This Happened .... When I Over-Inflated a Pop Bottle !

We took Coke bottles, made a stand, attached a gauge and inflated them till they exploded using only a mini compressor from a refrigerator!! Target practice is so much fun and shooting at inflated pop bottles or water bottles is a blast when they explode! It's good to know what these bottles can take before they explode for your own information so you can safely inflate them to get the biggest bang for your buck! Many companies make bottle blasters for target practice which include Big Blast Target Inflator, Mega Boom, Sonic Boom Exploding Target, Airburst Megaboom to name a few.

Just curious what might happen if you completely duct tape a bottle from top to bottom. Would it increase the fail pressure?

Now you should try wrapping it in some duct tape to see if that can strengthen the bottle. XD (I wouldn't use even a regular plastic bottle for an air tank, big safety hazard. But yeah, would be interesting to see if it could hold more pressure with duct tape.)

Nice one! I didn't know fridge compressors gave that much pressure. Now I really want one. I did test a 1,5 liter bottle one time (I have no video of it as it was so long time ago it was before I had a camera) and it gave out at about 1,3 MPa and started to expand while pressure is falling (just like some of them did in the video) and exploded at about 1,1. So it seems to correlate pretty well with this test - the 1 liter bottles took a little more and the 2 liter a little less (smaller ones takes more pressure)
@chrisnotap
@chrisnotap 8 лет назад
+Ride84XL This was such a fun video to do! You never knew when they were going to let go! Yes, those fridge, dehumidifier, a/c, mini fridge compressors will all pump up to high pressure but they do it slowly. Each of the 2L bottles took about 3 minutes to get up to failure. I sped up the video so it wouldn't be boring.

Thank you for conducting this experiment I found it very helpful as I am playing around with "Big Blast" target caps using a foot pedal bike tire pump to inflate them so I have to stand relatively close to the bottles while inflating them. For that reason I felt it might be wise to do a little research to find myself good margin for a "relatively stable inflation point" I really appreciate that you've done the footwork for me so I can more safely spend the time focusing on my archery shot. I used to make soda and other bottles. The threaded area can hold over 500psi. That's how much the machines used to stretch the bottle in to the mold. Slowly heat one with a hair dryer so it shrinks then test it. The 500 psi kabooms are way louder!

@chrisnotap
@chrisnotap 2 года назад
Yes they are!! If I'm not mistaken they can compress air up to around 400psi! How did you go about changing the oil? They don't really need the oil changed. By nature they use oil when used in this way. So you only need a way to check and top up the oil if necessary.
@mathysgobeil1592

@@chrisnotap yes it was originally scavenged off an old freezer upside down in a junkyard so it was already almost out of oil. I drained out all the remaining oil and replaced it with some dirtbike 10w40. I also put a cutted off foam paint roll on the pipe that suck air as an air filter so dust and stuff won’t get in my oil

Very interesting. I've always wondered how much pressure these bottles could hold. It's interesting how consistent the failure of 2L bottles was; they must be molded the exact same with the same plastics, thickness of plastic.
@chrisnotap
@chrisnotap 7 лет назад
+Mike Hauss That's what I thought too that the moulding must be very precise to have them fail at the same pressure. On the shelf at the stores these bottles are at just under 50 psi and you never hear of a bottle failing on the shelf in a store. Back in the day when they used glass, people were lined up with lawsuits with glass shrapnel injuries from bottles blowing up. I bet the number has dropped to zero since the inception of these new PET bottles.

Chris Notap: have you ever tried hyperinflating a bottle like that and then backing off on the pressure? I’m looking to expand the circumference of a pop bottle, and I’m wondering how elastic the plastic itself is. The use I have for it is only for the upper half of the bottle, so I would of necessity be cutting the thing in half. I’ve been thinking about pushing the cut border down over a warmed up cone-shaped item. The only thing that comes Immediately to mind that would be the right shape to do that would be a garden gnome. But I’ve got a compressor and a pressure gauge and some adaptors, So perhaps if I warm the bottle a little bit before hand, this might do the trick a little better again. Any ideas?
@chrisnotap
@chrisnotap 2 года назад
PET is what these are made from. If they are heated they will shrink. Try putting hot glue on an empty one. It will distort and shrink. Putting heat to it under pressure will be difficult to control and could create a weak spot for it to let go. I'm not sure if what you are trying to do can be done with basic things that you and I have. Not much help, I know, but good luck. It's all about experimenting though. Be safe.

Very cool and informative! :) I've been thinking of using extra cardboard from work to build generic cardboard warships. I'd coat them in wax so they would float on my pond without coming apart, and I would add sand inside them in sealed containers (to add some weight.) I was going to use tannerite in them to blow them up from a distance with one of my rifles, but I think one of these 2 liters with about 125psi inside would do the trick! It would be much cheaper than using tannerite, and I could probably make them "pop" using a pellet gun. The 2 liter method would probably make less of a mess as well ;)

Hopefully this message finds you well. Could you tell us how you affixed the bottles to the inflator? I've thought about using valves from bicycle tire inner tubes but I'm not sure what would prevent the valve from flying out of the cap, since it would be friction fit, I believe. I'm only trying to inflate to about 40psi.
@yeldarb141983
@yeldarb141983 6 лет назад
okay, so I'm drawing 3-4 major conclusions from these tests 1) the rounded top two-liters appear to be the safest as the way that they fail is less likely to result in serious injury to anyone nearby, unlike the shrapnel-throwing coca-cola and ginger-ale bottles. Adding a 100 psi failsafe valve (not sure what you call it) is probably a good idea as well. 2) seeing as how even the 'safest' bottles can throw shrapnel sometimes, it might be wise to wrap the bottles in ducktape or some other adhesive material to limit the amount of shrapnel is produced, mmaking sure of course to leave a small area near the top for the bottles to crack as needed for safety's sake. 3) keeping each individual bottle in an array around 100 psi is probably fine, as none of the bottles seemed to blow before they reached 145 psi. 4)further testing on longer storage of air should probably be done to see how well the bottles hold up to a full charge over time.

@zemtek420 8 лет назад
Chris Notap sounds like fun. Ima have to try this and compare. But I am thinking the same thing as you that it should be no difference in decibel level. Unless the carbon dioxide does something funky to where it some how allows the sound to be louder. Be very very very very careful though if you do the dry ice compare. They are highly unpredictable when they go off. Too bad you didn't have a pressure guage that automatically records the exact pressure at which things go pop. How far away from them were you where they blew ? and could you feel a compression wave? I know when I tried the dry ice in the pop bottles it was loud as hell. And you could feel the compression wave from a good 10 feet away. Definitely want to be wearing some good ear plugs if your that close. And if you do try this experiment try it with as many and as large clumps of dry ice you can. Gives you more time to get the cap on once you have the dry ice and water inside.. crushed dry ice blows it rather fast. So fast I had one go off just before it hit the ground about 40 feet away. Too bad you don't have a decibel meter that would be some other cool data you could collect.

How did you make that fridge compressor pop the bottles
@chrisnotap

Fridge compressors have the ability to compress air up to 400PSI.

When these bottles explode, they go off with a very loud bang. When I made this video I had the rig in my garage to prevent shrapnel injury. I closed the doors and waited outside about 20 yards away. It took about 3 minutes to get each one up to pressure before they popped. Every time they exploded, I jumped. I never got used to it. Very loud even outside the garage.

A reference chart @ the end of the video would have been helpful as u didn't mention the litres capacity of each one before popping them,so realistically how many psi is it safe to inflate each size of bottle to? 🤔🤔🤔🤔
@chrisnotap
@chrisnotap 4 года назад
The 2L hold about 50psi sitting on the shelf in the store. That's a safe amount. You could probably go a bit higher without issue as long as it's a fresh new bottle.

Do you guys think that after this video, if you uze extra strengthening methods, could a regular soda bottle hold 40Psi safely?

It would need to experiment.

I took a compressor from a refrigerator. When i started it i see it blowing out clear liquid. Is that oil? Is it ok if i let it run out of it? What happens if it runs out?

I had it set up in my garage, doors closed and I was about 30 feet away outside. Each time a bottle went off it scared me each time. It was very loud! But also a lot of fun!

I don't have a gauge high enough to measure but from what I've read they can go up to between 400 and 500 psi!
