So cool to see Borodante getting some love from other high profile channels! He's one of my favourite youtube artists and his app is incredible for a one man project (scratch that, it's just incredible, period).

Been subscribed to boro since his second video. I like that he talks about concepts and is always experimenting and not scared to branch out to completely different skills to solve his problems. He deserves the world. When he first introduces the app I was a little jealous on all the apple users. I mean...I can use proper photoshop on my surface but, it's not comfortable to draw on it in laptop mode and you don't have access to all the keyboard shortcuts having a painting app that works intuitive like that would be awesome...if it's able to be fit (completely not half-ass I'm lookingat you clipstudio) flippable for left-hand use it'd be a dream. Photoshop is versatile but it is kinda clunky if use it with a keyboard.

In all fairness, ArtStudio Pro can be made to control flow by swiping up and down and brush size by swiping left and right using touch gestures. A hidden gem of ArtStudio Pro. The biggest downsize of that app is its very poor documentation. Procreate leads in this area hands down with their free ebook. Not to say they’re quite active on Twitter and there are a ton more of tutorials on using it. Better PR overall I would say. For ArtStudio Pro, Borodante is one of the main promoters that I know of and they should probably pay him for it, if not doing it already. Steve Elliot also has a fair number of tuts on various iPad painting apps, including ArtStudio Pro...

Thank you for this really nice review. So cool to see someone gushing about Boro as I do ;) ♥ I bet that Adobe has developers with great ideas. But these individuals are not the only ones in the team. Most of the time the developers do not decide where they get to make a single button. Lots of the times a product owner (or customer) decides those things and these decisions are bespoken between them and the people who have the money for the project. And when the significant other of this person has something to say about the product this will be implemented too ;) Practical ideas of a single person with an actual need are oftentimes overlooked because of reasons like "nobody implements it that way" or "we always did it like this" or "we have no competition in this field anyway so why bother?". Boro knew what he wanted and had no one to hold him back.
@AdamDuffArt
@AdamDuffArt 4 года назад
Absolutely - it's such a diluted production process. And the bigger the expectations, the more "voices" jump into the development process, which can be devastating. It often leads to a very diluted and unfocused product like this iteration of PS.

I agree with you completely. It's so intuitive to use. It's too limited for me at the moment and even with the flow on the highest you have to be careful how big you go with a brush to avoid steps, but I bought it anyway as an investment in his project. It is the way a UI should be built.

Some of the Comments seems to be taken it amiss that Boro Dante created an App and then using -instead of his own creation- “Art Studio Pro” for his Work. Well, the way i see it “Craft” is not an ready App, challenging the rest of the World, but an Projekt in Development, like how it should have been if we have started on the right Foot before. So it doesn’t matter if he uses some of the apparent still overwhelming Features of the leading Apps until he is capable to add them in further Updates. Provided he continues the Projekt! Unto we know that for sure i wholeheartedly will support his efforts.

I agree that it is exciting he developed it, and has potential. However, it seems to lack updates/development since its initiation, which is a shame. For me, a big user of the iPad Pro, my favorites are 1. Clip Studio Pro, for its wealth of features, its customizability and brush engine (blending!) - I can do everything in this app 2. Procreate, for its smoothness, get out of your way UI and flow 3. Art Studio Pro, which is kind of like a medium between the above, with more filters and photography functions (most photoshop like app)

When you say that thing about Photoshop being the industry standard, I always think that yes, it is, but not the ultimate standard, it is the base standard and from there many developers and creators are doing very good stuff. And then, you don't go to the base, you look to the top apps like Procreate and this one you are reviewing and many others that serves very well for professional creators. Times are changing and adobe and wacom products are no longer the only option for us professional creators.

Amazing how one guy just manages to make it right and Adobe has been bragging about Photoshop on the iPad for a couple of years and it's still completely useless when it gets released. To continue your rant, the worst thing is that Adobe has started bringing back stupid features from their iPad app to the desktop program and forces users to re-learn things they have spent decades getting used to...and that for NO GOOD REASON. (like "fixed scaling" which even initially was different for every layertype, forced multiple undos - which all ready existed if you needed it, etc etc..) and it takes months of nagging on their bug report forums before they give users a way to go back to how it was. SOon they will place colorpicker on "I" for desktop as well, with no way to change it - I wouldn't be surprised.

The Key ist not that “David and Goliath” Syndrome. Nor that “ADOBE! See what a single Man can do - while You ADOBE, with all your Resources, failed.” No, that’s not. Thought, when he came out with “Craft”, I felt an nasty Delight, an malicious joy besides an distant Hope. In my Opinion, it is the seldom Opportunity that a professional successful Designer allows us an Insight of how he works, his Technics and Workflows. His Thoughts about it, doing comments while he is working and weighting the Pros in Cons without answering the Question about the Meaning of the Universe. He did it, (“Craft”) -as it seems- in not more then 2 or 3 Month. Wow! (Not that it matters when he took more.) And, by starting to create his own App with Lines like “how it should be” he even dropped his Trousers a bit more. Because now we beginn to know what is important to him in digital Painting. And, if He -and i really hope that- continues with Updates adding this or that more, if he has the strengths to go on with this sophisticated attempt: we will have a Priority List of his Vision. Well, there are many different Approaches to Painting, digital or not. So many Stiles, so many unpainted Pictures, so many undiscovered Worlds inside. But... that “Priority” List is not an individual Taste. It will matter to all of us. Summa cum laudium or something like that.

No. Not 20 years, ago. Still a whole lot of dedicated Photography people who use both Lighroom and Photoshop on a daily, regular basis. Also, I've seen Photographers still using Apple Aperture! Photoshop still serves more than one type of master. Just because WE, as digital artists, use Photoshop as an art creation tool, doesn;t mean its original intent is NOT still being used today! Lots of Photography users still use Photoshop for all of the Photoshop image retouching and image manipulation tools. Come on! Photoshop is still being used as Photoshop!

Lightroom and Photoshop on the desktop are very, very different from their implementations on iPadOS though. That's as true for photographers as it is for artists, illustrators and designers. I do not find Photoshop for the iPad to be useful as it stands now for any of the above. It isn't usable for image post-processing and retouching, because the most basic feature of all - the ability to open Camera RAW files - was left out. That's a huge problem for photographers and retouchers who mostly work with RAW files to preserve image quality. It makes it completely unusable in my photography post-production workflow. How Adobe could leave Adobe Camera RAW out of Photoshop for the iPad is beyond me. Photoshop still has its photography user base on the desktop, sure, but the iPad iteration isn't any more useful for serious photographers than for serious artists, IMHO. Add to that a very unpopular subscription model and it's a recipe for a failed app. I'd say the rating for it in the app store pretty much backs that up. Everything that Adam has said from the art side for the iPad version of Photoshop holds true for me, as well. Adobe really missed the mark with this release of Photoshop for the iPad, leaving pretty much every segment of its target audience with a sub-par feature set. That's not a good thing, by any means. I was really looking forward to Photoshop on the iPad, for image post-processing in particular, as well as some art and design tasks, but that excitement came and went pretty quickly when the app was launched. I chose to pass. As far as Photoshop as an art creation tool (desktop version), my feelings have always been mixed. There are some things I prefer doing in Photoshop, but painting isn't necessarily one of them. I know some artists love painting in Photoshop and they swear by it. And, it's the industry standard. That said, as well as I know the app, I've never found the interface to be as well designed for my workflow as I would like. The best painting experience I ever got in Photoshop was back when the Deep Paint plugin was still around (late 90's/early 2000's), but once Painter finally introduced layers, it became obsolete. Today, there are other apps that I enjoy digitally drawing/painting in more on both the desktop and the iPad, because they were designed specifically with art in mind and they provide a more natural workflow for artists and illustrators. So, I agree with you there. That said, having used Photoshop since the first version back in 1991, we have definitely come a long way from where we started and Photoshop for the desktop is far from the app it started as. Hopefully, we'll continue to see a lot more development with the art apps on the market (for both desktop and iPad) in the years to come... ideally without forcing an unpopular and unsustainable subscription model on the community. I love that some of the best art app developers out there right now are rejecting that model in favor of a one-time, or one-time per major upgrade, payment model. Even Corel Painter, which is by no means cheap (even on Black Friday - lol), is available without a subscription.

Adobe has become incredibly overpriced and unfortunately more faulty in every update. I have to use Premiere (which keeps crashing more and more recently) and the new Scale tool in Photoshop has been changed, now doesn't need the Shift key to scale proportionally but if you have to swap to Illustrator ( which I usually have to) is not the same and you have to press Shift again... These inconsistencies makes me really frustrated sometimes and wonder what is the point of this? And yes definitely will try this new app!

lol, it was originally created for APPLE believe it or not. I think that by now they know that every art/animation/fantasy art studio on the PLANET uses Photoshop - they're just too overwhelmed with politics to do it properly in my opinion. Besides, they have Lightroom that's exclusively for Photographers - Photoshop is the hybrid that bridges all of these skills.

@@AdamDuffArt That's what I meant. If Photoshop isn't going to be focused on drawing and painting, Adobe either needs to come up with something new or take another look at Fresco. I think the Photoshop app is doing a disservice to both parties it's meant for.
@darrenalbertson-digitaldus6227
@darrenalbertson-digitaldus6227 4 года назад
It’s obvious Photoshop for the iPad was not made for painters, at least yet. That’s why they released Fresco, for better or worse. Continuing the comparative rant about it at this point is banal. While Boro has hit on some really good ideas that you demonstrated, he doesn’t use his own app in his videos because of lack of features. I got it to help him out, but it’s pretty light weight to really getting anything done effectively, unless sizing your brush and color picking without looking all day is one’s idea of productivity. And Boro himself disagrees with all the shade being thrown at PS for iPad and takes a much more pragmatic approach about how it’s not made for painting, and how it’s all been structured to work with PS, Lightroom for iPad (which negates the working with RAW images issues), and Fresco: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N2hqpGnlI5Y.html

You DO realise that Photoshop is just NOT a painting or a drawing app, don’t you? Photoshop is mainly a photo/image editing app, first! I has always been this way. It is Adobe PHOTOSHOP! NOT Adobe PAINTSHOP! Painting artist just tend to use Photoshop as a sketching a painting app, but this a ONLY one facet of Photoshop. You want a dedicated painting app, then you should be looking at Procreate, ArtStudio Pro, ArtRage and the brand new Adobe Fresco!
@AdamDuffArt
@AdamDuffArt 4 года назад
Maybe 20 year ago - but now it's the core drawing/painting app in every studio worldwide - it's the industry standard art app for illustrators and cartoonists and comic artists alike. In fact, there are several celebrated "traditional" style digital painters like Michael Kutsche that originally worked in Corel Painter and eventually transitioned their work flow to Photoshop for that reason.
