Its actually an idea that works across genres when your aranging stuff. Its really easy to just layer on 20 different instruments, but if they are all on top of each other, chances are you'll hear none of them and it'll be a big ol' mess. Even orchestral music requires a composer to be *really* careful to avoid creating nasty sounding mud. Even in rock and roll, if you've got two guitars slinging around the same region of the fretboard, chances are it'll just sound confusing (Which is why the lead stays high, and the rhythm low, and if the lead wants to go low, the rhythm has to dial it right back.)

"That was my first take...shall we just keep it?" Good advice indeed. Having been with a few people in the studio who insisted on doing multiple takes (pre DAW comping!) where the original idea worked, but just went down hill each and every time they tried a new take...! Even in my (less than professional) occasional recording/producing role, i ALWAYS got someone to think they were doing a dummy run for levels, etc, but always recorded it, just in case it needed to be pulled out of the bag after the above process. Worked many times!

@@ArsenalTheProtogen as a tenor sax player: I'm not. I maintain that tenor is probably the easiest of any of the single reeds. Just slap your face on and blow and something will come out. @@spracketskooch I mean, kind of. I don't play sax either, but know the basics, and basically Rob was doing the equivalent of playing open strings on a guitar, except there is only one string, and 1 extra fret he figured out. While it's fairly impressive what he managed to accomplish with those 2 sounds, there's absolutely no versatility in that playing method. I'd more ascribe this to his skill as a musician. There's a joke about how a musician just needs 2 random noises, and make a song out of it, and Rob definitely proves that part true.
