The victims were part of the World Central Kitchen organisation and were trying to deliver aid to the starving population in Gaza. The Israeli prime minister described it as a 'tragic case of our forces unintentionally hitting innocent people in the Gaza Strip'. The WCK said the aid workers were believed to be from the UK, Australia, Poland and Palestine, as well as a US-Canada dual citizen. In a statement, WCK said: 'Despite coordinating movements with the [Israeli army], the convoy was hit as it was leaving the Deir al-Balah warehouse, where the team had unloaded more than 100 tons of humanitarian food aid brought to Gaza on the maritime route.'
