Atlanta musician here. I’ve played with Jimmy several times, and you really can’t say enough good things about him. He sounds effortless no matter what style he’s playing, and is as much fun to be around offstage as on.
What a small world - I was at this show! My buddy Matt Smith and I (rightmost heads in the audience shot) stood in the front row, jaws open the whole show. Matt actually opened this show with Jeff Sipe, the drummer, as they have a long history together + have recorded together. I think every guitarist in Fayetteville was there that night. Thank you so much for this transcription! Its always good to have more people aware of Jimmy Herring.
Jimmy Herring and Jack Pearson are two of my all-time favourite guitarists. And yes, they are most underrated, and should be far more known than they actually are. So, thanks for that, Levi!
Jack Pearson is so underrated it is criminal. Also, the fact that the guy constantly plays Squier Bullets nowadays is such a slap in the face for gear elitists. I hope Levi Clay sheds light into the skills of Jack sooner or later. Finally, his slide playing sound is the closest to that of Duane Allman in the Brothers.
Since Ive been Lovin has always been my favorite Jimmy Page solos. I feel like the song maybe goes under the radar when it comes to epic Zepp tunes... i guess there are a lot to choose from. Might be my fav Blues solo alll time because of how big of an impact it had on my development as a player. This take on the changes was a master class. Top shelf
From all the dozens of solos i see everyday, how fast, complicated etc etc it is, i never am impressed actually. But this really got me. This is really good! This is music!
What year at Bonnaroo? I was there in 2004 and remembered Warren Hayes playing with The Dead. I was a little "off". Was Jimmy there also? I remember it raining its ass off, right before The Dead took stage. Following Dave Mathews and friends the night before was tough for anyone. The Dead were good. But Dave Mathews and Tim Reynolds playing Dancing Nancies was a highlight in my concert going life. Tim is a monster player
I’ve been seeing Jimmy since I was a kid in high school when he was in “Colonel Bruce Hampton and the aquarium rescue Unit”. His playing has always blow me away. His use of swells in his solo here is insanely cool!
Lucky enough to see Jimmy with Col. Hampton and A.R.U. more times than I can count in the early 90's here in B'ham, AL. I would stand in front Jimmy's amp and have my face melted at The Nick! His work in Jazz is Dead is outstanding... And after He made some amazing music with Phil Lesh Quintet ("the Q") in the early 2000's. You can find all this stuff on RU-vid - including some early A.R.U. Also his album Lifeboat - the title track with Derek Trucks is a thing of powerful beauty! One of my top three favorite guitarists of all time!
Your title description drew me in and you are right! It's a great blending of the two players you mentioned and what a great feel this cat has! Loved it! WOOF!
Love your videos; your opening me up to a whole new world of incredible musicians! Thank you and merry Christmas Levi! ❤ and this guitarist in this video is one of the best tones and phrasing I’ve heard in a long time! Wow! 😮😮😮😮😮😮
He's new to me. Glad this popped up on my suggestions! Thanks for posting it.👍 You did fail to mention his perfect touch with the volume pedal which, along with everything else was impeccable.
I owe you a debt of gratitude for the amount of guitarists you've introduced me to. This guys great! Love the high harmonics he's getting from his bends. Very cool. Gunna have to dive into his stuff when I get home, gigging tonight, it'll be nice to have something to listen too while I'm unable to sleep. 😝😅✌️
@@theofficialdiamondlou2418 it's a thing, I've always had issues with insomnia, but sometimes after a gig it's impossible to shut down. By the time you've figured out all the stuff you did wrong, all the stuff you got right and all the stuff you enjoyed either way, it's probably 3am. 😂🙏✌️😎
@@SeagoGuitarist yep. Same here. My wife has learned ,she just goes to bed and says “see ya tomorrow.” Lol as I review videos and just reflect on the night overall.
This guy was in the Allman Brothers Band also. The ABB has had some of the greatest guitarists of all time in their different lineups over almost half a century.
Probably the best blues rock song of all time ! Would've loved to hear a singer join in ... but yeah ... Jimmy brought the whole package, tone, touch, phrasing, passion and good taste !!!
We opened for Jazz Is Dead in the 90’s and other than being a complete monster on his axe he was a really cool hang…we played football in the hall after the show, so fun. So humble and chill, a wonderful guy.
Lord have mercy! I've been a huge fan of Jimmy playing for years now, what an absolute MONSTER! His diminished side is among the best ive ever heard. this since I've been loving you has been off of my radar somehow. Thanks!
Jimmy Herring did a series if classes at Atlanta Institute of Music years ago and i was lucky enough to be there at that time. What a fantastic guitarist, teacher and person. A really great guy.
That's Jeff Sipe on drums, you know, the guy who played with Shawn Lane. Jimmy plays with Widespread Panic these days. I highly recommend seeing them live.
Oh my that’s the great Jimmy Herring! Aquarium Rescue Unit was the band years ago that turned me on to him! Rest In Peace Colonel Bruce Hampton! Great guy, got to hang with him once with the guys from Matchbox 20 and Sweetvine at a hotel bar!
Jimmy is in My Top 5 of all time....I've been listening and gone to so many of his concerts ....I loved ARU days with the Colonel and all of his side projects....him and Phil fit perfectly together for so many years that to me "He's the Best Jerry Replicator Ever"(My opinion) and now he fits Panic like he owns it....Mikey is Proud
Be sure to check out widespread panic, jimmy’s main gig. Jimmy is the band’s third lead guitarist, so look for live shows and albums released post-2006. Don’t sleep in Mikey’s stuff up until 2002. 2002-2006 didn’t happen.
I saw 'Jazz Is Dead' in NYC in the late '90's and thought Jimmy was the best guitarist I'd ever seen live. And now I'm pretty sure he's the best guitarist I've ever seen on RU-vid.
Thanks for this one Levi, listened to some of the tunes from this concert quite a few times, just great music. Intonation for days ... err ... is that a thing?
So weird,.maybe why this video was recommended, but I was just watching McLaughlin and the 4th dimension w/Jimmy... and yes you're right. Maybe Rosevelt Caulier could go pound for pound, that's it
I went to a HORDE festival tour show in the mid 90’s in B’ham and it was the last show of the tour. Lots of the musicians took turns jamming with the other bands that day just for their own fun I think. Jimmy played with the first band that day, ARU, and I think he ended up playing with every band that came after, 5 more bands if I recall correctly. It seemed like he never left the stage. He’s an amazing musician capable of playing with anyone. I’ve seen him more times than I can remember now but he always put on an amazing performance and everyone he plays with seems to love him.
Too true. Probably the best Jam rock guitarist, nay rock guitarist there has ever been. And a super sweet dude to boot. Had the great luck to have a beer with him at higher ground before a Jazz is Dead show. Lovely human being.
The ol colonel knew what he was doing when he paired O'Teal and Jimmy together. God WHT a duo they were. Jimmy made Panic my favorite jam band, and anything from Lifeboat will impress. Master of the tremolo bar
I first saw Jimmy Herring in August, 2002 when he took the place of Jerry Garcia in the Dead’s first reunion in Wisconsin. As a guitarist, I was blown away at his technique. He was perfect at replicating Jerry’s licks. Such feel with monster tone.
this piece is about 10 more minutes if you look for it = and his own group Widespread panic with tedeschi trucks live is great doing you can't always get what you want- he plays fusion as well- rare player
