon finishing, throws the knitting needles on the floor. Then comes the time for Papa to go to work and for Lily to go to sleep. However, Papa's work is actually to observe Lily while he is "away". That's why he is present at 1st,5th rope and car murder endings. Each time Papa goes to work, he actually puts everything back in place (except for the rocks which are hard to remove from the water). So the question is: who is Lily? And the answer might as well be either a computer program (explaining the Versions for each Lily)[Fun Fact/Coincidence: In 1987 there was an anime film named "Lily C.A.T" in which one of the movie's cats being revealed in the end to be a robot] or a dead spirit that are being "installed" in random kidnaped girls. The original Lily is presumably long dead. According SteamStore the game is set in 2005 and Birthday Card in the cave tells us that Lily was born in 1984. Thus she should be around 21 years old, not 9. Either Lily died and Papa tries to raise her from the dead more disciplined or Papa is actually William Afton trying to rebuild Elizabeth. P.S.: Senpai Please notice that Lily's hair and the hair in the memorial is the same color.
From what I know, the game is like this; There was a original Lily who decided to be goth or something and her dad didn't like that so he decided to make a "Perfect Lily".But he couldn't get the hair right so it was pink.He had to test his experiment so he made a fake scenario.(a.k.a the well thing)When "Lily" goes to help,he kills her and makes a new one. Also we can see in one of the dead endings there is weird creepy looking "Lily" versions in a pipe in the well. When you get all the rope, you come to a lab where dad makes "Lily" In the final ending,"Lily" meets the real Lily and they go to a cafe (I think) to eat pancakes.
Not sure if I agree 100% with your theory, but I'd be willing to bet money on that being the original Lily in the memorial. My guess is that the oily liquid she's in is to preserve the body for DNA harvesting upon the start of each new iteration. Also, it seems cloning experimentation runs in the family if the letter she finds in the beginning is any indication.
Ash was correct, there was a reference to Lily not knowing what Mexico was. I'm not sure if it was in your previous episode of this game, or if it was during the Game Grumps playing it, but I definitely also remember a Mexico reference.
So that your child wont abuse you checking everything, make him check it with you, begin by clearly being his shield of course so that if anything happens you protecc, but then continue to let him do that himself, should work real fine especially since he gets older too
I was surprised when you said you didn't like Hadestown, but if you are referring to the broadway rendition I can agree that some of the choices where very strange but the live cast recording streamlines the musical very well and I prefer it over the other. Both still have flaws which is natural.
Fun fact!: if you dehydrate marshmallows they end up like cereal/lucky charms marshmallows. You can also Dehydrate the jumbo marshmallows for a bigger version
In high school my drama club did a musical every year...my top favorite we did was "Dracula the musical" and "Fiddler on the roof". For the community theater my favorite we did was "school house Rock the musical". I've seen quite a few for fun (school trip) and my favorites from that was list: Aida, Phantom of the opera Music man, 42nd street, Shrek the musical, wizard of oz and Crazy for you.
I think the person in the well is another Lily Also, where did the trophies come from if she lives with her father in the middle of the woods? I also wonder if the intro changes with each death
Please, someone let Matpat know that “why we build the wall” was written in 2006, almost a whole decade before Trump’s campaign. Using the idea of “us vs them” and walls are political strategies that have been used since politics exist. Anais Mitchell even wrote an article about it. I don’t blame him for not knowing, but I do think it is a piece of information that puts a lot of things into perspective
seriously though, i really hope the fourth channel is 'chat theory" where it is basically a live/ sort-of live discussion of theories or random game/film/food stuff theories or otherwise.it could even include the witty banters of videos so if people just want to chil they can react to the "first party" witty banter videos that are made to be fully banter and discussion. I just think it would be cool.
I recently saw Hadestown on broadway and I think the reason the band was onstage was the same reason that Hermes says it was a story and they were gonna tell it again which for me is symbolic because it was just a story and although they knew how it ended they would say it again and again trying to find something different but idk that's just my perspective thanks for coming to my Ted talk
Yepyep, that's how I see it too. I really like that they went with that narrative too and that in universe standpoint it makes sense why they would perform Hadestown over and over again.
In the original off Broadway production the whole show was theater in the round, and those references as well as Persephone naming the band members during “our lady of the underground” all contribute to the very real concept of the show being a story being told by the cast!
I'm just going to repost what I wrote in the first Lily's Well episode before I actually start watching the game because I think it is really interesting and I want Matthew and Matt's opinion! Being that Lily died first by being hit by the car and there is a memory component in the game, I think it is safe to assume that the bloody footprints that we see are from that past iteration of Lily. That being said, I wonder if we died in a different way would we see bloody footprints in an area that reflects that new "first death", or would we see the bloody footprints that would refer to an even earlier iteration of Lily that we didn't get to play?
@@VannyBeumer I forgot about the screen turning red thing. Now I'm wondering if they somehow ARE lore related. There are definitely some unanswered questions after you beat the game after all. Maybe there is enough information for a theory at some point.
@@VannyBeumer Yeah, that's what I meant lol - When I said "first" I meant "first" for us; obviously she died four previous times before we, the player, start the game. My whole question was about whether or not those footprints would show up regardless of how we died for the "first" time.
As @LaithInSpace mentioned, you can see the colors of another Lily at 52:20. The colors of her sprite is in the pile in the corner. It looks like a pile of Lillys, as that same person also said. But then I went to the first video, and at 1:04:28 IN THE FIRST VIDEO, there was only a pile of red and black, with no discernible pink and green clothes. So I'm thinking because only recently was Lily eaten by maggots on Matpat's playthrough, the game remembered that and decided to put the Lily that Matpat had recently killed in the pile, with the bright colors due to the fact that the dyes haven't worn away from the clothes yet. I guess there are no clothing colors in the first video because Matpat hadn't killed Lily and got her left to be eaten by maggots yet. Just another mention that the game does have a memory for specific things. Anyway, thanks for reading my 20-page-essay, and I hope anybody that's reading this has a great day/night!💜
17:56 "what would you add to the lucky charms? i can go first!" i love how mirror matt just wanted to share but decided to ask in case any one else had any strong opinion lmao
Part of Matt's complaints about the staging of Hadestown sounds like it's related to limitations of the theater he saw it at. The way it's staged in NY doesn't have the problems he's complaining about, but with a touring production you have to adjust to the theaters you're touring to. (also "Why We Build the Wall" predates the "wall drama" by like a decade.)
Also the whole point of having the musicians on stage is to push more of the narrative that all the actors are just that actors, acting out this play over and over again, hoping for a better outcome. They state this several times in the play. Also the wall thing! It’s supposed to be a metaphor for building a wall around yourself and blocking the world out to be more “free” but also the literal barrier that surrounded Hades in the original story. These are my interpretations of it.
i hope ash is able to convince matt to give the original cast recording of Hadestown a listen, it's so good and in my opinion better than the broadway. I am very biased though, i fell in love with the ocr so it's hard to hear the new one. ( i haven't actually seen the musical btw)
Matpat there’s a new ARG called Happy Meat Farms by This Place is Not Happy. It spans across other RU-vid channels and involves trapped tortured souls trying to reach out.
I can respect having a bone to pick with Hadestown, but can we at least agree that Patrick Page's voice is absolutely astonishing for those songs? Sings like the low register of a pipe organ and it is a GIFT
37:19 "What's your favorite episode of GTLive? The one where they talked about Hadestown for a really long time" Ash is a Game Grumps fan confirmed (that's a recurring GG joke) 👍
Naw, it's the intruder from that other game that he played. "Are you alone?" "Are you sure?" Stephanie and MatPat literally peeked behind the couch just to be sure.

How did Mat forget about the bedsheets and papa's belt? XD But yeah, the pillow one was rough ._.' and I wouldn't call the maggot ending peaceful, Lily would eventually die of thirst. I can see her trying to get back up to open the well and fall down in the process..
I feel less bad about my sweet potato addiction now... almost every day I have 1 sweet potato with kosher salt and herb ranch and it's the best thing ever.
Day twenty eight of asking Mat to play games bc my Reddit doesn’t work: - Little Nightmares DLC Secrets of the Maw - Little Nightmares 2 - What Remains of Edith Finch - Visage - Both Subnauticas (Yes I know he might not play the last one. Yes, I’m putting it anyways. Can’t hurt to take my chances)
"Peaceful ending." Lily would only have two choices then. Jump down the well and die, or wait it out and die of thirst, but what is stopping the maggots from start eating lily once she becomes too weak to move but before she dies of thirst.
Right? It's a lot more cruel than most of her other deaths so far. They're quicker. And with how naive she is, she'd probably wait for a while instead of choosing to jump...
