This game seems to be doing one of the things I was always most fascinated about with Stellaris; the part of your nation's origin of how you started working to unify the planet and finally get your butts into space properly. All it took was some aliens.
@@jakobinobles3263 One should observe here that "UFO" in military terms do not equal "extrateresstial spaceship". UFO only means unidientified flying object and *could* quite literally be a rock or another nations military craft that just wasn't identified. Yes, "UFO" sightings are confirmed. Alien sightings are *not* .
@@jakobinobles3263 Why would an alien species advanced enough to be able to cross the VAST DISTANCES to get here *ever* be interested enough in humans to actually come to the planet and observe us close hand?
6:40 As a self proclaimed geography nerd I can tell you that piece of land is called French Guiana (pronounced Gee-ah-nah) and has caused quite a few goofy statistics such as the fact that France's longest border is with brazil.
Terra Invicta is honestly eh. It's just too much once you get to space and fight aliens. Just so much to follow and micromanage - which alien will be targgeting which of your hundreds of bases. Oh look, that one councilor who died just set your air control into the negative, and now your sttation with control nods has rebeled. It's the opposite of the mantra "less is more".
The reasoning as to why the equator is better for Launch sites is because that is the point at which a planet rotates the fastest and it helps rockets scape Earth's gravitational pull. Most if not all of the EU's space launches are done from French Guiana for this reason. Just if you were wondering why that was the case after Potato mentioned it at the beginning. I also want to mention that I am liking this game, please make more videos about it.
Not only is it more efficient due to starting with increased momentum, but it's also the most versatile with regards to achieving different orbital inclinations. For instance, a polar orbit (one that orbits vertically, which allows the satellite to have full but periodic coverage over the entire planet) can be launched with equal difficulty from any latitude by pointing north or south from launch. But an equatorial orbit (such as a geostationary orbit) requires either launching a ship directly east from the equator, or spending a lot of fuel in orbit to change your inclination.
@@Popzin101 French Guiana is an overseas department of France on the northeast coast of South America, composed mainly of tropical rainforest. The ruins of 17th-century Fort Cépérou overlook the capital, Cayenne, with its colorful Creole houses and street markets.
@@cjwauer4730 I saw his videos when I got Phoenix Point. Then I randomly saw some guy with the same name in my feed giving RIDICULOUSLY in depth coverage of Ukraine and I was like...wait a second... SURE ENOUGH IT WAS THE SAME GUY. Absolutely mind blowing.
The EU opening is so close to my heart - and even though it's harder than it once was (when it was horribly overpowered), you're right that it still gives you the ability to build quite the super-state and be a very strong opener. Hope you can hang on until the unification cooldown lapses!
US and China you can't get right off the bat anyway, you have 0% chance , the best country early on is Russia except Germany for the economy. China actually has a stronger economy than US in the game, that means all your stat points will grow up faster. I am currently in 2026 and I have about 3 points in China, quite hard to get but I don't play on super fast speed
@@nervgear2254 There's ways to get into the US and China super fast, like increasing public opinion and gobbling up all the control points in surrounding countries. Also you can have 3 councilors increasing unrest and a 4th one spamming Coups every turn and in less than 6 months you should have 1 successful attempt, which should give you the majority of the control points on either. The main thing is that your influence generation is going to tank due to having such massive economies in your control.
@@hecatedraws That's the thing, you have 0-2% chance of increasing public support there in the begining that's why I said that. Let's say 10-11-12 influence wich is the stat for control and public opinion that's the roll.
@@nervgear2254 No way the roll for Increase Public Opinion is ever that low, at least if you use a councilor with at least 7 persuasion. Do this, search up Perun's humanity first playtrough he ends the first episode on the 15th of January 2023 and he already controls the whole of the US. I was able to do something similar with China also.
@@hecatedraws I just told you the stat from 8 to 10 influence, that's for China early on. I don't know if there was a patch of late to change anything but that's what I get. Humanity First is also what I play, perhaps there are some additional stats that contribute to that, perhaps that I got full points in Russia is giving me a penalty
Me: Well I think I’ve gotten over my 4x addiction and I’ve played all I can of Civ, Stellaris, and Humankind. Maybe I can get to those creative projects I’ve put off- Potato: what if crack was a 4x game?
@@cumunist2120 i'll throw in the endless series too (endless legend and endless space), but honestly yeah, aow planetfall is so underrated. It has russian dwarves and the mobile infantry and necrophage cyborgs, plus psychic cults, a self-replicating plague of predators and spicy pest control, all connected by a mix of civ style strategy and xcom style tactical combat. What's not to love?
@@bonogiamboni4830 oh yeah Forgot the endless series you just have to include that if humankind is included. I personally love the Kir’ko for obvious reasons
Can confirm it plays on the steam deck. I would also like to say the game has some great com chatter immersion when you zoom into the ISS with ground control.
Heads up, you need all 4 french CPs to form the EU and from the few attempts i've made (normal difficulty) it's almost impossible to get them all first. In fact it's not unusual to see one or two CPs taken in the first round.
US is such a control sink tho. Russia is pretty good to expand early. US is all about that research and army control. It is a shame you can't devour canada and mexico early.
For any democratic country its extremely easy to take control of them if you just do a couple rounds of public campaigns. If you have 2 councilors with decent skill at it you can up the chance to take a control point from 0% to like 70% pretty easily.
The Quick Learner trait doesn't cause counselors to level up 20% faster. It reduces XP cost by 20%. This causes them to level up 25% faster. 100 / 80= 1.25 Maybe pedantic but this non-linear behavior looms larger when modifiers get larger (which they may not do in Terra Invicta).
@@UIM_Moose 100-20=80 Then you have to divide 100 by the discounted rate to get the rate increase. E.g something that is 50% cheaper doubles the rate of production. 100-50= 50. 100/50=2 A 90% reduction increases the rate of production 10 times. 100-90=10. 100/10=10
@@PotatoMcWhiskey I think I see what you're saying... You're looking at it as if you're starting at 80% looking to get back to 100% so you'd need 25% of 80 = 20 right? Thing is you're starting at 100% and getting a 20% reduction, which is just simply 100 - 20 Ultimately it's the same thing, 100 is 125% of 80 and 80 is just 80% of 100 lol
Please do more video PotatoMcWhiskey!!! You are awesome at explaining this game out of everyone that is playing it. Definitely helping to understand how to play this game.
Gat dang, McWhiskey....you managed to break this game down so well, I'm nothing but excited to play it and immediately purchased it upon finishing the vid. I can't wait for this level of challenge, and thank you for being so in-depth and descriptive with some of the more confusing aspects of it. I feel like I'm actually set up to learn the mechanics first-hand, and plan on losing repeatedly until I can gain something resembling a kind of victory :D
@@PaladinElliott understandable, it's like how most people listening to a metal song will find it aggressive and energetic meanwhile i've gone to sleep multiple times while listening to meshuggah.
I've been watching for this game for a while, super stoked to see it come out!! Especially when that news comes in the form of another top-notch Potato video...
Looking forward to see you playing this. Bought it around release after having waiting for it for a VERY LONG TIME and I'm really happy with it. Could use a better looking and less clunky UI, some more varied music, and a bit more in-depth description on warfare and some things that the tooltips are missing. Otherwise a really nice game so far. Looking forward to getting my a** beat in my first space battle! :P
I never thought any game would replace the Civ series as my favorite 4X-only-one-more-turn addiction. This game has done it. I am completely obsessed. I've played 77 hours in nine days and would have played more if I could have. Astonishing game.
@@mattkomlofske8912 Up to 156 hours now. I can't put this game down. The only issue I've had is that the game doesn't do the best job at explaining how all the moving parts work and I've had to restart a few games once my mistakes were made painfully clear. :D
@@michaelrobinson3543 Yeah I'm still getting the hang of it. Had to restart a bunch when I learned a new thing and realized I could use it to my advantage. Still, I REALLY like this game, even if it is a bit hard to grasp. I'm sure they'll improve the tutorials before official launch.
I love the fact that you are playing this game, I had it on the radar ever since the Long War devs announced it. Now it is everything I expected it to be.
Pollyana doesn't boost his Loyalty, it boosts his Apparent Loyalty. You need to investigate him with another Councilor to learn his actual Loyalty. Also, thanks for the video!
PotatoMcWhiskey, I appreciate when you check out new games. It's exciting to see you engaged with unique themes and mechanisms in games that aren't in civ. And your genuine interest in them makes it worth watching.
Alot more of this please, tx :) Honestly though i heard of the game, searched for it on youtube and was very happy you apparently had interest in it, and saw you just had uploaded a fresh new video about this game. Been refreshing your page, to see if you uploaded a new video, hope it comes soon!
Generally the easiest way to get someone's location is to simply get the location of their IP, which brings up the location of their ISP which can tell you either the city that they are in or a nearby city.
Dude, this game is everything I've ever wanted in an alien invasion strategy game. Also you earned my subscription!! Good stuff, dude. Keep on doing the thing.
Fun fact about Russia and Nuclear weapons in this game, at least my playthus, if you capture lands it sees as its own, it nukes said land. Happened every time to me at least.
I would highly recommend numbering these videos that are in a series. it let's a new channel viewer (like myself) know that there are future episode planned and this isn't a one off. (i don't want to watch some 40 min intro video then have the creator go "and thats the beginning of this game its great pick it up" like some youtubers do. showcase style i guess?) it also helps people find the next episode in their side bar as well as helps youtube know which is next. youtube suggested the 3rd in the series to me. it's algorithm can detect the order easier with numbers. it may not be as 'pretty' title wise but it does help allot.
most content creators don't number their videos anymore because the youtube algorithm recently started discouraging it (e.g. if a video series is numbered it's now much less likely to be recommended). However when Potato starts a series he always makes a playlist for it, so I always go there to make sure I'm watching the videos in order. Here's the one for this series: ru-vid.com/group/PLr_5Byhx_s894J6iMkgO-Xs8BwUjgMvhT
Bro I have to pause this every two minutes just to digest the information it’s so much. Thanks for going into detail though. I really do appreciate that
thank goodness potato is covering terra invicta, I really wanted to learn it but it’s just a bit too much for me atm. Thank you potato for pushing me with the training wheels.
@@axxey most straightforward answer I can think of is that Epic give them money to do that, but I doubt any developer will admit that reason. Also, AtS is planned to release on Steam in Q4 this year, so there you go.
As a German I would never have thought to see east and west Germany split on a map with a timestamp that says 2022 on it but sure, here it is Edit: It just doesn't feel right to look at
After 10 years in game, I got a big crazy. In 2032, I controlled the entirety of the unified EU, and Russia, as the resistance (I think I can even merge the russian union into the EU as I could federate them to the EU). I had taken over 75% of the martian sites, so I had tons of minable materials, and could have a fleet around earth and another on mars. Those fleets had given me minor victories against the aliens... of course, said aliens were sole scouts, but still, that felt great. But on earth, my ennemies had taken over big nations. The servants, who want to collaborate with the aliens, controlled China, while the protectorate, which wants to surrender to the aliens, controlled the USA (I had signed a non-agression pact with "Humanity First", as like me they want to resist the aliens). So I though that the solution was to sacrifice Russia to shut down both USA and China in a big nuclear war. So it sent my agents to russia to tell the president to declare war on the US and China. And it worked very well. With Russia I atomized both nations, and russia got nuked during the exchange. After emptying my nuke stockpile (and getting russia flattened by nuclear fire), the war was over. But the world turned to chaos after that. All the economies fell appart, including the EU (which hadn't been damaged by the short war itself). The EU was 2000 billions economy. That is less than France at start alone. The EU had only 3 control points at that point. Russia, the US, and China only 2 control points. And the other factions seem to have declared a secret war on me, as they have started taking over my stations, and try to take my control points everywhere. Oh, and there is a nuclear winter and food shortage worldwide. I think I made the job easier for the aliens :/
When i tested this game on steam a while ago i didnt pass the first hour but now seeing you playing it makes me giving another try , ill keep follow this series because i am interested how your plan turns out
Honestly, in any realistic scenario, "convince the aliens capable of interstellar travel not to kill us by accident or malice" seems like the far easier option compared to trying to fight them. Fighting someone who owns all travel around the solar system and can use relativistic weapons just by throwing out their garbage while on an approach vector is pretty much not doable as anything but an insurgency - and insurgency requires them to not just turn the planets surface into slag from orbit.
This game feels like part of the Disclosure process: alien life and activity ongoing on the planet, large amounts of corruption and institutional control and manipulation for wider strategies. It looks fantastic, and depressingly like a potential reality.
I'm from the Netherlands and i love how our little country is playing a role in this playthrough. I'll be watching through the whole thing and might even pick up Terra Invicta at some point. Although i don't know if Terra Invicta is a good "my first 4x" candidate. Please keep the Benelux in the series❤
Ooooh thanks to you knowing what the game is and explaining things more I finally understand how it's a space 4x game. All I could see was crusader kings with aliens and it looked super uninteresting to me but it definitely looks more involved now and it's clicked for me.
The Academy isn't marked difficult because of the one event, the Academy is marked difficult because they have the hardest win condition (you're trying to convince the hostile interstellar aliens trying to conquer Earth that humans are actually their equal).
Hey great game ^^ great video , normally your location can be extracted from Ip adress , how they do that ...it gets a bit technical but its not very difficult to do.
Yay, Potato knows Parun. Glad he's made a hit doing war commentary. Now to get Potato to play some Multiplayer Dominions 4 and make all of RU-vid suffer.
