Electric shock therapy being used as treatment for being gay is crazy
@childofcascadia

Right? Orientation cant be changed. I mean, ask those bigoted heteros if they could wake up tomorrow finding the same sex attractive and theyll be like no of course not! Its like then why do you think it possibly worked the other way? *all* higher mammals like apes, dolphins elephants etc have members who prefer the same sex. And lower mammals just kind of get it on with whoevers nearby and willing when they horny. They dont care the sex. Only humans care about it, and pretty much only in certain cultures. Other cultures consider it normal. Its a natural thing of higher mammal species that live in groups and have long "childhoods" with lots of community investment in the offspring that some members will prefer homosexual relations. Biologically if we were still cave people, it makes sense. A gay person would be contributing member of the group, who can help the group raise offspring whos parents die but who themselves arent likely to reproduce. Its normal, its natural, and its no ones business what people do in their private lives.

Years ago I was part of an interesting message board with many regular contributors. One was a young man who told us he was Mormon and gay. He shared his agony on wanting to be part of his religion but knowing if he came out he'd be an outcast. So many people tried to reassure him that there was nothing wrong with him but his guilt and self-loathing over it because of the church teachings was like an endless abyss no one could reach him through. It broke my heart for him. Nice man. I worried about him even years later.

Freedom? You mean going against all the laws of God, right? That's your definition of freedom? We are absolutely incredible as intelligent spirits without a body. We can sing, shout for joy, fight a war, repent of most sins, Christ created heaven and earth as a spirit, we can live and hate, suffer, or be comforted, but we cannot copulalte. We need a body for that. Herein is the reason for mortality. To prove we can be trusted with an immortal body that has sexual organs, like Adam and Eve had, that cannot be killed, even by God. This is the purpose of mortality. We are essaying to be parents or spirit children, who will go through their mortal test on worlds without number, worlds without end. Only an immortal man and woman can have spirit children, so to choose some other idea will mean you cannot be trusted with an immortal body that has sexual organs. A Celestial body is a body that has sexual organs, like Adam and Eve had in the garden of Eden in the presence of God. Sex can be forever, but only between an immortal man and immortal woman. A Terrestrial or Telestial body is an immortal body that has no sexual organs. Considering Satan hates us, he will possess every Mormon who teaches eternal marriage is impossible, like the woman doing this podcast. Like I said, you think your thoughts and feelings originated from you. Satan's biggest weapon is convincing people he doesn't exist

Yep. I grew up Mormon and gay. My teen years as I began to realize were TOUGH. I was deeply depressed and suicidal and I thought that was who I genuinely was. I was actually very fortunate with how accepting my Mormon family was when I came out 18-20. Additionally, I got lucky with my ward being pretty chill with it all. One of our stake presidency members at the time was a prominent psychologist who helped Mormon and gay people (I’ve heard that he’s left the church since). He talked to me and helped me realize that the commandment to love God and your neighbors also included loving yourself, and that I should do whatever I felt right for myself (even if that meant leaving the church). Basically he affirmed that we don’t know the “plan” for everything and to follow what I felt was best for me. It helped give me the permission I needed to stop going to church because it was so immensely triggering and torturous for me. He also helped teach my bishop who to handle it all appropriately, and after I got released from my calling then I have never gone back. And I was never pestered by well-meaning church members to come back. I think the culture is changing, although I don’t know if the doctrine ever will with the leadership. It’s individuals who have loved and cared for and accepted me. I think the biggest problem is that members don’t realize what they’re asking of gay people and can’t separate sexuality from just sexual desire. Also connection comes from authenticity and vulnerability. You can’t be authentic hiding such a big part of who you are out of safety, and therefore you can’t connect authentically with anyone. I’m very grateful for how it all turned out for me, and I am so happy and at peace in my life now. I have a great relationship with myself and my own spirituality now even though I no longer believe in the church.

@@ashleywitt6681I’m not Mormon but have been to Mormon church and have Mormon colleagues. Just like with any fairly conservative religion, the majority (especially older and less open-minded crowds) will be homophobic. Out of the three Mormons I know and see regularly, two are queer, and one is hesitant but accepting. I’m trans and she’s actually asked me some respectful questions about my experience. So, like any organized religion, the scripture and the leaders can say one thing, but there’s always going to be people who ignore that part because they know acceptance is key.
@Quietgarden13
@Quietgarden13 3 месяца назад
@@ashleywitt6681 It’s kind of a nuanced conversation. All religions are complex, but the Mormon church is incredibly complex. The Mormon church has an underlying culture of homophobia for sure 100%. It’s devastating but in some ways it’s not quite as bad as some other religious sects. Remember that Mormons don’t actually believe in a conventional “hell” for regular people where you are tortured forever. The enforcement of rules comes from separation from your family and god in the afterlife. It also comes from the pressure of fellow members, so the flavor of the church can really differ depending on location and the particular people there. I think the thing to remember is that not all Mormons are the same. There are countless interpretations of different teachings and people prioritize the doctrine differently. Some Mormons like the ones from Utah are very rigid and rule-based, but not all Mormons are that way. Also people can learn more, grow, and overcome their homophobia when given the right space to do so. It’s an individual thing, but now unless someone is being disrespectful towards me I tend to just live my life happily and peacefully and hope it opens their eyes over time. (Being able to be around Mormons again took a lot of healing first though). Harshly condemning regular members is typically counterproductive in my opinion because then they get defensive and close down to potentially seeing things differently. It pushes them further into the “cult” than just being calm, kind, and truthful. Besides, while regular members cause harm, the greatest harm is caused by the actual institution and leadership of the church. Everyone has their own journey with it too. I don’t understand it completely but I don’t judge people who are accepting of gay people who stay in the church either, change has to begin from within somewhere. I certainly will not be the person to create that change haha. I hope that makes sense, but overall it’s just complicated and people are people and not a monolith even though it sometimes seems like it.
@Quietgarden13
@Quietgarden13 3 месяца назад
@@ashleywitt6681 I apologize for the long responses but I hope it’s at least interesting. If you’ve always heard the same things said by Mormons about gay people and seen the same attitudes, then it’s likely that they’re parroting what they’ve always heard. What they say or even sometimes how they act may not be 100% accurate to how they feel deep down. LGBT issues are deeply taboo in the Mormon church and are treated with a lot of discomfort and fear. It’s an atmosphere created by the leadership and enforced by other members. Because it is so uncomfortable for Mormons, and because deep down they subconsciously realize that the teachings are contradictory and don’t make sense, out of discomfort or self-protection they’ll usually end up saying the same things over and over again with gay people. “I don’t support the lifestyle” “it’s fine to be attracted to the same-sex but acting on it is a sin” “hate the sin, love the sinner” All these same things are taught over and over again and drilled into Mormons as like a defense mechanism. At stake of not following all of this is their entire world and afterlife. The reason people say Mormonism is a cult besides the weird culty practices is because it consumes your whole life and defines your entire identity and worldview. So to leave the church is to lose your entire family, your friends, community, identity, and the potential to be happy for all of eternity. They cling onto it so hard because their “lives” depend on it. They tamp down their doubt because it’s like death, though it still lingers under the surface. It’s very sad. A lot of Mormons may not be as homophobic deep down as they appear, and the cracks continue to spread through the church because of this issue among others. People feel the greater call to “love others as I have loved you” than to continue the nonsense. You see this kind of behavior around all controversial topics around Mormonism.

At least gay Catholics can hide their sexuality by staying celibate, I think the pressure to get married must be even worse for gay Mormons.

I went to catholic school my whole life. There was a guy one grade below me who was pretty obviously gay. He would get SUPER upset when people would make fun of him for it (because catholics are soooo loving and accepting of everyone...) not because they were making fun of him, but because my school would actually remove him from enrollment and keep the tuition. So everyone who knew him and knew he was actually gay, we would not be able to talk to him about ANYTHING just in case a teacher overheard and could "report his crime" to the principal. Religions touting how "accepting and loving" they are usually aren't. If you are an accepting and loving person, you don't need to tell people about it. Same goes for the church - if you truly were accepting and loving of "all of gods creations" then you wouldn't need to announce it everyday. My friend was gay and in a partnership with a man. They loved each other very much. He from a small town in Southern Utah. He went on a mission and graduated from BYU. His parents never accepted his sexuality which caused him immense pain for his entire life. He took his own life. At his funeral and viewing his parents were horrible to his partner. When I reached his partner in the line he literally collapsed in my arms sobbing. It was horrible.

As a gay trans man, I think it’s a little funny that I exist as a double-edged sword to fundamentalists. I fully look like, act, and present as a man, so any man I’m with is veritably in a gay relationship. But, to these folks, I’m still a “biological woman”. Therefore, I’m not _technically_ breaking any of their doctrines by marrying a (cis) man. If they say otherwise, they’re then implicitly recognizing my identity as a man 😼

In the 80's as a 'Young Woman' (actually 12yrs+) I was repeatedly taught that being gay wasn't real, it was a choice; a sexual sin. Do we think leaders of 80 and 90yrs+ in the church really believe otherwise? Today they acknowledge being gay as real now only because they have to. Then discriminates and hurts them as before. I am in equal measures angry, sad, exasperated. Sending ❤ to the LGBTW+ community.

I see the religion’s reasoning for delaying baptism in this way: Here is a religion teaching a child that one or both of the parents is engaged in evil behavior. The religion could be accused of alienating the child and the parent; therefore, the religion did not permit the child to join until age eighteen to avoid that accusation.
