Totally agree about the cut out and the magwell. When I first handled a Gen 5 I immediately got turned off by the cut out. It bit into my hand and I knew they solved a “problem” that didn’t exist for me. I’ll wait until they improve their “improvements” before I get rid of my Gen 4. Good and thoughtful review. Thanks!

Thanks for the video! The magazine well cutout is the reason why I sticking with the gen 4. For me, in my situation, reloading is more about clearing a malfunction, and not because I will run out of ammo in any possible situation. Like you said, those cutouts don’t make sense.

I have a Gen 5 and I got it about 3 months ago and it has the matching bevel on the frame and slide, but I have been looking for others who have one like mine and ive only seen the ones like yours with mismatching frame and slide. good to know they actually fixed them from now on!

I have always been taught to grab the sides of the mag, finger thumb squeeze. I teach the same way. Why use 1 finger in the front to strip a mag, 2 is better.

I bought a grip plug that had a pretty good bevel on it for my Gen 5 19 and there was still a little bit of a lip that the mag would occasionally get hung up on just past the grip plug. Then I sanded it down to match the grip plugs bevel. Works a lot better for me. Still can get a good grip on a mag if I needed to strip it out to clear a malfunction. Still has the hang up in the front but I'll take the small improvement. Just thought I'd share my experience

Since purchasing my VP9 and VP9SK. I have found it very hard to buy any new Glock pistols. For the same price, I can get a HK. For me, the VP9 has zero problems that need resolved, outside of the stupid rear window plate. Which you can now buy a solid plate to replace it. Making it perfect for me.

I just got my second G19 gen 5. I agree completely with everything TWANGnBANG said in the video. I love the improvements on the gen 5 accept for the magwell opening. I am a Glock armorer and the improvements internally is where the gen 5 really shines. I hate what was done to the magwell opening on the gen 5. For stripping a magazine Glock could have done what Magpul did with the baseplate on their Glock magazines but I won't go into the details about that. The finger cutouts and flared magwell was so unnecessary and only the FBI would request something so stupid. I was a LEO for ten years and I wouldn't want to carry a gen 5 on duty but I would carry it off duty. I like the magwell on the 19X. I wish the gen 5 magwell was the same as the 19X.

I agree 100% on all your points. I love the lack of finger grooves and the RTF texture. I really dislike the cutout on the front of the mag well, though. It hasn’t been an issue with catching the mag, but I still dislike it. I sent mine to Jagerwerks for an RMR cut, and I also had radius serrations cut on the top corners of the slide, and it works great for manipulating the slide from the front. If someone builds a decent mag well, I’ll buy it immediately, but that’s my only complaint.

As a police officer I say *simplicity wins* This is especially true during our anti terrorism training. When you and your team are under constant fire there's nothing worse than complex handling of a weapon. You completely lose your shit, the adrenaline goes through the roof and your motoric skills go down to basic level. And this is where a service weapon should build up on. *Easy peasy* to use. Especially when you wear heavy, blocky body armor.

AFCA - World Bodybuilding Archive that’s why the Beretta 92 has been used in more police/military organizations worldwide than any other handgun. Used them for 11 years in the navy. They were beat to shit and heavy, we hated them but never had one fail apart from Beretta bite.

Regarding the sights, I experienced the cutoff ball only on the Glock 26 and not the G17 or G19. The sight radius is what makes the difference. That said, the G26 is my favorite Glock and I'm glad they finally fixed that.

Exactly. Love everything about the gen5. They nailed it except for the giant fail of the mag strip cut out. Need to do away with that crap. Worst part is it’s really hard to fix because of how big it is and where it is. So for me, 19x and cut the grip down to 19 size.

I get it now, I got used to shooting low with my old Glock 19 because the sights we're aimed high and when I tried this G5 G19, I consistently shot low. Because I was doing the same compensating for the older sights. This not good if like me someone is not aware of this change and in a moment of need. The issue is to many changes to fast
@TWANGnBANG
@TWANGnBANG 5 лет назад
Well, the sights always shot POA/POI when you aligned the outline of the entire front sight with the notch in the rear sight, but yes, if you just focused on the ball, you’d shoot high. Glock didn’t change the true sight picture, but they did lower the cut in the rear notch a bit.

My gen 4 was modified in the grip, removing the finger grooves , deep undercut and flattening the blackstrap. It may have been that I trained with the gen 4 for so many years that it indexed better and felt more natural in my hand than the gen5. That said I have racked up a decent amount of time on the gen 5 both live and dry as well as in some LE training. The gen 5 has preformed flawlessly so my confidence is there but the smaller grip is taking a little more getting used too than the modified gen 4 impart to the largeness of my hands. I would have liked to have seen a flat backstrap if only as an option since I don’t want to modify my duty pistol. I agree with your assessment of the gen 5. As for the improved barrel accuracy, well I may not be good enough with the gen 5 to see an improvement as I can’t tell a difference in group size between the two.

Good follow up video. You made some excellent points! I'm not a Gen 5 owner, but I have handled one. I do like that the finger grooves are gone, the slide finish is well done, plus the trigger has more of a defined wall/break than before. The sights are still not my cup of tea, as there are so many others that do a better job. Then there's that mag well indent. Really? I don't think that the mag reload will be a factor, but like you stated that the chance of a fresh mag insertion isn't absolutely zero. You're right! Glock could have done a better job with those spots the mags get hung up on. If Glock really wants to knock it out of the park, they can. But I'm sure that marketing tells them to reserve a few other improvements for later releases. We see that from other manufacturers outside of the gun world, like Apple and Honda as a few good examples. All these companies wind up doing is pissing off their user base to an extent where perhaps they look elsewhere, while loyalists throw up their hands in disgust and quietly protest. I've done both! This isn't a deal breaker for some, but many of us expected better since it's been some time when Glock rolled out their Gen 4's. Some might hold out hope that these versions are Gen 4.5's and not really Gen 5's, with another line that's really "perfection" in another couple of years. That said, I'm sticking with my Gen 4's. Also, I've moved my primary carry to the M&P 9mm M2.0 Compact with an Apex trigger and a Shield M2.0 during summer months, plus I'll be adding a CZ P-07 soon. My Gen 4 G19 is still in the carry rotation as a backup now.

The finish wear on the slide stop/release isn’t just from the holster. My 19x has never been in the holster and it looks just like yours just from using it with my fingers. Like you said no big deal but it should’ve been the same coating as the slide. Keep up the videos!

The magwell cutout is the only GEn5 downside... But I had a bad double feed late winter 2018 and the cutout helped get a stock mag out of the gun really fast. IF not for the cutout I would have had to push the mag out from the top of the gun with a stick... EDIT: or maybe wedge it out with my multitool.

Never been a Glock owner, BUT, the feel of the 19X and the Gen 5 G19 has me doing some reevaluating. I use Trijicon HD XR Orange on all my non 1911's. The sights on the G19 are my biggest gripe. My wife liked the 19X better than the 2.0 Compact in her hand. Same gripe on the minuscule sights. I'll have to thank or blast our friend MOJO for bringing his new 19X to our house and show it off. I Maybe ruined. Sigs, M&P's, 1911's, KAHR and Bersa, BUTT NEVER a Glock until now.

I just purchased the Glock 17 gen 5 about 3 weeks ago with factory tru-glo night sites and its one of a few 9mm's I will probably ever own as I'm not as fond of the 9mm round as some are but anyway Glock did make a change on the G17 gen 5 that you can see right off the bat and that's the front part of the frame that didn't match the slide before on earlier gen 5 model's it is now beveled to matched the slide and looks really good I'm not aware of any other changes at this time? but I am still seeing a lot of the gen 5 -17 and 19's where the frame doesn't match the slide in local gun stores they are not selling they are just sitting in the case at the store my Local gun dealer got 3 gen 5- 17's and a couple of gen 5-19's with the corrected frame to match the slide all were sold the 1st week he had them the others still sit waiting for a buyer

I never noticed the cutting the dot off thing because I'm focusing on "equal height, equal light" like I'm supposed to be. I even have a steel set of them on one of my guns and never once did I realize that. I'm also glad they left the slide stop small because it's only needed for verifying an empty chamber. The smaller the better. As far as front slide serrations, they are only helpful if you're going to press check and that's just a movie thing, so no issue there for serious defensive gun users.

I’ve never seen using the slide stop as a slide release result in incomplete battery. I’ve seen even SF guys ride the slide on slingshot method under stress more than once.

TWANGnBANG The problem with using the slide stop to reload is not with battery issues, but with the fact that it doesn't always work. What I mean is, if the slide is not to the rear when you insert a new magazine for one of many reasons, you are going to try to use the slide stop, it won't do anything, and then you're going to tap rack to get the gun running. This also assumes you're even holding a gun you're familiar with. By always running the slide manually, you now have one trick that fixes everything but a double feed. Hit or insert mag, Run slide. You'll be reloading behind cover more than likely so the .1-.2 added to your reload won't matter. Also since you lose dexterity under stress, your numb fingers won't be fiddling with small objects. I recently took a pistol class where they setup various student and instructor guns with unknown simulated malfunctions. I grabbed every gun, tried to shoot, tap racked, and shot. If I needed to reload one I wasn't feeling for a slide stop lever on an alien gun. Just hit the thing and pull the thing. I was getting high fived afterwards as if I just set a world record when I went through 5 different guns without issue. If our immediate action involves running the slide manually, why not make that instinctual response the answer everytime? If we're playing gun games, time matters more than reliability. Those guys memorizing their course of action before they shoot a stage. There's little stress and no surprises. In a gunfight we don't have that luxury so we must bomb proof our practices. As far as riding the slide, that's just training issues. It's no surprise that you saw military guys do it. We should try to rip the slide off the back of the gun every time.

TWANGnBANG Oh sorry. Also, slingshot method is the mark if an amateur. We come over the top with our support hand and palm it and then rip it rearward with great force. And for some people like myself, you have to break your grip on guns to hit the slide stop, which means regripping as you push the gun back out. Your hands appear similar in size to mine. Try and get a solid strong one hand grip on a 19 and then see if you can reach the slide stop. You also have to break your grip to hit the mag release but you have more time to regrip at that point.

The reason you don't need to have one way to release the slide for every manipulation you do is because you don't perform learned actions step by step. It's like playing a riff you know well on a guitar: you don't play one note then the next then the next- you just play the riff from start to finish without even thinking about each note. Same with a reload or a remedial drill or whatever. We learn the set steps in doing the action, then practice the heck out of them with lots of repetition until a reload is no longer a series of distinct steps- it's just one action from start to finish. I should've said "over the top" instead of slingshot, yes. I've seen guys ride the slide doing over the top reloads. Many times. I've never, ever seen anyone have a malfunction due to using the slide stop on a reload, yet it is clearly faster every time. You are picking a slower AND LESS RELIABLE method of performing the most likely action you're going to need to do in an extended gunfight in favor of keeping one step the same across different series of actions. If you can't reach the slide stop with your trigger hand without adjusting your grip, you hit it with the thumb of your support hand after seating the mag.

TWANGnBANG I agree we should learn one riff. Your method however, requires you to figure out which of your several riffs must be played given your situation, while bullets are being directed towards you. It's impossible to ride the slide forward if you try to rip the slide off the gun. I've been doing it for 10 years and have never once ridden the slide forward. My hands energy is moving rearward until its grip is broken by the slide stopping. You'd literally have to super glue my hand to the slide to keep it on the slide and returning with it. It is undoubtedly a more reliable method of reloading in and of itself and even more so when you consider the mental ramifications of having to assess and play multiple riffs depending on your situation when sometimes using a slide stop and other times not. If we disagree that is fine but I highly recommend you try running the slide. Based on your concerns of riding the slide I know you haven't or perhaps, just not correctly. It's a non-issue and the practice comes with mental reliability benefits galore.

I’ve got a 17 gen 4 that I use for IDPA and put 5000+ rounds through and only had half a dozen or so malfunctions. The only complaint I have is the damn thing eats magazines, the slide release wears the plastic mags causing them to randomly fall out

Same here, bud. I enjoy the new Gen5, but I've always loved Glock, even though I dislike a lot of their sights, and other aesthetics. They're very reliable. I have owned my Glock 16 since 2001 and I've only had it jam a handful of times, but that was after purposely putting it through stress tests of more than 300 rds. without a single cleaning of the gun in the same day.

I have a gen 5 and gen 4 19, both with Ameriglo hackathorns and I shoot the gen 5 better, especially at distance. I am noticing a ton of barrel wear though.

Joe Sowards Do you mean finish wear on the barrel or the rifling? If you mean the finish I'm thinking it's a tighter barrel to slide fit, the barrel in my gen 5 fits the slide like it was cut out of the same block of steel, getting more finish wear on the barrel than I had on my g23 but I like it :) plus tighter fit = better accuracy so win win for me

Good video. I’ve been shooting Glocks since 1987 and I agree with your review. My favorite is still the gen3 but after putting about 1000 rnds out of my new gen5 I don’t know. I’m definitely shooting the gen5 better in all my drills. After quite a few fast reloads I can’t say I’ve had a problem with the mag well. I think all the little changes they made on this gun add up to it being a little better shooter. I hear all the people out there complaining about forward cocking serrations and all that other stuff and it doesn’t matter at all. It’s a Glock it shoots and acts like a Glock those who don’t like the gen5 can stick with the 3 or 4. My overall assessment is it’s a Glock only a little bit better.

Why not enlarge the base plate just enough to make some cut outs on the side of the base plate for stripping mags?
@EvolvinEvo
@EvolvinEvo 6 лет назад
put a grip plug, it will solve half your problem and you can still rip out the mag from the cutout. Plus most likely if you were to fumble a reload from your proper "workspace" it would be your mag catching on the rear where the grip plug would fill out. Not the front where the cutout is. Just my observation, I have a Gen 5 G17 with grip plug, where as my Gen 3 and 4 G19's don't. and yes I do a lot of the reload drills (one round chambered) empty mag, loaded mag on beltline, shoot, reload, pickup dropped mag, tac reload with it returning loaded mag to belt line, repeat.

I need to shoot more pistols. I loved getting my hands on some during the KY trip, but it wasn't enough. 😬
