[Long comment ahead] What I love about this episode is that it subverts your expectations. Since it’s titled, “Hell,” you assume that the *game* is hell, but it’s the *life outside the game* instead. And every reactor I’ve watched so far always assumes that the old man is going to vote green, but he chooses red and I love how shocked everyone gets. And unlike other death game stories like Hunger Games, everyone who is still alive gets to actually leave, which is so unexpected. We expect to just see each episode cover each game but the route they took is so much more interesting. And because their individual circumstances are so horrible and they all desperately need money, they volunteer to go back despite knowing that they could easily die. It’s incredible and unpredictable, which makes for very compelling storytelling. And I think you guys are too harsh on Gihun. As the recruiter mentioned after the card flipping game in the first episode, Gihun did have a stable job before for years but he was unfortunately laid off. Then he tried to start 1 business, which failed, then he tried again with another business, which also failed. All of this ultimately led to him being in severe debt, which he thought he could pay off if he got lucky gambling, leading him to gain a gambling addiction. During these COVID times, a lot of people are in a position like Gihun, losing their job/business, being forced to move back in with family since they can no longer afford to live on their own, and gambling in an impossible lottery to no longer be in severe debt. It makes Gihun realistic and gives his character more depth. And at least Gihun is *trying* to be a good dad to his daughter and son to his mother. He’s realized the error of his ways when he chose red during the vote, thinking that the money in the piggy bank isn’t worth it, and exhausted all options to get the money to pay for his mom’s surgery, asking his friend and even his ex-wife for help, until his only choice left is to go back and win the games. It’s important to note that he missed the birth of his daughter *due to his coworker dying.* That’s really traumatizing. And his mom never mentioned her failing health and her foot to him, opting to keep the pain and suffering to herself. My uncle was like that too, unfortunately. He never mentioned he was sick with cancer until it was too late and he passed away a couple months ago. Some people just don’t like admitting that they need help. And Gihun was about to gratefully accept the stepdad’s help until the guy said he couldn’t see his daughter anymore, which is so uncalled for. The stepdad doesn’t get to decide that, the daughter does. That’s her birth father, she gets to decide if she wants to cut off contact with him. And clearly that’s not the case, as she does care about her dad, otherwise she wouldn’t have tried cheering him up in the first episode when they’re eating dinner. A deadbeat dad/son wouldn’t care at all about the harm he’s caused or the people he’s hurt and would have completely abandoned them ages ago. Yes, Gihun has made irresponsible financial decisions but his heart is in the right place. And if anything, this show teaches us to be more responsible with our money. Also, if you didn’t notice, Sangwoo was going to commit suicide in the bathtub. He’s burning coal on a briquette stove that emits carbon monoxide which would quickly and painlessly kill you. It’s the most common form of suicide in Korea. And he was filling the bathtub with water so he could drown himself just in case the poisonous gas didn’t work. And he’s still wearing a suit because that’s the image he holds himself to, the successful SNU graduate, the person Gihun and his mom know him as. So whoever finds his dead body would have gotten that image of him as well. It’s really sad and many reactors I’ve seen make jokes at this moment when it’s really inappropriate. All the characters have their own background and you really feel how hopeless and helpless they all are. It really is hell for them outside of the games. That’s why they all go back.

About the instant ramen. It's meant to be eaten cooked (with hot water) but turns out a lot of people eat it raw in pieces as if they were doritos. I hate it, but my bf (chinese) loves it, and his sister too. I've met a few friends who also like it.

I've been living in SK for over 5 years now :) Just wanted to let you know that household debt in South Korea is one of the highest in the OECD countries. A lot of the debt you see mentioned in the show is real and portrays reality of living in SK. For the main character's mother saying that she no longer pays insurance. That's a huge deal because SK healthcare is extremely cheap (if you are insured). It means that his situation is seriously bad. Also, Ali is speaking in simple Korean. It's to portray that he is a migrant. The way he speaks is very formal and simple.

Sangwoo did graduate top of his class from SNU: That wasnt a lie. He does work in corporate, that's true as well, it's the whole stocks, embezzlement etc that he's hiding- "White colar crimes"

I think it's important to understand that the people who created the game gave the players the illusion of choice knowing that they are that desperate to return this is why they targeted them in the first place. Manipulation at it's finest 👌

Firstly, well done guys for listening to it in Korean with the subs' on, it is totally different and has more emotion to it. Yes the hype is real. Hey guys love your stuff I just wanted to make sure you notice that Sang-Woo was more than just down in the trenches when he was in the bathtub. The thing that he was burning on the stove on the bathroom floor was a brick of charcoal and he was killing himself in the bathtub by smoke. It was like the Squid people's surveillance was so good that they knew right at that moment to call. I mean what better timing than that to invite someone to a death game.

Also that scene of Sangwoo in the bathtub, he was about to commit suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning, that's why they showed the coal stove. It's a common method in Asian countries which is why lots of views don't catch that.

I really like your reactions. However, I haver a different view of The player who seem like a dead beat dad. He represented how life circumstances can have a significant impact. He had a job for 16 years; a wife and a child; through no fault of his he was fired; he started two businesses that failed; he was working but not bringing in enough money to live a long so at 47 years old he moved in with his mother. He probably took up gambling hoping to bring more money into the house. But he now has a gambling addiction. The game was designed to prey on people who have little choice but to play. Much like capitalism

It's hard to judge the actions of these people, cause while their debt is most likely their fault (in some cases) once you get in a little debt it's a downward spiral. Deadbeat should stay with his mom and take care of her, but if he does that the mob will break into his house and take his kidneys, they already promised they would and on top of that he still won't be able to pay for her treatment. He has no choice but to return to the game. Same with the Smart guy with the glasses, he would likely be killed or imprisoned for life if he doesn't join the games. There is no out for these people even if they wanted to turn a new leaf.

She is a super model, that is what she was known for, but she was casted for this role and she did an amazing job at her debut. According to her she had some struggles, which is normal, since it was her first time acting, but she said that was lucky to have experienced actresses and actors in the cast who helped her to overcome those struggles.
