Everyone is justifiably impressed by Rick's ability to come back like he did. And so am I. But you gotta respect the other band members for stopping work and waiting for him to recover and learn to play again. I'm not sure many bands would have done that.
That's mainly because the band DIDN'T stop working. They continued working on their studio album right after the accident as they figured that's what Rick would have wanted them to do. To Rick's amazing credit, he was hitting the drums again 8 weeks after they removed his arm. Amazing.
Well said....We thought back in the day when Rick was seriously injured/almost died from his auto accident that would be it for Def Leppard, but they stuck by him and got bigger and better with him..
This song is from the album "Pyromania" (1983)... The whole album is Great! Not a bad song on it... They had 5 radio hits off this album... "Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)", "Photograph", "Too Late for Love", Foolin'", and "Rock of Ages". The album after this was "Hysteria" (1987) Rick had his accident in 1984... the long pause was due to him recovering and learning to play again. Hysteria is another album that is great front to back. They had SEVEN radio hits off this album... "Women", "Rocket", "Animal", "Love Bites", "Pour Some Sugar on Me", "Armageddon It", and "Hysteria".
Lol, a radio station in the States was taken over by the DJ (I guess he had a nervous breakdown) and played Def Leppards Rock, Rock, til you Drop repetitively for several hours! Lol. I seem to recall hearing about it on the news as a teen.
I think that they had actually reacted to a couple of songs from Def Leppard's Hysteria album, especially since Jordan keeps referencing the fact that Rick Allen still had both arms in this video and when they reacted to "Bringing On The Heartbreak"
This song is a masterpiece!!! It never gets old and is so rich and complex! And it’s one of the most important songs in their catalogue. I would go as far to say it’s what made the majority of US fans fall in love with them!
Agreed. This song coming over the Top 40 airwaves for the first time in '83 sounded like a revelation! I'd never heard anything like it and knew it was something special. It's what got me into them, for sure.
Im 34 right now but when I was 29, I literally made a hand cuff leather belt, bought a union jack tank top, leather pants, leg warmers, and made the torn white frill around his neck and Halloween 2018 went out as Joe Elliot in Photograph. I think im gonna bust it out in 2023 Halloween .. if I can still fit into the pants XD.
First album I ever bought, when I was 13. Still have the LP. Only time my father ever told me to "turn that sh*t down!" (and he likes some classic rock).
This is the first song I ever heard by Def Leppard way back in 1983. I was in Grade 10. I heard it on the radio and was mesmerized by the harmonies. I'd never heard anything like it. (Thank you, Mutt Lang.) I rushed out and bought the 45 and I've been a fan for life.
probably one of my favorite Def Leppard songs, I was in 8th grade in 1983 so you are 2 years older than me Great time for music was when we were growing up in the 70's and 80's
@@mikey7189 - Yeah, I'm 56 about to turn 57 in march. If you still like that kind of music, I highly recommend a band called "Crazy Lixx." They often should like Def Leppard with their harmonies. In fact, they just released a KISS cover of the song below and I thought the lead singer sounded a lot like Joe Elliott on the verses. Check it out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7RRFicG0RoA.html
Damn. I was 21 years old and serving in the US Air Force when this came out. It’s been a while as I just turned 60. LOL! This takes me back to my youth and all the things I did, and people and friends I knew then. It makes me smile, but makes me a bit sad too. Thanks for doing this reaction. Be well and God Bless.
I live in Kansas. We have the State Fair here every year. One year Def Leopard came to entertain us at the Grandstand in the Fairgrounds . Def Leopard put on a terrific show. No doubt about it. What I enjoyed almost as much as the show was - how annoyed, irritated and shocked the non rock fans were about how loudly the band played . They played like they were at the Forum East in 1970! They were all a little heavier and some sightings of gray hair were rumored to have been seen. But they played and sang the same as if it were still the 80’s. It was a fun night that was had by all rock fans that night.😎💋
Steve Clarke is often overlooked as a great guitar player. He contributed so much to the band's sound and music. Just a tortured tragic soul, gone far too soon. 🎸.
Clarke was Def Leppard's principal song writer (shared fairly equally with Pete Willis until his firing, and after that (really from "Pyromania" until his death), he easily did the lion's share of songwriting). By anyone who is a fan of Def Leppard, he is far from underrated either as a guitarist or anything else :)
Mutt Lange produced Def Leppard, he also wrote a lot of songs. He also produced some songs for AC-DC (back in black album), Foreigner, The Cars, Michael Bolton and he launched the career of Shania Twain. Check out Loverboy "Lovin every minute of it", he wrote it for Loverboy. It sounds very Def Leppard
They still tour! One of the greatest performing bands I've ever seen. Great, Great show! Every song on their play list is a banger! I've seen them live at least 6 times and I have tickets for the upcoming concert of Def Leppard/Motley Crue/Poison/Joan Jett here in Phoenix next year! You've got to see them live! 🎶🎸💞
I remember as a teenager when the album Pyromania came out and was totally blown away by it. Also someone who is now in my 50s and getting old. Seeing people a lot younger than me getting that same rush of excitement, listening to music I grew up on. Brings back so many memories of that teenage Yorkshire lad, long hair and tight scraggy Jean jacket and pants. Feeling that same rush I got then and still now. This video made me smile and brought a little tear. Thank you much love to you and your family. ❤
I’ve loved Def Leppard since I first heard “Bringing On The Heartache” thank you very much for that reaction. I agree “Photograph” really shows us Joe Elliot’s vocal range. They are still together and will most like return to touring next year. (If I am wrong please let me know.) It was so emotional for the band when they were Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It was so awesome to be there. Joe Elliot sings better than ever and the rest of band are still amazing. My favorites are “Love Bites” and “Too Late for Love”. Thank you very much.
Im 34 right now but when I was 29, I literally made a hand cuff leather belt, bought a union jack tank top, leather pants, leg warmers, and made the torn white frill around his neck and Halloween 2018 went out as Joe Elliot in Photograph. I love Def Leppard. I saw them in concert with Toto and Foreigner, and when I was a kid in the early 80's, when I used to fly to Florida to see my grandparents, I would cue up the Pyromania album on my yellow Sony Sport Walkman so that at the exact moment during Photograph when Joe Elliot sang "You've gone straight to my head....." the plane took off... It's the little things.
Remember going to Walmart back in the late 90’s to pick something up for my wife. It was crowded as hell. Got out and worked my way forward thinking it was a giveaway or promotion thing only to see it was a band getting ready to perform. . Just then, Def Leppard started to sing Photograph. I stayed for the whole show and got scolded for getting home late. I watched the whole dang show. Totally awesome and free!!! Great band!!!
Yes that's about Marylin Monroe. I remember when they 1st came out, you knew this was the next great band. Seen them a few times in concert. One of the best concerts I'd been to. Had 8th row. They've never stopped putting out new music. I love their newer songs too. One of my favorite bands. Probably in the top 2 or 3
They still tour! And have barely lost a step. I've seen them in each of the past decades (80's, 90's, 2000's and 2010's). Each show was beyond the price. Just fantastic!
I was so at the perfect age when Def Leppard came to be. I was a young teenager..born in 72!! So was a Def Leppard fan since their existence!!! Still am!!!
About damn time! There are two kinds of Def Leppard fans: those who believe Pyromania is the beginning of “hair band” Def Leppard, and those who understand CORRECTLY that Pyromania is the pinnacle of “old school” Def Leppard. The entire Pyromania album rocks, and this track is the best. BRILLIANT!
Not taking anything away from the insane adversity Rick Allen overcame to continue drumming, but if you all want AMAZING rock drumming, y'all need to listen to some Rush. Don't know if you've ever reacted to them, but Neil Peart will knock your socks off! "Spirit Of The Radio, "Subdivisions", "Tom Sawyer", "Red Barchetta", etc, they're ALL fire!
Oh my goodness!!!!! I saw them in concert in their first tour when Allen had 2 arms. I love love love the group Lover Boy . These big hair bands was what I partied to all through the 80s! Great music never goes away. Now you know why us old people have been listening to this music since we were teenagers!
I think this is the first song I ever heard from them and it is still my favorite. The five of them are firing on all cylinders. "Foolin" is another great song, as is "Hysteria" the title track from their subsequent album. Two great early Leppard songs are "High and Dry" and "Me & My Wine." As for their penchant for wearing the Union Jack, Joe Elliot says they picked up a bunch of those shirts and shorts when they were leaving the UK for their first tour of America, and it became their trademark. -JR in Miami
I'm so proud to have Def Leppard to be on the air waves during my High School years...cause they have everything you could want in a Rock Band! Class of '84
When someone asks me who was my #1 favorite band in the 80's ... I say Def Leppard. And that says A LOT, considering I could identify about 2,000 bands from that decade (my teenage years). All of Def Leppard's hits were jams, and they had the most hits on any one album, and several hit albums (or tapes, that you would play in your car, driving around jamming to tunes). They're not my "all time" favorite band these days, in fact I've come to not have an all-out favorite, but for that time, absolutely they were. I've seen them twice on tour in the early 2000's. and they still put on a great show.
For me it was Van Halen.....but Def Leppard was in the top 5. Pyromania and Hysteria were epitomes of 80's hard rock. IMHO hey started to peter out after that though (along with changing of musical tastes occurring at that time).
If you want to get someone in to Def Leppard, you start them off with this song “Photograph.” It’s one of the greatest sounding rocks songs ever. It’s ear rock candy at it’s finest, then again Def Leppard is the epitome of ear rock candy.
Love, love, love this song! I have seen Def Leopard in concert and it was one of the best!! This was sometime in the early 2000's, not sure if they are still touring now.
Man….Joe Elliott had some pipes! The first few Leppard albums were incredible. Hysteria went in a whole different direction. Pyromania was their last REAL rocking release.
I discovered Def Leppard when I was 12 and sneaked into my uncle's room and started going thru his album collection. He came home and caught me but instead of getting mad he sat down on the floor w/ me and introduced me to more of his collection and that was when I also discovered Styx, ACDC and so much more. But Def Leppard was and always has been my favorite band.
"Too Late For Love" from the Live Show called 'In The Round In Your Face'. You will see how the band members can harmonize vocally and musically. And yes, you can see a one-armed Rick Allen tearing it up!
One of the few songs where the verses are heavy and the chorus is slow and melodic. Definitely a unique approach and a great way to showcase Joe Elliot’s voice.
I still have a hard time watching any music video where the Def Leppard drummer still has both arms. It must have been amazing to not only continue being a drummer, but also inventing a drum kit specifically made for only one arm, the rest of the drums were done with foot pedals. Truly a masterpiece of engineering. I don't know if he still uses the original version of that set or if he has more.
you are so correct best band ever the sad part is all these bands like DL Rush Journey Van halen can never be replaced so glad i was around to grow up with these and so many more to name music bands that were an era of music legends and i sure miss them.
IMHO, this is the GOAT of Def Leppard catalog. This album and this song in particular are hard to beat. That said, Hysteria surpassed it in many ways. Still, this will probably always be my favorite album and song by them. Brilliant from start to finish.
I am a lifelong Leppard fan since the age of 8 in 1983. They have always been a source of inspiration. I love your comments about the British flag as I remember everyone wearing British flag clothes at this time. I still have my British flag painter's hat from then. Many people have mentioned some of their best hits below from back in the day but as a fan, there is not a bad song in their collection. Check out songs like Rock Brigade, Gods of War, Demolition Man, Ride Into The Sun and the album Yeah! where they cover songs of bands they idolized as kids. They are touring this summer with Joan Jett, Poison and Motley Crue, all bands that you need to check out.
I'm so glad to see 2 young people understand and love them as much as I do.. this reaction is older, so idk if you will see this....80s was the best and their music and a whole lot of the music of that time, has stood the test of time..DL just wrapped up a stadium tour at the end of 2022.. Hopefully they will tour soon in your city or close by and you can go see them...even though they're in their 60s, except for Rick, he's 59, their shows are phenomenal. I decided several years ago to pick band and thoroughly study, read watch interviews, and study each member also individually.. Def Leppard was first on the list.. I went all the way back to the very beginning when Joe had brown curly hair LOL... You probably already have but if you go back and read and study every single thing about every single one of them each one individually has an amazing story in our phenomenal.. the one guitarist in the older videos that I don't mention is Steve Clark he died in January of 1991 and they replaced him with a guy named Vivian Campbell.. so he's in the newer stuff well from 91 on....they have been friends and bandmates for so many decades, that says a lot about a group of people, even married people most time don't stay together as long as they have.. I'm so glad that I found your videos I don't even care to watch anybody else's reviews anymore, I've become a huge fan of you 2
You should do a video on Tesla "Song And Emotion". It was written for Def Leppard's former guitarist Steve Clark. He was known to not handle the stardom that came with being in the band and dealt with it by becoming an alcoholic. He eventually drank himself to death in 1991. Tesla's song and emotion is an awesome tribute to him.
A fun and excellent reaction to one of my favorite Def Leppard songs from 1983, and I think it's one of the greatest arrangements and musical compositions ever! They do still tour, most recently was their Residency in Las Vegas as far as I know, and they are slated to be on the upcoming Stadium Tour with Motley Crue, Poison, and Joan Jett (which has been postponed twice due to the Pandemic, unfortunately!!!)... Love you Guys!
Ahhh so many great Def Leppard songs to choose from. I have seen this band, more than any other band, live. They were known for the wall of speakers that would bust an eardrum😆 I have so many memories listening to these songs...I listened to Hysteria until I wore out my cassette deck. 🤣 Love the vids you two☺️
I was introduced to this band and this album in my high school days. They have been in the top 3 of my favorite bands list since. After 6 concerts they never disappoint. There are so many songs you still need to explore.
Rob is a crack up... Love you both!, My favorite reactors.. well the ones I watch the most,.. so likeable , and heartfelt .. and the way they get along .. that's a relationship 😊
So glad you found it, I knew you'd love it. The story goes it was in the middle of recording the album when Pete Willis was fired and Phil Collen was brought in. The first thing he was asked to do was come up with a solo for Photograph which he recorded off the top of his head.
You guys made the comment about seeing them live....... I have seen them more times in concert that all the other concerts I've been to combined. In the late 1980's early 1990's, Def Leppard's concerts were by far the best. Seeing videos like this and hearing it in person is totally different. I would LOVE to go back to those days...... I would go see them more!!!! I STILL have my Def Leppard tee's after all these years.
They had been played on album oriented rock stations before this, but this was their first real top 40 hit. The only thing that keep them at number 2 across the board for the whole year of 83, was Michael Jackson's Thriller at number 1
I remember when this song started playing on MTV. I was immediately a fan of Def Leppard, and went to my local mall and bought the _Pyromania_ cassette tape. I still remember the distinctive tan plastic PolyGram cassette case.
First time I saw DEF LEPPARD on the HYSTERIA tour,it was awesome. The stage was in the middle of the arena at Lakeland Civic Center In Lakeland Florida. Killer show, good musicianship! Killer stage show. I am guitar player, these guys won another big fan that day!
Oh my Gosh!! Hahaha!! "THE COW BELL"... My twin sister made me go with her to see them in concert and it was absolutely amazing... watching the drummer was just as fascinating as their music... 🎶💞🙏🏻🔥
I Love Def Leppard was and still is my Favorite Band such good memories from my teenage years.I remember when I first herd them my jaw dropped I was blown away and they will always be my number one. Thanks for that Great Song and Reaction.
One of my top 5 bands. Love me some Def Lep. Pyromania is a killer album. High and Dry is a killer album and Hysteria after Rick Allen lost his arm and learned to drum without it!, killer album.
I've seen this band in concert 4 times, they are amazing showmen and Joe Elliot is one of the best front men out there. As a drummer myself, Rick Allen is in my Top 5. Another you'd like is the late Jeff Porcaro from Toto. Check out the song Rosanna
My first concert when I was in junior high school. Going into 8th grade, saw Def Leppard and Heart was the opener. Been many concerts since but that one was the best!
I’ve seen Def Leppard back in the 80’s and they were awesome - then again last year, again awesome! They are SO GOOD live!!!!! Thanks for the review :)
Back in 1983 I was bought my first drum set a 5 piece set called Royce $500 and I was 11 years old and that summer I used my boom box and a cassette of pyromania and everyday I would turn up the volume to its max so I could hear while I played my drums and I did that 2 times a day everyday playing to that entire album until I learned how to play the drums and a GIANT thanks to Rick Allen and Def Leppard I learned how to play the drums that summer and when hysteria album came out I did the same thing I learned every song and their next album adrenalized I learned that one too ever song. Thank you Rick Allen and Def Leppard I taught myself to play the drums by playing along with Rick Allen and the rest is history. I was in 3 garage bands and on my 3rd band we made 4 original songs and they were video taped and we sent them to phonograms in New York and they replied saying keep practicing and send us more videos of your originals we sent them 2 more and they wrote back saying sorry you are not what we are looking for and that hurt cause many people from the gigs we did said that they liked our own songs but I guess we weren’t good enough and we sent the videos to 3 other record companies and we never heard back from them and years later after we called it quits Ron our singer heard a song from ac/dc and the song was called thunder struck and it sounded a lot like 1 of our songs but not exactly the same but close and we always wondered if our song was used like a template for that song and our own song was not called thunder struck and the words in that song were not all the same words but I’ll never know if a record company used 1 of our songs as a template for ac/dc and it didn’t sound the same we could hear the changes but it wasn’t enough for us to prove anything. Such is life.
If you want a super band, you need to do the Traveling Willbury's End of the Line or Handle with Care. Had Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne(ELO) and George Harrison (Beatles).
Great Band 👍. I’d love them to check out more classic Tom Petty too…maybe some live performances with Stevie Nicks…love their harmonies! Hard Promises, Apartment Song….
Roy Orbison never sang on the song End Of The Line as it was the bands tribute to him after he passed away, but the Traveling Wilburys are one of my favorite Super Bands. "Last Night and "If You Belonged To Me" are great songs too.
I absolutely love def Leppard. I saw them in concert in Gulfport Mississippi in 1993. They were so awesome. Joe Elliott did the splits and touched his toes in the air on the stage. Best ck cert I've ever been too. I love Elliot. When I was a teen in the 80s I was in love with him. Lol
Any vintage Def Leppard (80s) you have to give kudos to the guitarist before Viv Campbell, the late great Steve Clark! And yes they still tour! And this song IS about Marilyn! They wore Marilyn T-shirts after this song became a hit! 💙🎼✌️🎸💋
Just wanted to say that Rick always does a drum solo at their concerts. It will literally blow your damn mind! When Joe introduces Rick, the crowd goes completely insane! He gets a standing ovation every time! He's incredible!
This song was my first introduction to Def Leppard and I became an instant fan. RIP - Steve Clark - his guitar work was critical to this band's success. Yes they still tour but they were at their prime in the 1980s and 90s.
Def Leppard is my all time favorite band. Anytime you react to a Def Leppard video i'll always drop what i'm doing and watch. Joe Elliot has gone on the record many times saying Photograph was written for Maryland Monroe.
As fans of Rick Allen and of the bands vocals I think you'd really enjoy the studio album version of "Rocket.' Its 6 minutes long but so much better (imo) than the shorter single version.
