Genuine question: Who actually gets regular use out of their iPad? Or is it just that it’s got a bigger screen than your phone? With so many iPads to choose from at the moment, here’s my reasoning that, actually, the iPad Mini is the only one you need in 2023.

I've used a 12.9" iPad Pro (2018) almost every day since I bought it in 2019. I bought it as a note-taking device for college and work, and now I use it as an e-reader, personal TV at the gym, to play games, and basically as my travel laptop. I use it with the Magic Keyboard sometimes and just a folio case other times. It's one of my favorite devices. EDIT: Yes, all-in, it was about $1,800. I regret nothing.

I’ve been using my 11” iPad Pro constantly since it came out, including upgrading to the M1 version. I use it for everything… Social media, writing and spreadsheets, video editing, photo editing, scanning every piece of paper that comes into my house into Goodnotes and on and on and on. I also bought a used Mini 4 for the other day to see if it seemed useful, and I absolutely love it. I think I’ll upgrade to a Mini 6 but I will still keep the 11 inch as my main desktop workhorse.

I could not agree more that the iPad mini is the best choice. I have both the mini and the larger iPad Air. I use the mini 75% of the time. The best part of the mini is that you can hold it easily with one hand which makes it very comfortable to use when you are lying down on a couch or bed. It is so easy to travel with. I am thrilled to hear that Apple is working to upgrade the Mini, which I will definitely consider buying when it is released.

I do not agree. But I guess a lot of people would agree with you. But for me I guess it is because I never been that smithen with smartphones even though I use them. And I always like bigger screens. But right now I use a midversion the 10 inch and that one could be a better compromise with a larger screen than the mini but for from the size of a pro. For me mini is just to small.
@Mehwhatevr
@Mehwhatevr 6 месяцев назад
@@hurmur9528 To each their own. :) I don't think anyone argues that the iPad mini 6 is the right choice for absolutely everyone or that it's superior in every single way. I think it's like the 13" MacBook&MacBook Air of iPads. any iPad larger than that is probably being used by pros and people who dabble in pro stuff. Or not being used at all. For me, I never used my iPad because of its size. by the time I start carrying around a 10" iPad in a backpack, I might as well just use my laptop. Better performance and better operating system for what I do. I was afraid the iPad mini 6 would be too small, but it ended up being perfect.
@hurmur9528
@hurmur9528 6 месяцев назад
@@Mehwhatevr Yes I understand your point. But I just do not see it like that. My phone is enough for my day to day use. And I do not want to overuse it so I even have a smaller one than I am comfortable with just because I do not like taking up the phone all the time. My most used screen on leisure is my TV since it is superior in quality to anything else I have. TV is also much more social in a family than the smaller screens. Regarding work it is more complicated. I simple do not want to bring work to my home so I have strict uses there. If I work from home instead at the workplace though I have a job computer. That one I only use for that and only for that. I do not want to mix things up. So in the end I find the 10 inch just enough enough portable and still very user friendly with a connected keyboard (also as a protective shield for the screen since I have kids).

I couldn’t agree more, adding the iPad Mini into my daily lineup has been game changing. Having this, an Apple Watch Ultra (Cellular), and an iPhone 13 Mini (Wi-Fi), I feel like when I’m home my phone just collects dust on my nightstand, and when I’m out and about I have content downloaded to my iPad Mini, have my watch for checking notifications/communicating with people, and my phone only comes out of my pocket on a rare occasion to capture a moment or mindlessly scroll social media for a few minutes. 10/10 recommend the iPad Mini!

I have a 4th gen iPad air, and I use it for… Well, a lot of things. Watching any type of content is perfect on an 11 inch screen, drawing is also really pleasant, nomad sculpt also delivers a great sculpting experience to an iPad (though if you are going to take sculpting seriously, you might consider buying iPad Pro, as, even with my low effort sculpts, it still lags quite a bit). iPad is also amazing for studying: checking your marks, making ToDo lists, reading books and even doing notes and homework. If you want a perfect all-in-one solution to study, watch content and draw/sculpt, I think iPad is a great choice!

I got a 12.9 iPad about 2 years ago and barely used it for a while. Then I got the Magic Keyboard and I’ve been using it everyday since then. I honestly couldn’t imagine a day going by without using it. I work from home and mostly use it to time myself to make sure I’m completing tasks in a reasonable time limit. I also am constantly streaming things that aren’t too distracting…… Spotify, Netflix, RU-vid… etc. It’s not feasible to try to use the iPad while working without a keyboard. There are too many steps that come with using it that makes it more of a distraction. Having it with a keyboard puts everything’s within easy reach.

The mini 6 is perfect for me to keep with me as I roam around the house. It’s the perfect size for being online, using social media, reading, or even taking calls of I have to. It really meets almost all my needs. I have a MacBook Air for when I need a laptop, and the mini for when I don’t. It doesn’t pretend to be a laptop like other iPads. Plus it’s great to travel with. I get your point.. but lets just think logically. Although iPad mini doesnt pretend to be a laptop like other iPads, it pretends to be like iphone pro max or iphone plus but with less advanced cameras. It doesnt have a big retina screen unlike other ipads so videos consuming is not that enjoyable. Yeah, It is super portable because of his size.. but if the philosophy is - the smaller the better - get the iphone mini and you wont even know you have it in your pocket. I really think the only iPad worth of buying is base model ipad 9gen. For less money than iPad mini, you get more real estate for watching videos. So better value for your money. And thats my whole point basically.. in this world, you gotta be smart with your hard earned money.

It’s use is purely recreational. I have a m2 air and iPhone 13 Pro for professional matters. In turn, my iPad doesn’t se any emails, isn’t signed into iMessage, etc. with the 4 being unsupported and getting a bit laggy, a 6 was a no brainer when I saw them for 399 on Amazon. It’s done a great job where the 4 left off. I also got a knock off pencil for $20 and decent folio case to prop it up. I had to go with the Air 5. Bought both it and the mini, which I REALLY wanted to enjoy, but the text was just too small for me on the mini. When I needed too use Split View or trying to read contents of a widget, I noticed when testing out both, I tended to get headache with the mini. Shame because I really wanted it to be the one I kept. Air 5 has been great thus far though.

yeah this was ultimately my issue with the mini as well! the text was just too tiny for my terrible eyesight, and unfortunately iOS doesn't allow you to globally increase the display zoom in the way android and windows does. :(

I'm a harpist and use my 12.9 almost daily as I digitized my entire sheet music library. I use ForeScore and it's an amazing sheet music app. However, that's about all I use it for. I bought a mini 2 weeks ago and use it more than my iphone now. I draw with Procreate, I play way more games than is healthy, and I use a lot of productivity apps as well. I love this silly thing. However - I really wish the mini had two features - faceID and wireless charging. Then it would be the perfect device.

I had my MacBook since 2018 and never thought I would get an iPad. I used a mini one at school because we were given one each but obviously we had to give it back when we left the school. For my first year at vet school I just had my laptop but saw so many other people with iPads and thought I would take the leap. I got a refurbished one that was a pretty old model and now at the end of my second year I don’t know how I lived without it. It hasn’t replaced my laptop for writing lecture notes but the ability to take my iPad into dissections and annotate photos of specimens has been invaluable. In the revision season I haven’t even been taking my MacBook to uni. I am glad I didn’t get a fancier model tho because I really wouldn’t have needed that

Great review Pete, thank you. Can I just ask, would you use the iPad mini as an alternative to the Samsung fold five - i.e., alongside an existing iPhone. Clearly you would have two devices but I am trying to figure out whether I should go down the android route and buy fold 5 or stick with my iPhone and get iPad mini - I already have the pro but it is rather heavy. What do you think?

As a student, I find it extremely useful to annotate lecture slides directly as opposed to having to carry a laptop, stationary and foolscape papers to class every day. I’ve been using computers (Windows and Mac but mostly Mac) intensively since 1985 and I find the iPad far better than anything else I’ve used in that time. I use it for writing, banking, internet perusal, video streaming via Chromecast, YouTubing, etc., etc., ad infinitum. It’s very portable and lacks the ‘clunkiness’ of a full laptop. The quality of the screen display is first class. I would have bought the latest iPad Pro 12” except for the poor reviews it has been getting and I’ll wait for Apple to get its act together before upgrading. Laptops are like dinosaurs by comparison. 2021 iPad Pro 11” here. I bought it to be my book writing device, with the too expensive Magic Keyboard of course. A perfect thing to disconnect me from the usual environment of my work laptop or gaming pc and help me focus on the main thing. Though now after using it for quite a while, I find myself preferring this thing as the take-along device over the laptop on any day. I understand why Apple might never do it, but I would very much like them to bridge the software gaps between the macbooks and the ipads and simply leave it to a “form factor of a choice” decision for the users. I would be the first one to ditch the macbook :D

The Mini has been my only choice since it was first introduced. I currently have a Mini 5 and it’s my most used possession. I use it for nearly everything from entertainment to serious writing and budget keeping. I watch streaming tv on it, I read books, I keep a diary, I listen to music, I watch (and learn from)RU-vid videos on it. I use it at least 5 hours a day. As you say, it’s the perfect size (almost exactly the dimensions of a hard cover book). I don’t usually take it with me out of the house - that’s what my iPhone is for. But at home, it’s the iPad Mini all the way (and only occasionally, my Macbook Pro). If there was a fire and I could only take one thing out of the house with me (other than my pets), it’d be my Mini.

ve been using the 2018 iPad Pro 11" since its release and absolutely loved it. However, my sons very basic iPad recently zonked out so I decided to snag the new 12.9" M2 and give him my 2018. I will agree that the form factor is a bit wonky in comparison to the 11" or the mini but to be honest once I got over its girth is when my perception completely changed. For me personally I don't think I will be going back (unless a comparable iPad foldable is released) bc to me the iPad mini is very close in size to my iPhone Pro Max. So far there has not been any situations where the size was a disadvantage, in fact it's been advantageous in every way from gaming, video editing, picture editing, browsing the web, multi tasking etc. Also I use a peak design everyday back pack and so when I'm traveling with it my flow has not changed, in terms of weight its negligible as well when stowed away in my backpack. I think if you are the type to walk out the door just carrying your iPad, or the type to mostly sit on the couch and read it like a book or play a game.. Then perhaps the mini or the 11" is the sweet spot. For anything else 12.9"
